The sensuous art of eating and drinking – Economic Times

By Amrit Sadhana

Food is the most irresistible activity because it is needed for our survival. Imagine for a moment, if science finds new pills that will satisfy our hunger. 90% of the charm of living will fizzle out. We dont only eat through the tongue, we eat through all the senses. First we look at the food, then smell it, touch it, and then taste. Food is celebration of senses. This is why it is so difficult to diet.

Most people eat very unconsciously, automatically, robot-like.

There is a beautiful meditation from Tantra which Osho has elaborated upon. The Sanskrit sutra says: When eating or drinking, become the taste of the food or drink, and be filled. This is a deeply sensuous way of relating to food. If the taste of an item is not lived, you are just stuffing. Osho gives some clues:

Go slow, and be aware of the taste. And only when you go slow, can you be aware. Do not just go on swallowing things. Taste them unhurriedly and become the taste. When you feel sweetness, become that sweetness. And then it can be felt all over the body not just in the mouth, not just on the tongue; it can be felt all over the body! A certain sweetness or anything else is spreading in ripples. Whatsoever you are eating, feel the taste and become the taste.

With no taste, your senses will be deadened. They will become less and less sensitive. And with less sensitivity, you will not be able to feel your body; you will not be able to feel your feelings. Then you will just remain centered in the head. This centeredness in the head is the split. Tantra says, do not create any division within yourself. It is beautiful to taste; it is beautiful to be sensitive. And if you are more sensitive, you will be more alive, and if you are more alive, then more life will enter your inner being. You will be more open.

You can eat things without tasting. You can touch someone without touching. We are already doing it We are afraid to touch somebody because symbolically, touch has become sexual. You may be standing in a crowd, in a tram, in a railway compartment, touching many persons, but you are not touching them and they are not touching you. Only bodies are there in contact, but you are withdrawn.

A person who is alive will not be afraid of death because he is living. When you are really living, there is no fear of death. You can even live death. When death comes, you will be so sensitive to it that you will enjoy it. It is going to be a great experience

When drinking water, feel the coolness. Close your eyes, drink it slowly, taste it. Feel the coolness and feel that you have become that coolness, because the coolness is being transferred to you from the water; it is becoming a part of your body. Your mouth is touching, your tongue is touching, and the coolness is transferred. Allow it to happen to the whole of your body. Allow its ripples to spread, and you will feel a coolness all over your body. In this way your sensitivity can grow, and you can become more alive and more filled.

The charismatic leader of a spiritual movement. He founded an ashram in India before leaving to the US. In the US he attracted many followers and amassed a large fortune with a fleet of Rolls Royces.

Osho or Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh was born in 1931 in Central India. He was a

As well as teaching philosophy he also began to attract disciples to follow his own eclectic mix of philosophy and religion. In 1966 he decided to leave his teaching post and give full attention to his role as spiritual Master. In 1974 he moved with his disciples to Pune, India. Here he established a new ashram in a comfortable setting of six acres. In 1980 he was attacked by a Hindu fundamentalist who disagreed with Oshos unconventional stance on religion and spirituality. It is said that due to police incompetence the assailant was never convicted.

Due to failing health Osho decided to leave India for America where he would be able to receive better medical treatment. His disciples bought a large plot of land near Antelope, Oregon. Here they wished to build a large ashram and other buildings. There was often friction between the local townspeople and the ashramites. There was a clash of cultures, and the local townspeople felt threatened by the influx of devotees. Because of this many building permits were denied. This led to ashramites trying to get elected directly to the town council. There were also allegations made that followers of Osho were involved in illegal activities such as spreading salmonella in a local restaurant. More seriously there were allegations of murder made against some followers of Osho. Two were eventually convicted of the murder of Charles Turner who had tried to close the ranch.

In 1987 Osho became fearful of an investigation by the authorities, so he decided to leave the compound in Oregon and went to South Carolina. Here he fell foul of US immigration law. He had arranged false marriages and other violations of immigration laws. He was given a suspended sentence on the condition that he leave the country. Therefore he reluctantly decided to leave for Puna in India. It was at this time that he decided to change his name from Rajneesh to Osho. This is said to be a Japanese word for Master, although others say Osho comes from the term oceanic experience Osho died in 1990, his death certificate gave a reason of heart failure. Although some followers alleged poisoning by the CBI, although these allegations had little evidence to support them.

Osho was born into a Jain family. He though never believed in any one religion but combined elements of many religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism and Christianity. However, he also added new types of meditation practice. His philosophy was a type of Monism that God was in everything. All human beings were in essence divine; it was just that there were different manifestations of that divinity. He introduced a new type of meditation that involved letting go of all attachments to the past and future and ego.

If a seeker could attain a consciousness where there was no past, no future, no attachment, no mind, no ego, no self. Then he would attain enlightenment. One different practice he advocated was to practise physical exercise just before meditation. Unlike many Indian gurus, Osho taught that sex was not an obstacle to spiritual progress. Although many of his disciples led fairly simple and frugal lifestyles, Osho was well known for his love of cars. It is said he amassed over 20 Rolls Royces.

It is estimated over 50,000 Westerners spent time seeking enlightenment with the Guru. At its peak, there were over 200,000 members worldwide, although this dropped off after the scandals of the late 1980s. Osho never wished to appoint a successor, but he did appoint 21 followers to administer the Osho foundation which continues to provide an outlet for the dissemination of his teaching.

Rajneesh (born Chandra Mohan Jain, 11 December 1931 19 January 1990) and latter rebranded as Osho was leader of the Rajneesh movement. During his lifetime he was viewed as a controversial new religious movement leader and mystic.

