Alan Watts quotes that will change your perspective on life …

Posted: March 19, 2019 at 2:41 am

To this day, Alan Watts's impactful and wise words circulate through the culture. We find them in the many books he left behind, countless lectures and pop-culture references galore. Renowned scholar and teacher, Joseph Campbell once said of him:

"The pomposities of prodigious learning could be undone by him with a turn of phrase. One stood before him, disarmed and laughed at what had just been oneself."

While it is no easy feat to distill the many whimsical phrases and knowledge Watts left behind, these quotes attempt to paint a broad picture of the Eastern scholar and philosopher-entertainer.

Here are some of the best Alan Watts quotes.

What is Zen? Better to ask what isn't Zen. Watts was one of a kind when it came to articulating what cannot be said. The ineffable comes down to an Earthly speakable form when Watts wanted to probe into the peculiarities of paradox.

"Zen does not confuse spirituality with thinking about God while one is peeling potatoes. Zen spirituality is just to peel the potatoes."

"I prefer not to translate the word Tao at all because to us Tao is a sort of nonsense syllable, indicating the mystery that we can never understand the unity that underlies the opposites."

"A proper exposition of Zen should tease us out of thought, and leave the mind like an open window instead of a panel of stained glass."

Having obtained both a master's degree in theology and becoming an Episcopal priest, Watts had a thoroughly rounded Christian education on the concept of God. With his boundless knowledge of Eastern traditions, mysticism and ancient history Watts had a refreshingly comparative and unique take on the word and concept.

"So in this idea, then, everybody is fundamentally the ultimate reality. Not God in a politically kingly sense, but God in the sense of being the self, the deep-down basic whatever there is. And you're all that, only you're pretending you're not. And it's perfectly O.K. to pretend you're not, to be perfectly convinced, because this is the whole notion of drama."

"How is it possible that a being with such sensitive jewels as the eyes, such enchanted musical instruments as the ears, and such fabulous arabesque of nerves as the brain can experience itself anything less than a god."

Watts wasn't afraid to tackle one of the great philosophical questions that has faced all of humankind since time immemorial. He answers it with irreverent wit and a life-affirming answer that'll swing the worst of nihilists among us.

"The physical universe is basically playful. There's no necessity for it whatsoever. It isn't going anywhere; that is to say, it doesn't have a destination that it ought to arrive at. But it is best understood by analogy to music, because music as an art form is essentially playful."

"What happens if you know that there is nothing you can do to be better? It's kind of a relief isn't it? You say 'Well, now what do I do?' When you are freed from being out to improve yourself, your own nature will begin to take over."

Love ranks up there with the other mysteries of life. There are many degrees of love that we float and flounder through each day. Whether it's the whirlwind romantic kind, the love of god, country or self Alan Watts sets the record straight.

"Everyone has love, but it can only come out when he is convinced of the impossibility and the frustration of trying to love himself. This conviction will not come through condemnations, through hating oneself, through calling self love bad names in the universe. It comes only in the awareness that one has no self to love."

"The greater part of human activity is designed to make permanent those experiences and joys which are only lovable because they are changing."

"And so when the essential idea of love is lost there comes talk of fidelity. Actually, the only possible basis for two beings, male and female, to relate to each other is to grant each other total freedom."

Humans are an interesting and humorous species. Watts loved to riff and pick apart the hypocrisy and idiocy endemic to culture and mankind's perception of itself. Whether it was ripping apart the nonsensical education system or ersatz self-help meditation Watts was an expert in the takedown of such mendacity.

"When you tell a girl how beautiful she is, she will say, 'Now isn't that just like a man! All you men think about is bodies. O.K., so I'm beautiful, but I got my body from my parents and it was just luck. I prefer to be admired for myself, not my chassis.' Poor little chauffeur! All she is saying is that she has lost touch with her own astonishing wisdom and ingenuity, and wants to be admired for some trivial tricks that she can perform with her conscious attention. And we are all in the same situation, having dissociated ourselves from our bodies and from the whole network of forces in which bodies can come to birth and live."

"This is not a materialistic civilization at all. It is a civilization devoted to the hatred and destruction of material, its conversion into junk and poison gas. And therefore, one of the most sacred missions to be imposed upon those who would be liberated from this culture is that they shall love material, that they shall love color, that they shall dress beautifully, that they shall cook well, that they shall live in lovely houses, and that they shall preserve the face of nature."

"The word 'person' comes from the latin word 'persona' which referred to the masks worn by actors in which sound would come through. The 'person' is the mask the role you're playing. And all of your friends and relations and teachers are busy telling you who you are and what your role in life is."

Mental state – Wikipedia

Posted: March 17, 2019 at 7:44 pm

A mental state is a state of mind that an agent is in. Most simplistically, a mental state is a mental condition. It is a relation that connects the agent with a proposition. Several of these states are a combination of mental representations and propositional attitudes. There are several paradigmatic states of mind that an agent has: love, hate, pleasure and pain, and attitudes toward propositions such as: believing that, conceiving that, hoping and fearing that, etc.

Discussions about mental states can be found in many areas of study.

