At one time, I could not do this with a 30 pound dumbbell in my hand. I started out with no weights.

When I train I don't usually focus on how much calorie or fat I burn. Furthermore, if I'm not training for anything specific, such as a show or a shoot, I don't worry about "how long" my workout should be.

Depending on how I feel that day or how much time I have, sometimes my workouts are 10 minutes, sometimes 20, 30 or 40 minutes. I train with a focus on improved strength, performance and health, not too dependent on time or calorie count.

Hence, I create and include a lot of different strength challenges into my workouts such as this renegade row from push-up to side plank with 30lbs dumbbell.

Whether to lean up or change your body composition, if you want to achieve real sustainable results that last a life time, do not workout with the sole purpose of calorie burn or fat burn. Focus on strength-building instead. Training for strength is way more funand when you're well-fed, it can be far more effective at helping you stay lean than training solely for fat-loss.

No need to stress, just know that if you're getting stronger and your performance is improving, your body will burn, grow, sculpt and ship-shape itself to match the way you challenge it. Then, if you want to see more results, you can start honing down on very specific workout programs to further your goal. But don't be surprised, you might just love the way you look and feel at that point and won't feel the need for more. 😉

Self Help for Adult ADHD

Posted: at 12:44 pm

By Tammy Preston, MS

While taking drugs and attending therapy are two popular and sometimes necessary ways to cope with ADHD, some people have managed their condition themselves through the dozens of self-help methods out there. Once someone knows that they have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, they can start to compensate for its effects and manage the symptoms themselves, empowering themselves and becoming more confident along the way.

While environmental theories of why people have ADHD still persist, recent brain chemical studies have shown that the cause of ADHD lies in the biochemical processes in the neurotransmitters in the brain, and that it has a genetic factor. Just because ADHD is something that people have not caused themselves however, does not mean that it is something they can not have a substantial role in managing.

Doing things like educating themselves about their condition, scheduling their life with their condition in mind, and finding support amongst friends can lead someone to have a much happier and healthier relationship to their condition. By giving themselves more time than they think to perform a task, setting themselves reminders, and just leaving a little breathing space into their schedule, some people are learning to manage their condition without the help of drugs. Job performance and social skills can also be helped greatly through techniques of mindfullness and practice.

It may be harder for someone suffering with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder to do certain things, but this does not make it impossible, and many adults with the condition are learning alot about themselves along the way.

Fibromyalgia – Self-help – NHS Choices

Posted: at 12:44 pm

If you have fibromyalgia, there are several ways to change your lifestyle to help relieve your symptoms and make your condition easier to live with.

Your GP, or another healthcare professional treating you, can offer advice and support about making these changes part of your everyday life.

There are organisations to support people with fibromyalgia that may also be able to offer advice. VisitUK Fibromyalgia's support group section for a list of support groups across the country. You may also find it helpful to talk to other people with fibromyalgia on this online community.

Below are some tips that may help relieve symptoms of fibromyalgia. You can also read more information about living with pain.

As fatigue (extreme tiredness) and pain are two of the main symptoms of fibromyalgia, you may find that you're not able to exercise as much as you'd like. However, an exercise programme specially suited to your condition can help you manage your symptoms and improve your overall health.

Your GP or physiotherapist (healthcare professional trained in using physical techniques to promote healing) can design you a personal exercise programme, which is likely to involve a mixture of aerobic and strengthening exercises.

Aerobic activities are any kind of rhythmic, moderate-intensity exercises that increase your heart rate and make you breathe harder. Examples include:

Research suggests that aerobic fitness exercises should be included in your personalised exercise plan, even if you can't complete these at a high level of intensity. For example, if you find jogging too difficult, you could try brisk walking instead.

A review of a number of studies found that aerobic exercises may improve quality of life and relieve pain. As aerobic exercises increase your endurance (how long you can keep going), these may also help you function better on a day-to-day basis.