In the 1960s he traveled throughout India as a public speaker and was a vocal critic of socialism, Mahatma Gandhi, and Hindu religious orthodoxy.

Rajneesh emphasized the importance of meditation, mindfulness, love, celebration, courage, creativity and humorqualities that he viewed as being suppressed by adherence to static belief systems, religious tradition and socialization.

Rajneesh emphasized the importance of meditation, mindfulness, love, celebration, courage, creativity and humorqualities that he viewed as being suppressed by adherence to static belief systems, religious tradition and socialization.

In advocating a more open attitude to human sexuality he caused controversy in India during the late 1960s and became known as "the sex guru".

In 1970, Rajneesh spent time in Mumbai initiating followers known as "neo-sannyasins". During this period he expanded his spiritual teachings and commented extensively in discourses on the writings of religious traditions, mystics, and philosophers from around the world. In 1974 Rajneesh relocated to Pune, where an ashram was established and a variety of therapies, incorporating methods first developed by the Human Potential Movement, were offered to a growing Western following. By the late 1970s, the tension between the ruling Janata Party government of Morarji Desai and the movement led to a curbing of the ashram's development and a back taxes claim estimated at $5 million.

In 1981, the Rajneesh movement's efforts refocused on activities in the United States and Rajneesh relocated to a facility known as Rajneeshpuram in Wasco County, Oregon. Almost immediately the movement ran into conflict with county residents and the state government, and a succession of legal battles concerning the ashram's construction and continued development curtailed its success.

In 1985, in the wake of a series of serious crimes by his followers, including a mass food poisoning attack with Salmonella bacteria and an aborted assassination plot to murder U.S. Attorney Charles H. Turner, Rajneesh alleged that his personal secretary Ma Anand Sheela and her close supporters had been responsible. He was later deported from the United States in accordance with an Alford plea bargain.[

After his deportation, 21 countries denied him entry. He ultimately returned to India and a revived Pune ashram, where he died in 1990. Rajneesh's ashram, now known as OSHO International Meditation Resort and all associated intellectual property, is managed by the Zurich registered Osho International Foundation (formerly Rajneesh International Foundation). Rajneesh's teachings have had a notable impact on Western New Age thought, and their popularity has increased markedly since his death.

Osho left his body in 1990, yet the number of listeners, and devotees he has acquired has been growing exponentially. The reason is his wisdom takes you beyond time and causation, in the enlightened world that is beyond the mind.

Osho is a true light and inspiration for any radical seeker in the world today. His main teaching is about freedom, love, enlightenment, and how to heal our lives from the inside out.

Osho Alpha and Omega

Osho on Samadhi

You can download and read any of his ebooks or order a hardcopy too! Do this and I guarantee your mind will open, perhaps more than it ever has been. You will start to become a whole human being again. The reason why is because youre connecting to his consciousness which is at home, unified with the Divine Source. Osho is an enlightened being, an awakened master who has helped millions of people find their spiritual path to freedom.

The new man that Osho speaks about is one who is an authentic human being. Who is blend of a Zorba the Greek and Siddartha the Buddha. Someone who can let their hair down and dance in the moonlight while peacefully watching the swans sitting on the lake.

Osho is perhaps one of the most radical and rebellious beings who has ever walked this planet. The more books you read of his, the easier it is to understand why. He celebrates life so deeply and passionately that he creates an even deeper sensitivity to it, making life more and more orgasmic to enjoy!

My other favorite spiritual books

My message is simple. My message is a new man, homo novus. The old concept of man was of either/or; materialist or spiritualist, moral or immoral, sinner or saint. It was based on division, split. It created a schizophrenic humanity. The whole past of humanity has been sick, unhealthy, insane. In three thousand years, five thousand wars have been fought. This is just utterly mad; it is unbelievable. It is stupid, unintelligent, inhuman.

Once you divide man in two, you create misery and hell for him. He can never be healthy and can never be whole, the other half that has been denied will go on taking revenge. It will go on finding ways and means to overcome the part that you have imposed upon yourself. You will become a battle-ground, a civil war. Thats what has been the case in the past.

In the past we were not able to create real human beings, but humanoids. A humanoid is one who looks like a human being but is utterly crippled, paralyzed. He has not been allowed to bloom in his totality. He is half, and because he is half he is always in anguish and tension; he cannot celebrate. Only a whole man can celebrate. Celebration is the fragrance of being whole. Only a tree that has lived wholly will flower. Man has not flowered yet.

The past has been very dark and dismal. It has been a dark night of the soul. And because it was repressive, it was bound to become aggressive. If something is repressed, man becomes aggressive, he loses all soft qualities. It was always so up to now. We have come to a point where the old has to be dropped and the new has to be heralded.

The new man will not be either/or; he will be both/and. The new man will be earthy and divine, worldly and other-worldly. The new man will accept his totality and he will live it without any inner division, he will not be split. His god will not be opposed to the devil, his morality will not be opposed to immorality; he will know no opposition. He will transcend duality, he will not be schizophrenic. With the new man there will come a new world, because the new man will perceive in a qualitatively different way and he will live a totally different life which has not been lived yet. He will be a mystic, a poet, a scientist, all together. He will not choose: he will be choicelessly himself. ~Osho (Zorba The Buddha, 1979)

The mind can accept any boundary anywhere. But the reality is that, by its very nature, existence cannot have any boundary, because what will be beyond the boundary again another sky. Thats why Im saying skies upon skies are available for your flight. Dont be content easily. Those who remain content easily remain small: small are their joys, small are their ecstasies, small are their silences, small is their being. But there is no need! This smallness is your own imposition upon your freedom, upon your unlimited possibilities, upon your unlimited potential. ~Osho

By Osho

Try this amazing meditation for JUST a few minutes. It can transform all the pain in your entire life!

