Southeast Asian Stocks: Thai, M'sia, S'pore upp; Philippines outperforms

BANGKOK: Major Southeast Asian stocks rose on Tuesday after active buying in a reporting season and ahead of the Congressional testimony by the new head of the U.S. Federal Reserve, with Thai benchmark capped below a key 1,300 mark amid growing domestic risks. Bangkok's SET index closed up 0.4 percent after a rangebound session that saw the gauge moving in 1,288-1,299 range. Commodities stocks such as PTT Global Chemical Pcl outperformed as a global recovery bolstered earnings outlook. Traders said players were wary of the political deadlock, with the inconclusive Feb. 2 poll and rice farmer protests raising risks going forward. Thai exchange noted a fall in volumes to 83 percent of a full-day average over past 30 days. A member of Thailand's Election Commission said it may prove impossible to complete this month's disrupted election and the whole vote may need to be re-run, implying many months more under a caretaker government with limited powers. Across the exchanges, investors piled into shares of Southeast Asian firms following their strong earnings, including Indonesia's Bank Mandiri Tbk and Singapore Airlines Ltd both up more than 2 percent. HSBC Global Research reiterated an 'overweight' rating on Singapore Airlines, citing the stock's compelling valuation, with a target price of S$12.5 compared to the closing price of S$9.75. Philippine shares outperformed in the region, with the main index up 1 percent at the highest in more than two weeks, with foreign investors buying shares a net 560.6 million peso ($12.46 million). MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 1.2 percent. Fed Chair Janet Yellen is likely to face questions on the state of the labour market and the future pace of tapering when she appears before the House Financial Services Committee on Tuesday.

This business-oriented Ultrabook hybrid is a successful marriage of Yoga design and ThinkPad durability, features, and docking options.
The Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga isnt as slim or sexy as its colorful consumer-oriented sibling, the IdeaPad Yoga 2 Pro, nor does it have the Yoga 2 Pro's alluring 3820-by-1200-pixel display. But this hybrid Ultrabook checks all the must-have business feature boxes, as befits its place in the ThinkPad lineup. And it does so in typical Yoga style.
So what does the ThinkPad Yoga have that the "darn close to perfect" Yoga 2 Pro doesn't? Both models have touchscreens with 360-degree hinges, so they can be used in tablet, laptop, stand, and "tent" modes. ThinkPad Yoga adds business-oriented goodies such as a matte Gorilla Glass display, a tough magnesium-alloy case, a port for a desktop docking station, and that classic TrackPoint button in the center of its keyboard.
Lenovo's ThinkPad Yoga has that famous hinge that allows it to be used in notebook, stand, tent, or tablet mode.
The ThinkPad Pro also has an innovative "Lift 'n Lock" feature that raises the frame surrounding its backlit keyboard so that its flush with the keys when the laptop is in tent or tablet mode. This helps prevent damage from dirt and spills. Contrast that with the Yoga 2 Pro, which simply turns it keyboard off when its flipped around.
The Yoga comes in a pedestrian gray case with rounded corners, unlike the sleek tapered design of the Yoga 2 Pro. It's not ugly, but where is it written that business laptops can't have sexy looks or come in a color scheme other than gray or black?
The main attraction of the Yoga line is the backflip hinge, which lives up to its promise. I flew cross-country twice during this review, and the "stand" mode, where the screen is upright with the keyboard flat on the table behind it, proved to be perfect for such cramped quarters. Its much more stable in bumpy airspace than tent mode. I could watch videos or use the touchscreen to surf.
But the ThinkPad Yoga is too heftyit weighs 3.52 poundsfor extended hand-held tablet use. Stand mode, on the other hand, works fine even in your lap. The Yoga's hinges are great, not too stiff, and they hold the screen securely at any angle in both tent and stand positions.
Despite its clever lift-up keyboard, I just couldn't bring myself to place the machine in stand or tablet modes on the kitchen table or anywhere liquid or crumbs might get into the downward-facing keyboard. Twist-around displays, including Lenovo's own ThinkPad Twist, allow pretty much the same usage modes without the keyboard ever facing down. Sony'sVAIO Flip and Dell's XPS 12 Convertible avoid this problem, too. On the other hand, these designs are not as rugged as the hinges on Lenovos Yoga laptops.

Yoga Pants Ban in Massachusetts High School

Recently, a ban on yoga pants and leggings has been placed on students at a high school in Rockport, MA. This new rule has resulted in students and parents saying the policy goes too far.
Rockports High School dress code states that students are prohibited from wearing the pants while students say the policy hasnt been unforced until recently.
The newly reinforced rule sprouted from expressed concerns from faculty members. They were bothered that the students werent complying with the dress code policy in the student handbook.
The schools principal recently held an assembly to remind the high school students about the new rule.
20 female students didnt seem to agree with the newly enforced rules. Instead, the girls sported the body-hugging pants. The protesting girls were immediately told to go home to change their clothes. They also received write ups, warning them never to return with the yoga pants or leggings again.
Senior Aidan Wright was among the students written up for wearing the banned yoga pants.
I just dont think anyone would have looked at my outfit and felt like I was dressing in a way that was inappropriate for school, Wright said.
The news of the ban has gone viral, making Twitter users speak out.
Superintendent Rob Liebow supports the principal in his decision to address the situation. The policy is firmly in place for students to adhere to, he said.
