Demand to boycott lecture on CAA – Telegraph India

Posted: at 8:46 am

A large section of students and teachers at Visva-Bharati have demanded cancellation of a lecture by BJP ideologue and MP Swapan Dasgupta on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act at the varsity on January 8, saying the institute founded by Rabindranath Tagore should not associate itself with the controversy.

Several student outfits, including SFI and the Trinamul Chhatra Parishad, threatened to launch protests if the varsity didnt withdraw the lecture.

The SFI and another Left student outfit wrote to vice-chancellor Bidyut Chakrabarty, pleading that the programme be scrapped as it would hurt the basic motto of the university which believes in neutrality.

The subject of the lecture to be held at Lipika auditorium is: The CAA2019: Understanding and Interpretation.

Residents of the ashram expressed surprise over the central universitys move to give approval for the programme in the main auditorium on the campus.

It came to my notice that the vice-chancellor would preside over the programme. This is surprising as it gives an impression that the varsity approves the amended citizenship law, which is being protested against across the country. Our university cannot do this as our motto is Yatra Visvam Bhavatyekanidam (Where the world makes its home in a single nest), said a resident of the ashram.

Sudipta Bhattacharyya, a professor of economics at Visva-Bharati, said: If the university wants to prove its neutrality, it should have arranged a debate on the issue with people of different ideologies and from different political parties. It would have been healthy for an academic institution like Visva-Bharati.

Anirban Sircar, the officiating public relations officer of Visva-Bharati, said the lecture was a part of the institutions routine lecture series. It is a part of the series of lectures the university was organising. Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta would deliver a lecture on CAA, said Anirban Sircar, the officiating public relations officer of Visva-Bharati.

Sircar said he had no idea of the letters of the two student outfits.

I was considered for PM post in 2004: S.M. Krishna – The Hindu

Posted: at 8:46 am

The suave and U.S.-educated politician S.M. Krishna was actually being considered for the prime ministerial post in 2004 by the Congress when he was the Chief Minister of Karnataka, according to his own disclosure.

In his autobiography titled Smrithivaahini, which is set to be released on January 4 in Bengaluru, the 87-year-old former External Affairs Minister, who severed his nearly five-decade association with the Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2017, has recalled that this piece of information had been shared by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh himself.

Before the 2004 Lok Sabha polls, Mr. Singh had told his college-mate and economist K. Venkatagiri Gowda (who hails from Karnataka) that Mr. Krishna was doing good work in Karnataka as Chief Minister and either he [Mr. Singh] or Mr. Krishna will become the Prime Minister if the Congress-led UPA comes to power in 2004, says the book.

Mr. Gowda had later discussed this with his close circles, the former Chief Minister notes. However, the Congress which went to Assembly polls in Karnataka in 2004 under the leadership of Mr. Krishna, who had drawn the attention of the country with his work as the Chief Minister, lost the elections.

Mr. Krishna says in the book that former Prime Minister and Janata Parivar leader H.D. Deve Gowda had tried to join the Congress twice.

According to him, Mr. Deve Gowda had visited his ministerial quarters in an autorickshaw during the Emergency when D. Devaraj Urs was the Chief Minister. He conveyed his desire to join the Congress, while expressing displeasure over lack of unity among the Opposition parties. But I told him that it was not nice on his part to join the Congress as he had made serious allegations against Mr. Urs and vowed to prove them too, he says, and adds that Mr. Gowda accepted his advice.

Again in the 80s, he himself had made efforts to woo Mr. Gowda and S.R. Bommai to the Congress after the then Prime Minister Charan Singh quit, Mr. Krishna says. He had even organised a meeting between them and senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee. But the two leaders from Karnataka did not come back after that, he recalls.

Mr. Krishna, who hails from the dominant Vokkaliga community, has said that Mr. Gowda used to telephone him several times for transfers of officials and other issues when he became Chief Minister in 1999. I had given standing instructions to my secretary M.K. Shankaralinge Gowda to okay all works sought by Mr. Gowda. But Mr. Krishna has expressed disappointment that despite this, no bonding emerged between him and Mr. Gowda. Perhaps, I may have erred by not creating an opportunity to sit across the table with Mr. Gowda to discuss various issues. Because of this, the gap between us started increasing. I cannot remember him having any soft corner for me when I was the Chief Minister, he says.

S.M. Krishna, who studied postgraduation in law in the U.S. by obtaining Fulbright Scholarship, has recalled his association with The Hindu in his autobiography.

Ours was the only house (in Somanahalli of Maddur taluk in Mandya district) to get The Hindu in those days, Mr. Krishna recalls. Though his father never had college education, he was able to read and understand The Hindu, he says in the book.

S.M. Krishna, who has quit the Congress and joined the BJP, has showered praises on Congress top leader Sonia Gandhi in his autobiography.

Sonia Gandhi is a person who has fundamentally loved Indian culture from the bottom of her heart, he says in the book.

