A southern Indiana coroner says a man slain by an officerwas in the midst of a schizophrenic episode when he swung a baseball bat at the officer.
An Evansville police officer fatally shot 55-year-old Ricky Ard outside a federal courthouse where he had smashed windows with a bat Tuesday, a day after being escorted from that building.
Vanderburgh County Coroner Steve Lockyear tells the Evansville Courier & Press Ard was having a schizophrenic episode and was fixated on an Evansville businessmans unsolved 1977 car-bombing death when he encountered the officer.
A statement from Ards family says he had a long, documented history of mental illness.
A preliminary police investigation found the officer was justified in shooting Ard.
A police video shows the officer attempt to use a stun gun on Ard, and Ard swinging a bat at the officer before he fired.

SUTHERLIN The Bulldogs really need a win.
The Sutherlin High football team has gone almost two complete seasons without a win. Last year, they were 0-9 and the year before 1-6, and after some devastating and heartbreaking losses in the last two years, a win could do wonders for the Bulldogs mental attitude.
It seemed like every time they looked to be heading for a score, a turnover, untimely penalty or just a botched play would stall the drive. The Bulldogs were outscored 349-87 and just had a hard time getting the ball into the end zone.
There were so many games the last two years, it wasnt about our abilities, it was about the opponents just making a play, getting a stop, or bad bounce, or if we just hold onto the ball. So getting some success early with this group, I think could snowball for us, said fifth-year coach Sean Radford, whose teams still have not won a Sky-Em League game since moving into the league three seasons ago.
The Sutherlin offense will have to pick up the pace after getting shut out three times last year, and scoring just one touchdown in three other games.
At quarterback, the Bulldogs have experience in senior Zach Yarbrough (5-foot-10, 155 pounds) but two others are competing for the starting spot.
Juniors Cade Meisner (5-11, 160), who played quarterback on the JV team last year, and Anthony Friesen (6-1, 175) are both in the mix.
If we can get a guy who just takes over the job and makes good decisions, and hopefully makes some good plays, that would be really nice for us to see, but that is a question mark, said Radford.
Whoever wins the job will have some pass catchers to throw to. The receiving positions might be Sutherlins strongest and deepest spot in the lineup.
We have a lot of guys we can throw in there and keep us fresh, and have some speed, Radford said.
Senior Korbyn Jones (6-4, 200) and Junior J.R. Bailey (6-6, 240) will alternate at tight end, and several others will rotate at wide receiver. Senior Tristan Vincent (5-8, 145) has some speed and was the leading receiver last year with 18 catches. Hes one of several receivers who will see a lot of playing time.
We have a lot of guys returning and a lot of young guys that are really working hard for a spot, said Vincent. I think we have the quarterbacks that can get us the ball, and they have really good throwing arms and are putting in the work in practice.
Jones feels they have the pieces to make the offense go.
All of us come out here every day, running our routes, trying to make them more crisp and were pretty set, I think well be fine, Jones said.
Senior Conner Grauf (6-0, 190) is a bruising runner. He carried the ball an average of 13 times a game last year and had a season-high 126 yards against North Valley. He ran for six touchdowns during the season, three of those in the final game against Yamhill-Carlton.
Radford thinks he will have a competitive team. Hes had only five seniors in fall camp, but feels he has some quality athletes.
We have back almost all of our linebacking corps. The biggest loss on defense was Tristan Needam at safety and were trying to figure out who to fit in there, said Radford. Up front we bring Korbyn (Jones) and J.R. (Bailey) back at defensive end, and feel really good about them.
Grauf and senior Andrew Smalley (6-0, 225) are returning starters at linebacker, and theyll be pretty solid there, as long as they can avoid injuries.
Will Singleton (6-0, 190, junior) comes back and hes a strong player, Grauf said. He has a nose for the ball, and Hunter Fadness (6-0, 160, junior) will probably be a strong safety and hes really picking it up quickly. Hell be a huge asset for our defense.
Radford says senior cornerbacks Bryce Anderson (5-10, 160) and Vincent are good enough to take some pressure off the inside linebackers, so theyll be able to concentrate more on stopping the running game.
On the offensive line, the Bulldogs have Singleton and Zach Lepre (5-10, 195, junior) who both played a lot as sophomores. Sophomores Ashton Pepiot (6-0, 240), Hunter Strong (5-10, 190) and junior Austin Owens (6-6, 235) all come up from the JV and have gotten bigger and stronger.
We wont have a senior on our line, and I think were finally in a position where we can build some depth there, which we havent had, Radford said.
As always, with a small turnout, the Bulldogs cant afford many injuries.
Seven starters back on both sides of the ball, and they feel theyll be competitive, but they badly need a win to get over a big mental hurdle. The turnout is better this year with about 35 players showing up for fall practice, and thats still not as many bodies as Radford would like.
From one to 35, we really like the group that we have and were optimistic about it, said Radford.
The Bulldogs open at Oakland at 7 p.m. Friday night and the rivalry has been heating up the last two years, but Jones says theyre trying not to get too caught up in it.
Were going to focus on the game and get prepared mentally and be physically ready. Theyre a tough team, but were tough too, Jones said.