When you breathe in, imagine that you are breathing in all the darkness and negativity in your life. Welcome it into your heart. Stop trying to resist it, avoid it or destroy it. That has been taking up all of your energy. As you are breathing in this heaviness, let it be absorbed into your heart before you exhale. And then the moment you breathe out, breathe out golden light. Breathe out your greatest lightness, your highest joy, love and blessing from your heart INTO the source of the negativity. Youll soon transform all the darkness in your life with your breath.

Breathe out all the love that you have, all the blissfulness that you have, all the benediction that you have. When breathing out, pour your love into existence. This is the method of compassion: drink in all the suffering and pour out all the blessings. And you will be surprised what happens when you really do it. The moment you stop resisting all the darkness and heaviness in your inner world, they are no longer sufferings.

The heart has the power to transform any energy to light. The heart is a transforming force, the essential alchemist. It can drink in any misery, pain or sadness and transform it into a lightness. Trust the power of your heart. Once you have learned that your heart can do this magic, this miracle, then keep practicing it again and again.

Experiment with this exercise and let yourself explore every dark area of your life. If you feel overwhelmed, dont give up. It it often the coldest and darkest just before dawn. Just let yourself fully FEEL that which you cannot feel, what youve been resisting. Only then will you have mastered yourself. Continue doing this beautiful method of transforming pain into compassion for 30 days. Youll get better at it and be able to welcome in all the heaviness of the world and pour out such a great love and light that our entire planet is transformed. You have the power within you to do miracles, use it! Youll see how amazingly bright brilliant and alive you will feel!

1) Experience life in all possible ways good-bad, bitter-sweet, dark-light, summer-winter. Experience all the dualities. Dont be afraid of experience, because the more experience you have, the more mature you become.

2) Ecstasy is our very nature; not to be ecstatic is simply unnecessary. To be ecstatic is natural, spontaneous. It needs no effort to be ecstatic, it needs great effort to be miserable. Thats why you look to tired, because misery is really hard work; to maintain it is really difficult, because you are doing something against nature.

3) Remain in wonder if you want the mysteries to open up for you. Mysteries never open up for those who go on questioning. Questioners sooner or later end up in a library. Questioners sooner or later end up with scriptures, because scriptures are full of answers. And answers are dangerous, they kill your wonder.

4) All the Buddhas of all the ages have been telling you a very simple fact: Be dont try to become. Within these two words, be and becoming, your whole life is contained. Being is enlightenment, becoming is ignorance.

6) Truth cannot be defined, although it can certainly be experienced. But experience is not a definition. A definition is made by the mind, experience comes through participating. If somebody asks, What is a dance? how can you define it? But you can dance and you can know the inner feel of it. God is the ultimate dance.

7) To be creative means to be in love with life. You can be creative only if you love life enough that you want to enhance its beauty, you want to bring a little more music to it, a little more poetry to it, a little more dance to it.

8) No dead principles can help, but only living consciousness. Be absolutely unprincipled and just follow life.

9) You can go on changing the outer for lives and you will never be satisfied; something or other will remain to be changed. Unless the inner changes, the outer can never be perfect.

10) Any human being who is becoming independent of conditionings, of religions, scriptures, prophets and messiahs, has arrived home. He has found the treasure which was hidden in his own being.

11) To be alone in the only real revolution. To accept that you are alone is the greatest transformation that can happen to you.

12) Falling in love you remain a child; rising in love you mature. By and by love becomes not a relationship, it becomes a state of your being. Not that you are in love now you are love.

13) Become more and more innocent, less knowledgeable and more childlike. Take life as fun because thats precisely what it is!

14) If you take the responsibility for your life you can start changing it. Slow will be the change, only in the course of time will you start; moving into the world of light and crystallization, but once you are crystallized you will know what real revolution is. Then share your revolution with others; it has to go that way, from heart to heart.

15) Intelligence is a natural phenomenon just as breathing is, just as seeing is. Intelligence is the inner seeing; it is intuitive. It has nothing to do with intellect. Never confuse intellect with intelligence, they are polar opposites. Intellect is of the head; it is taught by others, it is imposed on you. You have to cultivate it. It is borrowed, it is something foreign, it is not inborn. But intelligence is inborn. It is your very being, your very nature.

16) Drop the fear. Fear was taken up by you in your childhood, unconsciously. Now consciously drop it and be mature. Then the life can be a light which goes on deepening as you go on growing.

17) Know the whole world is nothing when it is compared to knowing your own inner mystery of life.

18) Seriousness is a sickness; your sense of humor makes you more human, more humble. The sense of humor according to me is one of the most essential parts of religiousness.

19) Misery nourishes your ego thats why you see so many miserable people in the world. The basic, central point is the ego.

20) The beauty of facing life unprepared is tremendous. Then life has a newness, a youth; then life has a flow and freshness. Then life has so many surprises. And when life has so many surprises boredom never settles in you.

21) What is needed is not something in which you can forget your loneliness; what is needed is that you become aware of your aloneness which is a reality. And it is so beautiful to experience it, to feel it, because it is your freedom from the crowd, from the other. It is your freedom from the fear of being lonely.

