Patrice Dickey, 56: Taught ‘Get the Life You Love’ at Emory

Posted: at 5:14 am

By Michelle E. Shaw

In her popular Emory University continuing education class, Get the Life You Love, Patrice Dickey taught what she knew.

Her honesty and transparency is likely what endeared students to her and kept them flocking to her class.

Many people can teach a concept but Patrice actually lived what she taught and you come from a very different perspective when you do that, said Peggy Crowe, program manager for Emory Continuing Education. We ran her class three or four times a year and looking back, her message was timeless. We never had a problem filling her class.

Patrice Jane Dickey, of Avondale Estates, died Sept. 7 at Hospice Atlanta, from complications of metastatic breast cancer. She was 56. A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. on Oct. 13 at Oakhurst Presbyterian Church, Decatur. A.S. Turner & Sons was in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Dickey began teaching at Emory in 1999 and continued to teach through the six-week July session this year, even after learning of her advanced medical condition, Mrs. Crowe said.

She was so invested in her students, she said. There were people already registered and she said she wanted to provide them the instruction and experience they were expecting.

In 2006, Ms. Dickey self-published her first book, Back to the Garden: Getting from Shadow to Joy, and her sister, Susan B. Dickey, hopes to posthumously release her second book, which chronicles her cancer journey.

Susan Dickey said her sister didnt necessarily set out to be a writer, but her life experiences gave her great material for the task. Patrice Dickey earned a journalism degree from the University of North Carolina in 1977. Not long after graduation, she made her way to Atlanta, her city of choice, her sister said.

It was the vibe of the city, Susan Dickey said of her sisters decision to move to Atlanta. It is a very cool city.

CSN: Dooling tired of lonely' life, retires from NBA

Posted: September 28, 2012 at 9:14 am

without comments

Keyon Dooling could have continued playing in the NBA.

A wave of surprise hit the league last week when the Boston Celtics announced they had waived Dooling and he would be retiring from the game. Why? Why would a passionate player who loves basketball -- and, just as importantly, the Celtics organization and his teammates -- hang it all up when he had the opportunity to play on a squad he believes will win it all this season?

Sometimes the biggest factors in an athletes life have nothing to do with the sport he or she plays. In this case, Doolings decision to leave the NBA didnt have much to do with basketball at all.

* * * * Laughter bounced off the beige walls of the Dooling household as his loved ones filled the rooms with warmth and happiness. On this particular late September evening, Dooling, his wife Natosha, daughters Deneal (11), Gabrielle (9) and Jordan (5), son Keyon Jr. (2), cousin Kevin (17), brother Cedric Johnson, and godbrother Harry Turner had gathered together. These were the people Dooling had left every few days for a road series. These were the people who had shared his attention with the demanding NBA schedule.

The average career is 4 1/2 years and I tripled that, almost, Dooling told CSNNE.com as he settled into a brown leather chair at the marble high top table in his dining room, his usual three-piece suit traded for a tailored, buttondown shirt and jeans. The grind of the NBA just has taken its toll on me, on my body. More so than that, my family . . . Ive missed birthdays, school conferences, dropping my kids off, school plays, school dances. Ive missed just being daddy so much.

"I have enough. I have all the resources I need, Im a blessed man. Im not limping away; I was able to walk away.

Dooling, the 10th overall pick in the 2000 NBA Draft, contemplated retirement five years ago. Then a member of the Orlando Magic, he underwent tests that revealed a degenerative hip. But at the time he was only 27, too young to stop. Besides, no one wanted him to.

I [thought about retirement] as soon as I found out [about the hip issue], Dooling explained. But I played ball for everybody else, for my family, and I still loved to play. I was still willing to go through that grind. Ive taken medicine, Ive gotten shots, Ive done a lot of things to be able to go out on that court. But I couldnt let my family down. They love to see me play ball.

Doolings career was never about himself. Thats not the way he lives his life. The needs of others have always come first, whether it's a close family member, a teammate, or a distant friend of someone he knows.

His willingness to help those around him made him one of the most accessible players in the NBA. From All-Stars like Dwight Howard and Rajon Rondo to players like Trevor Ariza, Courtney Lee and Jameer Nelson, Dooling -- the first vice-president of the NBA Players Association -- has spent personal time with countless athletes around the league, listening to their stories, offering advice, and providing a shoulder to lean on and a place to turn.

Coaching shake-up at Phoebus was preceded by fight in practice

Posted: at 9:14 am

without comments

A Phoebus football player has been suspended and another was taken to the hospital following a fight during practice Tuesday afternoon, which ultimately led to the removal either temporary or permanent of head coach Stan Sexton.

Sgt. Jason Price, a Hampton police spokesman, said what began as a verbal altercation became physical when "(an) 18-year-old assaulted (a) 16-year-old by punching him one time in the upper torso." Price explained that "upper torso" means above the waist and can include the head.

Price said the 16-year-old was taken to the hospital by a parent with non-life threatening injuries. No charges had been filed as of Thursday, but Price said the incident is still under investigation.

Price was unable to identify the 18-year-old because he has not been charged.

Ann Stephens-Cherry, executive director of public relations with Hampton City Schools, confirmed that a Phoebus football player has been suspended for the next two games "at this point." She would not identify the suspended player.

Jeremy Blunt, who on Wednesday was announced as the Phantoms' acting head coach, also would not reveal the name of the suspended player. He said the players have done their best to move on going into Friday night's game against Bethel.