Dr. Selye said: Adopting the right attitude can convert a negative stress into a positive one.
Consider this similar quote from Dale Carnegie: Happiness doesn't depend on any external conditions, it is governed by our mental attitude.
Then, back to investing and attitude, note what Warren Buffett said: Our advantage, is attitude: we learned from Ben Graham that the key to successful investing was the purchase of shares in good businesses when market prices were at a large discount from underlying business values. When you invest, focus on your circle of competence. Draw a circle around the businesses you understand and then eliminate those that fail to qualify on the basis of value, good management, and limited exposure to hard times.
Buffett has gone on to say: Keep it simple. Value Investing ideas seem so simple and commonplace. It seems like a waste of time to go to school and get at PhD, and having someone tell you the ten commandments are all that matter. An investor cannot obtain superior profits from stocks by simply committing to a specific investment category or style. He or she can earn them only by carefully evaluating facts and continuously exercising discipline.
So, if you keep things simple, carefully evaluate the important facts, and continuously exercise discipline, you can make your process a bit easier and have a bit more fun.

VESTABURG Both teams wanted it, but it was Luke Burns and the Montabella running game that had enough in the tank to squeak out a 22-20 win over Vestaburg Thursday.
The senior fullback bulled his way into the end zone twice in the fourth quarter, the last one from two yards out with 2:04 to play in the game to take the lead for good, to help his Mustangs (1-1 overall) come from behind to win.
This was amazing. This was hard work paying off because I just really wanted to beat them, said Burns, who finished with 234 rushing yards on 29 carries and two touchdowns. We played as a team and we came together and worked as a team. This is a great rivalry.

Teammate David Shattuck added 101 yards rushing on 10 carries, including a 57-yard touchdown scamper that opened up the scoring for the Mustangs in the first quarter (two-point conversion was good).
Overall, Montabella racked up 375 rushing yards on the Wolverines (0-2).
We just got gassed at the end, Vestaburg head coach Dan Ryckman said. This was a tough one to lose. They played their hearts out, but weve played two teams now that are bigger in size but we hung in there. We just didnt make enough plays at the end.
Vestaburgs offense was stalled by the Mustangs defense the entire first half, as the Wolverines went into halftime down 8-0, however, Vestaburgs Trenton Ketner intercepted Montabella quarterback Jordan Balhorns pass at Vestaburgs 30-yard line on Montabellas opening drive of the second half, which sparked the Wolverines sideline.
Vestaburg Seth Stratton got the ball down to the 1-yard line with a pass to Kegan Crooks and junior running back Dalton Denman punched it into the end zone one play later to get the Wolverines on the board.

