Meditation – Zen Habits

Posted: December 30, 2018 at 12:51 am

By Leo Babauta

The most important habit Ive formed in the last 10 years of forming habits is meditation. Hands down, bar none.

Meditation has helped me to form all my other habits, its helped me to become more peaceful, more focused, less worried about discomfort, more appreciative and attentive to everything in my life. Im far from perfect, but it has helped me come a long way.

Probably most importantly, it has helped me understand my own mind. Before I started meditating, I never thought about what was going on inside my head it would just happen, and I would follow its commands like an automaton. These days, all of that still happens, but more and more, I am aware of whats going on. I can make a choice about whether to follow the commands. I understand myself better (not completely, but better), and that has given me increased flexibility and freedom.

So I highly recommend this habit. And while Im not saying its easy, you can start small and get better and better as you practice. Dont expect to be good at first thats why its called practice!

These tips arent aimed at helping you to become an expert they should help you get started and keep going. You dont have to implement them all at once try a few, come back to this article, try one or two more.

Meditation isnt always easy or even peaceful. But it has truly amazing benefits, and you can start today, and continue for the rest of your life.

If youd like help with mindfulness, check out my new Zen Habits Beginners Guide to Mindfulness short ebook.

The Personal Performance Review Template (And Why You Need …

Posted: December 29, 2018 at 8:43 am

Performance measures, in my opinion should fall into one of the following three categories:

Performance Metrics. These are extremely important and you should make sure to propose some concrete metrics if you dont have them already. Dont wait for your boss to tell you what they are put something out there and force her to have a dialogue with you about them. In a standard 4 measure template, I like to have two performance metrics. In the example I used for a marketing manager, I chose Leads and Web Site Visits. These are specific, finite measures that leave no room for ambiguity when the annual review comes around. Either you hit them or you dont. It will be clear to everyone. Thats the position you want to be in.

Major Deliverables. Most jobs have a few performance metrics and a few major deliverables that define success and failure. In the case of the marketing manager example template, there is a market report that needs to be delivered. Select the most important deliverable for you (not all of them) and include it in your personal performance review template.

Learning Goals. Most people ignore learning goals when it comes to tracking performance. That is a mistake. You need to get your boss invested in your development and to think of your learning objectives as determining factors in your success and value. Most people are too passive about this. They sit back and wait for their boss or the company to provide them professional development opportunities. Dont wait. You are responsible for your own development and any reasonable manager is going to support you if you propose it constructively. Use your 1-1 meetings to talk to your boss about what your personal learning goals should be. In the marketing example Ive used, the person has decided to focus learning on the topic of inbound marketing. She has agreed with her boss that she should complete an online course this quarter to meet that goal. My recommendation within the standard four measure template, is to have one learning goal to track on a weekly basis with your boss. Once you have your performance measures in place, you update the template before each weekly 1-1 meeting with your manager.

A quick aside... If you dont have regular weekly 1-1 meetings with your direct manager, you should request them. Even if you sit beside your manager and you feel totally in sync, the 1-1 meeting is critical to optimize your performance. Its a meeting specifically designed to keep you on track with your goals and to ensure youre getting the support you need.

Prior to each weekly 1-1 meeting, I enter a few bullets for each performance measure to update my boss on the progress I made the previous week. I try to keep it concise and at an executive summary level. Only the most important things should go here. Frankly the template isnt big enough to fit more than the most important pieces of information. Keep your bullets focused on things that have been completed or delivered. This is not a template for you to describe the things youre working on or the activities in process. What tangible progress has been made to advance the performance measure in the previous week? If you find you often dont have tangible progress to report for a particular performance measure then you are almost certainly not focusing enough time on it or youve aligned to the wrong success measure with your boss. Check out the book The One Thing for excellent advice on prioritization and time allocation.

Once youve added a few bullets to record progress, you can add a few bullets to identify any help you need to make further progress in the week to come. Resources, reviews, approvals this is a great place to get the limited time and attention of your boss directed on these issues.

If youve ever sat across from your manager and listened to her tell you why your performance is not meeting her expectation, you know just how painful it can be. Especially if you believed you were doing well. Use the personal performance review template as the framework for your 1-1 meetings to take control over your own performance and ensure that never happens to you again. The performance review template focuses the dialogue with your boss on the most important factors for your success. It bypasses minutia and other distractions and guarantees you are aligned on achieving what is most important.

