VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) Metro Vancouvers new food scrap program is costing some school districts tens of thousands of dollars.

Organic food scraps arent allowed in with regular garbage so each school has to make some changes.

Doug Strachan with the Surrey School District says it will cost about $50,000 there but it could have been worse.

There has been a focus on our environmental impact for sometime in the district, many of our schools were already recycling in all the forms mandated by Metro Vancouver, he says.

In Coquitlam its costing about $22,000 this year but more than $60,000 next year.

It is a challenge but we do set some money aside around sustainability initiativesthis year that cost pressure of $22,000 is coming from there. For the following year, this has been put toward the budget process so it will be put forth as a cost pressure.