22) Man has lost one quality, the quality of zestfulness. And without zest, what is life? Just waiting for death? It cant be anything else. Only with zest do you live; otherwise you vegetate.

23) The perfectionist is bound to be a neurotic, he cannot enjoy life, until he is perfect. And perfection as such never happens, it is not in the nature of things. Totality is possible, perfection is not possible.

24) Your innermost core has always been pure. Purity is intrinsic to you, it cannot be taken away. Your virginity is eternal. You cannot lose it, there is no way to lose it. You can only forget about it or you can remember it. If you forget about it, you live in confusion. If you remember about it, all is clear.

25) In this world the greatest courage is to drop the mind aside. The bravest man is who can see the world without the barrier of the mind, just as it is. It is tremendously different, utterly beautiful. There is nobody who is inferior and there is nobody who is superior there are no distinctions.

26) The mind exists in time, in fact the mind is time; it exists in the past and the future. And remember, time consists of only two tenses, the past and the future. The present is not part of time, the present is part of eternity.

27) Mind is repetitive, mind always moves in circles. Mind is a mechanism: you feed it with knowledge, it repeats the same knowledge, it goes on chewing the same knowledge again and again. No-mind is clarity, purity, innocence. No-mind is the real way to live, the real way to know, the real way to be.

28) Millions of people are suffering: they want to be loved but they dont know how to love. And love cannot exist as a monologue; it is a dialogue, a very harmonious dialogue.

29) There is no evil and there are no evil forces in the world. There are only people of awareness, and there are people who are fast asleep and sleep has no force. The whole energy is in the hands of the awakened people. And one awakened person can awaken the whole world. One lighted candle can make millions of candles lighted without losing its light.

30) The heart is always right if theres a question of choosing between the mind and the heart because mind is a creation of the society. It has been educated. You have been given it by the society, not by existence. The heart is unpolluted.

31) The truth is only a way of speaking; there is not something labeled Truth, that one day you will find and open the box and see the contents and say, Great! I have found the truth. There is no such box. Your existence is the truth, and when you are silent you are in truth. And if the silence is absolute then you are the ultimate truth. But dont think of the truth as an object it is not an object. It is not there, it is here.

32) Mind functions in either/or way: either this can be right or its opposite can be right. Both together cannot be right as far as mind, its logic, its rationality is concerned. If mind is either/or then the heart is both/and. The heart has no logic, but a sensitivity, a perceptivity. It can see that they both can not only be together, in fact they are not two. It is just one phenomenon seen from two different aspects.

33) The heart knows nothing of the past, nothing of the future; it knows only of the present. The heart has no time concept.

34) If the whole existence is one, and if the existence goes on taking care of trees, of animals, of mountains, of oceans from the smallest blade of grass to the biggest star then it will take care of you too. Why be possessive? The possessiveness shows simply one thing that you cannot trust existence. You have to arrange separate security for yourself, safety for yourself; you cannot trust existence. Non-possessiveness is basically trust in existence. There is no need to possess, because the whole is already ours.

35) Drop guilt! because to be guilty is to live in hell. Not being guilty, you will have the freshness of dewdrops in the early morning sun, you will have the freshness of lotus petals in the lake, you will have the freshness of the stars in the night. Once guilt disappears you will have a totally different kind of life, luminous and radiant. You will have a dance to your feet and your heart will be singing a thousand and one songs.

36) If the mind wants to comprehend reality, it will have to come out of the past and the future. But coming out of the past and the future, it is no longer the mind at all. Hence the insistence of all the great masters of the world that the door to reality is no-mind.

37) Existence is not a problem to be solved, it is a mystery to be lived. And you should be perfectly aware what the difference is between a mystery and a problem. A problem is something created by the mind; a mystery is something which is there, not created by the mind. A problem has an ugliness in it, like disease. A mystery is beautiful. With a problem, immediately a fight arises. You have to solve it; something is wrong, you have to put it right; something is missing, you have to supply the missing link. With a mystery there is no question like that. The moon arises in the night. It is not a problem, it is a mystery. You have to live with it. You have to dance with it. You have to sing with it, or you can be just silent with it. Something mysterious surrounds you.

38) Be less of a judge and you will be surprised that when you become a witness and you dont judge yourself, you stop judging others too. And that makes you more human, more compassionate, more understanding.

39) Looking at a sunset, just for a second you forget your separateness: you are the sunset. That is the moment when you feel the beauty of it. But the moment you say that it is a beautiful sunset, you are no longer feeling it; you have come back to your separate, enclosed entity of the ego. Now the mind is speaking. And this is one of the mysteries, that the mind can speak, and knows nothing; and the heart knows everything, and cannot speak. Perhaps to know too much makes it difficult to speak; the mind knows so little, it is possible for it to speak.

40) The witnessing soul is like the sky. The birds fly in the sky but they dont leave any footprints. line Thats what Buddha says, that the man who is awakened lives in such a way that he leaves no footprints. He is without wounds and without scars; he never looks back there is no point. He has lived that moment so totally that what is the need to look back again and again? He never looks ahead, he never looks back, he lives in the moment.

41) All beings are from the very beginning Buddhas. It is like water and ice: Apart from water, no ice, outside living beings, no Buddhas. Not knowing it is near they seek it afar, what a pity!

42) You are a Buddha. But remember you are not a Buddha in any special sense. Everybody is So dont take it in an egoistic sense that I am a Buddha. Dont make it ambitious, dont go on an ambition trip. All is Buddha. Life is Buddha, being is Buddha-hood, existence is Buddha-hood.