Osho | Enlightened Beings

Posted: December 26, 2018 at 8:46 pm

The Worlds Most Radical SpirituallyIncorrect Enlightened Master

Osho (Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh) is an enlightened mystic from India whose profound wisdom has impacted millions of people all around the world. Osho is the most prolific author on this planet with over 650 books (64 million words) in print!

Osho left his body in 1990, yet the number of listeners, and devotees he has acquired has been growing exponentially. The reason is his wisdom takes you beyond time and causation, in the enlightened world that is beyond the mind.

Osho is a true light and inspiration for any radical seeker in the world today. His main teaching is about freedom, love, enlightenment, and how to heal our lives from the inside out.

Listen to Osho speak on enlightenment below

Osho On Melting Ego

Osho On Enlightenment

Osho On Perfectionism

Osho Enlightening Quote

Osho Alpha and Omega

Osho on Samadhi

You can download and read any of his ebooks or order a hardcopy too! Do this and I guarantee your mind will open, perhaps more than it ever has been. You will start to become a whole human being again. The reason why is because youre connecting to his consciousness which is at home, unified with the Divine Source. Osho is an enlightened being, an awakened master who has helped millions of people find their spiritual path to freedom.

The new man that Osho speaks about is one who is an authentic human being. Who is blend of a Zorba the Greek and Siddartha the Buddha. Someone who can let their hair down and dance in the moonlight while peacefully watching the swans sitting on the lake.

Osho is perhaps one of the most radical and rebellious beings who has ever walked this planet. The more books you read of his, the easier it is to understand why. He celebrates life so deeply and passionately that he creates an even deeper sensitivity to it, making life more and more orgasmic to enjoy!

My other favorite spiritual books

My message is simple. My message is a new man, homo novus. The old concept of man was of either/or; materialist or spiritualist, moral or immoral, sinner or saint. It was based on division, split. It created a schizophrenic humanity. The whole past of humanity has been sick, unhealthy, insane. In three thousand years, five thousand wars have been fought. This is just utterly mad; it is unbelievable. It is stupid, unintelligent, inhuman.

Once you divide man in two, you create misery and hell for him. He can never be healthy and can never be whole, the other half that has been denied will go on taking revenge. It will go on finding ways and means to overcome the part that you have imposed upon yourself. You will become a battle-ground, a civil war. Thats what has been the case in the past.

In the past we were not able to create real human beings, but humanoids. A humanoid is one who looks like a human being but is utterly crippled, paralyzed. He has not been allowed to bloom in his totality. He is half, and because he is half he is always in anguish and tension; he cannot celebrate. Only a whole man can celebrate. Celebration is the fragrance of being whole. Only a tree that has lived wholly will flower. Man has not flowered yet.

The past has been very dark and dismal. It has been a dark night of the soul. And because it was repressive, it was bound to become aggressive. If something is repressed, man becomes aggressive, he loses all soft qualities. It was always so up to now. We have come to a point where the old has to be dropped and the new has to be heralded.

The new man will not be either/or; he will be both/and. The new man will be earthy and divine, worldly and other-worldly. The new man will accept his totality and he will live it without any inner division, he will not be split. His god will not be opposed to the devil, his morality will not be opposed to immorality; he will know no opposition. He will transcend duality, he will not be schizophrenic. With the new man there will come a new world, because the new man will perceive in a qualitatively different way and he will live a totally different life which has not been lived yet. He will be a mystic, a poet, a scientist, all together. He will not choose: he will be choicelessly himself. ~Osho (Zorba The Buddha, 1979)

The mind can accept any boundary anywhere. But the reality is that, by its very nature, existence cannot have any boundary, because what will be beyond the boundary again another sky. Thats why Im saying skies upon skies are available for your flight. Dont be content easily. Those who remain content easily remain small: small are their joys, small are their ecstasies, small are their silences, small is their being. But there is no need! This smallness is your own imposition upon your freedom, upon your unlimited possibilities, upon your unlimited potential. ~Osho

By Osho

Try this amazing meditation for JUST a few minutes. It can transform all the pain in your entire life!

When you breathe in, imagine that you are breathing in all the darkness and negativity in your life. Welcome it into your heart. Stop trying to resist it, avoid it or destroy it. That has been taking up all of your energy. As you are breathing in this heaviness, let it be absorbed into your heart before you exhale. And then the moment you breathe out, breathe out golden light. Breathe out your greatest lightness, your highest joy, love and blessing from your heart INTO the source of the negativity. Youll soon transform all the darkness in your life with your breath.

