Yoga expert on bike to attempt Guinness
Posted: November 28, 2012 at 6:43 am
Jorhat, Nov. 27: S.S. Siddhartha's daily regimen comprises twisting and contorting his body into various shapes, with hands free on a moving motorcycle.
He is pushing himself to new heights with an eye on breaking the Guinness world record for the number of yogasanas performed on a motorbike held by Yuvraj C.P, yoga master in Hong Kong.
For Siddhartha, from the Rongdoi area of Jorhat, Abhijeet Baruah, who recently created a record by running barefoot for over 150km in 24 hours, is the inspiration.
The 41-year-old black belt third dan in kung fu, said he practised pranayam and yoga along with the martial art as all these helped to keep him supple. "I often tried out yogasana poses while moving on my TVS motorcycle till someone suggested that I try for a record in the Guinness Book of Records," Siddhartha said.
After a search on the Internet he found out that such a record is held by Yuvraj C.P, a resident of Chennai who works as a yoga teacher in Hong Kong. He had performed 23 yogasanas in Mumbai on February 17, 2011.
Siddhartha, a kung fu coach and national referee, is also a member of the All Jorhat Manchuria Kung Fu Academy affiliated to the Manchuria Kung Fu International School of Chinese Self Defence Martial Arts headquartered in Hong Kong. The national headquarters of the academy is in Chennai.
The kung fu expert said he would try to cross 30 yogasana poses and practises all of them daily. "Among padmasana, bajrasana, naukasana and sirsasana, the last is the toughest to perform as keeping one's balance on a handless motorcycle and then overturning oneself is difficult," he said.
Siddhartha, who practises on a TVS motorcycle, wishes that he had a heavier bike. "I weigh 72kg and the TVS is very light for me, only 110kg when the petrol tank is full and there is an imbalance. What I need is a bike of 200 to 250kg for more balance."
Siddhartha, who looks much younger than his age, will first perform all the poses and make a videography and send this to the Guinness World Record authorities. He plans to do this in December.
The All Jorhat Manchuria Kung Fu Academy and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad which is backing him in his endeavour have contacted B.K. Chandra Shekhar Tiwari, the Guinness representative in New Delhi.

Yoga Shown Effective for Treating Chronic Neck Pain
Posted: at 6:43 am
Newswise GLENVIEW, Ill., Nov. 27, 2012 -- According to published estimates, some 20 percent of the population suffers from chronic neck pain caused by a variety of structural dysfunctions in the neck, resulting in impaired quality of life and lost work time. A German study published in The Journal of Pain showed that yoga appears to be an effective treatment for neck pain and provides added benefits of improved psychological well being and quality of life. The Journal of Pain is the per-review publication of the American Pain Society, http://www.ampainsoc.org.
The mainstay of conservative treatment for neck pain is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, and the evidence of its effectiveness is contradictory while side effects, such as nausea and dizziness, are well known. The authors noted that one type of yoga, called lyengar yoga, has been shown effective in other pain syndromes, including low back pain. This activity uses supportive props and the sequences of postures can be tailored to address an individuals medical problem. No randomized controlled clinical trials have been published to assess the efficacy of lyengar yoga for adults with chronic neck pain.
Researchers at Charit-University Medical Center in Berlin and other sites in Germany and Austria studied 77 volunteer patients. Thirty-eight were assigned to the yoga group and 39 to a group treated with exercise. Unfortunately, the dropout rate was higher than anticipated as 24 subjects withdrew or were lost to follow-up. This reduced the study sample to 25 patients in the yoga group and 28 in self-care exercise. They were asked to complete a standardized questionnaire at the outset of the study, after four weeks, and after ten weeks.
The findings showed there was a significant and clinically important reduction in pain intensity in the yoga group. The authors reasoned that yoga might enhance both the toning of muscles and releasing of muscle tension. Relaxation responses, therefore, could reduce stress related muscle tension and modify neurobiological pain perception. They concluded, based on the study data, that lyengar yoga can be a safe and effective treatment option for chronic neck pain. The study results are consistent with the demonstrated benefits of yoga for treating low back pain.
About the American Pain Society Based in Glenview, Ill., the American Pain Society (APS) is a multidisciplinary community that brings together a diverse group of scientists, clinicians and other professionals to increase the knowledge of pain and transform public policy and clinical practice to reduce pain-related suffering. APS was founded in 1978 with 510 charter members. From the outset, the group was conceived as a multidisciplinary organization. The Board of Directors includes physicians, nurses, psychologists, basic scientists, pharmacists, policy analysts and others. For more information on APS, visit http://www.ampainsoc.org.