43) All that you need is just to be silent and listen to existence. There is no need of any religion, there is no need of any God, there is no need of any priesthood, there is no need of any organization.

44) The whole world is a cyclone. But once you have found the center the cyclone disappears. This nothingness is the ultimate peak of consciousness.

45) All that this world needs is a good cleansing of the heart of all the inhibitions of the past. And laughter and tears can do both. Tears will take out all the agony that is hidden inside you and laughter will take all that is preventing your ecstasy. Once you have learned the art you will be immensely surprised.

46) Life is not a tragedy, it is a comedy. To be alive means to have a sense of humor.

47) If you are absolutely without mind, just pure consciousness, time stops completely, disappears, leaving no trace behind.

48) Unless you become a buddha you have not lived at all because you will not know the great poetry of life, the great music of existence. You will not know the celestial celebration that goes on and on, you will not know the dance of the stars. This bliss is for you! All these flowers and all these songs and all these stars are for you. You are entitled to miracles.

49) The day on which we come to know the supreme consciousness within us, then the outside world will also appear to us like the expanse of the supreme consciousness. The whole will be a mirror to us when we become a mirror within. If we stand near a stone, then we will be able to see ourselves even in the stone. Then we will not look at the stone with that hardness with which we look at man now. Then we shall touch a stone as if we are touching our beloved, because the stone is not stone, then it is God.

50) When you love, you have to become nobody. If you remain somebody, then love never happens. When you love a personeven for a single moment love happens and flows between two personsthere are two nothingnesses, not two persons. If you have ever had any experience of love, you can understand. Two lovers sitting by each others side, or two nothingnesses sitting togetheronly then the meeting is possible because barriers are broken, boundaries thrown away. The energy can move from here to there; there is no hindrance. And only in such a moment of deep love is orgasm possible.

Osho - Rajneesh Chandra Mohan Jain. Born - December 11, 1931, IndiaDied - January 19, 1990, IndiaPhilosophy - neo-sannyasins

"If you really want to know who I am, you have to be as absolutely empty as I am. Then two mirrors will be facing each other, and only emptiness will be mirrored. Infinite emptiness will be mirrored: two mirrors facing each other. But if you have some idea, then you will see your own idea in me."

"Find moments when you are not, and those will be the moments when you will be for the first time...really."

"When you are no more, only then for the first time will you be."

"Be true, and you will be blissful. Be authentic, and you will be happy. And that happiness will be uncaused; it will be just a part of your being true."

The works of Osho challenge readers to examine and break free ofthe conditions, belief systems, and prejudices that limit theircapacity to experience life in all its richness. One of the best-knownand most provocative spiritual teachers of the twentieth century, Oshohas been described by the Sunday Times of London as one of the"1000 Makers of the 20th Century" and by American novelist Tom Robbinsas "the most dangerous man since Jesus Christ." More than a decadeafter his death in 1990, the influence of his teachings continues togrow, reaching seekers of all ages in virtually every country of theworld.

Oshosaid that enlightenment is everyone's natural state, but that one isdistracted from realising it particularly by the human activity ofthought, as well as by emotional ties to societal expectations, andconsequent fears and inhibitions.

He was a prolific speaker (inboth Hindi and English) on various spiritual traditions including thoseof Buddha, Laozi, Krishna, Guru Nanak, Jesus, Socrates, Zen masters,Gurdjieff, Sufism, Hassidism, Tantra and many others. He attempted toensure that no "system of thought" would define him, since he believedthat no philosophy can fully express the truth.

An experiencedorator, he said that words could not convey his message, but that hisbasic reason for speaking was to give people a taste of meditation:I am making you aware of silences without any effort on your part. Myspeaking is being used for the first time as a strategy to createsilence in you.

This is not a teaching, a doctrine, a creed.Thats why I can say anything. I am the most free person who has everexisted as far as saying anything is concerned. I can contradict myselfin the same evening a hundred times. Because it is not a speech, it hasnot to be consistent. It is a totally different thing, and it will taketime for the world to recognise that a tremendously differentexperiment was going on.

Just a moment when I became silent, you become silent. What remains is just a pure awaiting. You are notmaking any effort; neither am I making any effort. I enjoy talking; itis not an effort.

I love to see you silent. I love to see youlaugh, I love to see you dance. But in all these activities, thefundamental remains meditation.

Oshosaid he loved to disturb people only by disturbing them could he makethem think. Accordingly, his discourses were peppered with offensivejokes and outrageous statements lampooning key figures of establishedreligions such as Hinduism, Jainism or Christianity. Concerning thevirgin birth, for example, he said that Jesus was clearly a bastard, since he was not Joseph's biological son. An attempt on his life wasmade by a Hindu fundamentalist in 1980. Osho, however, said that theonly thing he was serious about in his discourses were the jokes theywere the main thing, and everything else was spiritual gossip.

Oshosaid it was very difficult for modern man to just sit and be inmeditation, so he devised so-called Active Meditation techniques toprepare the ground. Some of these preparatory exercises can also befound in western psychological therapies, suchas breathing, gibberish, laughing or crying. His mostsignificant meditation techniques are today known as "OSHO Dynamic Meditation","OSHO Kundalini Meditation","OSHO Nadabrahma Meditation","OSHO Chakra Sounds", For eachmeditation, special music was composed to guide the meditator throughthe different phases of the meditations. Osho said that DynamicMeditation was absolutely necessary for modern man. If people wereinnocent, he said, there would be no need for Dynamic Meditation, butgiven that people were repressed, were carrying a large psychologicalburden, they would first need a catharsis. So Dynamic Meditation was tohelp them clean themselves out; then they would be able to use anymeditation method without difficulty.