Breathe out all the love that you have, all the blissfulness that you have, all the benediction that you have. When breathing out, pour your love into existence. This is the method of compassion: drink in all the suffering and pour out all the blessings. And you will be surprised what happens when you really do it. The moment you stop resisting all the darkness and heaviness in your inner world, they are no longer sufferings.

The heart has the power to transform any energy to light. The heart is a transforming force, the essential alchemist. It can drink in any misery, pain or sadness and transform it into a lightness. Trust the power of your heart. Once you have learned that your heart can do this magic, this miracle, then keep practicing it again and again.

Experiment with this exercise and let yourself explore every dark area of your life. If you feel overwhelmed, dont give up. It it often the coldest and darkest just before dawn. Just let yourself fully FEEL that which you cannot feel, what youve been resisting. Only then will you have mastered yourself. Continue doing this beautiful method of transforming pain into compassion for 30 days. Youll get better at it and be able to welcome in all the heaviness of the world and pour out such a great love and light that our entire planet is transformed. You have the power within you to do miracles, use it! Youll see how amazingly bright brilliant and alive you will feel!

1) Experience life in all possible ways good-bad, bitter-sweet, dark-light, summer-winter. Experience all the dualities. Dont be afraid of experience, because the more experience you have, the more mature you become.

2) Ecstasy is our very nature; not to be ecstatic is simply unnecessary. To be ecstatic is natural, spontaneous. It needs no effort to be ecstatic, it needs great effort to be miserable. Thats why you look to tired, because misery is really hard work; to maintain it is really difficult, because you are doing something against nature.

3) Remain in wonder if you want the mysteries to open up for you. Mysteries never open up for those who go on questioning. Questioners sooner or later end up in a library. Questioners sooner or later end up with scriptures, because scriptures are full of answers. And answers are dangerous, they kill your wonder.

4) All the Buddhas of all the ages have been telling you a very simple fact: Be dont try to become. Within these two words, be and becoming, your whole life is contained. Being is enlightenment, becoming is ignorance.

6) Truth cannot be defined, although it can certainly be experienced. But experience is not a definition. A definition is made by the mind, experience comes through participating. If somebody asks, What is a dance? how can you define it? But you can dance and you can know the inner feel of it. God is the ultimate dance.

7) To be creative means to be in love with life. You can be creative only if you love life enough that you want to enhance its beauty, you want to bring a little more music to it, a little more poetry to it, a little more dance to it.

8) No dead principles can help, but only living consciousness. Be absolutely unprincipled and just follow life.

9) You can go on changing the outer for lives and you will never be satisfied; something or other will remain to be changed. Unless the inner changes, the outer can never be perfect.

10) Any human being who is becoming independent of conditionings, of religions, scriptures, prophets and messiahs, has arrived home. He has found the treasure which was hidden in his own being.

11) To be alone in the only real revolution. To accept that you are alone is the greatest transformation that can happen to you.

12) Falling in love you remain a child; rising in love you mature. By and by love becomes not a relationship, it becomes a state of your being. Not that you are in love now you are love.

13) Become more and more innocent, less knowledgeable and more childlike. Take life as fun because thats precisely what it is!

14) If you take the responsibility for your life you can start changing it. Slow will be the change, only in the course of time will you start; moving into the world of light and crystallization, but once you are crystallized you will know what real revolution is. Then share your revolution with others; it has to go that way, from heart to heart.

15) Intelligence is a natural phenomenon just as breathing is, just as seeing is. Intelligence is the inner seeing; it is intuitive. It has nothing to do with intellect. Never confuse intellect with intelligence, they are polar opposites. Intellect is of the head; it is taught by others, it is imposed on you. You have to cultivate it. It is borrowed, it is something foreign, it is not inborn. But intelligence is inborn. It is your very being, your very nature.

16) Drop the fear. Fear was taken up by you in your childhood, unconsciously. Now consciously drop it and be mature. Then the life can be a light which goes on deepening as you go on growing.

17) Know the whole world is nothing when it is compared to knowing your own inner mystery of life.

18) Seriousness is a sickness; your sense of humor makes you more human, more humble. The sense of humor according to me is one of the most essential parts of religiousness.

19) Misery nourishes your ego thats why you see so many miserable people in the world. The basic, central point is the ego.

20) The beauty of facing life unprepared is tremendous. Then life has a newness, a youth; then life has a flow and freshness. Then life has so many surprises. And when life has so many surprises boredom never settles in you.