After recovering an onside kick, Stratton and company charged down the field and finished another scoring drive with a four-yard pass to senior Noah Johnston to take the lead 14-8 in the third quarter.
Vestaburg struck again in the fourth quarter when Stratton ran 37 yards into the end zone to put Vestaburg up 20-8 with 8:28 to go.
But Burns wasnt finished yet, capping a Montabella drive with a 17-yard touchdown run with 6:44 left in the game to pull within six of Vestaburg.
We had to get motivated again and shut them down. We couldnt let them just walk all over us, Burns said. We had to hang with them and it meant we needed to get motivated again.
Montabella recovered an onside kick on the ensuing kick-off, getting the ball back at the 49-yard line with 6:12 to go. Thats when the Mustangs meticulous running game made its final push, with Burns leading the way.
Hes a horse, Balhorn said of Burns. The unfortunate thing is we ask so much out of that young man, and we have other running backs who are talented, too, but they knew he was getting the ball and they still couldnt stop him. Hes got a mental attitude and edge that hes not going to go down easy, and it worked well for him.
Junior Marshall Wright sealed Montabellas win with his interception on Vestaburgs last drive with 1:21 to go.
Stratton finished 5-for-17 passing for 101 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He rushed for 61 yards on eight carries.
Dalton Denman rushed for 41 yards on 13 carries with one touchdown for Vestaburg and Noah Johnston finished with five receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown. Ketner led the defense with 10 tackles and one interception, followed by Johnston with 10 tackles.
For Montabellas defense, senior Wyatt Sackett led the team with eight tackles and a sack, while Jordan Balhorn finished with seven tackles and one pass break-up.
Montabella will host Carson City-Crystal while Vestaburg travels to Coleman next Friday.

Colts pull away from Lions to move to 2-0 – Indiana Gazette

NORTHERN CAMBRIA Northern Cambria and United entered Friday nights game with a lot in common.
Both teams made the playoffs last year and returned a solid core. Both teams are big and strong up front and like to run the ball. And both teams got off to a good start last week with victories.
But the Colts separated themselves from the Lions with a 28-12 win in a Heritage Conference football game at Duffy Daugherty Field, improving to 2-0 for the second straight season.
Northern Cambria ultimately won the battle on the line of scrimmage, and the offense managed 347 total yards compared to the Lions 174.
We knew coming in that theyre a good football team, United coach Kevin Marabito said. Theyre big up front. They gave us fits, and we had a couple injuries. We werent disciplined enough to win a football game.
The two teams had something in common during the game, too: Both had to make adjustments due to injuries.
Neither could find the rhythm they wanted in the rushing game with their running backs out.
The Lions lost starter Tylor McLaughlin, who rushed for 162 yards last week, early in the second quarter.
Hes probably going to be out, our guard is probably going to be out and our quarterback I dont know, Marabito said. Were pretty-well dinged up. But its the next guy up. Thats what we always say.
With one of their starters in sweatpants on the sideline and another banged up in the first quarter, it took the Colts a while to get their running game going. Although once they did, they rolled up 247 yards on the ground.
We really couldnt find our groove, Northern Cambria coach Sam Shutty said. We challenged our guys just to play our game. And I dont want to say they took us out of the game, but not having Logan Onkst tonight really threw off our balance. We had some younger guys in there, tried to do a couple things with some older guys and move people around. But we just didnt execute very well.
When one of our guys go down, the other ones have to pick the load up. Ben (Vasil) got dinged up early, and I didnt know if we were going to have him, either. Then (Adam) Kopera came in and did a good job, but he wasnt quite proficient in what we wanted to do. Its just a lack of reps and a matter of getting better.
Mark Marino passed for 100 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 91 yards and a score to lead the Colts.