The reference to her has been made in connection with a request by a monk from the Belagavi branch of Ramakrishna Ashram to him as the then Chief Minister to grant land in Belagavi to the ashram to build a memorial as Swami Vivekananda had stayed in that house during his visit in 1892.

The Chief Secretary had turned down the request as that land belonged to the government guesthouse. But the matter had reached Ms. Gandhi, who in turn told Mr. Krishna that it was better to give the land to the ashram, he says.

Following this, Mr. Krishna not only issued an order transferring the land to the ashram, but also got a copy of the order issued to the ashram from Ms. Gandhi during her visit to the State, he says.

The conflict between the judiciary and legislature was witnessed in the 1950s too when Kengal Hanumanthaiah was the Chief Minister, according to former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna.

In his autobiography, he has narrated how the then Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court Medhappa had taken up a contempt of court case against Mr. Hanumanthaiah in connection with an incident. Both were strong personalities who were not willing to take a back seat.

Finally, the Chief Justice was about to retire on a Saturday and he wanted to pronounce the order on Friday. But following the advise of his lawyer that such a situation may result in him going to jail owing to paucity of time to file an appeal before the Supreme Court, Mr. Hanumanthaiah used the special power vested in the government to declare a holiday for the High Court on Friday.

This resulted in Mr. Medhappa retiring without pronouncing the order, Mr. Krishna recalls.

Arlo Guthrie selling $1.6 million Indian River County home, moving to Brevard County – Florida Today

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY He's sung about New Orleans, Los Angeles and Massachusetts, but when it comes to calling a place home, the Sebastian River area has sung to Arlo Guthrie's heart.

"Simply said, I love the area," said the 72-year-oldlegendary folk singer who lives on the riverside in the Roseland area in northern Indian River County, about 15 miles north of Vero Beach. "Although its changing rapidly, the area around here has some sensibilities that suit me personally."

Guthrie's home is up for sale for $1.65 million, but he's not packing his guitars and furniture and moving too far away. His partner, Marti Ladd, has a home in Micco in Brevard County, just a few miles from his current home.

They'll move there once the house, which was listed in December, is sold.

The two-story, four-bedroom house he built on Indian River Drive is bigger than his current needs. But Guthrie said the Sebastian River area fits him just fine because "it isnt too built up, therere no huge hotels along the coasts, the traffic is reasonable, theres great food and shopping without the desire to continuously make it bigger and better."

Realtor Janyne Kenworthy ofTreasure Coast Sotheby's International Realty is handling the sale of the home. The online listing touts the home at 13690 N. Indian River Drive as "Arlo Guthrie's home!" and highlightsits wide river views, private riverfront decks and tropical courtyard garden.

Guthrie was one of the performers at the legendary Woodstock concert in 1969. He rose to fame on his song, "Alice's Restaurant," which chronicled a1965 littering arrest in Massachusetts andseguedinto a Vietnam War protest. He's the son of another folk legend, the late Woody Guthrie.

Guthrie begins his "20/20 Tour" next month, with a Feb. 9 concert in Clearwater. He'll hit 22 cities in 3 1/2 months for the tour.

"Ive spent the better part of the last 50 years as a touring musician," he said. "I loved returning here for a few weeks at a time, restoring myself, visiting friends, and generally being under the radar. It gave me time to enjoy the river, the sunshine, the sense of being a local in a kind of old Florida that almost doesnt exist anymore."

Guthrie's travels brought him to Florida many times in his younger adult life. Specifically, he would visit his in-laws in West Palm Beach in the 1970s and 1980s.

More: Review: Alice's Family Restaurant famous for fluffy omelets, friendly wait staff, fair prices

He eventually became friends with many at the Kashi Ashram ranch in Roseland. The ranch is an interfaith spiritual community based on kindness, compassion and service, embracing the sacred practices of many traditions, according to its website. It was founded by Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati in 1976, whohas since died..

"I still have many dear friends there," he said. "So our trips to the area included spending time with bothfamilies'.

In 1987, Guthrie and hiswife, Jackie, purchased the property known as the "Crabhouse." It was once a U.S. Coast Guard station, then became a crab business. The couple intended to restore the building and place his recording studio there, but damages from hurricanes across several years curtailed those plans.

Instead, the Guthries built their home there.

"It took a long time, but we finally finished construction in 2010," Guthrie said. "By the time we finished it, all the kids had moved out and began having kids of their own. For a couple of years Jackie and I enjoyed the place, especially when the kids visited."

Jackie Guthrie died in 2012 at age 68.

"The house remains as it was originally designed;areally big place," Guthrie said. "It would be better suited for a young family. In other words, its time to let it go."

He hates to part with at least one aspect of the home.

"The thing I will most likely miss is sunrise on the Indian River," he said. "Its simply magical, and this home is essentially on the water. I dont expect Ill find that anywhere else."