21) What is needed is not something in which you can forget your loneliness; what is needed is that you become aware of your aloneness which is a reality. And it is so beautiful to experience it, to feel it, because it is your freedom from the crowd, from the other. It is your freedom from the fear of being lonely.

22) Man has lost one quality, the quality of zestfulness. And without zest, what is life? Just waiting for death? It cant be anything else. Only with zest do you live; otherwise you vegetate.

23) The perfectionist is bound to be a neurotic, he cannot enjoy life, until he is perfect. And perfection as such never happens, it is not in the nature of things. Totality is possible, perfection is not possible.

24) Your innermost core has always been pure. Purity is intrinsic to you, it cannot be taken away. Your virginity is eternal. You cannot lose it, there is no way to lose it. You can only forget about it or you can remember it. If you forget about it, you live in confusion. If you remember about it, all is clear.

25) In this world the greatest courage is to drop the mind aside. The bravest man is who can see the world without the barrier of the mind, just as it is. It is tremendously different, utterly beautiful. There is nobody who is inferior and there is nobody who is superior there are no distinctions.

26) The mind exists in time, in fact the mind is time; it exists in the past and the future. And remember, time consists of only two tenses, the past and the future. The present is not part of time, the present is part of eternity.

27) Mind is repetitive, mind always moves in circles. Mind is a mechanism: you feed it with knowledge, it repeats the same knowledge, it goes on chewing the same knowledge again and again. No-mind is clarity, purity, innocence. No-mind is the real way to live, the real way to know, the real way to be.

28) Millions of people are suffering: they want to be loved but they dont know how to love. And love cannot exist as a monologue; it is a dialogue, a very harmonious dialogue.

29) There is no evil and there are no evil forces in the world. There are only people of awareness, and there are people who are fast asleep and sleep has no force. The whole energy is in the hands of the awakened people. And one awakened person can awaken the whole world. One lighted candle can make millions of candles lighted without losing its light.

30) The heart is always right if theres a question of choosing between the mind and the heart because mind is a creation of the society. It has been educated. You have been given it by the society, not by existence. The heart is unpolluted.

31) The truth is only a way of speaking; there is not something labeled Truth, that one day you will find and open the box and see the contents and say, Great! I have found the truth. There is no such box. Your existence is the truth, and when you are silent you are in truth. And if the silence is absolute then you are the ultimate truth. But dont think of the truth as an object it is not an object. It is not there, it is here.

32) Mind functions in either/or way: either this can be right or its opposite can be right. Both together cannot be right as far as mind, its logic, its rationality is concerned. If mind is either/or then the heart is both/and. The heart has no logic, but a sensitivity, a perceptivity. It can see that they both can not only be together, in fact they are not two. It is just one phenomenon seen from two different aspects.

33) The heart knows nothing of the past, nothing of the future; it knows only of the present. The heart has no time concept.

34) If the whole existence is one, and if the existence goes on taking care of trees, of animals, of mountains, of oceans from the smallest blade of grass to the biggest star then it will take care of you too. Why be possessive? The possessiveness shows simply one thing that you cannot trust existence. You have to arrange separate security for yourself, safety for yourself; you cannot trust existence. Non-possessiveness is basically trust in existence. There is no need to possess, because the whole is already ours.

35) Drop guilt! because to be guilty is to live in hell. Not being guilty, you will have the freshness of dewdrops in the early morning sun, you will have the freshness of lotus petals in the lake, you will have the freshness of the stars in the night. Once guilt disappears you will have a totally different kind of life, luminous and radiant. You will have a dance to your feet and your heart will be singing a thousand and one songs.

36) If the mind wants to comprehend reality, it will have to come out of the past and the future. But coming out of the past and the future, it is no longer the mind at all. Hence the insistence of all the great masters of the world that the door to reality is no-mind.

37) Existence is not a problem to be solved, it is a mystery to be lived. And you should be perfectly aware what the difference is between a mystery and a problem. A problem is something created by the mind; a mystery is something which is there, not created by the mind. A problem has an ugliness in it, like disease. A mystery is beautiful. With a problem, immediately a fight arises. You have to solve it; something is wrong, you have to put it right; something is missing, you have to supply the missing link. With a mystery there is no question like that. The moon arises in the night. It is not a problem, it is a mystery. You have to live with it. You have to dance with it. You have to sing with it, or you can be just silent with it. Something mysterious surrounds you.