Right off the bat, Northern Cambria was experiencing dj vu. Last week, the Colts started the game on defense and allowed Penns Manor to drive right down the field. Friday night, the Colts started on defense and let the Lions march right down the field.
Theyre slow-starting, and thats the thing we have to improve, Shutty said of his defense. I know I get mad at them at a game, but when you watch film, they are very aggressive. They swarm to the ball. But we have to be faster off the start. We let them drive down the field opening drive. Last game, same thing right down the field. Then they tighten up and kind of get their legs and really get after it.
On the 10th play of the opening possession, Uniteds Kyle Silk seemingly was stopped at the line of scrimmage, but he broke loose for a 21-yard dash to the end zone. However, the touchdown was negated by what the officials said was a false start penalty, meaning the play should have been whistled dead before Silk ever took off. The two teams combined for 18 penalties.
On the next play, Silk mishandled a bad snap that was recovered by Northern Cambrias John Paronish, putting and end to the Lions early momentum.
That hurt. Those are things we didnt do last week, Marabito said. We were perfect with things like that. Tonight, things just didnt go our way.
The Colts capitalized, and Marino hit Frankie Jones for a 40-yard touchdown pass with 3:44 left in the first quarter to take a 6-0 lead.
In the second quarter, United turned the ball over on downs with 1:08 left at the Northern Cambria 21-yard line. The Colts cruised down the field and capped the drive with a 21-yard pass from Marino to Vasil as time expired, giving them a 14-0 advantage going into halftime. The touchdown was set up by a 34-yard pass from Marino to Paronish.
Northern Cambria passed just twice in the first week, but put the ball in the air 10 more times Friday. Marino finished 4-for-12.
This was something we watched on film. We thought wed have the pass, Shutty said. Protection I was worried about, and it showed early. But we were able to get some throws down field for big plays. And we dropped some big plays. Thats the trouble with that, so we have to get better there.
United tried to pass the ball more, too, and also threw 10 more passes Friday than in its first game. Silk finished 4 of 17 for 49 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
The Lions got on the board in the third quarter on a 10-yard pass from Silk to Nate Fabrizio at the 5:39 mark after the Colts fumbled on the opening drive of the second half.
Northern Cambria then answered with touchdowns on back-to-back drives a 10-yard run by Kopera and a 1-yard run by Marino and took a 28-6 lead with 9:06 remaining in the game.
The Lions scored on their final possession, a 13-yard run by Dom Eritano with 24 seconds left to finalize the score. Silk had to be helped off the field after the two-point conversion attempt failed.
It was gut-check time for us, Marabito said. A couple players got hurt, and you have to bounce back. But they have a good football team. We need to cut back on some mistakes. And if we couldve got that first score, it couldve been different, but thats part of the game. The kids played hard. I give them credit. But we have to clean up some of our mistakes.
Scott Yingling added 65 rushing yards for the Colts, and Vasil had 62. Eritano led United with 44 yards.
The Lions will try to rebound next week against a Penns Manor team that is also 1-1 after a come-from-behind win at West Shamokin on Friday.
Well see what type of football team we are, Marabito said. The mental attitude has got to be there, and I feel sure these kids will bounce back. Its a tough one to lose, but those are the ones you have to suck up and go with it.
Northern Cambria faces a daunting task against defending conference and District 6 Class 2A champ Ligonier Valley, which has carried its dominance from last season right through the first two weeks of this one. The Colts then face Homer-Center in their fourth game.
This is what happened last year, Shutty said. We started out 2-0 and we just get into that meat grinder. And these werent easy games. Were banged up. Injuries the first game, injuries this game. And its only going to get tougher.

