Coaching duo serves as role models for team

Posted: at 7:44 am

It is a tough world out there for kids, making role models a very special commodity these days. In Westlake, a father and son coaching duo from Mossville are being just that for a group of young girls. The Clophus are true life heroes people who quietly dedicate themselves to helping kids, said Angelle Boyette . It really isnt about us; its all about the kids. If we want to lead them the right way, we have to keep them occupied in positive ways, said Mossville native Wilfred Clophus. Boyettes daughter Simone, 7, was one of eight girls to play recreational league basketball in the Westlake/Mossville area under the direction of coaches Wilfred Clophus and his son Elridge. The Eagles ended their season on Valentines Day undefeated - a first for Wilfred, who has coached in the Westlake recreational league for 10 years. At the beginning of the season, we told the team that its not about winning, its about giving us your best effort. If we can have a balanced attack, we will have a good season just remember to give us your best effort in every game. The team did what was asked of them on offense and defense, and the end result was a perfect season, said Wilfred. The undefeated season was also a first for Elridge, who has been coaching alongside his dad for about five years. It wasnt about winning every time; it was about putting out their best effort. But kids are impressionable and once they got some wins under their belt, they came to each game expecting a win. Once they expected to win, they played like they expected it. Athleticism runs in the family. Wilfred, a 1974 graduate of Sulphur High, remembers playing the game as a youth in outdoor courts. He also coached Elridge during the younger mans recreational league playing years. Elridge continued to play basketball for two years as well as football for three at Sulphur High. This season with the Eagles, the duo coached both of Elridges daughters, Nevaeh and Johana, on the recreational team. It is easy working with my dad because I know how he is, he coached me. As for the girls, he works with them the same at home as he does with the team, said Elridge. For Boyette and the other team parents, the praise for the Clophus comes not only from how the team was coached but also with the familys generous spirit. Out of his own pocket, Wilfred, who works alongside Elridge at Alcoa, has provided drinks for the team at games, special treats such as candy for Valentines Day, and uniforms for those whose parents could not otherwise afford them. I know what it is like not to have. If you can help someone, you should, said Wilfred. The world needs more coaches like the Clophus, said Boyette. Elridges father-in-law Jay Cotto, has also dipped into his pocketbooks, providing funds for a party celebrating the end of the season and the teams undefeated record and for hoodies with the teams mascot emblazoned on them. On March 2, the coaches surprised the players with the keepsake hoodies. You have to do something for these kids. What they did is an accomplishment, said Wilfred, adding his praise for the parents. And although next year four of their players will be out of the age bracket for their team, including Elridges daughter Johana, the father and son expect to coach together again next season in January.

Yorktown couple takes path to better health through life coaching

Posted: March 4, 2012 at 7:44 am

They're young and healthy and they work out at the gym several times a week. But Yorktown newlyweds Christa and Alan Riley felt they needed to do better.

The 20-somethings were afraid that their eating habits would catch up with them down the road. Both commute to work at the shipyard in Newport News, where Alan's a supervisor and Christa is in the Apprentice School. They routinely rise before dawn and put in 10-hour work days, punctuated by a brief 30-minute lunch break.

Neither gave much attention to breakfast, they drank sodas constantly, and regularly took the convenience route eating frequently at fast food restaurants and heating up ready-made frozen meals.

"We were eating a lot of chicken nuggets, a lot of processed food," says Christa. "We needed to get away from the 'potato and corn diet'." Alan adds, "We wanted to get fitter. I was bored with the gym." They felt overwhelmed by the pace of their lives and dissatisfied. Something was out of whack.

So they did some research on the Internet and found Rhonda Greene of Body-in-Balance in Newport News, who had just launched a health coaching component as a supplement to her exercise studio. She had all the qualifications they were looking for, says Alan, and the couple signed up for the six-month health coaching program (see sidebar) and once-a-week personal training. The latter has given them both more confidence in the gym they attend. They no longer just do cardio but mix up their workouts with strength training and stretching and have seen improved results already.