"Losing a coach and teammates, that's always difficult," Blunt said. "But once they were able to verbalize things that they felt and put it all on the table, the kids refocused their attention on playing football. That was huge to me.

"There are no worries on this end. And more important, there are no worries for the kids. You would see if it they were worried, but they've rallied around each other. Everybody is confident in their jobs and abilities. That was reassuring to me and to the other coaches as well."

Blunt will retain his responsibilities as defensive coordinator. Filling in for Sexton on calling the offensive plays will be assistants Jamar Joel and Carl Winkler.

Phoebus' administration has put the players off-limits for interviews this week.

True-to-Life Sports Comedy 'A League of Their Own' Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Posted: September 25, 2012 at 12:23 am

without comments

According to CBS News, the surviving members of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) reunited this past weekend in New York. As professional athletes enlisted in the armed forces during World War II, chewing gum magnate Philip K. Wrigley formed the AAGPBL to keep baseball alive in America.

Inspired by a documentary produced by Kelly Candaele and Kim Wilson, Penny Marshall directed "A League of Their Own," a bittersweet 1992 sports comedy featuring a strong female cast.

In honor of the film's 20th anniversary, here are 10 lines/quotations that made the story such a major league hit:

Ernie Capadino: "Ever hear of Walter Harvey? Makes Harvey bars, you know the candy?"

Dottie Hinson: "Yeah, we feed them to the cows when they are constipated."

This exchange marked the first meeting between baseball scout Ernie Capadino (Jon Lovitz), Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis), and her kid sister Kit (Lori Petty). Dottie and Kit were milking cows in the barn, which made the sarcastic scout extremely agitated.

Walter Harvey and his candy bars are a tip of the baseball cap to Philip Wrigley and his chewing gum.

Capadino: "You know, if I had your job, I'd kill myself. Sit here and I'll see if I can dig up a pistol."

While waiting for Dottie and Kit on the train, Ernie endures a bragging salesman. Not one to tolerate a fool for long, the scout tosses a high, fast barb and makes a quick exit.

Mae Mordabito: "Boy, that was some good peeing!"

It's not all about the mid-life crisis

Posted: at 12:22 am

Tuesday, Sep. 25, 2012

Finding the solution to a difficult problem lies in asking the right questions. On the afternoon of Sept. 1, in a stylish office building in Aoyama, a gathering of Japanese life coaches practiced this Socratic skill in groups of four. It was a role-playing exercise, in which one person played the role of a client with a problem, and the other three took turns asking questions.

As I walked around the room, I caught snippets of the kind of questions that you often hear in job interviews.

"What do you want to do in four year's time?" one man asked. The "mentee" of the group, a bearded man in his late 40s, silently considered the question.

The activity was part of a conference on the future of the coaching industry, held at the Japan Chapter of the International Coach Federation, one of the largest global accreditation bodies for professional life coaches. It was also an excuse to the celebrate the fifth anniversary of the ICF Japan Chapter, led by Susumu Shinbori, an executive coach with more than 25 years' experience.

Interest in life coaching, which is often described as a training program to help individuals or corporations achieve specific goals, has risen sharply around the world in the last five years. According to figures released by the ICF, there are 47,500 practitioners worldwide with 3,300 based in Asia and the industry has generated $2 billion in total revenue.

In Japan, growth has been more modest than in Western countries, such as the United States, but Janet Harvey, the current president of the International Coach Federation, says that although the numbers are smaller, the rate at which ICF credential holders are increasing here is similar to that of other countries. There are now 120 practitioners with certifications from the ICF in Japan, up from three in 2002.

"Applications for credentials have been doubling every year," added International Coach Federation CEO Magdalena Mook.

While personal coaching has yet to take off in Japan in the same way that it has in the U.S. or Europe, the practice of executive, or business, coaching is fairly well established. More than half of the coaches in attendance at the ICF seminar were business coaches, and most of them have been practicing for nearly a decade.

Katsuhiro Suzuki, a senior manager in the airport quality-control division at ANA, has been an internal coach for more than seven years. He got into coaching about 10 years ago, after undergoing management training in the human resources department.

Longtime coach giving back to hospital

Posted: at 12:22 am

Long time coach Don Rodrigue has taken on new challenges at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center.

Chackbay native Don Rodrigue dedicated 39 years of his life to coaching local football players.

Although he recently retired as a coach, Rodrigue is still giving back to local high schools but in a different capacity.

Rodrigue was hired as a marketing coordinator for the Sports Medicine Center at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center in July.

Rodrigue, who is simply known as Coach Rod in the local football community, helps coordinate fundraising events and community projects for the hospitals sports medicine department, which provides free athletic training care services at local high school sporting events.

Rodrigue said his job is to improve the hospitals relationship with area schools.

I dont do training work, Rodrigue said. The trainers take care of the injuries. My job is to go out and make sure things are smooth. I coordinate with the head coaches and booster clubs and make sure they have everything they need.

Rodrigue spent 39 years as an assistant football coach on both the high school and collegiate levels, serving at local schools such as Nicholls State, St. James, H.L. Bourgeois and Vandebilt Catholic. He retired from coaching at the end of the 2011-12 school year.

The 64-year-old Rodrigue said he had opportunities to continue his coaching career, but when Thibodaux Regional CEO Greg Stock asked him to join the hospital, it was something he couldnt refuse.

So far, its been good, Rodrigue said. Im still involved with high school coaches and school kids. Im just not in a daily coaching job. I want to thank Mr. Stock for giving me the opportunity to do something new and enjoy a new role in my life.