Quinn reflects on first year in Division 1 golf | The Landmark – The Landmark

HOLDEN One year removed from Wachusett Regional High, Holdens 2016 graduate Owen Quinn has learned valuable lessons in the game of golf, many from his coaches and teammates on the Lehigh University golf team, but some much closer to home.
Quinn, a two-year golf team captain and three-year team MVP for the Mountaineers averaged just 38.9 strokes per nine holes over his four year high school career and was recognized across the region as one of the top up-and-coming golfers. His dad, Fran, most know, has been a professional golfer for decades and has achieved impressive results while on tour. He has competed in the PGA Tour, Web.Com Tour, Asian Tour, Nationwide Tour and the Champions Tour. What better way to learn the nuances of golf than to have home-grown advice coupled with that of the skilled coaches and teammates at a Division 1 school?
My dad has pretty much taught me everything you could be taught about the game of golf from just the basics of a golf swing to the attitude on the course and course management, said Quinn. Ive learned a lot of course management and attitude by carrying for him both in the US Open (2014 US Open in Pinehurst, North Carolina) and other tournaments and you see how professional golfers go about their business in tournament play. I learned so much from him not even teaching me, just watching him. Hes really been my biggest supporter and has always cheered me on.
My mindset to golf has been changed since I began to play at Lehigh because you have to realize that every shots not life or death. You hit a bad shot and its like whatever you go and find it and you hit it again. Its changed my attitude some in that respect and I think its made me a better player.
When I caddie for my dad and see him and other Tour players, you never see guys getting super mad at one bad shot and if they are, theyre probably not very good. You just have to realize that youre not going to hit every shot perfectly. Making your notso good shots playable is what you have to do and Ive focused more on that. I have to keep moving forward when I make a bad shot because its not the end of the world.
If you hit a lot of bad shots, it can be frustrating but you have to keep telling yourself that youre going to hit a good one. My dad always says that if I miss a putt for birdie from fifteen feet, it doesnt matter. Youre going to have another putt in ten minutes. Thats the attitude you have to have. You can have the strongest mental game but if you dont have a good golf swing, you cant be that good. But if you have the best golf swing in the world but you have the wrong mental attitude, you have no chance also.
Quinn became a fast learner upon his arrival at Lehigh and realized that the competition was going to be intense and undeniably challenging, but hard work and his aptitude to learn from others paved the way. He competed in all 22 rounds and ranked third on the Mountain Hawks with a 75.36 stroke average while leading his team in two tournaments. He tied for the team lead with three individual rounds in the 60s and capped the season off with a blistering 67 in the final round of the Patriot League Championship where he tied for thirteenth place overall at 214. And just for good measure, Quinn, a business and economics major, was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll as a follow-up to his National Honor Society membership at WRHS.
Owens just a great kid. He has a very positive attitude and hes always thinking about his teammates and encouraging them if theyve had a tough round, said Lehigh head golf coach Henry DAlberto. His family background and the fact that hes been around the game of golf his whole life helps a lot. I think thats one big reason that hes made the transition to Division 1 golf so well. Hell be a co-captain as a sophomore and hes earned it. Hes just a very special kid.
Once you go to a Division 1 college, everybodys a good player and the competitions great, remarked Quinn of the big step up into the top tier of college golf. It wasnt too intimidating because I feel like a lot of the tournaments I play in during the summer are against younger junior players who all went on to college and it kind of prepared me for that. It was more of an adjustment to the time put in with practice time and just the mindset of a team nature thats looking to win tournaments. Its a different mindset but at the end of the day, youre still playing golf.
Quinn has been active in area tournaments this summer including the Worcester County Amateur where he finished fourth, the Quimet Memorial and US Amateur Qualifier, the latter of which he shot 75-74 and just missed the cut. Besides tournaments he is committed to practice and can be found on courses nearly seven days a week.
If were going to want to play at the level of competition that we do, were going to have to practice every day, he said. But its enjoyable. Its a lot of work, but its good work.
It will be days, not weeks now, before Quinn heads back to Pennsylvania coal country to rejoin teammates and coaches at Lehigh. He is laserfocused on helping his team in fall and spring golf and when leaving central Mass, he is less likely to hear the question asked of him time and again by well-meaning friends and acquaintances, that being what the future looks like in terms of possibly making a career of the sport he loves.
I would love to follow in my dads footsteps, he said. Im going to have to start playing a little better if I want to do that but I have some time. Im only going to be a sophomore but before too much longer I should have a better idea if thats reasonable or not. Ive fortunately been able to see what it does take to make it out there. I know exactly what I need to do if I was ever going to make it. I just need to put in the time and put in the work and hopefully someday itll happen.

Nathalie Emmanuels dedication to health and fitness helps her get through long days on the Game of Thrones set.
English actress Nathalie plays Missandei in HBOs popular show, which had its season seven finale on Sunday (27Aug17), leaving fans with just one final series to go.
Although Nathalie has been known to flash the flesh on the show, the fitness fanatic admits its not just vanity that spurs her on at the gym.
"If you're lethargic and not taking care of yourself, your body has to work 10 times harder on long, busy days, she told Shape magazine. So I decided it was important to maintain a certain level of health and fitness. I became a vegan about four years ago, and I try to stay away from processed foods. I love yoga, boxing, and running.
"(Yoga is) my favourite form of exercise because it isn't just physical. And I consider mental health to be part of my overall health.
Nathalie also shared that her healthy diet includes vegan chocolate, as she doesnt believe in depriving herself of sweet treats.
"Good vegan chocolate has become a thing with me, she smiled. The more you silence your cravings, the bigger they become, so I prefer to have a little bit and get on with my day."
And when asked the advice she'd share with her younger self, the 28-year-old simply said shed tell herself that she was just fine.
"I used to straighten my hair for auditions. But now I want to be remembered for my work, not the way I look, she stated.

A NHS worker was left flabbergasted after learning his unhealthy diet had aged his body by a staggering 22 years.
Patrick Luckie, 51, from Brentwood, Essex, admitted he was aself-confessed junk food fiend, but believed he could get away with eating processed treats because of his trim physique.