In cognitive psychology and the philosophy of mind, a mental state is a kind of hypothetical state that corresponds to thinking and feeling, and consists of a conglomeration of mental representations and propositional attitudes. Several theories in philosophy and psychology try to determine the relationship between the agent's mental state and a proposition.[1][2][3][4]

Instead of looking into what a mental state is, in itself, clinical psychology and psychiatry determine a person's mental health through a mental status examination.[5]

Mental states also include attitudes towards propositions, of which there are at least twofactive, non-factive, both of which entail the mental state of acquaintance. To be acquainted with a proposition is to understand its meaning and be able to entertain it. The proposition can be true or false, and acquaintance requires no specific attitude towards that truth or falsity. Factive attitudes include those mental states that are attached to the truth of the propositioni.e. the proposition entails truth. Some factive mental states include "perceiving that", "remembering that", "regretting that", and (more controversially) "knowing that".[6] Non-factive attitudes do not entail the truth of the propositions to which they are attached. That is, one can be in one of these mental states and the proposition can be false. An example of a non-factive attitude is believingyou can believe a false proposition and you can believe a true proposition. Since you have the possibility of both, such mental states do not entail truth, and therefore, are not factive. However, belief does entail an attitude of assent toward the presumed truth of the proposition (whether or not it's so), making it and other non-factive attitudes different than mere acquaintance.

Vegan vs. Vegetarian: Differences and Similarities

Posted: at 7:42 pm

No doubt, you have heard about vegetarians all your life. And maybe more recently, you've heard more and more about vegans. For some, the term appeared without much explanation. Has the term vegetarian been shortened to vegan? Is vegan a new synonym for vegetarian, or is it something entirely different?

A vegetarian excludes meat, poultry, and seafood from their diet. Some vegetarians also exclude dairy, some don't, and some may consume eggs. Likewise, vegans avoid meat, poultry, and seafood, but they also take it a step further by eliminating all animal products from their diet. This includes any type of animal milk and eggs. Vegans avoid foods produced using animals or animal products in any way, including honey. Many vegans also avoid household products, clothing, or other items made from animal products or tested on animals.

Both vegetarians and vegans have to be sure the complete spectrum of their nutritional needs are met. This means eating a balanced selection of foods to get their daily nutritional requirements of zinc, iron, calcium, and protein. Having a very diverse diet and taking advantage of all the food choices available is a great step in the right direction to getting all the nutrients your body needs. Popular foods among both vegetarians and vegans include kale, grains, nuts, legumes, and beans. Because processed foods are avoided, having vegan diet habits is a great way to get into the kitchen and prepare your own healthy and delicious dishes! Continue to watch the blog because I'll be sharing some of my favorite recipes and recipe resources in coming posts.

Vegans who take nutritional supplements have to be especially aware that just because nutritional supplements are marketed as "natural and healthy" doesn't automatically mean they're truly vegan safe (or even beneficial at all). When investing in vitamins or body cleansing products, make sure you only do business with a reputable company that stands by their products and divulges where and how things were produced. Avoid the slick ads that promise everything and explain nothing. Quality is not an appropriate category to cut corners. Global Healing Center produces and distributes a number of ultra high quality products that are vegan friendly, including VeganZyme and Oxy-powder.

Vitamin B12 is only found in substantial amounts through animal foods. For this reason, several studies have found that vegans and vegetarians have a higher tendency and risk to be B12 deficient. [1] Vitamin B12 is essential for energy metabolism in cells, proper brain function, red blood cell formation, among many other body processes. B12 deficiency can cause anemia, depression, fatigue, and much more. [2] To support the body and overall health, supplement your diet with a quality B12 product. It important not only for vegans and vegetarians but omnivores, too. I recommend VeganSafe B-12, an all-natural, vegan-friendly supplement made with the two most bioactive forms of vitamin B12.

As long as your nutritional requirements are met, adopting a plant-based diet offers you a huge range of health benefits. Your risk of developing many awful health conditions is greatly reduced. Listen, red meat, sugar, processed junk food, all that stuff it's terrible for your health and we all know it. However, the good news is that when you avoid those foods and replace them with whole, natural, organic foods- your heart and cardiovascular system benefit, your brain benefits, all the processes in your body benefit, and YOU benefit by enjoying chronic health robustness instead of chronic health ailments.

Want proof? Short of trying it for yourself, there's a film called Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead that was released a year or two ago, I encourage you to watch it. Some people liked the film, some didn't, but the information and story it shares is interesting. The film followed a 60-day plan of an overweight gentleman who switched from unhealthy food to to an organic fruit and vegetable juice diet. He started overweight and on several medications, he finished 100 pounds lighter and was off all med. It was a radical change in diet that produced radical physical benefits, it could almost be described as an earned miracle. What's stopping you from having one yourself?

If you know someone who is a vegan or vegetarian, you may have noticed that they often seem to have a healthy amount of energy, they rarely get sick, and their overall view of the world is very positive. These are attractive characteristics and naturally pique the interest and curiosity of those who are not yet enjoying the benefits of vegetarian choices. If it's grabbed your attention and you'd like to join in, maybe it's time to start adopting vegan habits in your diet and enjoy better health yourself!