NEWPORT NEWS: At the studio

Using the principles of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, Greene works with Christa, while her employee Tirza Rampolla works separately with Alan.

In their second session, the talk of nutrition and eating habits quickly segues into a discussion of other areas of their lives. After following the digressions carefully, each coach deftly steers the duo back to their diets what they're eating, when, and how they feel about it and how that fits with their lives and reflects what's out of balance.

Alan's challenge is to start eating breakfast, to take time to enjoy his lunch instead of wolfing a sandwich for 10 minutes then napping and to select foods for enjoyment in order to gain weight. He's already decreased his soda intake and is drinking orange and apple juice. "It's probably more sugar than anything," he muses.

Christa needs to prioritize all her activities and learn what's important, what's OK to let slide and how to set effective boundaries. Already, in the first two weeks, she has made strides in her diet. "We were really potato people," she says, noting that she hasn't had one since starting the program. At Greene's urging, they're both incorporating more greens and kale specifically into their diet.

Successful but overbooked Lawrence High hoop coach eyes retirement

LAWRENCE Sooner or later, Paul Neal has to make one of the toughest of decisions of his life.

He has to give up one of his two full-time jobs.

"It's getting closer and closer," said Coach Neal, whose Lawrence High boys basketball team faces No. 2-ranked Acton-Boxboro tomorrow night."

He was talking about his impending retirement as coach. "I keep putting it off. There's always a reason to put it off. But I realize I can't put it off much longer."

The predicament is this: Most school systems frown upon school administrators being coaches. Not only is it a potential conflict of interest, but also department heads have a lot of responsibilities and after-school duties. Neal is an assistant principal at Lawrence High.

The reason the administration has allowed him to continue coaching is that, well, he has been a godsend. He has dedicated countless hours of his life to the basketball program, which is annually one of the most successful at the school. Officials seem to feel Neal is worth looking the other way with the rule book.

Neal's issue is that coaching, for him, is a full-time job. And, of course, there is that other pesky diversion called raising a "family."

"There is no such thing as a part-time job if you coach at Lawrence High," said Neal. "You have to be dedicated to the kids on and off the court. It's hard. It's frustrating at times. I get stressed out. But, man, it can be rewarding."

Contrary to popular belief, Neal is not a basketball junkie. He can't name the top 10 college basketball teams in the country. He's not even sure if the Celtics have a winning or losing record (trick question, they are 17-17).

But basketball, in Lawrence, has allowed him to connect to teenage boys and young men unlike anything else he could imagine.

Buono caps CFL coaching career with league award

Posted: at 7:20 pm

Wally Buono of the Grey Cup-champion B.C. Lions is the Canadian Football League's coach of the year for 2011.

Buono was handed the Annis Stukus Trophy for the fourth time in his 22-year coaching career at a luncheon Friday in Toronto after receiving 45 first-place votes in balloting conducted among 56 voting members of the Football Reporters of Canada.

Paul LaPolice of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Kavis Reed of the Edmonton Eskimos were finalists for the award.

Buono's team opened the season 0-5 and dropped six of its first seven games before rallying to finish tied with Edmonton and Calgary for the league's best record at 11-7.

"It's fitting that as we prepare to celebrate the 100th Grey Cup, we bestow this honour on a true leader who has long epitomized what is best about our league," CFL commissioner Mark Cohon said after presenting Buono with the prestigious award.

"Wally Buono's resume as a head coach ensures he will be remembered alongside the legendary names in CFL history and 2011 may have been the pinnacle of his storied career.

"Wally often tells his players that life is seldom easy, and the greatest rewards are those you have to overcome adversity to achieve," Cohon added. "The Lions' success is 2011 is a testament to his philosophy, character and leadership."

B.C. finished first in the West Division after winning the head-to-head series with both Edmonton and Calgary, then dispatched the Eskimos in the conference final 40-23.

The Lions then capped an improbable championship run by downing Winnipeg 34-23 in the Grey Cup game at B.C. Place.

A week later, Buono stepped down as Lions coach to concentrate full-time on being the club's general manager and vice-president of football operations.