38) Be less of a judge and you will be surprised that when you become a witness and you dont judge yourself, you stop judging others too. And that makes you more human, more compassionate, more understanding.

39) Looking at a sunset, just for a second you forget your separateness: you are the sunset. That is the moment when you feel the beauty of it. But the moment you say that it is a beautiful sunset, you are no longer feeling it; you have come back to your separate, enclosed entity of the ego. Now the mind is speaking. And this is one of the mysteries, that the mind can speak, and knows nothing; and the heart knows everything, and cannot speak. Perhaps to know too much makes it difficult to speak; the mind knows so little, it is possible for it to speak.

40) The witnessing soul is like the sky. The birds fly in the sky but they dont leave any footprints. line Thats what Buddha says, that the man who is awakened lives in such a way that he leaves no footprints. He is without wounds and without scars; he never looks back there is no point. He has lived that moment so totally that what is the need to look back again and again? He never looks ahead, he never looks back, he lives in the moment.

41) All beings are from the very beginning Buddhas. It is like water and ice: Apart from water, no ice, outside living beings, no Buddhas. Not knowing it is near they seek it afar, what a pity!

42) You are a Buddha. But remember you are not a Buddha in any special sense. Everybody is So dont take it in an egoistic sense that I am a Buddha. Dont make it ambitious, dont go on an ambition trip. All is Buddha. Life is Buddha, being is Buddha-hood, existence is Buddha-hood.

43) All that you need is just to be silent and listen to existence. There is no need of any religion, there is no need of any God, there is no need of any priesthood, there is no need of any organization.

44) The whole world is a cyclone. But once you have found the center the cyclone disappears. This nothingness is the ultimate peak of consciousness.

45) All that this world needs is a good cleansing of the heart of all the inhibitions of the past. And laughter and tears can do both. Tears will take out all the agony that is hidden inside you and laughter will take all that is preventing your ecstasy. Once you have learned the art you will be immensely surprised.

46) Life is not a tragedy, it is a comedy. To be alive means to have a sense of humor.

47) If you are absolutely without mind, just pure consciousness, time stops completely, disappears, leaving no trace behind.

48) Unless you become a buddha you have not lived at all because you will not know the great poetry of life, the great music of existence. You will not know the celestial celebration that goes on and on, you will not know the dance of the stars. This bliss is for you! All these flowers and all these songs and all these stars are for you. You are entitled to miracles.

49) The day on which we come to know the supreme consciousness within us, then the outside world will also appear to us like the expanse of the supreme consciousness. The whole will be a mirror to us when we become a mirror within. If we stand near a stone, then we will be able to see ourselves even in the stone. Then we will not look at the stone with that hardness with which we look at man now. Then we shall touch a stone as if we are touching our beloved, because the stone is not stone, then it is God.

50) When you love, you have to become nobody. If you remain somebody, then love never happens. When you love a personeven for a single moment love happens and flows between two personsthere are two nothingnesses, not two persons. If you have ever had any experience of love, you can understand. Two lovers sitting by each others side, or two nothingnesses sitting togetheronly then the meeting is possible because barriers are broken, boundaries thrown away. The energy can move from here to there; there is no hindrance. And only in such a moment of deep love is orgasm possible.

At age 87and having logged more than 38,000 miles running, Kenneth H. Cooper, MD, MPH, sets an example for maintaining a healthy lifestyle by exercising at Cooper Aerobics Center on a regular basis, along with his wife, Millie, daughter, Berkley, son, Tyler, and their families. Dr. Cooper serves as Chairman of seven health and wellness companies and The Cooper Institute 501(c)(3).

For 50 years, Dr. Cooper has inspired millions to exercise for good health beginning with the release of his first best-seller, Aerobics. Today Dr. Cooper is revolutionizing health and fitness againcalling on America and the world to Get Cooperized. As a leading pioneer of preventive medicine, Dr. Cooper challenges everyone to follow these 8 Healthy Steps to live better both sooner and later: maintain a healthy weight; make healthy food choices most of the time; exercise most days of the week; take the right supplements for you; do not use tobacco; control alcohol; manage stress; and get a regular, comprehensive physical exam.

