BLANK screens. Cellphones on the fritz. Wii games sitting dormant in darkened rec rooms. For a swath of teenagers and preteens on the East Coast, the power failures that followed Hurricane Sandy last month represented the first time in their young lives that they were totally off the grid, without the ability to text, play Minecraft, video-chat, check Facebook, or send updates to Twitter.

If they wanted to talk to a friend, they had to do it in person. If their first post-storm instincts were to check a weather app, they resigned themselves to battery-run radios.

As the full scope of the storms damage became obvious, it was clear these inconveniences were hardly grave. And because most children, and adults, eventually found some kind of connection via an unaffected neighbor (or Starbucks), the withdrawal was often more of a tech diet than a total fast.

But the storm provided a rare glimpse of a life lived offline. It drove some children crazy, while others managed to embrace the experience of a digital slowdown. It also produced some unexpected ammunition for parents already eager to curb the digital obsessions of their children.

Early this year, when Michelle Obama revealed rather draconian rules about technology for her daughters (no TV, cellphones or computers during the week except for homework), Pam Abel Davis of South Orange, N.J., used the news to threaten her tech-addled children with Obama-esque regulations. My son in first grade signed a pledge for TV turnoff during the week to win a gold medal, said Ms. Davis, a senior program officer at the Robin Hood Foundation. But it was too much. He said, Mom, lets just go for the silver.

The storm hit Ms. Daviss neighborhood hard but spared her home, which became a charging station for friends of her daughter, Lucy Reynal, 13. Then last Sunday, electricity was shut off while fallen trees were cleared from the road, and within minutes the house emptied out, no longer useful to the teenage power vultures.

Lucy almost had a heart attack when the Wi-Fi went down, until she saw pictures of the devastation all around us, Ms. Davis said. I had just bought a hand-cranked phone charger, thinking it would be a kitschy Hanukkah gift. We were winding it ferociously, sweating and running out of breath.

Hegemony over the car adapter that provided precious power resembled a scene from Lord of the Flies, according to Gail Horwood of Scarsdale, N.Y., an executive at a consumer health care company. Bridget, 15, and Lila, 11, unearthed every ancient defunct flip phone in the familys past and tried to arrange sleepovers where they could recharge. There was a throwback moment: Lila had to study for a test of state capitals, so as the lights were flickering just before the blackout, she found a childhood jigsaw puzzle of the United States. But any resourceful return to old-school methods were not expected to last.

Not a chance, Ms. Horwood said. Its a digital world, and they live in it.

The Zanders of South Salem, N.Y., experienced a blackout last year, so were getting good at the 1800s in our house, said Lauren Handel Zander, who runs an executive life-coaching company. Her three children live for Mommys iPad, she said, likening the first days of the blackout to rehab. Its like coming off drugs, she said. Theres a 48-hour withdrawal until theyre not asking about the TV every other minute.

Softball always has been a major part of Kindra Gregory Palacols life. It took her throughout high school, to college, and now well into her successful career in coaching and teaching.

Palacol now finds herself getting to use two of her passions at Norman North High School, in roles as the assistant fast pitch coach and Algebra I teacher.

I knew growing up that I had a passion for coaching and the only way I could make a profession of that would be to teach as well, she said. This is where I expected my life to go but I never thought that it would work out the way it has. I have grown to trust in God and let His will be done in all that I do.

Palacol was one of nine former athletes to be honored at the 40th Anniversary of Athletics, which was on USAOs campus Nov. 1-3.

The 2007 USAO graduate, secondary math education, spent four years pitching for the Drover softball program. She holds career school records in most wins with 70 and innings pitched with 644.1. Shes also second in most strikeouts thrown with 494.

She decided to play for the Drovers both for the softball program and because of its proximity to her hometown of Lexington.

I chose to come to USAO because I had faith in my coach, Julie Vergenz, who recruited me. I had a trust with her automatically, she said. I would like to thank Julie Vergenz, who helped me grow as a player and a person while I was there.

Palacol said she uses methods she learned at USAO in her career today.

I model a lot of my coaching and teaching after Julie Vergenz, she said. USAO has played a role in my life by helping me to be prepared for my career. I thank all of the professors that taught me so much and helped with my experience to become a better teacher, especially Dr. Nancy Warden. She helped me stick with math.

But the relationship between Palacol and Warden was symbiotic.

Gennaro Gattuso has shared his plans of becoming a coach after his professional career and dismissed claims linking him with a move back to AC Milan.

The 34-year-old joined Swiss side Sion in the summer after deciding to call time on his 13-year association with the Rossoneri, but despite having enjoyed an exceptional career at his former club, he has no intent on returning and hopes to soon begin working on his badges.

"A return to Milan? I certainly wont abandon this ship, the former Italy international told reporters. I gave my word to Sion officials when I came here. I hope to begin a cycle at this club and I dont harbor any nostalgia for home. Switzerland has, after all, a high quality of life.

"It is my objective to become a coach, but only in the future."

During his career, Gennaro Gattuso won the UEFA Champions League two times with Milan and the World Cup 2006 with Italy.

Dear GOP Handlers/Strategists

I know the only reason youre reading something by a life coach is because you want to have a laugh. So go ahead, get that out of your system. Hahaha. What does she know about our business?

The truth is, next to nothing.

But you want to talk people? I know people. I am genius at people. And people vote.

So you can keep reading and maybe have a shot at a presidential election victory in the foreseeable future or you could scoff, move on, and keep taking honorable men, wringing out all their most human qualities and remaking them into candidates who shift with the wind. Your choice.

Lets start here. How, pray tell, did you not win with an American war hero like John McCain representing your party four years ago? Had you let him be quintessential John McCain, warts and all, and not saddled his ticket with a candidate clearly chosen to fill pandering gaps as opposed to strengthen the potential leadership in the White House, things could have been much different.

And now theres Mitt Romney. On looks alone, he had to be a publicists dream. In that department, hes what much of America considers presidential. Hes a family man. He proudly wore the title of grandfather to the Affordable Care Act. His business record is long and distinguished. Asset after asset for the job of applying himself to our economic challenges. A resume a handler can milk for the long haul.

With me so far?

In life coaching we like to focus on the authentic. Oh, geez, youre laughing again. No, I mean it. We want to get people to their authentic selves, not the self others think they should be. They love it once they get going because they feel more at ease and it comes more naturally. We explore What are their gifts? What is at their core? What makes them tick?

The closest I came in the last year to understanding what makes Mitt Romney the person -- tick is a story I read in New York magazine in late September. You know, that left-leaning publication? The article showed me a depth in Romney I hadnt seen before. It painted a portrait of a man embracing other cultures and, in fact, helping them acclimate to ours, one who was hands-on in bringing the unity to community.
