Motivation Matters: Motivation and New Year’s resolutions | Business – The Union Leader
Posted: at 10:42 am
IF YOURE setting out to make New Years resolutions, this is probably not the first time you have done so. Its easy to get discouraged as ones memory sometimes brings to mind past failures. But with a little discipline, perhaps we can recall instead many more successes than setbacks we have had in achieving goals set over the years.
Psychological research has established the innate desire we humans have to grow, to learn, to succeed. Its just how we are designed. See the baby lying in a crib, continually looking about, drawing things closer as she seeks to explore the world about her.
So, it follows that a desire for growth explains a lot of the motivated drives we experience. When we channel that natural source of energy, great things can happen, including keeping New Years resolutions. To successfully tap into this very natural self-motivation, an eye must keep focused on the nutrients that lead to intrinsic motivation. Here are a few ideas:
1. Become the primary source of your motivation.
Too many people start off the resolution process on the wrong foot. If you dig beneath the surface of what is driving them to undertake significant changes in their lives, it will likely become apparent it was someone else who really had the idea. For example, the persons physician encouraging weight loss, or a spouse pressing the need for better conditioning, etc. There is nothing wrong with input from significant others, of course, provided your judgment is the deciding factor.
2. Set achievable goals with some stretch in them.
We like to be challenged, but not overly so (due to fear of failure or becoming overwhelmed by nonrealistic expectations). Set specific targets and monitor your progress toward those goals. For example, if weight loss, record progress on a calendar. If you find yourself easily surpassing your goals, adjust them. If your plan entails conditioning, establish time and pace goals. Celebrate significant milestones. If you fail or have a setback, dust yourself off and get back to the task at hand. Most achievements that really matter will require endurance and persistence.
3. Partner with a trusted friend.
This can provide the much-needed encouragement to overcome obstacles or procrastination. Years ago, my tennis partner and I were running on a track on New Years Day. When our conversation came around to careers yet again we decided to do something more than complain about the woes of working in Corporate America at the time. We both had enjoyed our experiences in higher education and determined to seek out positions in that field. We shook hands and consistently followed up with each other on what steps we were taking. By the summer, we both had secured positions in leading universities. There was a lot of caring that went on as we shared progress and frustrations with each other.
Chances are that you have achieved quite a lot in your lifetime. Treat these resolutions as just more of the same only a bit more intentional, perhaps.

The under-the-radar motivation driving Newcastle’s fine form – and that will shape club’s future – Chronicle Live
Posted: at 10:42 am
Newcastle Uniteds fantastic form is being driven by a fierce team spirit, some smart game management and a slice of earned good fortune.
But theres another factor motivating this group which hints at the bigger issues to come for the Magpies: and thats that a good chunk of these players are playing for their futures, either at St James Park or elsewhere.
Of the eleven starters on Saturday, three are entering the final six months of their contracts. A further three are going into the last 18 months of deals which are under discussion with the clubs hierarchy.
The players with a summer 2020 contract expiration are Javier Manquillo, Andy Carroll and Federico Fernandez all of whose futures are in the balance.
Newcastle United have 20 players out of contract by the end of 2021 - and one loan player to make a decision on.
That includes six of the players who started the last match against Bournemouth, along with Matty Longstaff - who played for England's under-20s last night - and the injured Matt Ritchie, a strong contender to start when he recovers from an ankle problem.
Ki 5.4m, Carroll 5.4m, Fernandez 6.3m, Manquillo 4.5m, Elliot 900k, Darlow 3.1m, Longstaff 5m, Colback 2.7m
Also out of contract: Jetro Willems (loan)
Total values: 33.3m
Saivet 900k, Murphy 4m, Lazaar 900k, Aarons 450k, Atsu 5.4m, Yedlin 7.2m, Hayden 9m, Gayle 13.5m, Ritchie 10.8, Shelvey 13.5m, Schar 11m, Clark 5.4m
Total values: 82.05m
Total value across two transfer window: 115.35m
* All values from Transfermarkt
And of the 2021 crop, Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey and Fabian Schar all started the match against Southampton. Ciaran Clark, Matt Ritchie, Dwight Gayle, DeAndre Yedlin and Christian Atsu are also heading into the final 18 months of their contracts, making that summer potentially the biggest overhaul of personnel in recent times.
So for all that were heading into recruitment season, it is contract issues that are set to dominate the Newcastle agenda in the next couple of years.
As much as that creates uncertainty, it also gives Newcastle potential to remould the squad in the image that Steve Bruce wants. And just as important is the powerful motivation that gives several players to prove that a new deal is justified.
Manquillo has certainly never played as well as he has in his recent streak of fine form, which culminating in shutting out Wilfried Zaha on Saturday a display which prompted Bruce to hail him as Newcastles best player on the day.
Fernandez has also surprised those at Newcastle who felt that he would be the natural candidate to exit after the departure of Rafa Benitez, a manager who was so personally responsible for his signing. At 30 years of age he is approaching probably the final big contract of his career and hed ideally like that to be at Newcastle.
Both are making compelling cases for extensions, as is Carroll whose influence off-the-field is as crucial as his performances on it.
Of all the big contract decisions facing them, United have only addressed Martin Dubravkas so far but its understood other contract discussions are moving in the right direction. Recent form might encourage Newcastle to act even quicker.
This black and white band of brothers are giving Uniteds hierarchy some welcome headaches.

