Distance Learning : Texas State University

Posted: March 24, 2016 at 8:45 pm

The Office of Distance and Extended Learning, in addition to administering the self-pacedcorrespondence, extension, and continuing education programs, provides information on Texas State's distance learning programs, courses, initiatives, and resources.

Distance education is a formal educational process in which the majority of instruction (interaction between students and instructors and among students) in a course occurs when students and instructors are not in the same place. At Texas State, most distance education courses are offered via TRACS, an Internet-based learning management system for delivering course materials, facilitating class discussions, implementing assignments and quizzes, and supporting learning outcomes. Courses typically fit into one of two categories:

Fully online course - A course which may have mandatory face-to-face sessions totaling no more than 15 percent of the planned instructional time. Examples of face-to-face sessions include orientation, laboratory, exam review, or an in-person test.

Hybrid course - A course in which a majority (more than 50 percent but less than 85 percent) of the planned instructional time occurs when the students and instructor are not in the same place. Mandatory face-to-face sessions may total up to 49 percent of planned instructional time.

Many states have prescribed an authorization process for institutions from other states that deliver online courses to their state residents. Therefore, before accepting enrollments for online and correspondence self-pacedcourses from students residing outside of Texas and not planning on relocating to Texas, Texas State must be in compliance with the distance learning regulations of the states in which students reside.

For more information on state authorization and for a list of states in which Texas State is in compliance with state authorization rules, visit the State Authorization page.

Texas State School of Social Work's online MSW (Master of Social Work) program was ranked 11th among Top Colleges for Online Social Work Programs by BestColleges.com. These rankings are based on several factors, including school and program reputation, student satisfaction, peer and instructional quality, and overall affordability.

See the Schedule of Classes for a list of courses offered online or in a hybrid format through TRACS, on evenings and weekends, and at the Round Rock Campus. Listings are divided accordingly on the Schedule of Classes main page.

Texas Virtual School Network – Texas Education Agency

Posted: at 8:45 pm

The Texas Virtual School Network (TxVSN) provides Texas students and schools with equitable access to quality online courses and instructors. It is a valuable resource for interactive, collaborative, instructor-led online courses taught by state-certified and appropriately credentialed teachers trained in effective online instruction.

TEA under the leadership of the commissioner of education, administers the TxVSN, sets standards for and approves TxVSN courses and professional development for online teachers, and has fiscal responsibility for the network. Education Service Center (ESC) Region 10 oversees the day-to-day operations of the TxVSN network. The TxVSN is made up of two componentsthe TxVSN statewide catalog of supplemental high school courses and the full-time TxVSN online schools program.

The TxVSN statewide course catalog provides supplemental online courses for high school graduation to public school age students. The catalog offers students across the state opportunities to enroll in high school, Advanced Placement, and dual-credit courses offered through the network by approved providers. The TxVSN catalog works in partnership with public schools to meet the needs of students. To view available courses, visit the TxVSNonline course catalog. To learn more, visit the TxVSN website.

The TxVSN Online Schools (OLS) program offers free,full-time virtual instructionto eligible Texas public school students in grades 3-12 who enroll in one of the six TEA-accredited public schools approved to participate in the program. Instruction provided through the TxVSN OLS is 100 percent virtual. Students in the program are not required to be physically present on campus during instruction.

All courses offered through the TxVSN must meet the state curriculum requirements, known as the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills or TEKS, and the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL)National Standards of Quality for Online Courses (outside source).Courses are also reviewed for alignment withaccessibility standards(PDF, 232.02 KB). TxVSN courses are taught by teachers who are Texas-certified in the content area and grade level of the course or meet the credentialing requirements of the associated institution of higher education. They are also trained in best practices for delivering online instruction. Students do not need to be physically present at school during instruction of TxVSN courses.

Yoga: Click Here for Poses, Benefits and History

Yoga Yoga Overview

Yoga is a systematic practice of physical exercise, breath control, relaxation, diet control, and positive thinking and meditation aimed at developing harmony in the body, mind, and environment. The practice entails low-impact physical activity, postures (called asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), relaxation, and meditation. Most people are familiar with the physical poses or yoga positions but don't know that yoga involves so much more.

In the health fields, yoga techniques are being applied in health promotion programs, substance abuse treatment programs, and as complementary treatment for diseases such as anxiety disorders, depression, coronary heart disease, cancers, and HIV/AIDS. Yoga is a low-cost self-help approach to well-being.

The origin is a Sanskrit word Yog meaning union. Yoga is a union of the organ systems in the body with the consciousness in the mind. Philosophically, yoga produces a union of body, mind, and energy (or soul or spirit) to bring about a state of equanimity (calmness). Progressing to an even more advanced state, blending science and philosophy, one experiences a union of body, mind, internal energy, and the all-pervading cosmic energy, resulting in better physical health, mental control, and, ultimately, self-realization.