Have you already switched to vegan eating habits and got a tip to share? Please leave a comment!

For example, a traditional lecture style course may require students to do homework online.

Online education is an attractive option for individuals who are self-motivated and can work independently. There is no difference in what you are expected to learn; it is the modality that is different.

Students should enroll in fully online or blended courses only if they are serious about and capable of more independent, computerized learning and timely completion of college-level coursework. In a fully online or blended/hybrid course, students will participate in lessons, complete assignments (e.g., essay exams, research papers, etc.) and take online assessments.

To enroll in an online course, students should have successfully completed any requisite developmental coursework.

Those who are apt to succeed as online learners:

Success in fully online and blended/hybrid courses require a combination of personal motivation, the ability to use computer technology, self-direction in completing coursework on time, and the reading and writing skills to communicate with both the instructor and classmates.

Proceed to "Is Online Learning Right for Me?" to assess your potential for online learning success.

Introduction to Basic Beliefs and Tenets of Buddhism

Posted: at 4:45 pm

Buddhism is a religion based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, who was born in the fifth century B.C. in what is now Nepal and northern India. He came to be called "the Buddha," which means "awakened one," after he experienced a profound realization of the nature of life, death, and existence. In English, the Buddha was said to be enlightened, although in Sanskrit it is "bodhi," or "awakened."

For the rest of his life, the Buddha traveled and taught. However, he didn't teach people what he had realized when he became enlightened. Instead, he taught people how to realize enlightenment for themselves. He taught that awakening comes through your own direct experience, not through beliefs and dogmas.

At the time of his death, Buddhism was a relatively minor sect with little impact in India. But by the third century B.C., the emperor of India made Buddhism the state religion of the country.

Buddhism then spread throughout Asia to become one of the dominant religions of the continent. Estimates of the number of Buddhists in the world today vary widely, in part because many Asians observe more than one religion and in part because it is hard to know how many people are practicing Buddhism in Communist nations like China. The most common estimate is 350 million, which makes Buddhism the fourth largest of the world's religions.

Buddhism is so different from other religions that some people question whether it is a religion at all. For example, the central focus of most religions is one or many. But Buddhism is non-theistic. The Buddha taught that believing in gods was not useful for those seeking to realize enlightenment.

Most religions are defined by their beliefs. But in Buddhism, merely believing in doctrines is beside the point. The Buddha said that doctrines should not be accepted just because they are in scripture or taught by priests.

Instead of teaching doctrines to be memorized and believed, the Buddha taught how to realize truth for yourself. The focus of Buddhism is on practice rather than belief. The major outline of Buddhist practice is the Eightfold Path.

In spite of its emphasis on free inquiry, Buddhism might best be understood as a discipline and an exacting discipline at that. And although Buddhist teachings should not be accepted on blind faith, understanding what the Buddha taught is an important part of that discipline.

By themselves, the truths don't seem like much. But beneath the truths are countless layers of teachings on the nature of existence, the self, life, and death, not to mention suffering. The point is not to just "believe in" the teachings, but to explore them, understand them, and test them against your own experience. It is the process of exploring, understanding, testing, and realizing that defines Buddhism.

About 2,000 years ago Buddhism divided into two major schools: Theravada and Mahayana. For centuries, Theravada has been the dominant form of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Burma, (Myanmar) and Laos. Mahayana is dominant in China, Japan, Taiwan, Tibet, Nepal, Mongolia, Korea, and Vietnam. In recent years, Mahayana also has gained many followers in India. Mahayana is further divided into many sub-schools, such as Pure Land andTheravada Buddhism.

Vajrayana Buddhism, which is chiefly associated with Tibetan Buddhism, is sometimes described as a third major school. However, all schools of Vajrayana are also part of Mahayana.

The two schools differ primarily in their understanding of a doctrine called "anatman" or "anatta." According to this doctrine, there is no "self" in the sense of a permanent, integral, autonomous being within an individual existence. Anatman is a difficult teaching to understand, but understanding it is essential to making sense of Buddhism.

Basically, Theravada considers anatman to mean that an individual's ego or personality is a delusion. Once freed of this delusion, the individual can enjoy the bliss of Nirvana. Mahayana pushes anatman further. In Mahayana, all phenomena are void of intrinsic identity and take identity only in relation to other phenomena. There is neither reality nor unreality, only relativity. The Mahayana teaching is called "shunyata" or "emptiness."

It is said that wisdom and compassion are the two eyes of Buddhism. Wisdom, particularly in Mahayana Buddhism, refers to the realization of anatman or shunyata. There are two words translated as "compassion": "metta and "karuna." Metta is a benevolence toward all beings, without discrimination, that is free of selfish attachment. Karuna refers to active sympathy and gentle affection, a willingness to bear the pain of others, and possibly pity. Those who have perfected these virtues will respond to all circumstances correctly, according to Buddhist doctrine.

There are two things most people think they know about Buddhismthat Buddhists believe in reincarnation and that all Buddhists are vegetarian. These two statements are not true, however. Buddhist teachingson rebirth are considerably different from what most people call "reincarnation." And although vegetarianism is encouraged, in many sects it is considered a personal choice, not a requirement.
