3 smart gyms tested and rated: Peloton, ClassPass and Mirror – CNET

Smart fitness tech bridges the gap between a personal trainer or instructor-led studio exercise classes and winging it on your own with a workout of dumbbells or cardio. Through apps, built-in touchscreen displays, remote classes, free weights and more, you can stay motivated even when you're working out at home.
In my search for the best smart home gym, I specifically tried out ClassPass Live, theMirror, the Peloton Bike and the Peloton Tread, but you can find others with a variety of workout and fitness levels out there now, and plenty more health and fitness products on the way.
All four of the fitness kits I reviewed offer something a bit different, so I've put together descriptions of each one below, including where they excel and where they need some work. Let's get started.
Note that CNET may get a share of revenue from the sale of products featured on this page.

Editor's note, May 22, 2019: ClassPass Live is now only available to ClassPass subscribers and is included with the monthly membership fee.
ClassPass Live costs $79 up front and has a $19 monthly subscription service. For your initial $79, you get aGoogle Chromecastand a WahooTickrheart-rate monitor. ClassPass says you need that specific heart-rate monitor to see your stats on the screen.
Connect the Chromecast to your TV and stream exercise classes from the ClassPass mobile app.

Mirror is, well, a mirror, that doubles as a screen and walks you through workout classes.
The Mirror is a $1,495 full-length mirror. It's also partLCD screen. Pay $39 per month to access live and on-demand fitness classes that play on the mirror while you also watch yourself. Mirror offers classes in different disciplines, and with different workout lengths and fitness levels. It comes with the mirror, a Bluetooth heart-rate monitor and six fitness bands. Each workout is a "body weight" exercise so you don't need additional equipment like dumbbells. It's only available in the continental US.

Channel your inner cyclist with Peloton's spin bike.
Peloton's $2,245 Bike is a spin bike designed to mimic what it's like to ride on the road. It has an adjustable seat and handle bars and features a 21.5-inch touchscreen display. Use the display to participate in live and on-demand classes from home -- this feature costs an additional $39 per month. (It's 1,895, plus 39 per month, in the UK. It's not yet available in Australia.)

Running is hard, but Peloton's Tread makes it a lot more fun.
The $3,995 Peloton Tread is a smart treadmill. Pay $39 per month to access Peloton's live and on-demand Tread classes. Train for a beginner 5K on the track or participate in an advanced high intensity class alongside other seasoned runners. The Tread features a 32-inch touchscreen display, too, so you can easily follow along with whatever guided classes you select, access your profile settings and view your stats, including calories burned, from each workout. (It's not yet available in the UK or Australia.)

Mirror, the Peloton Bike and the Peloton Tread were installed for me by professional dealers sourced by Mirror and Peloton. Mirror charges an extra $250 for the delivery and installation; Peloton includes it with your purchase, which is good because the Tread, in particular, weighs over 450 lbs. (over 200 kg).
After each installation, it was my turn to download the Mirror app or access the Peloton touchscreen display to create my account, sign up for classes and start exercising.
ClassPass Live was the only service out of the four that had a simple do-it-yourself installation process. It involved connecting the Google Chromecast to my TV and making sure the ClassPass app was functioning properly.
From there, testing was all about trying out a bunch of different classes and seeing how well the app, TV screen or display made it for me to follow along, improve my technique and stay motivated. Value also plays a large part here, since the products I tested ranged from the $79 ClassPass Live service with a $19 monthly fee to the $3,995 Peloton Tread with a $39 monthly fee.
Here are some questions I routinely asked myself:
ClassPass Live offers the best overall value and has my favorite classes (both in terms of variety and how they're filmed). Mirror has the best heart-rate monitor integration via its easy-to-read screen. Both Peloton products are well-designed and keep you motivated by displaying real-time competitive rankings every time you take a class.
There's no overall winner here because each product or service offers something different. There are a lot more smart fitness gadgets out there, too -- from electricity-generating treadmills to home boxing systems -- we've just barely scratched the surface.