Actions, Motivations, and Trust – Innovation Excellence
Posted: at 10:42 am
by Yoram Solomon
(Excerpt from my upcoming book The Book of Trust):
One element of personal shared values isencompassed in the why we are taking action, and what action we choose totake. Imagine two people as in the image below.
Each is driven by motivations and interests that are not necessarily made visible to the other person. These are their Why. Why they are doing things. Those can be aligned between the two of them but could also be conflicting (relatively opposite to one another), or simplydifferent (not the same, but not conflicting, either). Those invisible interests or motivations drive them to take action, or state interests publicly. Those actions can be in cooperation with one another or conflicting with one another. How does that affect trust between them? The following table will explain it. The highest level of trust will result when both people have their above the fold interests and actions, but also their motivations aligned. We agree not only what we do and how we do it, but also on why we do it. The second highest level would occur when our stated, public interests and actions are conflicting, but our underlying motivation and values are aligned. This would be when we hold constructive disagreements, where we argue the what and how, but we trust each other due to having aligned why. An interesting phenomenon happens when we agree on what or how we do things, but we dont agree on why. In other words, we have different motivations for doing the same thing. Even worse, we may have conflicting motivations and values that still lead us to do the same thing. The level of trust would be low, and we will have an ad-hoc dependency on each other. We will work together because we believe we should take the same action, but we recognize that we do it for different, or even opposite reasons. As soon as this action is complete, our partnership may fall apart. Faster if it was based on conflicting motivation than on simplydifferent, albeit not conflicting motivation.
If we prefer to take different actions due to different motivations, we almost get to the point in which we dont care. We will be experiencing a low level of trust, due to the combination of different actions and different motivations. Obviously, the lowest level of trust will be experienced if we not only disagree on the actions to be taken, but we also have conflicting (not just different) motivations.
As you can see from this discussion, the underlying motivation plays a much bigger role in building and maintaining trust than the actions we take. As long as our motivations, our why, are aligned, we can hold a trusted constructive disagreement and make joint decisions. But if our motivations conflict, we will not trust each other. Even if we doagree on what needs to be done and how. It will only be a temporary agreement. Not trust.
But what could happen if we dont know what the other persons motivation and values are? The ones not readily visible to others?
If your actions and above the foldstated interests are aligned with another person (i.e., you want to achieve the same thing or do something the same way), you might miss the fact that the other person is doing it for a completely different reason, and even worsefor a completely opposite reason than yours. If you dont know that, you might be caught by surprise the next thing you do something together, or when something changes, and the other persons true colors come to light.
If your actions and above the fold stated interest are conflicting with the other persons (i.e., you want to achieve different/conflicting things or do them in a different/conflicting ways), you might miss the fact that the other person wants to do those things for exactly the same reasons you do, and the focus both of you put on the what and how causes you to lose focus on the why which, in this case, is common to both of you. You will be losing the opportunity to hold a constructive disagreement with someone you can trust because they share your values and motivations, except for the fact that you dont know about them.
The conclusion is simple: values and motivations are typically hidden. To be able to trust another person you must know theirs, and to be trusted by them, with all the benefits from it, they must know yours.
Above the fold is a reference to the newspaper industry. When a newspaper is sold, it is folder in half. The top half is whats above the fold line, and therefore more visible to the viewer. Its the first thing that you see, even when the newspaper is lying on the ground.

