Personal Success Defined in 5 Scientific Principles | Inc.com

Posted: January 22, 2016 at 1:40 pm

There are thousands of books about business success, but most are based upon the author's personal observations and consulting experience. That raises a question: Is there any science to business success?

Surprisingly, you can find a great deal of science in the five basic principles:

We may live in the information age, but human beings are genetically identical to human beings who lived in the Stone Age. Back then, what separated humans from apes was the part of the brain called the neocortex, which in humans is huge compared with other mammals.

An important element of the huge neocortex are what neuroscientists call "mirror neurons"--brain cells that fire both when we do something ourselves or when weobserve somebody else doing the same thing. When a storyteller tells astory with emotion, those emotions are echoed in the listener's mirrorneurons.

According to psychologist Brian Sturm at the University of NorthCarolina, swapping relatable stories brings people closer together andbuilds trust, making them part of the same tribe and therefore appropriateas business partners.

Though stories connect people emotionally, people quickly forget facts provided outside the context of story. In fact, most people forget 90 percent of the information presented to them within "a relatively short period of time."

Therefore, though you will need facts and information to verify and buttress your stories, your success depends upon the stories you tell, because the stories you tell are how your customers and investors decide what it means to do business with you.

More: How to Tell a Business Story

Many companies encourage working long hours under the belief that paying fewer people to do more work increases profit. That belief, however, is unfounded.

According to studies conducted by Ford Motor Company early in the last century, the sweet spot for worker productivity is around 40 hours a week. Adding additional hours creates only a minor increase in productivity that turns negative in three to four weeks.

The problem is that overworked people start making avoidable errors, which then take additional time to correct. The solution, of course, is to "work smarter." But what does that mean?

It certainly doesn't mean adding more technology; there's an obvious correlation between the amount of technology in business and the extension of the workday. Technology makes it easier to work ever longer hours.

The only real way to work smarter is to spend your time doing the things that matter rather than the things that don't. This is a practical application of the Pareto Principle, the economic law that 80 percent of your results come from 20 percent of your actions.

In the business world, the Pareto Principle is best known as the rule of thumb that "80 percent of your sales come from 20 percent of your clients" or sometimes "80 percent of your sales come from 20 percent of your salespeople."

However, Pareto patterns apply to almost all human activity, which means that in most companies only 20 percent of the effort expended generates 80 percent of the results. As a corollary, 80 percent of the effort generates only 20 percent of the results.

You can therefore make yourself and your company more successful by doing more of the 20 percent that really matters and less of the 80 percent that doesn't. BTW, this is the scientific basis for the intuitive notion of core competency.

Conventional business wisdom says your organization will succeed more easily and quickly if you hire as many top performers as possible. In other words, the more superstars on your team, the better your team.

This philosophy lies behind concepts such as stack ranking, in which "a work force is graded in accordance with the individual productivity of its members," and best practice, in which you attempt to recruit candidates who resemble your current top performers.

Though that all sounds reasonable, it doesn't work in practice. Stack ranking results in all sorts of weird and dysfunctional behavior, because employees are goaled on looking good while making others look bad.

Indeed, superstars tend to become successful at the expense of others, according tostatistical analyses of a database of more than 400,000 salespeople and 700 sales forces conducted by Chally Worldwide.

"In practice, top performers often depend heavily on internal resources and connections that if made available to everyone on the sales staff, might damage other parts of the business," explains Chally CEO Howard Stevens.

Business success, however, is always a team effort, which means that successful companies must hire people who can put their egos aside and help everyone to become more effective and efficient.

According to a study recently conducted at MIT and published in the Harvard Business Review, the most effective teams "talk and listen in equal measure, equally among members while lower performing teams have dominant members, teams within teams, and members who talk or listen but don't do both."

It need hardly be said that the latter behaviors are characteristic of superstars rather than team players.

In other words, your company will be more successful if you hire above-average performers who work together as a team than superstars who succeed at the expense of everyone else.

For the past few decades, many companies have tended to look upon corporate ethics as an expense. The assumption is that it's more profitable to cheat than to play fair, as long you don't get caught.

However, groundbreaking research by emeritus business professor and authorRobert B. Cialdiniindicates that cheating generates huge hidden costs, even when leaders think they're getting away with it.

According to Cialdini, employees who know that their company is cheating fall into two categories: those who feel a conflict of values and want to leave, and those who feel perfectly fine with it.