Medicare insurers are starting to offer big Apple Watch discounts – The Verge
Posted: at 4:51 pm
In a major step in Apples push to market its Apple Watch as a health and fitness device, a private Medicare insurer is now subsidizing the cost of the Watch for its members, as first reported by CNBC.
Devoted Health members can put $150 of Wellness Bucks toward the cost of an Apple Watch. That would shave off just over a third of the price of the $399 Apple Watch Series 5. Wellness Bucks arent specifically allocated for wearables; they can also go toward fitness classes and weight loss programs.
Devoted Health isnt the first insurer to make it easier for people to get an Apple Watch Apple has partnered with insurance companies like Aetna and UnitedHealthcare, for instance but Devoted Health is a Medicare Advantage insurer, which is a private company that covers Medicare benefits for older Americans.
Though Devoted Health is a relatively small insurer CNBC says the company has about 4,000 members and is only available in Florida the movement is still significant: 20 million Americans received care through Medicare Advantage in 2018, according to figures from Kaiser Family Foundation. That suggests momentum in Apples apparent plans to target Medicare insurers, as CNBC says that several of the Medicare Advantage plans they contacted were also considering an Apple Watch fitness benefit.
Some of the Apple Watchs features appear to court this market: heart rate monitoring and fall detection are among the perks of newer Apple Watch models. Working with insurers in this way could swell Apple Watch sales as older Americans use them to monitor their habits. Fitbit is also competing in this space, and some insurers offer Fitbits instead of Apple Watches to achieve essentially the same thing. Some insurers, such as Blue Shield of California, have offered people enrolled in their programs incentives for hitting their wearable goals.

As I enter middle age, these are the fitness lessons I wish I could teach my younger self – The Globe and Mail

Just like solving an algebra problem or landing a 747, the principles of getting in shape are governed by a specific order of operations.
iStockPhoto / Getty Images
In November Ill be turning 40. When youre in the solipsistic throes of youth and young adulthood, middle age seems like a lifetime away. Now here it is and, clichs be damned, I cant help but reflect upon the past few decades, specifically as they pertain to my trek through the health and fitness world.
Mistakes have been made. Efforts were wasted. Time was lost. If I could mentor my 20-year-old self, the first thing I would do is collect all of the tattered fitness and lifestyle magazines that would soon lead me astray and throw them all in the trash where they belong. Then, I would sit myself down and impart the following hard-earned knowledge.
Remember recess? Remember how much fun it was to be set loose upon the schoolyard after enduring hours of enforced sitting? Unlike gym class, with its ethos of might is right, recess provided an outlet for getting physical that was accessible to all.
Story continues below advertisement
Playground games such as double dutch, red rover and tag always appealed to me more than traditional sports, but as we age, society tells us to stop playing games, to get serious, to respect and follow the rules. The grown-up rules of physical fitness emphasize pain, suffering and drudgery over pleasure, joy and leisure. Exercise becomes a form of corporal punishment for simply existing; you cant indulge in any of lifes rewards without having to pay the price on the treadmill the next day.
I fell victim to this mindset for far too many years. It wasnt until I discovered martial arts that things began to shift. Here was something that looks and feels a lot like playing, but also makes me sweaty and strong. My days of half-heartedly working through random bodybuilding workouts were numbered.
The point here is that there is great happiness to be had in being active, you just have to find the right outlet. Powerlifting, CrossFit, kettlebell sport, parkour, gymnastics, cycling, swimming, dancing, walking, running, rowing, climbing each of these activities has merit, each can deliver results. If your current workout is leaving you bored and listless, try something new. A whole world of movement possibilities awaits.
Just like solving an algebra problem or landing a 747, the principles of getting in shape are governed by a specific order of operations. However, unlike the laws of mathematics and aerodynamics, the consequences for ignoring the rules of fitness arent as dire. The worst thing that will happen, outside of actually injuring yourself, is a complete lack of progress in reaching any of your goals.
There are variations on these steps, catchy turns of phrase that certain coaches will use to enhance their industry brand, but the gist is the same first you enhance stability, then you build strength, then you apply that strength to some form of fast, explosive movement. The logic of this continuum is evident you cant be fast without being strong, and you cant be strong without first building a stable foundation. Of course, all of this was beyond me when I first started lifting, which is why I didnt progress for a long time.
The fitness industry sells itself by using exciting images of muscular people doing cool things Kettlebell swings! Box jumps! Deadlifts! the implicit message being: This could be you. Naturally, these sorts of advanced exercises are what newbies are drawn to when they first enter the gym, when what they should be doing is learning how to move properly. I know planks and push-ups are boring, but you must master your body first. Then, and only then, are you ready to increase resistance.
This is a corollary to the last two points, if not a summary of my fitness philosophy in general. Barbells are designed to support significant weight hundreds upon hundreds of pounds and in that respect, they do their job very well. Now, what about you. What are you wired to do?
Story continues below advertisement
Story continues below advertisement
If your answer is move as much weight as humanly possible, then stick with barbell training. It will serve you well for a time, as long as your technique and programming are sound, but eventually your body will break. Watch the documentary Westside vs. the World for evidence of this.
For everyone else, its time to think outside of the squat rack. If youre walking into your workouts with anything less than a semi-reluctant enthusiasm, freeing yourself from the confines of barbells and benches can have a dramatic impact on your mindset. Think push-ups over bench press, pull-ups over pull-downs, sled pushes over squats. Actually, everyone should squat, you just dont need to sling a barbell on your back to do so.