Resistance and strengthening exercises are those that focus on strength training, such as lifting weights. These exercises need to be planned as part of a personalised exercise programme; if they aren't, muscle stiffness and soreness could be made worse.

A review of a number of studies concluded that strengthening exercises may improve:

People with fibromyalgia who completed the strengthening exercises in these studies said they felt less tired, could function better and experienced a boost in mood.

Improving the strength of your major muscle groups can make it easier to do aerobic exercises.

Read more information and advice onhealth and fitness.

If you have fibromyalgia, it's important to pace yourself. This means balancing periods of activity with periods of rest, and not overdoing it or pushing yourself beyond your limits.

If you don't pace yourself, it could slow down your progress in the long term. Over time, you can gradually increase your periods of activity, while making sure they're balanced with periods of rest.

If you have fibromyalgia, you will probably have some days when your symptoms are better than others. Try to maintain a steady level of activity without overdoing it, but listen to your body and rest whenever you need to.

Avoid any exercise or activity that pushes you too hard, because this can make your symptoms worse. If you pace your activities at a level that's right for you, rather than trying to do as much as possible in a short space of time, you should make steady progress.

For example, it may help to start with gentler forms of exercisesuch as tai chi, yoga andpilates before attempting more strenuous aerobic or strengthening exercises.

If you have fibromyalgia, it's important to regularly take time to relax or practice relaxation techniques.Stress can make your symptoms worse or cause them to flare up more often. It could also increase your chances of developing depression.

There are many relaxation aids available, including books, tapes and courses, although deep-breathing techniques or meditation may be just as effective. Try to find time each day to do something that relaxes you. Taking time to relax before bed may also help you sleep better at night.

Talking therapies, such as counselling, can also be helpful in combating stress and learning to deal with it effectively. Your GP may recommend you try this as part of your treatment.

Fibromyalgia can make it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep (known asinsomnia). If you have problems sleeping, it may help to:

USDA Blog Self Help Housing Program

USDA RD officials and Little Dixie Community Action Agency celebrated HOM with new homeowner, Caysa Mejia and family, in St. Charles Parish and presented a flag to the new home owner. From left to right: John Audibert, USDA RD Housing Specialist, Randy Griffith, Little Dixie Community Action Agency Self-Help Specialist, Joyce Allen, USDA RD Single Family Housing Deputy Administrator, new home owner, Caysa Mejia and her two daughters, Kelita Pete, Executive Director, Family Resources of New Orleans, and USDA RD Louisiana State Director Clarence W. Allie Lane was full of excitement and activity. On this short street in the small town of Luling in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana, I was proud to celebrate National Homeownership Month by breaking ground for a new home.

I humbly watched as Jacqueline Campbell, Kimberly Dunn, and Paulette Alexander eagerly picked out shovels to participate in the symbolic dirt toss at the site cleared for construction of the next Self-Help home on Allie Lane. They are all currently renting and ready to roll up their sleeves and go to work to build a better future together for their families. Read more

This year, Independence Day will be even more meaningful for tens of thousands of families across the nation. With financing assistance from USDA, they will be able to gather their loved ones in their own homes and back yards to celebrate the holiday as homeowners.

As the Administrator for USDAs housing programs, I spent the past weeks celebrating National Homeownership Month with rural families who are achieving the American Dream with USDA assistance. On the final day of the month-long celebration, I joined families who are now constructing their homes through USDAs Mutual Self-Help program, as well as another group of families moving into their new homes just in time to celebrate the Fourth of July. Recently, I visited the Habitat for Humanity homes on Cape Cod, Massachusetts in celebration of National Homeownership Month, a time to recognize the important role that housing plays in the economy. The construction of these homes was made possible through loans from USDA Rural Development (RD).