Osho Essential teachings

On MEDITATION - Meditation is astate of witnessing without judgments. It is not concentration: it is relaxation, let-go. There is no "how" to this, because "how" means doing one has to understand that no doing isgoing to help. In that very understanding, non-doing happens.

Meditation means awareness. Whatsoever you do with awareness is meditation.Action is not the question, but the quality that you bring to your action.Walking can be a meditation if you walk alertly. Sitting can be a meditation if you sit alertly.Listning to the birds can be a meditation if you listen with awareness.Just listening to the inner noise of your mind can be a meditation ifyou remain alert and watchful. The whole point is: one should not move in sleep. Then whatsoever you do is meditation.

On ENLIGHTENMENT- Enlightenment is everyone's natural state, but that one is distractedfrom realizing it particularly by the human activity of thought, aswell as by emotional ties to societal expectations, and consequentfears and inhibitions.

On LOVE - Love is the only real thing worth doing. All else is secondary. If ithelps love, it is good. All else is just a means, love is the end. Sowhatsoever the pain, go into love. If you don't go into love, as manypeople have decided, then you are stuck with yourself. Then your lifeis not a pilgrimage, then your life is not a river going to the ocean;your life is a stagnant pool, dirty, and soon there will be nothing butdirt and mud. To keep clean, one needs to keep flowing. A river remainsclean because it goes on flowing. Flow is the process of remainingcontinuously virgin. A lover remains a virgin. All lovers are virgin. The people who don't love cannot remain virgin; they become dormant, stagnant; they start stinking sooner or later -- and sooner than later-- because they have nowhere to go. Their life is dead. That's wheremodern man finds himself, and because of this, all kinds of neuroses, all kinds of madnesses, have become rampant.

On CELEBRATION - Celebration is the foundation of my sanyas, not renunciation but rejoicing; rejoicing in all the beauties, all the joys, all that life offers, because this whole life is a gift of God.

On HAPPINESS - Happiness is a function of truth. Whenever there is truth, happiness functions. Whenever there is not truth, happiness stops functioning and unhappiness functions.

On CREATIVITY - To be creative means to be in love with life. You can be creative only if you love life enough that you want to enhance its beauty, you want to bring a little more music to it, a little more poetry to it, a little more dance to it.

Oshowas born Chandra Mohan Jain in Kuchwada, a small village in theNarsinghpur District of Madhya Pradesh state in India, as the eldest ofeleven children of a cloth merchant. At the time, an astrologerpredicted that he might die before he was seven years old according tothe birth chart. His parents, who were Taranpanthi Jains, sent him tolive with his maternal grandparents until he was seven years old.

Oshosaid this was a major influence on his growth because his grandmothergave him the utmost freedom and respect, leaving him carefree; withoutan imposed education or restrictions.

At seven years old, he wentback to his parents. He explained that he received a similar kind ofrespect from his paternal grandfather who was staying with them. He wasable to be very open with his grandfather. His grandfather used to tellhim, "I know you are doing the right thing. Everyone may tell you thatyou are wrong. But nobody knows which situation you are in. Only youcan decide in your situation. Do whatsoever you feel is right. I willsupport you. I love you and respect you as well." He resisted hisparents' pressure to get married.

He was a rebellious, but gifted student, winning the title of All-India Debating Champion.

Hestarted his public speaking at the annual Sarva Dharma Sammelan held atJabalpur since 1939, organised by the Taranpanthi Jain community intowhich he was born. He participated there from 1951 to 1968. Eventuallythe Jain community stopped inviting him because of his radical ideas.

Oshosaid he became spiritually enlightened on 21 March 1953, when he was 21years old. He said he dropped all effort and hope. After an intenseseven-day process he went out at night to a garden in Jabalpur, wherehe sat under a tree: The moment I entered the garden everythingbecame luminous, it was all over the place the benediction, theblessedness. I could see the trees for the first time their green, their life, their very sap running. The whole garden was asleep, thetrees were asleep. But I could see the whole garden alive, even thesmall grass leaves were so beautiful. I looked around. One tree wastremendously luminous the maulshree tree. It attracted me, it pulledme towards itself. I had not chosen it, god himself has chosen it. Iwent to the tree, I sat under the tree. As I sat there things startedsettling. The whole universe became a benediction.

He finishedhis studies at D. N. Jain College and the University of Sagar, receiving a B.A. (1955) and an M.A. (1957, with distinction) inphilosophy. He then taught philosophy, first at Raipur SanskritCollege, and then, until 1966, as a Professor at Jabalpur University. At the same time, he travelled throughout India, giving lecturescritical of socialism and Gandhi, under the name Acharya Rajneesh(Acharya means "teacher"; Rajneesh was a nickname he had been given byhis family). In 1962, he began to lead 3- to 10-day meditation camps, and the first meditation centres (Jivan Jagruti Kendras) started toemerge around his teaching, then known as the Life Awakening Movement(Jivan Jagruti Andolan). He resigned from his teaching post in 1966.

In1968, he scandalised Hindu leaders by calling for freer acceptance ofsex; at the Second World Hindu Conference in 1969, he enraged Hindus bycriticising all organised religion and the very institution ofpriesthood.

In 1969, a group of Osho's friends established afoundation to support his work. They settled in an apartment in Mumbaiwhere he gave daily discourses and received visitors. The number andfrequency of visitors soon became too much for the place, overflowingthe apartment and bothering the neighbours. A much larger apartment wasfound on the ground floor (so the visitors would not need to use theelevator, a matter of conflict with the former neighbours).