Why Draymond Green Decided to Invest In Fitness – menshealth.com
Posted: at 4:51 pm
Summer 2019 was a wild one for the National Basketball Association. Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving went to Brooklyn! Kawhi Leonard and Paul George went to the Clippers! Anthony Davis went to the Lakers! Draymond Green went...actually, Draymond Green sat out the whole player movement portion of the offseason. While the former Defensive Player of the Year could have been the marquis player in next summer's class, he instead chose to sign a 4 year, $100 million dollar maximum contract extension to remain with the team he's been with his whole careerthe Golden State Warriors. Sitting out the crazy parts of the year's offseason meant that Green had the time to focus on things he's passionate about; this summer, that was fitness, and he's taken some of that money to open three Blink Fitness gyms in the Detroit and Chicago areas.
When Green was a kid, growing up in Saginaw, Michigan, he didn't have access to gyms. In fact, the first time he ever saw gym equipment was when he was a freshman at Michigan State, gearing up for his first season playing basketball for Coach Tom Izzo. "I remember my first time getting on a stairmasterI was overweightand the pedals went straight to the floor," he says. "I couldnt even keep them up; I had never seen a stairmaster machine."
So he was inspired, eventually, to make it possible for not just any gyms, but affordable gyms to be available in neighborhoods similar to the one he grew up in. In recent months, Green has opened Blinks in Warren, Michigan, Redford, Michigan, and Evanston, Illinoisall small towns that could easily be home to, well, the next Draymond Green. "Being able to offer a helping hand in helping others, to help their loved ones, is important to me," he says. He doesn't plan on stopping at those first three, eitherthe plan right now is to eventually open 20, with the possibility of even more.
And while physical fitness has always been importanttransforming his body is what helped him become the NBA superstar he is today, after allhe keeps a keen eye on the mental aspect of both his own wellness and the league at large, too. This summer, the NBA announced new mental health guidelines for all 30 of its teams, which include having 1-2 mental health professionals retained full-time per team. Green deeply praised the efforts of Adam Silver, the NBA's commissioner who spearheaded the new policy. "It always floats under the radar, so I think its important to be in a great mental state when playing this game at such a high level," the versatile 6'7'' forward says. "Its something that has to be taken seriously, and I think its definitely been taken seriously in our sport."
Green also credits the idea of 'wellness' and self-care as a one of the pillars to living life the right way. "Wellness is very important," he says. "Its one of the single most important things because it directly impacts everything you do in your life and so obviously were talking from a health and wellness standpoint, but just wellness overall is extremely important."
Icon SportswireGetty Images
There were also a few aspects of Green's summer that have been left up to mystery. While he was spotted with LeBron James on the set of the upcoming Space Jam 2, he's still playing coy about what's going on with that whole thing ("I'm not sure I can answer that," he says when asked about the rumors).
What he definitively sets the record straight on, though, is the nature of his in-game trash talk. Just about from the moment he first entered the league, Green has been one of its most animated and exciting players to watchif you're a fan, you love to root for him, and if you're an opponent, you hate going against him.
Part of that is due to his defensive dominance and versatility, but another part is his reputation as one of the league's most effective trash talkers. With a few months off in between seasons, do any ideas for ways to get in anyone's head start forming in the back of his head? That answer is the most definitive no of any.
"Trash talking isnt something you practice," Green says. "Its a natural thing. I grew up playing the game that wayyoure at the rec center, youre in high school, you talk. Thats just the way I grew up playing the game of basketball."
So that settles itDraymond Green, just as versatile at talking trash as he is at defending every single person on the court.