The partnership between USDA Rural Development and the Cape Cod Chapter of Habitat for Humanity continues to help provide numerous low-income families with safe, affordable, and well-built homes. USDA Rural Development and the Cape Cod Chapter of Habitat for Humanity first partnered in 2011. In FY 2013, USDA Rural Development financed four out of five of the Habitat homes built on Cape Cod, and they are currently on track to finance eight more Habitat homes being built on Cape Cod in FY 2014. Wayne Bodley (far right) built his home through the Self-Help program with assistance from USDA Rural Development and the Housing Assistance Corporation. Bodley designed the bear which is displayed in downtown Hendersonville, NC, and will be auctioned off to benefit the local Self-Help program.

In celebration of USDAs annual Homeownership Month,I toured a flourishing neighborhood tucked in the woodsofEdneyville, North Carolina. Along with me were familieswho never thought it possible to own a home or have a yard for their children or a garden. Their dreams were realized by building not only their own home, but the homes of their neighbors too! In the process, they also built enduring bonds of a caring community.

This neighborhood is beingdeveloped by the private, nonprofit Housing Assistance Corporation (HAC)of Hendersonville using Rural Developments Self-Help Housing program. Since 1971, USDA has helped buildmore than50,000 across the nation. Through theSelf Help Housing program, homeowners save money and earn sweat equity toward their homes by completing 65% of the labor. Ten to 12 families pool their efforts and work a minimum of 40 hours a week working on all the homes and no one moves into their home until every home is completed. Working together, families pour foundations, frame homes, install electrical wiring, hang doors and windows, and lay tile and paint. Their sweat equity qualifies as their down payment. Once completed, USDA Rural Development provides the families with mortgages through the Single Family Housing Direct Loan Program. Read more

Reyanna Nastarcios grandchildren hold the American flag that was presented to her by Rural Development Housing Administrator Tony Hernandez and State Director Terry Brunner.

By mid-morning the wind was howling and blowing the auburn colored sand across Zuni Pueblo located in western New Mexico.

But this was the last thing on the minds of Kay Panteah, Reyanna Nastarcio and Martha Sheche tribal members of Zuni Pueblo. This is the day they celebrate the completion of construction of their new homesthe homes they built with their own hands with the help of family and friends.

At last, this day has finally arrivedafter all of those days of hanging drywall, driving nails, and painting walls. After a year of hard work they are being honored by an age-old tradition where their community comes together and celebrates a special feast day. A celebration that includes a blessing of thanks, song and dance by the Zuni Olla Maidens where they rejoice in the homecoming for these three women who have worked hard to attain the title of homeowner and to create a home for their families. I just wanted to extend my thanks to you as a repeated customer. It is great to know that there is a helping hand out there whenever I feel the need for it.

What is Self Help: Confidence, Self Esteem, Panic, Anxiety …

Posted: at 12:44 pm

There are no magic cures. There are no magic therapists.

All psychological help is essentially self help.

FIRST AND FOREMOST is having the will the will to want to change a part of your life that isnt working. It makes no difference how much or how little determination a person has; without that will, all the best therapy and techniques in the world will be largely ineffective.

But start to actually want something really really badly, and its amazing how often you find the means to make it so.

Expectation is the other vital ingredient. A belief that a positive change will happen as a result of something youre doing. What a person expects has an uncanny habit of actually happening.

How often have you thought something would turn out badly... then it did? Well now is time to expect a positive outcome for a change.

Self help has often been criticised for trying to provide easy answers to difficult problems, and the only people who benefit are those selling the ideas. I dont think thats entirely true. Like most things in life; theres good and theres not so good, and Id like to think that here youll find the good!

Indeed, the answers are often simple, but putting those answers into practice can be a little trickier. Many self help products promise a quick fix, leading a person to believe they dont have to do very much in order to get results. Thats why they often fail to deliver what they promise; they dont encourage a person to make that effort.

Its like anything in life; first you put in some hard work, then you reap the rewards.