November 27, 2012 in City, Health Class says regimen restored long-lost strength, flexibility
Bill Bayne, right, and Jim Millgard, center, practice yoga on Tuesday at Yoga Shala studio on the South Hill inSpokane. (Full-size photo)
It took just one collective inhale from the group of middle-aged men for Katie Scanlon to realize she wasnt going to be able to stick to her originalplan.
The yoga veteran was out of her element and so were the men on the mats in front ofher.
They moaned and groaned with every movement. They lost their balance just moving one foot forward orbackward.
They asked me to teach them yoga because they were feeling like they were getting stiff, Scanlon said. That might be anunderstatement.
Three years ago, the group of about eight men in their 50s and 60s approached Scanlon at her Yoga Shala studio on the South Hill and asked her to teach them yoga to help them work on their strength and flexibility. She agreed, on the condition that they would come once a week for a wholeyear.
I knew that if we only did it for six weeks, they wouldnt really notice a benefit from it and then they would walk away from it thinking, Oh, I tried yoga and it really wasnt that great, Scanlonsaid.
They agreed to her terms, and three years later are still coming to class once a week. Theyve also expanded the group to include wives, girlfriends and others their own age looking for an alternative to yoga classes geared toward youngeryogis.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 Review: Great
Posted: at 6:43 am
Jared Newman / TIME.com
For laptop makers, now is a time of experimentation. After years in pursuit of the same old goals thinner, lighter, faster, cheaper Windows 8 has provided a novel challenge: Create laptops that can transform into tablets, or vice versa.
Lenovos IdeaPad Yoga 13, which starts at $1,000, is just one attempt to take advantage of Microsofts dual-sided operating system. Out of the box, it looks like a traditional notebook, but keep tilting the 13-inch touchscreen back along its hinge, and it folds all the way around until the clamshell is closed again. Only now, the screen is face-up, and the keyboard hangs from the underbelly. You can also open the Yoga partway, keys down, so the screen is facing outward, or stand the device on both of its edges in a tent-like configuration.
This approach is simple and logical enough, but after spending a week with a Lenovo Yoga review unit, I think its a better laptop than it is a tablet.
The Yoga is clad in plastic, but its a soft-touch material that doesnt feel like the cheap shells of budget laptops, and the area where you rest your palms almost has a leathery feel.Among Windows laptops, its the rare high-end design that doesnt feel ripped off from Apples MacBooks, yet its keyboard and trackpad are just as good.
Jared Newman / TIME.com
The trackpad is generously sized and covered in glass, so your fingers glide over it smoothly, and the entire surface clicks with ease. It also supports multi-touch gestures, such as two-finger scrolling, pinch-to-zoom and the ability to simulate right-clicks by depressing the pane with both fingers. The Yogas keyboard is also a pleasure to type on, with island-style keys that let out a satisfying clack. One particularly nice touch is the rounded edge on the bottom of each key, which seems to leave just a bit more room for your fingers to land.
The display isnt too chintzy, either, though it does beg for the occasional swipe of a cloth as fingerprints build up. Although some users may pine for a higher resolution than 1600-by-900, this pixel density strikes a happy compromise, where text is fairly crisp but the desktop elements remain large enough to tap on, should the modern interface of Windows 8 fail to suit your needs.
As for performance, the Yogas Intel Core i5 processor provides more than enough power for ordinary tasks such as word processing, web browsing and streaming video. It can even handle some newer PC games; I loaded Guild Wars 2 on it, and had no trouble adventuring through its massive world.

Caterina Bortolussi and Francesca Rosset Talks More About Kinabuti
Caterina Bortolussi and Francesca Rosset talks more about Kinabuti with Thecla Wilke on Saturday Nite. Fashion, entertainment, and business icons converged in Lagos on Saturday, 3rd December at the GREY GOOSE KINABUTI GARDEN PARTY, to mark the first anniversary of KINABUTI -- the ethical fashion label that has been garnering frenzied media attention recently for its fashion social responsibility efforts in the ghettoes of Nigeria -- discovering talented young models, designers, and tailors from the ghettoes of the Niger Delta, and giving them the opportunity to live a better and glamorous life through life-coaching, skills acquisition and development initiatives -- and afterwards exposing their skills to an international audience with the help of "Kinabuti #39;s Godfather". Led by Caterina Bortolussi, an Italian designer, Kinabuti collaborated with Grey Goose a year ago, to pioneer this initiative which kicked off with the launch of KINABUTI #39;s first collection. And since then, Kinabuti has discovered and trained many young Nigerian girls, including four super models who now work with established international designers. Tonye Cole (co-founder, Sahara Group; brainchild of The Nehemiah Project) who was one of the special guests at the party, praised Grey Goose for supporting KINABUTI #39;s drive, saying "when you undertake a social project like this, which is reaching out to touch lives -- what you need is to be supported by a global brand like Grey Goose -- a brand that can take ...From:NTA2LagosViews:1 0ratingsTime:23:59More inEntertainment
