Imagine that you're exercising. You're working up a sweat, you're breathing hard, your heart is thumping, blood is coursing through your vessels to deliver oxygen to the muscles to keep you moving, and you sustain the activity for more than just a few minutes. That's aerobic exercise (also known as "cardio" in gym lingo); any activity that you can sustain for more than just a few minutes while your heart, lungs, and muscles work overtime. In this article, I'll discuss the mechanisms of aerobic exercise: oxygen transport and consumption, the role of the heart and the muscles, the proven benefits of aerobic exercise, how much you need to do to reap the benefits, and more.
The beginning
It all starts with breathing. The average healthy adult inhales and exhales about 7 to 8 liters of air per minute. Once you fill your lungs, the oxygen in the air (air contains approximately 20% oxygen) is filtered through small branches of tubes (called bronchioles) until it reaches the alveoli. The alveoli are microscopic sacs where oxygen diffuses (enters) into the blood. From there, it's a beeline direct to the heart.
Getting to the heart of it
The heart has four chambers that fill with blood and pump blood (two atria and two ventricles) and some very active coronary arteries. Because of all this action, the heart needs a fresh supply of oxygen, and as you just learned, the lungs provide it. Once the heart uses what it needs, it pumps the blood, the oxygen, and other nutrients out through the large left ventricle and through the circulatory system to all the organs, muscles, and tissues that need it.
A whole lot of pumping going on
Your heart beats approximately 60-80 times per minute at rest, 100,000 times a day, more than 30 million times per year, and about 2.5 billion times in a 70-year lifetime! Every beat of your heart sends a volume of blood (called stroke volume -- more about that later), along with oxygen and many other life-sustaining nutrients, circulating through your body. The average healthy adult heart pumps about 5 liters of blood per minute.
Oxygen consumption and muscles
All that oxygen being pumped by the blood is important. You may be familiar with the term "oxygen consumption." In science, it's labeled VO2, or volume of oxygen consumed. It's the amount of oxygen the muscles extract, or consume from the blood, and it's expressed as ml/kg/minute (milliliters per kilogram of body weight). Muscles are like engines that run on fuel (just like an automobile that runs on fuel); only our muscles use fat and carbohydrates instead of gasoline. Oxygen is a key player because, once inside the muscle, it's used to burn fat and carbohydrate for fuel to keep our engines running. The more efficient our muscles are at consuming oxygen, the more fuel we can burn, the more fit we are, and the longer we can exercise.

With an increasingly large segment of the American population becoming overweight, it is becoming more and more important for Americans to learn about effective ways to exercise and remain fit. While other changes need to be made to an individuals lifestyle in order for them to become fully fit and healthy, a good exercise regimen is a great starting point for returning to healthy ways. One of the best exercise regimens any individual can undertake to reverse the course of their health is aerobics.
The history of aerobics stretches back to the 1960s. A duo of professionals in the United States Air Force first began the study of aerobic exercise, creating the term aerobic and the exercise regimen itself. Dr. Kenneth Cooper and Colonel Pauline Potts were responsible for the birth of aerobics after Cooper was puzzled at the lack of ability among muscular individuals to perform at high intensities over long periods of time.
Cooper began testing the oxygen intake abilities of individuals using a bicycle ergometer. Individuals were tested based upon the ability of their body to use oxygen. Coopers results were published in 1968 in his book entitled Aerobics. Included in Coopers book were recommendations for exercise regimens involving swimming, jogging, running, and bicycling.
Many people assume that a fitness regimen designed to build muscle and improve performance is good enough to improve their all-around health. However, muscle building exercises are different from aerobic exercises. Muscle building exercise is considered anaerobic exercise as opposed to aerobic exercise. The difference between the two is as follows:
While anaerobic exercise is designed to build muscle and prepare the body for short, intense bursts; aerobic exercise is designed to prepare the body to perform physical activities over much longer periods of time. There are many forms of exercise that fall into the category of aerobic exercise. The following are just a few examples of aerobic exercises that are commonplace in America:

Any individual is capable of performing any of the aerobics routines listed above. There is no limiting factor in performing these exercises other than an individuals level of fitness. Even then, one of the things that make aerobics a great exercise option is the fact that it can be tailored to suit any individual. Those who lack the muscle strength and endurance to run for long distances can instead jog, putting less stress on their respiratory system and muscles. If a step aerobics class or Stairmaster is too high impact for older individuals, they can instead participate in a water aerobics class. These classes are in fact ideal for senior citizens because water supports the weight of the human body, removing stress on the joints and increasing range of motion.
Regardless of the type of aerobics an individual chooses to get involved with, the benefits remain the same. Aerobic exercise doesnt just help people increase their ability to perform physical activities over long periods, it helps them achieve a healthier lifestyle overall. Aerobics is a form of physical exercise that combines rhythmic aerobic exercise with stretching and strength training routines with the goal of improving all elements of fitness (flexibility, muscular strength, and cardio-vascular fitness). It is usually performed to music and may be practiced in a group setting led by an instructor (fitness professional), although it can be done solo and without musical accompaniment. With the goal of preventing illness and promoting physical fitness, practitioners perform various routines comprising a number of different dance-like exercises. Formal aerobics classes are divided into different levels of intensity and complexity. Aerobics classes may allow participants to select their level of participation according to their fitness level. Many gyms offer a variety of aerobic classes. Each class is designed for a certain level of experience and taught by a certified instructor with a specialty area related to their particular class.
Both the term and the specific exercise method were developed by Dr. Kenneth Cooper, M.D., an exercise physiologist, and Col. Pauline Potts, a physical therapist, both of the United States Air Force. Dr. Cooper, an avowed exercise enthusiast, was personally and professionally puzzled about why some people with excellent muscular strength were still prone to poor performance at tasks such as long-distance running, swimming, and bicycling. He began measuring systematic human performance using a bicycle ergometer, and began measuring sustained performance in terms of a person's ability to use oxygen. His groundbreaking book, Aerobics, was published in 1968, and included scientific exercise programs using running, walking, swimming and bicycling. The book came at a fortuitous historical moment, when increasing weakness and inactivity in the general population was causing a perceived need for increased exercise.
Aerobic gymnastics, also known as sport aerobics and competitive aerobics, is a type of competitive aerobics involving complicated choreography, rhythmic and acrobatic gymnastics with elements of aerobics.[1] Performance is divided into categories by age, sex and groups (individual, mixed pairs and trios) and are judged on the following elements: dynamic and static strength, jumps and leaps, kicks, balance and flexibility. Ten exercises are mandatory: four consecutive high leg kicks, patterns. A maximum of ten elements from following families are allowed: push-ups, supports and balances, kicks and splits, jumps and leaps. Elements of tumbling such as handsprings, handstands, back flips, and aerial somersaults are prohibited. Scoring is by judging of artistic quality, creativity, execution, and difficulty of routines. Sport aerobics has state, national, and international competitions, but is not an Olympic sport.