A grandfather of five, Dr. Cooper is passionately involved in the fight against childhood obesity. In Texas, Dr. Cooper was instrumental in getting physical education back in schools through the passage of Senate Bill 530 that requires enhanced PE activity levels and annual physical fitness testing using FitnessGram. Since then, The Cooper Institute has partnered with NFL to bring FitnessGram to more than 1,000 schools nationwide. Reaching across the globe, The Cooper Institute partnered with the Hungarian School Sport Federation to establish a national youth fitness assessment in Hungary. As a result, jogging is translated as coopering in Portuguese. Dr. Coopers mark has also positively impacted the American diet. His collaboration with PepsiCo to eliminate trans fats from its Frito-Lay snack line started an international wave other companies have followed.

During his 13 years of service in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force, Dr. Cooper served as a flight surgeon and director of the Aerospace Medical Laboratory. He developed the 12-minute and 1.5-mile fitness tests and the Aerobics Point System, used today by branches of the military, schools and organizations worldwide.

In 1970 Dr. Cooper resigned from the military and founded Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas with the mission to explore the relationship between cardiovascular fitness and health and longevity. With the popularity of Aerobics, which has been translated into 41 languages and Braille, he also coined "aerobics" and submitted the official definition to the Oxford English Dictionary. Dr. Cooper has authored 18 additional books, which combined have sold more than 30 million copies.

Want to be at the head of the class? Fitness trainers and aerobics instructors are leaders of all their classes, leading exercise groups at health clubs, exercise studios, and other facilities. They demonstrate correct exercise form and the proper use of equipment. These teachers also instruct students on weight training, flexibility, aerobics, and other workout styles, often developing programs for people with special needs or goals. Aerobics instructors plan routines that work different sets of muscles and combine a high-energy sweat session with music. The job may require maintaining equipment and keeping records, as well as promoting membership and enrollment in a gym or health club. Good communication skills and an approachable manner are essential; some positions may require expertise in weight control and nutrition. Running several classes a day requires stamina and energy, so it's expected that you be in good physical condition. Many instructors work in the field part-time. Instructors often enter the field with experience in fitness classes, dance, or other sports disciplines. 4 Best Investments To Make In 2018 – forbes.com

Posted: December 25, 2018 at 2:42 am

Its the dawning of a new year and you finally have some money to invest. Perhaps you just got a raise. Or, maybe an end-of-year bonus is burning a hole in your pocket. Either way, you need to be smart about investing if you want those extra dollars to count.

The problem is, you have no clue where to invest your cash. While youre aware of the myriad investing options available, the sheer number of possibilities is overwhelming.

In the investing world, this is called paralysis by analysis. You spend so much time analyzing your options that you wind up putting it off and never investing at all. And eventually, the extra cash you set aside gets consumed by bills or unexpected expenses. In other words, life happens.

If you want to make sure your extra cash doesnt disappear, you need to invest it right away. A certain amount of analysis is fine if it helps you find the right investment options for your goals, but you still need to act fast.

With that in mind, I wanted to share what I believe are the four best ways to invest your excess funds in 2018.

While invest in the stock market is some of the most basic advice youll ever read, please hear me out on this one. While everyone knows that investing in the stock market has historically paid off, there are far too many people who dont trust the financial markets and choose to sit on the sidelines altogether.

Then there are people who think the stock market is so overvalued right now that they would be crazy to jump in. But, heres the thing: Instead, Im suggesting you invest small sums of money over time using a method called dollar cost averaging.

Dollar cost averaging requires us to trickle our money into investments over any length of time. It could be 12 months. It would be 18 months. Heck, it could be five years.

Colorado financial advisor David Henderson of Jenkins Wealth goes further to explain how dollar cost averaging works: When the market is high, you buy fewer shares and when the market is low you buy more shares, he says. This means that, over time, you will have a lower average share price using this method. Obviously, its easy to see why this would be beneficial.

Now that weve talked about the importance of investing in the stock market, lets talk about exactly where to invest your money. What are the best tools and vehicles we can use?

This is yet another situation where the options are overwhelming. Still, I typically suggest people get their feet wet with mutual funds or ETFs.

If you have a financial advisor working on your behalf, they may be able to weed out the well-performing actively managed mutual funds from the ones that arent doing so great. Otherwise, you can invest in index funds, which are not actively managed but have a long history of solid returns.

If you have a brokerage account already, then you may want to stick with it. Otherwise, youll need to find a new place to help you invest your funds. One company I always suggest is Betterment. With Betterment, your money can be invested in ETFs and they dont charge a fee for managing these for you. Plus, they actually pick the ETFs you invest in based on your appetite for risk, investing goals, and other factors.

What does that mean? That means that you can invest your hard-earned money, then sit back and enjoy the returns and let them do the hard work.