Many of the best employees fall into the first category, which creates expensive churn and turnover. Because turnover costs can easily be two to three times the yearly cost of an employee, the result of cheating is a lower profit margin.

What's worse, the employees who are OK with corporate-level cheating are OK with personal cheating, which explains (among other things) why rogue trading has become so common in the financial industry.

In other words, rather than an unnecessary expense, creating an ethical corporate culture avoids unnecessary expenses that will be incurred even when that company gets away with cheating.

There's no simpler way to put it: Science says that stress is the No. 1 enemy of success. According to the American Psychological Association, stress results in a host of health problems, including headache, muscle tension, muscle pain, chest pain, fatigue, upset stomach, insomnia, anxiety, restlessness, lack of motivation, lack of focus, irritability, depression, eating problems, addiction, and social withdrawal.

Health problems of this sort don't just result in productivity-killing absenteeism but also (when combined with the work-longer-hours ethos) presenteeism, in which staff members go to work even when ill with a communicable disease.

In business, the main sources of stress are the sense that there's too much work to be done and a climate of fear based on the (often accurate) belief that management will punish failure.

There are, of course, many outwardly successful companies that have this type of hard-driving, fear-based culture. However, such companies do eliminate stress on a regular basis--by discarding and then replacing employees who become too burnt out to function.

However, because turnover costs money, a more effective approach is to create an environment that is inherently less stressful by implementing Principles 1 through 4.

More:6 Easy Ways to Reduce Stress

Having a strong, meaningful story creates a sense of community. Only doing what's important reduces both busywork and overwork. Building teams rather than spotlighting prima donnas reduces conflict, as does encouraging honesty and trust.

Not every successful business embodies all five principles, but if you read some of those thousands of books about business success, I'd wager you'll find that all successful businesses implement at least four of them.

Online Degrees in Florida (FL) | Onlinedegrees.com

Posted: at 1:40 pm

Students who intend to pursue a degree, whether in a traditional campus setting or through online education, might find the perfect fit in Florida schools. Higher education is a priority in the state, with 38.1 percent of Florida's working-age population holding a two-year or four-year degree in 2012 -- a nice increase over the 37 percent that held a degree the year before, as reported by the Lumina Foundation. According to the study, over 10 percent of Florida adults held an associate degree that year, 18 percent had their bachelor's, and nine percent had earned a graduate or professional degree.

To get more information, browse through our network of schools and find a program most appropriate for you.

Those interested in joining the ranks of degree holders in Florida can find numerous opportunities through both traditional and online schools. Florida is home to many impressive universities, including such powerhouses as University of Florida, Florida State University, and University of Miami -- an institution ranked 47th among National University Rankings by U.S. News and World Report. Those who prefer distance learning are in luck; the state boasts many aggressive initiatives that aim to bring online education in Florida to more students than ever before.

Florida is home to 14 public four-year institutions and 62 two-year public institutions, setting the stage for numerous degree opportunities. In fact, there are so many institutions of higher learning in the state that all residents live within 50 miles of one, according to Enterprise Florida. The Sunshine State has the most affordable average tuition in the nation, with students graduating from a four-year university at a cost of $46,071, according to the Leaders & Laggards Report from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Those who attend two-year colleges also see low tuition rates, at an average of $38,126 to earn their degree.

Once the degree is complete, there are many booming industries in Florida that could offer opportunities for graduates. Florida has long been a leader in the aerospace and aviation industry, with the largest airport for international cargo, space launch capabilities, and significant operational hubs for powerhouse industry leaders like Lockheed Martin and Boeing. But there are several other industries that might lure graduates, including:

Those who do chose to settle in Florida after graduation can enjoy a cost of living on a par with the average in the United States. In 2012, the median household income for a Florida family was $47,390, according to the U.S. Census. Home ownership was above the national average at 68.1 percent, and the median value of a home was $170,800. Residents might also be happy to know that Florida has no state income tax.

Arts and culture is booming in the state, as is recreation: the state is home to numerous professional sports teams and over 1,000 golf courses. And don't forget the climate: There's a reason Florida is known as the Sunshine State!

Online education in Florida is a leader among all states, with numerous initiatives that offer students the opportunity to earn course credit, continuing education requirements, and full degrees through online-only work. In fact, Florida is home to the nation's first online-only public university, launched in 2014 through the University of Florida system. Complete Florida is another strong move, this one aimed at helping the 2.2 million adults in Florida that have earned college credit go back to school to complete their degree.