Odisha villagers, deprived of basic facilities, show the way in education – The New Indian Express

Posted: at 8:46 am

By Express News Service

BERHAMPUR: Gaida, a non-descript village in Patrapur block of Ganjam district may lack basic amenities but its residents have made a mark in various fields by educating themselves braving all odds.

Situated on a hill on the border of Ganjam and Gajapati districts, the village has no approach road and one needs to walk for at least four hours through slippery patches to reach the village. Inhabited by 19 families with a population of little over 100, the village also has no anganwadi centre or school. The nearest school is at Adanga village, around 4 km away.

Since children need to cross two nullahs near Kandaamba and Dhobatutha to reach Adanga, parents prefer sending their wards to a school in Badua village, around 6 km away. The children of the village get admitted to Ashram schools in Tumba and Kankia villages for higher education.

Interestingly, Gaida has a sizeable number of literate persons and some are serving in private and Government within and outside the State. While around 10 residents of the village are working in private companies in other States, six are Government teachers and two are posted in Horticulture and Postal departments.

This year, three students of the village-Sarat Karji, Khetramohan Karji and Puspalata Karji were given laptops for securing more than 60 per cent marks in Plus Two examinations. While four of the youths from the village are studying in Plus Three, one Ranjita Karji is pursuing her Post Graduation in Commerce.

This despite the fact that the village has virtually remained cut-off from the rest of the world. But, absence of basic amenities remains a stark reality in Gaida whose residents walk for a day to reach Dobatia chowk to collect PDS commodities. Absence of road has kept them deprived of health care. A couple of years back, solar light system was installed by OREDA in the village but due to lack of maintenance, most of them are now lying defunct.

Earlier the villagers used to earn their livelihood by collecting forest produce. But now they migrate to other places in search of work. Meanwhile, block office sources said funds have been sanctioned for construction of roads to village in Ankulu and Buratala panchayats of Patrapur.

Yoga indeed is a great stress buster and improves lifes quality too. One of the best decisions in life will be to buy a yoga mat and start practicing. The best philosophy, yoga is a medium to maintain the right balance of mind and soul. The idea was originally introduced by one Indian sage, Patanjali. He also wrote Yoga Sutras.

Most of the people start with yoga with immense passion but give up on it, in the middle. Some unnecessary mistakes hinder their growth in the spiritual path. Yoga aspirants must know a few basic points that are important to achieve success in the spiritual path.

Here are some of the common yoga myths one needs to know.

Over ambitious follower Over ambition is never good. By becoming overly ambitious, you should not expect immediate success. Youll end up creating blunders. By becoming over enthusiastic, one sets huge expectations, those are unrealistic expectations actually. By not getting immediate results, the person will be feeling disappointed only. Stay realistic, thats the key.

Setting unrealistic expectations Do not set unrealistic expectations, when you are about to start your new spiritual journey with yoga. Expecting immediate results will make you feel restless and frustrated.

Learn by books only A common mistake again. Only a true Guru will help you explore the spiritual path. Self-learning is not that bad but not having any Guru might create blunders. An expert only will be able to help you get right postures.

Focusing only on basic asanas Explore the spiritual path towards mental peace, by learning new moves, rather than restricting yourself to few basic asanas.

Not being sincere Do not start practicing yoga with money on your mind. Many people learn it with a business goal in mind, which is not good.

With glitzy holiday party dresses officially in the rear view, its time to settle back into the uniform of winter. Yep, were talking about comfy leggings. And as much as we love a pair of celeb-approved designer leggings, Amazons treasure trove of budget-friendly, customer-reviewed basics takes the cake as our go-to leggings destination.

In fact, Amazon shoppers are how the 90 Degree By Reflex High Waist Power Flex Leggings made it on our radar. Theyre one of the retailers top-selling pairs and have amassed nearly 4,000 perfect reviews and an overall 4.3-star rating from leggings enthusiasts and they may be worthy of a permanent spot in your leggings rotation.

Designed with the brands signature buttery-smooth Power Flex Fabric, a comfortable high-waisted silhouette, and a hidden waistband pocket ideal for tucking away credit cards or a house key, the 90 Degree leggings are an athleisure essential with both a flattering and functional fit. They come in more than 30 colors, so you can take your pick from vibrant or pastel shades to shake things up in your all-black leggings drawer.

As is the case with nearly all Amazon gems, the reviews speak for themselves. The leggings are priced at $28 each, which one shopper passionately called a freaking steal. Another gifted a pair to her sister because magic is meant to be shared.

Customers also attest to their gym credibility: The 90 Degree leggings offer light compression and moisture-wicking performance, so you can get your sweat sesh on in comfort. According to one Amazon shopper, theyre even great for CrossFit workouts and can compare to pricier Lululemon options.

If youre in the market for new leggings (which is, lets face it, pretty much always) for the chilly months ahead, head to Amazon and grab a pair of these for snuggling up or hitting the gym in style or maybe a healthy dose of both.