If you want to have more control on your investments, online brokerage firms like Ally Financial, TD Ameritrade and E-Trade make it easy to stay in charge with low fees and easy-to-use platforms. Plus, there are a multitude of other "robo-advisors" to choose from.

As a final note, theres one more simple way to invest in the stock market with even less effort boosting how much you contribute to your work-sponsored retirement account. Arizona financial planner Charles C. Scott says this may be your best option yet especially if youre not contributing enough to get a match from your employer.

Every dollar you contribute could get a dollar match, says Scott. Thats a 100% return on your investment.

If youre not making the most of your 401(k) or contributing enough to get a match, then youre probably best starting there.

A second place to stash some of your excess cash this year is in peer-to-peer lending platforms like Lending Club and Prosper. With these companies, youre able to loan money to individuals in small increments as if you were the bank. The best part is, you get to earn a pretty decent rate of return usually upward of 6% or more.

As an investor in peer-to-peer lending, youre investing in other people and their goals. It's comforting knowing you arent lending people you dont know large sums of money. Instead, the money you invest is split up into increments as small as $25 over hundreds or even thousands of loans.

While it may seem strange to hear a financial advisor suggest people invest in peer-to-peer lending, Im not the only one who sees the value in these platforms. Kansas City Financial Advisor Clint Haynes told me he supports peer-to-peer lending as an alternative to the stock market for a few reasons. First, these companies make it easy to sign up and get started. Second, your rate of return can range from 5 7 percent for safer loans and even more for riskier loans. Last but not least, you can typically open a new account with as little as $1,000.

In addition to the stock market and peer-to-peer lending websites, a third investment strategy to consider this year is real estate. The thing is, Im not suggesting everyone run out and buy an investment property. After all, not everyone is cut out to be a landlord.

Im certainly not. I tried investing in physical real estate seven years ago and almost lost my shirt. I learned a lot of lessons from my foray into becoming a landlord, the biggest of which was that I dont need that kind of stress in my life.

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to invest in real estate without dealing with a physical property. One option to consider is investing in real estate notes. I got started investing into real estate notes because a really good friend of mine was crushing it with real estate and offering his friends the chance to invest.

He would buy a pool of real estate properties, and then investors like myself would invest money into his project. From there, he would manage the properties and pay me a dividend or interest off that money. For me, this has been an attractive way to invest money without having to be a landlord or deal with tenants.

Obviously, there is a ton of risk in a situation like this. You have to have a lot of trust to invest in real estate notes offered by an individual.

The good news is, there are other ways to invest in real estate outside of real estate notes. One option Im really excited about is a company called Fundrise. Fundrise offers an investing scenario similar to the one above. They buy commercial properties and allow investors to invest small sums of money. Obviously, this is yet another hands-off investment. You may own part of a commercial real estate project, but you dont even see or deal with the property itself.

Like Lending Club, Fundrise requires an upfront sum of around $1,000 to get started. Once you invest, however, Fundrise mostly lets you set it and forget it. Even better, you may receive a pretty hefty rate of return through this platform. On the company website, Fundrise claims its returns have averaged between 8.76% up to 12.42% over the last five years. Not too shabby.

Obviously, there is risk investing in a platform like this one, too. First off, the company is newer so it doesnt have decades of data to share. Second, youre letting a third party choose buildings and investments on your behalf, which means youve given up all control.

Regardless, I think its pretty cool that technology has allowed investors to get access to commercial properties in a way we havent been able to in the past.

This last investment option might sound cheesy, but its one of the best investments anyone can make.

Believe it or not, there are a ton of ways to invest in yourself that dont cost a ton of cash at all. One of the best ways to improve yourself could even be free if you have a library.

Thats right; read a ton of books! But, how many should you read? Minneapolis Financial Planner Morgan Ranstrom says that reading three to five books on successful personal finance strategies or leadership skills will absolutely make you smarter over the course of a few months.

If you have more time, you could read even more than that. If youre not sure what to read, you could even consider signing up for Leaderbox a monthly subscription service that includes books and leadership strategies curated by thought leader Michael Hyatt.

It's been stated that CEOs of major corporations read 60 books per year on average. These guys and gals are managing businesses worth millions or billions, and they can still read 60 books a year. Imagine how busy they are. Now, ask yourself how busy you are.

If you dedicate yourself to reading just one book a month 12 books per year I promise you will be amazed at the results.

Of course, reading isnt the only way to invest in yourself. Another investment you can make into yourself is in courses or investing into material that you can learn from other people. Trust me; everyone has something to learn.