Welcome tomy new health and fitness column. As a dog trainer, functional fitnessconsultant and personal defense trainer, my intention every other week will beto get you thinking about getting off the couch, putting down the sweets andgoing outdoors to discover your greater self. These articles will be yoursource for secrets to success with your healthy, active lifestyle challenges.
Yourgreatest battles toward success in life take place within the deepest corners ofyour mind. I commonly refer to this concept as a mental fighting ring. Ibelieve your biggest circles of influence affect your inner battles in thisring. The part of you that ultimately wins is determined by yourconditioning. Article subjects may include the following.
Statisticsshow that 60-70% of your fitness successes result from your diet. Regardless ofhow awesome your gym, trainer or your favorite YouTube channel is, nothingbeats keeping your diet close to the earth. As the saying goes, You cant outtrain or out run a bad diet. You really are what you eat, down to the cellularlevel. Your body is an amazing assembling of all the nutrition you put into it.My diet approach is challenging, but the challenges can result in you losing poundsof fat and keeping them off.
Fitness tipswill be based on functional fitness which is an overused and highlymisunderstood term that refers to a powerful and highly effective approach totraining. Applied properly, you get amazing results. The motivation will be toget off the machines in the gym and training on your feet. My simple challengeswill help you develop a body that performs better, systems that function moreefficiently, and a more impressive reflection. Sound good? Stay tuned.
How does dogtraining fit into the fitness equation? I asked myself that exact question 10years ago when trying to figure out what to do with my dog training and fitnesscredentials. My advice are the results of years of studying many popular dogtraining solutions, developing effective ways through trial and error as wellas from teaching people how to relax and step into a better leadership positionwith Rex. Ultimately, youll discover fun ways to get active outdoors (besidesyour yards) and bond with your dog, while building some stronger muscles onyour body and ultimately, dropping and keeping off pounds of fat(hypothetically speaking of course, but you never know).
If youarent aware of your surroundings and you cant run, quickly hide or fight inan emergency, whats your value as a family defender? My greatest workoutexperiences came not from preparing for my Spartan Races or my sports historyas a youth in Monrovia and Duarte, or in college. My greatest challenges camefrom the training and conditioning associated with earning multiple back beltsand becoming a top nationally rated martial arts competitor. Now, as a shootingcompetitor and stunt professional, nothing tops the level of functional trainingthat fight conditioning offers.
Stay tunedfor my next article when I introduce a delicious secret smoothie ingredientsfor quick athletic recovery.

This 69-Year-Old Lifter Has a Stronger Grip Than You – msnNOW
Posted: at 4:51 pm
Juji & Tom - YouTube Juji & Tom shared a clip of 69-year-old lifter, nicknamed the "Vice Grip Viking", showing off his grip strength and beating a record set by Martins Licis.
Grip strength is an important component of your overall health and fitnessand an old-timer just showed up a gym full of lifters, handling over 200 pounds. The 69-year-old Odd Haugen has such burly forearms and fingers that he claims to have trademarked the nickname "Vice Grip Viking." More like "Nice Grip Viking," am I right?
Odd's display was caught on camera by YouTubers Juji & Tom, a.k.a. content creator Tom Boyden and athlete Jon Call, who performed a series of weightlifting tricks and stunts during his stint on Season 11 of America's Got Talent. In a video posted earlier this year, they claimed to have captured current World's Strongest Man champ Martins Licis setting the world record for grip strength, at 205 pounds... but it looks like the V.G.V. just smashed that, lifting 208.
The video also includes a different challenge in the form of the "loser's grip," a tool which is much more difficult to handle due to its pyramid shape. Everybody in the gym struggles to lift this one except Odd, of course, who beats the others with his vice-like grip and lifts the 28-pound weight. That man must have one hell of a handshake.
But grip strength is more than just a cool stunt. Grip strength is important for your overall lifting prowess, since you'll only be able to handle heavier loads if you can physically hold them off the ground, it's and also a predictor for health and mortality. If you're working on your lifting game, here are some tips for building your grip strength:

New study says sleeping less than 6 hours a day may increase risk of heart disease, cancer – News 5 Cleveland
Posted: at 4:51 pm
CLEVELAND Getting more than six hours of sleep can be difficult for some, but getting less than that while battling a chronic disease could be a deadly combo.
Doctors say if you don't get enough sleep, your body won't have enough rest for recovery and stress levels start to build up which has some serious consequences.
Researchers at the American Heart Association sleep-tested more than 1,600 adults, then tracked their health for twenty years. They then published their findings in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
The study found middle-aged adults with high blood pressure or type two diabetes who slept less than six hours a night had twice the risk of dying from heart disease or stroke and people with a history of heart disease or stroke who slept the same amount had three times the risk of dying from cancer.
And recently there's some interesting research to suggest that we have what's called endogenous biologic rhythms also called circadian rhythms. Each cell in your body for instance has a rhythmic occelation of processes and metabolism. And if you disrupt the intricate rhythm of cells and organ systems, bad things happen, said Dr. Sanjay Rajagopalan, Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine at University Hospitals.
On the flip side, researchers found sleeping more than nine hours was also detrimental to health.
The study also found people with "fractured" sleep, defined as moving or waking up during sleep phases, also had higher levels of early disease.
