Yoga program to expand beyond Encinitas

Posted: April 22, 2014 at 3:48 pm

In this photo from 2012, fifth grade students finish a yoga class by quietly lying on their mats at Flora Vista Elementary School in Encinitas.

ENCINITAS The foundation that brought yoga to Encinitas elementary schools will hold an open house to announce plans to expand the program nationally Wednesday night.

Officials from the Sonima Foundation formerly the Jois Foundation are scheduled to speak about how yoga, already part of the health and wellness programs in Encinitas elementary schools, will be expanded to other districts.

The foundation gave more than $500,000 to the Encinitas Union School District to create a yoga program in 2012. Last summer, the foundation gave the district another $1.4 million grant to expand the program.

Some parents in the district sued the district because they saw the program as religious, but a judge ruled that the program could stay in the schools last year.

That ruling has been appealed, but no trial date has been set yet.

The open house will include yoga demonstrations from children.

Former state Secretary of Education Scott Himelstein and Sonima Foundation CEO Gene Ruffin are among the people expected to be at the workshop, scheduled for 5:30 7:30 p.m. at Jois Yoga, 575 S. Coast Highway 101, Encinitas.

The open house will include a presentation of the new line of Sonima yoga clothes, music, raffles, hors doeuvres and refreshments.

The Yoga Retreat has some new activities added to this year's camp like nature studies, hikes, painting, sketching, and even a drama production with music and costume preparation. Karma Yoga will be introduced to the campers, including chores around the farm, the garden and the farm animals.

They also offer a position for Junior Counselors, for campers who have been in our camp before, outgrew camp age and want to come back.