Personally, I have found a lot of success via learning from others in my niche. Recently, I even paid $3,500 for a course on how to launch a successful YouTube channel. That might sound crazy to some people, but I have made investment back and then some already.

A third way you can invest into yourself is through personal coaching. I've done a few different ways. I went to a business and entrepreneurship coach for five years and spent a ton of cash that I could barely justify. The thing is, this investment paid off in spades even though it was expensive.

Youcan also hire a personal coach to help you with whatever your goals are. There are career coaches. There are business coaches. There are fitness coaches. There are life coaches.

While coaching is expensive, its amazing what you can accomplish when you have someone to be accountable to.

Last but not least, dont discount the idea of going back to school. Brian Behl, a Wealth Advisor with Bronfman Rothschild tells me he feels too many people overlook this option when it might be their ticket to long-term wealth.

Lets say you could spend $10,000 on a designation or advanced degree but it increases your annual income by $10,000 or more. Thats an incredible rate of return, says Behl, but it becomes an even better investment when you consider how much more youll earn over 20 or 30 working years.

While it would be great to invest these funds in your portfolio, there is no investment which is likely to pay off in this way, says Behl.

And if you think youre too busy to go back to college, dont forget about online degrees says, Orange County financial advisor Anthony Montenegro of The Blackmont Group.

Many of the countrys top-ranked schools also accommodate the busy professional by offering certificate and degree completion programs online, he says. If youre interested in becoming more marketable to your current employer or want to explore opportunities with a competing company, consider carving out time to study for a graduate degree or specialized designation for your industry.

Investing in yourself might sound clich, and it is, but its a bet that could absolutely pay off. And if you want to make the most of your investments this year, betting on yourself is one of thesmartest moves you can make.

Investment Calculator

What do Aggressive and Conservative mean?

The Investment Calculator uses two investment strategies that typically produce two different retirement scenarios. Aggressive investing indicates a higher financial risk with a higher potential reward, while conservative investing offers a lower financial risk with a more moderate potential reward.

Aggressive investing typically means that you will invest in more stocks than in bonds. This type of investment strategy is smart when you have a longer amount of time before your retirement. A longer amount of time can also, in theory, withstand all the volatility of the stock market. The other good news is that more time passing will compound your interest, resulting in significantly larger retirement savings.

Conservative investing is a more balanced strategy in which you invest in stocks as well as bonds. The return, or the amount that your money grows, is not as large as it can be when aggressively investing but the risk is lower. Conservative investing is best when your retirement date is nearby. Vanguard published a great article about these types of scenarios, showing the historic risks and rewardsin quantitative form. These table graphs will show the differentstrategies in terms of being growth or balanced oriented anddisplays the assumptions behind each retirement strategy.

The retirement calculator takes the Total retirement savings and calculates how much monthly income a 4% annuity would generate without drawing from the principal. This indicates the type of lifestyle you can expect without running out of money.

Inflation is inevitable. If that word is new to you, it simply determines how much purchasing power of your dollar. Historically, inflation has always increased with time. The average inflation is currently 3.22%.

These recommendations are correlated to a comfortable lifestyle. Comfortable lifestyle is a subjective term used to describe retirement savings that lets you be mostly free from financial restrictions or fears. A recommendation helps you know what your monthly investment and initial investment should be in order to achieve a comfortable retirement lifestyle.

The investment calculator uses three lifestyle terms to depict retirement scenarios: Frugal, Content, and Comfortable. Frugal describes a lifestyle where you will have to carefully monitor your spending to make sure your savings will last. A comfortable lifestyle describes a scenario where you can spend librally and enjoy retirement. Content is somewhere in the middle where you are able to enjoy retirement but still monitor your spending.

No, Social Security is not included in this retirement calculation. The investment calculator leaves out Social Security because it tends to vary too greatly from person to person. Social Security also varies depending on the age that you decide to collect. If you collect at age 62, you will receive 25% less. If you collect at 70, you can collect a check for 32% larger.

Social Security is important in calculating your retirement savings. It can impact your monthly retirement income greatly. The average monthly retirement benefit was $2,687 in 2017, or $32,000 for the whole year. The goal of this calculator is to help you define helpful strategies but not to give individualized investment advice.

Investment Calculator provides a generalized overview of your retirement situation, but it is not intended to replace a financial advisor. Our goal is to help you get a better understanding of your financial outlook and inspire you to save / invest more.