OnSeptember 26, 1970, he initiated his first disciple or sannyasin at anoutdoor meditation camp, one of the large gatherings where he lecturedand guided group meditations. His concept of neo-sannyas entailedwearing the traditional orange dress of ascetic Hindu holy men. However, his sannyasins were not expected to follow an asceticlifestyle.

From 1971, he was known as BhagwanShree Rajneesh. Shree means Sir or Mister; the Sanskrit word Bhagwanmeans "blessed one". It is commonly used in India as a respectful formof address for spiritual teachers.

The new apartment also provedinsufficient, and the climate of Mumbai was deemed very bad for hisdelicate health. So, in 1974, on the 21st anniversary of hisenlightenment, he and his group moved from the Mumbai apartment to anewly purchased (by Catherine Venizelos) property in Koregaon Park, inthe city of Pune, a four-hour trip from Mumbai. Pune had been thesecondary residence of many wealthy families from Mumbai because of thecooler climate (Mumbai lies in a coastal wetland, hot and damp, Pune isinland and much higher, so it is drier and cooler).

The twoadjoining houses and six acres of land became the nucleus of an Ashram, and those two buildings are still at the heart of the present-day OshoInternational Meditation Resort. This space allowed for the regularaudio and video recording of his discourses and, later, printing forworldwide distribution, which enabled him to reach far larger audiencesinternationally. The number of Western visitors increased sharply, leading to constant expansion. The Ashram now began to offer a growingnumber of therapy groups, as well as meditations.

During one of his discourses in 1980, an attempt on his life was made by a Hindu fundamentalist.

Osho taught at the Pune Ashram from 1974 to 1981.

On10 April 1981, having discoursed daily for nearly 15 years, Oshoentered a three-and-a-half-year period of self-imposed public silence, and satsangs (silent sitting, with some readings from his works andmusic) took the place of his discourses.

In mid-1981, Osho wentto the United States in search of better medical care (he suffered fromasthma, diabetes and severe back problems). After a brief spell inMontclair, New Jersey, his followers bought (for US$6 million) a64,000-acre (260 km) ranch in Wasco County, Oregon, previously knownas "The Big Muddy Ranch", where they settled for the next four yearsand legally incorporated a city named Rajneeshpuram.

Oshostayed in Rajneeshpuram as the commune's guest, living in a modest homewith an indoor swimming pool. Over the coming years, he acquired famefor the large number of Rolls-Royces his followers bought for his use.

Oshoended his period of silence in October 1984. In July 1985, he resumedhis daily public discourses in the commune's purpose-built, two-acremeditation hall. According to statements he made to the press, he didso against the wishes of Ma Anand Sheela, his secretary and thecommunes top manager.

Increasingconflicts with neighbours and the state of Oregon,as well as seriousand criminal misconduct by the commune's management (includingconspiracy to murder public officials, wiretapping within the commune, the attempted murder of Osho's personal physician, and a bio-terrorismattack on the citizens of The Dalles, Oregon, using salmonella), madethe position of the Oregon commune untenable. When the commune'smanagement team who were guilty of these crimes left the U.S. inSeptember 1985, fleeing for Europe, Osho convened a press conferenceand called on the authorities to undertake an investigation. Thiseventually led to the conviction of Sheela and several of herlieutenants.Although Osho himself was not implicated in these crimes, his reputation suffered tremendously, especially in the West.

Inlate October 1985, Osho was arrested in North Carolina as he wasallegedly fleeing the U.S. Accused of minor immigration violations,Osho, on advice of his lawyers, entered an "Alford plea" throughwhich a suspect does not admit guilt, but does concede there is enoughevidence to convict him and was given a suspended sentence anddeported from the United States.

Osho then began a world tour, speaking in Nepal, Greece and Uruguay, among others. Being refusedentry visas by more than twenty different countries, he returned toIndia in July 1986, and in January 1987, to his old Ashram in Pune,India. He resumed discoursing there.

In late December 1988, hesaid he no longer wished to be referred to as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, and shortly afterwards took the name Osho.

On January 19, 1990,four years after his arrest, Osho died, aged 58, with heart failurebeing the publicly reported cause. Prior to his death, Osho hadexpressed his belief that his rapid health decline was caused by someform of poison administered to him by the U.S. authorities during thetwelve days he was held without bail in various U.S. prisons. In apublic discourse on 6 November 1987, he said that a number of doctorsthat were consulted had variously suspected thallium, radioactiveexposure, and other poisons to account for his failing health: Itdoes not matter which poison has been given to me, but it is certainthat I have been poisoned by Ronald Reagan's American government.

Hisashes were placed in his newly built bedroom in one of the mainbuildings (LaoTsu House) at his last place of residence, his Ashram inPune, India. The epitaph reads, "OSHO. Never Born, Never Died. OnlyVisited this Planet Earth between Dec 11 1931 Jan 19 1990."

With200,000 visitors annually, the Osho International Meditation Resort inPune, India, is one of the largest spiritual growth centres in theworld today.

Today, Osho's books are more popular than everbefore, with translations published in 55 different languages. At theend of the eighties, the majority of people in South Asia wantednothing to do with Osho's commune; but since Osho's death, there hasbeen a sea change in public opinion. In 1991, an influential Indiannewspaper counted Osho, among figures such as Gautama Buddha andMahatma Gandhi, among the ten people who had most changed India'sdestiny; in Osho's case, by "liberating the minds of future generationsfrom the shackles of religiosity and conformism". Since then, histeachings have progressively become part of the cultural mainstream ofIndia and Nepal.