Cowboys NT Antwaun Woods used arrest as motivation vs. Rams – The Dallas Morning News
Posted: at 10:42 am
Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Antwaun Woods (99) and middle linebacker Jaylon Smith (54) celebrate a stop during the first half of an NFL matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2019 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. (Ryan Michalesko/The Dallas Morning News)
FRISCO Antwaun Woods channeled the angst he felt off the field into his Sunday performance, he said Wednesday.
It wasnt his first time doing so.
Im a kid from the ghetto, Woods said. Football has been the outlet my whole life. Ive got almost two degrees from football. So, yeah.
Woods, a Los Angeles native who attended USC, arguably had the best game of his season this weekend. After a two-game absence to an MCL sprain during which he was arrested and charged with marijuana possession and evidence tampering, he returned to anchor the Cowboys run defense, helping key a 44-21 win against the Los Angeles Rams.
Woods said his arrest absolutely was part of his motivation Sunday.
I just wanted to get all the negativity out of the way and just put something positive on my life, he said.
A couple of missteps for the Cowboys starting nose tackle have made headlines this season.
In the first, he and rookie defensive tackle Trysten Hill were sent home for tardiness to an Oct. 29 meeting. Woods took accountability for the mistake while visibly frustrated the error went public. He felt the incident was not representative of who he is, saying it was the first time in his NFL career he was late for a meeting. He vowed it wouldnt happen again.
On Dec. 3, Woods was pulled over in Frisco for speeding and not signaling a lane change, according to a police report. A little more than 2 ounces of marijuana were found in his vehicle, and Woods admitted to an officer that he stashed a marijuana cigarette inside a half-full water bottle inside the vehicles center console, police said.
Woods approached Sundays game as some measure of redemption.
On the games first carry, Woods stuffed running backs Todd Gurley for a 3-yard loss. He strung together disruptive reps against Rams left guard Austin Corbett, finishing the game with three solo tackles and two assists on 23 defensive snaps. Dallas contained the Rams to 22 rushing yards.
Thats everything in our defense, especially when youre playing a team like the Rams, safety Jeff Heath said. Their offense kind of gets going based off of how theyre able to run the ball. If theyre able to run the ball like you saw last year in the playoff game, then it opens up their whole offense. If you take that away from them, then it makes it really tough on them. Antwaun coming back was big. Thats what he does. He just wreaks havoc in the middle. That was big for us.
Said Woods: Our coaches put together a really good game plan. They put a lot of stress on the nose tackle me and we executed it at a high level.
Briefly: LB Leighton Vander Esch will miss a fifth straight game Sunday against the Eagles. While his neck has responded well to rest, it has not improved to the level required for him to resume football activities at this juncture. Hes not assured to return this season.
LT Tyron Smiths right eye didnt open Wednesday morning for non-football reasons, coach Jason Garrett said. Smith did not practice.
Cowboys cornerback C.J. Goodwin had a matter-of-fact view Wednesday on the thumb he fractured Sunday. I deserved it, he said. Goodwin swiped after a Rams returners legs rather than attempt a shoulder tackle. He underwent surgery Monday and is expected to wear a cast while playing Sunday in special-teams coverage.
Defensive lineman Michael Bennett (foot/illness), linebacker Sean Lee (thigh/pectoral) and linebacker Joe Thomas (knee) also missed practice.

Major Devender Pal Singh.
July 26, 1999. The date shall never be forgotten. Twenty years on Kargil Vijay Diwas, India celebrates the victory and sacrifice of its armed forces who fought back bravely against Pakistan to recapture its territories.
However, this victory came with a heavy price, as the country lost a large number of soldiers during the Kargil war. And one of our brave soldiers, Indias first blade runner, former Major Devender Pal Singh, lost a leg and part of his intestines in the Kargil war.
Only 25 years old when he was hit by mortar fire on a Himalayan battlefield, Major Singh was initially declared dead by the army surgeon at the field hospital, but was later revived. He was told his infected leg had to be amputated.
He served in the Army for 10 years, joining the 7th battalion in 1997. Upon retiring after his injury, he did not give up and started playing sports to train himself. Now he is Indias first amputee marathon runner and holds multiple Limca Records. Read more about the brave heroes from the Kargil War

2. Josh Allen hit these milestones in Week 16
Josh Allen didnt finish with eye-popping numbers in the loss to the Patriots, but he did hit a couple of significant milestones with his performance.
Allen has now accounted for a touchdown in 21 consecutive games, marking a new franchise record. He surpassed Doug Fluties 20-game streak from 1998-99. Allen has also accounted for 29 total touchdowns this season. It is the second-most in a season in team history trailing only Jim Kellys 34 in 1991.
Its football. I dont really think of it any differently or where Im at, or what Ive been through, Allen said. Every game that Ive been in has been a valuable learning experience for me and to be in this one again, obviously we wanted to win it. Thats our goal each and every week. But that was some valuable experience I got to learn from and grow from today.
Allen also passed the 5,000 career passing yardage mark in his 27th game. He is now the third quarterback in NFL history with 5,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in 30 games or less joining Cam Newton (23)and Robert Griffin III (22).