Consider learning something new; maybe a subject at college or university, or perhaps a self study course. I think youll agree, its not enough to listen casually to the lectures and browse through the books. A good therapist is like a good teacher and a good self help product is like a good book, but those alone wont guarantee a successful student. A certain amount of time and effort on your part is also imperative.

Sometimes however, all the will in the world just doesnt seem quite enough. You know what to do but cant quite make it work in practice. The subconscious mind is very strong, and when it thinks it knows best, its very hard to overrule.

This might be the time to enlist the help of a good therapist. Somebody to really assist your self help endeavours and help break through that mental barrier. Teaching you something you didnt already know, or giving you a better understanding or new perspective on something you thought you did.

But remember... theyre still only the teacher, and its you who must do the actual work.

As I said above, the stumbling block often lies in the subconscious mind. It thinks it knows best and resists trying something new. But its hard to get in touch with that part of the mind because, by definition, its below the normal level of awareness; sub-conscious. Hypnosis however, is extremely good at communicating with it, and sometimes thats all thats needed to start making real progress.

So if youve hit a bit of a mental block but dont feel comfortable seeking professional help in person, self hypnosis is something that can make a big difference.

There are many inexpensive downloads recommended throughout the site, and also many self help books.

These two important points as you use this site:

Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County

Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County

NLSLA operates ten Self-Help Legal Access Centers across Los Angeles Countythe largest network of self-help centers in California. Piloted by Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, the NLSLA Centers have helped close to a million people access the courts during the past decade. The Centers are staffed by NLSLA advocates, legal services partners staff, dedicated volunteers, and Justice Corps students.

The Centers provide guidance to litigants:

Self-Help Centers are located at Courthouses in Antelope Valley, Compton, Inglewood, Long Beach, Pasadena, Pomona, San Fernando, Santa Monica, Torrance, and Van Nuys.

Through no fault of their own, purely for financial reasons, too many members of our community have found themselves locked out of our civil justice system when they most need help with family law matters, health and housing problems, and consumer, small-business or employment disputes. For these residents, Neighborhood Legal Services and the Self-Help Legal Access Centers they operate are the key to the courthouse door, and Im very proud of what theyve been able to accomplish over the past 15 years.

Client Story: Self-Help Center Empowers Grandmother in Custody Case

When Louise Reaves daughter could no longer take care of her own young child, Louise knew she could give the three-year-old girl a stable, loving home. But she soon found herself unable to navigate a time-consuming, financially debilitating custody case.

I was going through a hard time emotionally, financially, she said. I just didnt know what to do.

Thats when Louise remembered hearing about a place at the Van Nuys Courthouse that helps litigants through the often-overwhelming process of family law matters. At the center, Louise worked with a Neighborhood Legal Services attorney who helped her get a guardianship. Now, her granddaughter is thriving in a safe, healthy environment.

It was like an angel that just dropped out of the sky, Louise said. God sent me an angel to get through this. And now everything is ok. Its a good feeling to know that there is help.

Self-Help creates a space either in reality or in cyberspace where women can share information about our bodies and health care in a non-judgmental, caring way.

In your home

You can use your speculum and do self-exam to apply this knowledge at home.

With other women

You can reach out to your friends and acquaintances to share self-vaginal exam in a group setting. You can discover solutions together to everyday health concerns and feel glad.

Practical Applications of Self-Help

You can get the benefit of knowledge about different women's health concerns that has been gathered by self helpers over the years.

The Self-Help Method is Global

Women around the world have used the self-help method we developed to set up health projects. For example, in India, in the mid-1980s, womens health groups established a group called Shodhini (in the Indian language, shodhini means researcher). Their small group used self-examination with the speculum to learn about their bodies. They became "barefoot gynecologists" and then went on to gain the knowledge to challenge the Western medical approach on many of the health problems in India, such as using herbs to deal with women's common health problems. They are now reviving traditional approaches to controlling the spread of malaria and treating malaria with the many medicinal herbs found in the vast Indian forests. drugs to combat malaria instead of preventing infection and using herbs.