Osho is one of only two authors whose entireworks have been placed in the Library of India's National Parliament inNew Delhi (the other is Mahatma Gandhi). Excerpts and quotes from hisworks appear regularly in the Times of India and many other Indiannewspapers. Prominent admirers include the Indian Prime Minister, Dr.Manmohan Singh, and the noted Indian novelist and journalist, KhushwantSingh. The Osho disciple Vinod Khanna, who worked as Osho's gardener inRajneeshpuram, served as India's Minister of State for External Affairsfrom 2003 to 2004.

In the West, figures such as the American poetand Rumi translator Coleman Barks, the American novelist Tom Robbinsand the German philosopher, author and TV host Peter Sloterdijk havechampioned Osho.

Osho's Ashram in Pune has become the OshoInternational Meditation Resort, one of India's main touristattractions. According to press reports, it attracts some 200,000visitors from all over the world each year; politicians, mediapersonalities and the Dalai Lama have visited the Meditation Resort.

Sadness comes, joy comes, and everything passes by. What remains always is the witness. The witness is beyond all polarities.

Freedom is our most precious treasure. Dont lose it for anything. . . .

Forget about getting, simply give; and I guarantee you, you will get much.

If you cannot love yourself, you dont know even the taste of love or what love means.

Freedom is a ladder: one side of the ladder reaches hell, the other side touches heaven. It is the same ladder; the choice is yours.

Drop the idea that attachment and love are one thing. They are enemies. It is attachment that destroys all love.

Born in a small village in Bareli, Madhya Pradesh, as Chandra Mohan Jain, Oshos transformation from a young man drawn to hypnosis led him to believe in a transcendental life. As a powerful leader, he managed to influence, control and secure a god-like devotion from billionaire heirs, celebrities, lawyers and farmers alike.

In Charisma and Control in Rajneeshpuram: A Community Without Shared Values, author Lewis F Carter mentions that in the years between 1960 and 1968, Osho held several academic positions, even teaching philosophy at a few universities such as Jabalpur University. However, through this period, he began to grow more disillusioned with existing philosophies propelled by Hinduism and even socialism, calling out their hypocrisy.

He began to cultivate his own philosophy one that would later become enshrined in the pages of the Rajneeshee manifesto and would be followed for decades after his death in 1990. A simplified way to sum up Oshos philosophy would be to refer to one of his most famous quotes:

Carter mentions that by 1970, he had rounded up his first batch of disciples, the Neo-Sannyasis, and took under his wing, Laxmi Kuruwa. Later known as Ma Yoga Laxmi, she became his personal secretary and managed to procure funds strong enough for him to settle in Mumbai and receive visitors.

Four years and several hundred followers who were now calling themselves Rajneeshees later, he moved to a property purchased in Koregaon Park, Pune, by one of his disciples who was a Greek heiress, which later became his core ashram from 1974-1981.

Latest News : OSHO TIMES http://oshotimes.blog.osho.com

Osho, known for his revolutionary contribution to the science of inner transformation, continues to inspire millions of people worldwide in their search to define a new approach to individual spirituality that is self-directed and responsive to the everyday challenges of contemporary life. The Sunday Times of London named him one of the '1,000 Makers of the Twentieth Century,' and novelist Tom Robbins called him 'the most dangerous man since Jesus Christ.' Osho's teachings defy categorization, covering everything from the individual quest for meaning to the most urgent social and political issues facing individuals and society today.

His unique "Osho Active Meditations" are designed to first release the accumulated stresses of body and mind, so that it is easier to experience the thought-free and relaxed state of meditation. (Meditation -The First and Last Freedom, by Osho)

About his own work Osho has said that he is helping to create the conditions for the birth of a new kind of human being. He has often characterized this new human being as "Zorba the Buddha" -- capable both of enjoying the earthy pleasures of a Zorba the Greek and the silent serenity of a Gautam Buddha.

Running like a thread through all aspects of Osho's work is a vision that encompasses both the timeless wisdom of the East and the highest potential of Western science and technology.

Osho has been described by the Sunday Times in London as one of the "1000 Makers of the 20th Century" and by American author Tom Robbins as "the most dangerous man since Jesus Christ."

ABOUT OSHO

Osho defies categorization. His thousands of talks cover everything from the individual quest for meaning to the most urgent social and political issues facing society today.

Oshos books are not written but are transcribed from audio and video recordings of his extemporaneous talks to international audiences. As he puts it, So remember: whatever I am saying is not just for you... I am talking also for the future generations. Osho has been described by the Sunday Times in London as one of the 1000 Makers of the 20th Century and by American author Tom Robbins as the most dangerous man since Jesus Christ. Sunday Mid-Day (India) has selected Osho as one of ten people along with Gandhi, Nehru and Buddha who have changed the destiny of India. About his own work Osho has said that he is helping to create the conditions for the birth of a new kind of human being. He often characterizes this new human being as Zorba the Buddha capable both of enjoying the earthy pleasures of a Zorba the Greek and the silent serenity of a Gautama the Buddha. Running like a thread through all aspects of Oshos talks and meditations is a vision that encompasses both the timeless wisdom of all ages past and the highest potential of todays (and tomorrows) science and technology.

Osho is known for his revolutionary contribution to the science of inner transformation, with an approach to meditation that acknowledges the accelerated pace of contemporary life. His unique OSHO Active Meditations are designed to first release the accumulated stresses of body and mind, so that it is then easier to take an experience of stillness and thought-free relaxation into daily life.