The Florida Virtual Campus pulls online courses and degree programs together into a portal, offering students comprehensive information on distance education available at public and private colleges in the state. The website has information on financial aid, admission requirements, university profiles, and more to help ensure that students have all they need to begin their journey through distance learning.

Completing online degrees in Florida has become a popular option for students; roughly 71,000 students systemwide, or 21 percent, complete their undergraduate or graduate degrees entirely online, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. With increasing initiatives for higher education online, as well as colleges like Florida State and Florida A&M University providing new offerings over the last few years, distance learning in Florida is definitely enjoying an upward trend.

When choosing an online college, students should conduct the same in-depth research they would for any other institution. "Completing a bachelor's or master's degree is an investment that can provide returns for the rest of your working life, so take the time to choose the one that's right for you and that requires doing some homework," says Patrick Partridge, who handles marketing and enrollment for Western Governor's University.

"It's important to find a school that's accredited and one that is respected and legitimate in the eyes of hiring managers and other institutions," he adds. "Call enrollment offices, ask for the experiences of students and alumni on schools' Facebook pages, and read objective news coverage about the university you're looking into. Also, realize that higher cost does not always mean higher quality. For example, competency-based education programs, such as those offered at WGU, rewards students for knowledge and skills they already possessed -- helping them save both time and money."

Those looking for job security and a great paycheck should look no further than these top careers in Florida. As with most states in the nation, the majority of the top-paying jobs are in the medical field; in fact, with the exception of chief executives and physicists, the highest-paying jobs in Florida include doctors, surgeons, psychiatrists, and orthodontists, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Florida schools that focus on medical disciplines are a good bet for those who want to take advantage of the high salaries commanded by doctors, surgeons, and the like. Excellent opportunities are available at the Florida College of Medicine (University of Florida), the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine (University of Miami), and the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine (Florida Atlantic University), among others. The University of Florida also ranks in the top 50 for graduate nursing degrees, according to U.S. News and World Report, while the University of Central Florida ranks among the top 25 in the nation for online nursing degrees.

Professions outside the medical world that bring in top dollar include airline pilot, air traffic controller, and engineering manager, reports Economic Modeling Specialists Intl, or EMSI. The fastest-growing careers are also a good area to research, as students certainly need to know where the majority of jobs are before they embark on a degree program. Since 2007, physicians and surgeons, lawyers, physical therapists, computer software engineers in applications, chief executives, and occupational therapists have seen the greatest growth, according to EMSI. Here's what students need to know to get started on these excellent degree paths:

Florida is definitely the home of sun and fun, as evidenced by the vast numbers of students who take to its beaches every year to celebrate spring break. Here are a few major cities in the state that deserve a mention:

Back to:Top

Not sure which area of Florida is best? Students can embark on a roadtrip just like this one to hit various colleges and universities that might suit their fancy:

Taking a drive through Florida promises to be filled with great scenery, sunny weather, and more than a few colleges and universities to admire along the way. Start at Jacksonville, right at the Georgia border, and take some time to admire the ocean before visiting the University of North Florida. While there, students can stroll the handsome campus of Trinity Baptist College or say hello at Florida Technical College.

Heading down the coast, students will find more surf and sun, as well as Daytona Beach, where they can stop at Bethune-Cookman University -- and don't forget the community colleges along the way. Continuing down the coast takes the roadtrip to the University of Central Florida and the Florida Institute of Technology. Heading further south, students cruise into Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami -- home to numerous universities, both public and private. From Florida International University to Miami International University of Art and Design, there are several to choose from -- but the biggest by far is University of Miami.

After a day in Key West to touch the southernmost point of the United States, it's back on the road and up the west coast to Naples, then Fort Myers and Sarasota -- with stops to admire Hodges University, Southwest Florida College, and New College of Florida. Further up is University of Tampa, Valencia College, and a few hours later, Gainesville -- home of the University of Florida.

But there's still the panhandle, with more beaches to enjoy and plenty of higher education. Tallahassee offers Florida A&M University for student consideration, while sunny Panama City is home to Gulf Coast State College. Take a drive to the corner of the state and say hello to Pensacola State College before driving out into Alabama.

No matter where a student chooses to go to school, one big question must be addressed: How much will it cost? Whether students opt for a state school, private institution, community college, or online education, there is no doubt that higher education can be expensive. Fortunately, financial aid is available to help students pay the tuition, fees, room and board, and other costs that come along with going to college.