Appearing on BBC Ones How To Stay Young, Patrick underwent 23 tests which identified his real body age, compared to that of his birth one.
Hosts Dr Chris van Tulleken and Angela Rippon said many of us are ageing too fast because of our unhealthy modern lifestyles.
Patrick said his long working hours have caused him to regularly snack on chocolate, sweets and crisps.
Tests showed his body age was 73 22 years older than his birth one.
Good grief. Im massively surprised. Its shocking. Its screaming at me that is, he said.
Those numbers really made me think about my future and where Im heading. I need to make positive changes.

Patrick was put on a three month plan, which involved him overhauling his diet and doing more exercise.
He swapped chocolate for nuts, and began eating avocados, fruit, porridge and hummus.
I want to be as healthy on the inside as I look on the outside, he said.
Patrick also visited the John Radcliffe Hospital, where doctors used an ultra scan to check the arteries in his neck.
His arteries were found to be thicker than they should be for someone of his age, which could put him at risk of heart attack or stroke.

I think Ive had my head in the sand for so long but it is better to know, he said.
After 12 weeks, Patrick returned to the lab to see if the changes hed made had a positive effect on his body.
His calorie intake had reduced from 4,157 a day to 2,908, and his cholesterol had plummeted from 6.3 to a healthy 5.1.
He had also knocked nine years off his body age, which is now 64.
Im well pleased with that, Im really chuffed, he said.

The programme also featured Jenifer Tutty, who struggled with insomnia.
The 47-year-oldssleeping problems began last year after she battled ovarian cancer.
Since the operation, my mind was racing and I cant sleep even though I want to, she said.
I definitely think its ageing me more. Sleep is the biggest thing for me, if I could get that done I would be elated.
The experts told her: Sleep is crucial to restore wear and tear in our brains. Its very important for healthy ageing.

Jenifer is told that her real body age is 71. That is terrible, that is so bad, she said.
She was advised to up her exercise regime and taught techniques to combat her insomnia.
She only sleeps for five hours a night, when the recommended amount is eight.
A lack of sleep can put you at risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
Television and anything else in her bedroom that could cause a distraction was banned, and she had to learn how to limit her sleep.
Jenifer is told to go to bed at 1am and wake up at 6am every day.
The idea is that if she restricts her time, shell feel sleepy quicker and should sleep better.
Although Im not sleeping for longer, Ive having longer patches of deep sleep, she said.
My life is completely transformed, Im much happier, more focused.
By learning to sleep better, Jenifer knocked 14 years off her body age to 57.

Ashram Leader and Self-styled Godman Rampal Acquitted in Two Criminal Cases – India West

HISAR A Hisar court Aug. 29 acquitted self-styled godman Rampal in connection with two criminal cases registered against him, citing lack of evidence.
Hisar Judicial Magistrate Mukesh Kumar pronounced the verdict, acquitting Rampal, who heads the Satlok Ashram in Barwala, and his followers.
On Aug. 24, the judge deferred the hearing date to Aug. 29 after police cited tension in the wake of the Dera Sacha Sauda case.
"The court has acquitted Rampal in both the cases," said Rampal's counsel A.P. Singh while talking to reporters in Hisar Aug. 29.
A case was registered against Rampal and his followers Nov. 17, 2014, under sections 186, obstructing a public servant in discharge of public function; 332, voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from his duty; and 353, assault or use of criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty, of the Indian Penal Code.
Another case was registered against Rampal, his followers Purshotam Dass, Raj Kumar, Mohinder Singh, Rajender Singh, Rahul and between 30 to 40 others Nov. 18, 2014 on a complaint from Sukhdev Singh of Ratia, Fatehabad, for rioting, unlawful assembly, disobedience to an order lawfully promulgated by a public servant and wrongfully confining a person.
Rampal was arrested after a tense standoff between his supporters and police after close to 15,000 of his followers were evacuated from the sprawling ashram premises in 2014.
The standoff turned violent, resulting in five deaths.
Rampal had further resisted arrest, which had been ordered by the Punjab and Haryana court. He refused to appear in the High Court to reply to charges, including contempt of court, and was holed up inside his ashram in Barwala, Hisar.
Rampal will remain in jail while he faces other charges, including sedition, the defense counsel said.