General Yoga Information

Posted: at 4:49 am

No one knows exactly when Yoga began, but it certainly predates written history. Stone carvings depicting figures in Yoga positions have been found in archeological sites in the Indus Valley dating back 5,000 years or more. There is a common misconception that Yoga is rooted in Hinduism; on the contrary, Hinduisms religious structures evolved much later and incorporated some of the practices of Yoga. (Other religions throughout the world have also incorporated practices and ideas related to Yoga.)

The tradition of Yoga has always been passed on individually from teacher to student through oral teaching and practical demonstration. The formal techniques that are now known as Yoga are, therefore, based on the collective experiences of many individuals over many thousands of years. The particular manner in which the techniques are taught and practiced today depends on the approach passed down in the line of teachers supporting the individual practitioner.

One of the earliest texts having to do with Yoga was compiled by a scholar named Patanjali, who set down the most prevalent Yoga theories and practices of his time in a book he called Yoga Sutras (Yoga Aphorisms) as early as the 1st or 2nd century B.C. or as late as the 5th century A.D. (exact dates are unknown). The system that he wrote about is known as Ashtanga Yoga, or the eight limbs of Yoga, and this is what is generally referred to today as Classical Yoga. Most current adherents practice some variation of Patanjalis system.

The eight steps of Classical Yoga are 1) yama, meaning restraint refraining from violence, lying, stealing, casual sex, and hoarding; 2) niyama, meaning observance purity, contentment, tolerance, study, and remembrance; 3) asana, physical exercises; 4) pranayama, breathing techniques; 5) pratyahara, preparation for meditation, described as withdrawal of the mind from the senses; 6) dharana, concentration, being able to hold the mind on one object for a specified time; 7) dhyana, meditation, the ability to focus on one thing (or nothing) indefinitely; 8) samadhi, absorption, or realization of the essential nature of the self. Modern Western Yoga classes generally focus on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th steps.

Yoga probably arrived in the United States in the late 1800s, but it did not become widely known until the 1960s, as part of the youth cultures growing interest in anything Eastern. As more became known about the beneficial effects of Yoga, it gained acceptance and respect as a valuable method for helping in the management of stress and improving health and well-being. Many physicians now recommend Yoga practice to patients at risk for heart disease, as well as those with back pain, arthritis, depression, and other chronic conditions.

ZEN BUDDHISM | What is Zen Buddhism?

Posted: at 4:48 am

Trying to explain or define Zen Buddhism, by reducing it to a book, to a few definitions, or to a website impossible. Instead, it freezes Zen in time and space, thereby weakening its meaning.

Defining Zen is like trying to describe the taste of honey to someone who has never tasted it before. You can try to explain the texture and scent of honey, or you can try to compare and correlate it with similar foods. However, honey is honey! As long as you have not tasted it, you are in the illusion of what honey is.

The same goes with Zen, because Zen Buddhism is a practice that needs to be experienced, not a concept that you can intellectualize or understand with your brain. The information that we'll give here won't cover all of what of Zen is, but is a starting point to the Zen experience.

Zen Buddhism a Japanese school of Mahayana Buddhism, but it is, first and foremost, a practice that was uninterruptedly transmitted from master to disciple, and that goes back to the Awakening of a man named Siddhrtha Gautama (Shakyamuni Gotama in Japanese) - The Buddha - 2500 years ago in India.

The practice of Zen meditation or Zazen (za meaning sitting, and Zen meaning meditation in Japanese), is the core of Zen Buddhism: without it, the is no Zen. Zen meditation, is a way of vigilance and self-discovery which is practiced while sitting on a meditation cushion. It is the experience of living from moment to moment, in the here and now. It is throught the practice of Zazen that Gautama got enlightened and became the Buddha.

Zazen is an attitude of spiritual awakening, which when practiced, can become the source from which all the actions of daily life flow - eating, sleeping, breathing, walking, working, talking, thinking, and so on.

Zen Buddhism is not a theory, an idea, or a piece of knowledge. It is not a belief, a dogma, or a religion; but rather, it is a practical experience. We cannot intellectually grasp Zen, because human intelligence and wisdom is too limited - the dojo (the hall where Zazen is practiced) is different from the university.

Zen is not a moral teaching, and as it is without dogma, it does not require one to believe in anything. A true spiritual path does not tell people what to believe in, rather it shows them how to think; or, in the case of Zen - what not to think.

Zen Buddhism is not interested in metaphysical theories and rituals, and focuses entirely on the mindful practice of Zazen. Zen is very simple. It is so simple, in fact, that it's very difficult to grasp.

In order to find the true essence of Zen, go beyond this website, travel to Japan, and practice with a real Zen Master.

In the silence of the dojo or temple, simply sit down, stop moving, and let go your thoughts. Focus just on your Zazen posture and your breathing. Keep your back straight. Let your ego and your unconscious mind melt away, merge with the universe.

This is Zen.