Florida is very generous with financial assistance. According to the Leaders & Laggards Report, students at the four-year university level receive an average of $41,647 in state and local funding to complete their degree, which is slightly above the national average. Those in two-year colleges reap the biggest benefits, however, with $21,115 in average state and local funding -- putting Florida in the top five states in the nation for two-year funding.

In addition to this aid, there are numerous scholarship options available to Florida students. Many scholarship and grant programs are administered by the Florida Department of Education, but there are also many options through local, regional and private organizations or companies. 3 Positive mental attitude tips How to develop positive …

Posted: at 1:40 pm

Its long been said that a Positive mental attitude is fundamental for a person to build a business.

So it becomes a very important part to know how to develop positive attitude in business and Ill share some positive mental attitude tips to your in order to achieve it.

But, before that, I want to clarify

Id say, the difference between a positive mental attitude and a negative mental attitude, is the way of thinking consists of certain emotions.

What does it mean?

If youve followed me and this blog for a while, you might have seen the emotional chart in my previous blog posts like the one I talked about state of consciousness.

When the way of your thinking consists of negative emotions like lack, hatred, worries, anger, doubt, fear etc.

Its a negative mental attitude.

Alternatively, when your way of thinking is based on positive emotions like appreciation, love, joyous, hope, eagerness etc.

Then its a positive mental attitude.

When I first started my business online, I was literally getting in with bare foots, knowing nothing about online marketing, knowing nothing about how long itd take to build this business

but knowing nothing is not critical

I could learn, I could study, I could imitate other successful marketers, and I worked damn hard

But, it didnt really working out for me.

It was getting worse:

I was in debt but I didnt see any results in my business.

I didnt know why and I was so frustrating

Until I watched A LIFE CHANGING VIDEO like this

It was like shocked by a powerful thought in my mind and I realized that all I was thinking was lack, fear, anxiety

And what I really needed to do is to nurture my mind to possess a positive mental attitude.

When I took back the control of my mind and the way of thinking Things changed.

My marketing strategies didnt change, the messages I sent to my prospect didnt change, but my results completely changed.

It was like a paradigm shift in my life.

My business started getting results, debt cleared, frustration vanished.

Some people around me said it was my luck coming back

but as I think back when my mental attitude changed, my emotions changed, my feelings changed, and everything surrounding me changed

And Im certain that its all about how to develop positive attitude.

To develop a positive mental attitude, you have to first know how to allow yourself to think of good feeling or positive emotional thinking.

Heres the deal:

When I say allow yourself, I really mean it.

You have to ALLOW yourself to feel good.

This is because I found that most of the time people get into a negative mental attitude is simply because they didnt let go the negative emotions

And the longer they dwell on the thought, the more they think they need to feel that bad.

But our mind SHOULDNTwork in that way.

There is literally a part of our brain called Reticular Activating System(RAS) which would direct our actions and emotions to what we think about most frequently.

And the worst is:

The more you think about certain thoughts, these thoughts will become your core beliefs.

So, the positive mental attitude tips Im gonna give you here is:

Always let go of your thoughts.

And I know that sometimes its hard to put down all your thoughts and BE POSITIVE immediately

so, another positive mental attitude tips Im gonna give you here is

EMPTY YOUR MIND

Emptying your mind is powerful because whatever strong negative emotions you are going through right now, once you put down all your thoughts and empty your mind

You just simply go back to PEACE.

Just a static peace of mind.

When you ALLOW yourself to be in this peace of mind, you are giving yourself the power to choose what you want to experience next.

So, the next positive mental attitude tips is:

Consciously and deliberately choose what you want to experience.

This trick is extremely powerful to me especially when I was in a down time

Whenever I realized that I have any negative emotions about something, I could instantly redirect my thought to what I really want to experience about this thing.

And the more I do it, I can feel there is literally a momentum of energy, a flow of relief in my stomach to my chest.

You feel good with this flow of feeling, and when you feel good You SEE things differently.

When you feel good, you can appreciate others and things.

When you feel good, you can think and act positively.

And when you feel good, you are in the static of positive mental attitude.

These are 3 quick positive mental attitude tips I wanna share with you.

Do you like sharing interesting life-hacking topics to others?

Will you THINK its even more awesome if you can build up an income on the internet platform by sharing it on a BLOG like this?

Heres what I offer to you

I am currently coaching average people with no experience to make an extra income online by blogging in a blog like this.
