The realized dream of artists Sheryl Light and Thomas Slattery, Open Studio is most definitely out of the box.

California native Thomas Slattery spent more than a decade as a professional dancer, working in Paris and New York, before discovering yoga and settling on the East Coast.

As well as being a dancer and a yogi, Slattery is also a talented sculptor working with bronze, steel and

stone.

Merging their artistic visions and shared love of yoga, Slattery and Light co-create unique paintings, inspired by their focus on mind/body connection.

The innovative pair established their own art company 12 years ago called Cross Your Toes. It hosts their artwork and offers tailor-made paintings.

They meet with clients and collect stories from their lives, then work those details into the abstract painting. There may be an anniversary date hidden in the background or a favorite color dominating the image, the pair said.

Legendary coach speaks

Posted: at 11:20 pm

Wyat Taylor/The Daily EvergreenCoach Herman Boone delivers a speech to the students Wednesday in the CUB's senior ballroom.

Inspirational football coach Herman Boone shared life lessons he learned while coaching the famous 1971 Titans to a crowded CUB Senior Ballroom on Wednesday night.

Boone, whose life was portrayed by Denzel Washington in the movie Remember the Titans, spoke to the students not only about the game of football and the movie, but also everything he learned from the team.

These young boys called the Titans broke the mold in Virginia, Boone said. They took risks and showed the world that they were not afraid to take the plunge for what they believed in. By doing so they created trust among themselves, and that trust became respect, and that respect became the emotional glue that binds that football team together then, and today.

Boone made the audience laugh with his stories of the Titians, including some of the differences between real life and the movie. He told the crowd that he did not make the team run through the swamps of Gettysburg at 3 a.m. but in fact had them ride the bus there at 9 p.m.

Boone spoke on other subjects, such as his marriage, and touched some students in ways they did not expect.

People, I think, expected a lot about football, and about leadership and education, and just the typical things that you were taught in the movie, said Avery Hutcherson, a senior digital technology major who attended the lecture. But I think the thing that stood out to me the most was when he spoke about his wife. Marriage isnt a normal thing anymore. It's not a sacred pack between a man and a woman. The way that he spoke about his wife, saying that he was married to her for 49 years, and how he couldnt wait to wake up every morning just to make her laugh, was probably one of the sweetest things every woman and man needs to hear.

Another aspect of Boones lecture that left a mark with students was his approach on how to gain respect from others. Boone emphasized creating dialogue between different cultures and creating trust.

I think that is something that will stick with me throughout my time here at WSU and throughout my life, about opening up and creating that dialogue with someone that you dont know, or with someone that you dont like, and learning to gain that respect, said Christina Turner, a senior communication major.

Boone advised students to never back down in the face of adversity.

If Texas Bans Planned Parenthood, The Fallout May Be Huge

Posted: at 11:19 pm

They say things are bigger in Texas, and apparently its true. The state may suffer a whopping $6 million loss if Planned Parenthood clinics are no longer part of the Womens Health Program, and tens of thousands of women could be without care.

Thats the word from a George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services report that analyzed the fallout from a Republican-led plan to kick Planned Parenthood out of the states Womens Health Program. The program, a family planning and health system that started in 2005, is run under a waiver from Medicaid and serves about 100,000-plus low-income women.

In a broader perspective, its a little sad to me that not very long ago, there had been a political compromise about family planning a birth control services, with conservatives and liberals agreeing that it was a good thing to help women take control of their reproductive choices and also decrease the need for abortions, Leighton Lu, director of the schools Center for Health Policy Research told TakePart.

MORE: Memphis: Women Lose Access to Medical Services After Planned Parenthood is Defunded

Within the year that social contract has appeared to unravel, and there have been stronger attacks on family planning and birth control. I thought this was something everyone could agree on.

The Womens Health Program offers birth control and basic screenings for illnesses such as diabetes and cancer. It has always excluded institutions that offer abortions, and the Planned Parenthood clinics that were part of the program didnt provide them, so they were allowed in.

But according to the Austin American-Statesman, in February of this year state officials made a new rule saying that healthcare providers that were even associated with organizations that provided or promoted abortions were to be excluded.

Medicare and Medicaid decided this wasnt in line with existing laws that allowed women to choose their own healthcare providers, so they yanked the funding, which constituted 90 percent of the budget for the Womens Health Program with them.

The state said it would continue backing the program with state money. However, two lawsuits ensued: Texas is suing the federal government, and a number of Planned Parenthood affiliates are suing the state of Texas.

Gainesville Health & Fitness founder Cirulli honored in Las Vegas

Posted: at 11:19 pm

Published: Friday, October 12, 2012 at 2:20 p.m. Last Modified: Friday, October 12, 2012 at 2:20 p.m.

Joe Cirulli, founder and CEO of Gainesville Health & Fitness Center, received a lifetime achievement award Thursday from Club Industry magazine during the Club Industry Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas.

In announcing the award, Club Industry noted that Cirulli opened his first club with three employees in a 1,500-square-foot space above a bank and today has three locations with 400 employees and 28,000 members.

Joe Cirulli is one of the biggest success stories in our industry, Pamela Kufahl, editor-in-chief, said in a news release. And despite becoming successful in this industry, he continues to hold true to his mission of helping to make his community of Gainesville one of the healthiest cities in America. He has not felt the need to franchise his concept and expand beyond his community, but he welcomes club operators from other communities into his club to share his expertise with them. That desire to serve his community and to serve the fitness industry makes him the perfect choice for our award this year.

The Wellness Councils of America gave Gainesville a Gold Well City USA Award in 2003 after GHFC teamed with Shands and the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce to recruit businesses to participate in health and wellness efforts.

Cirulli is the 10th recipient of the award, joining such past winners as television fitness guru Jack LaLanne, Golds Gym and World Gym founder Joe Gold and Jazzercise founder Judi Sheppard Missett.

Six Ways to Bear-Proof Your Retirement

Posted: at 11:19 pm

Following the news that bull markets make people more likely to retire -- and that doing so can put their future finances in danger -- it's important for savers to review how market returns can affect their retirement planning.

On one hand, it's understandable why more retire during strong market conditions: People have a retirement savings target in mind, and bull markets can help more people reach those targets. The problem is, given the normal cycles of market returns, retiring at a peak could leave you vulnerable to the next bear market.

Ideally, you shouldn't let recent returns influence your retirement planning too much. Keep these six things in mind when a run of good returns has you thinking you should retire a little early.

1. Don't skimp on contributions if you get ahead of target

When market returns are strong, people tend to feel they can skip contributing to their retirement plans, because those returns seem to be adding to the portfolio fast enough. Market returns need to be viewed as cyclical, so good returns one year may have to make up for disappointing returns the next. Meanwhile, savings rates should be based on your long-term needs, not the current value of your portfolio.

2. Remember that an early retirement requires more funding

If you hit your retirement savings target a little early, you might need a higher target to account for the fact that if you retire early, you'll have to live off those savings for a longer time.

3. Be sure to account for low interest rates

One of the biggest changes in retirement assumptions in recent years is the fact that interest rates, from bank rates to bond yields, are nowhere near their historical norms. That means it takes a bigger portfolio to produce an adequate amount of retirement income.

4. Don't retire as soon as your portfolio reaches your target
