Silent heart attack accounts for over 40% of heart attack cases; know what are the risk factors and signs – Times of India

"A silent heart attack is one where there are minimal symptoms if any suggesting a possible heart attack," says Dr. V. Rajasekhar, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiology & Electrophysiology, Certified Proctor For TAVR & Clinical Director, Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad.

"Also there may be symptoms that may seem innocuous and suggest an alternative diagnosis such as heartburn or indigestion," the expert adds.

A heart attack is called 'silent' when the classic signs of a heart attack like chest pain and pain in the arm and neck are not experienced by the individual.

Many people who have silent heart attacks do not experience the sign.

As per a 2015 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and cited by Harvard Health, a follow up study on almost 2,000 people between 45 to 84 years old, who never had any cardiovascular disease, found that they had a heart attack in 10 years. These people had myocardial scars due to heart attacks.

"Most surprising was that 80% of these people were unaware of their condition. Overall, the prevalence of myocardial scars was five times higher in men than in women," the study found.

"There is no way one can assess the risk of silent heart attack," explains Dr. V. Rajasekhar.

The risk factors for a silent heart attack are the same as for any heart attack such as: diabetes, hypertension, old age, smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, family history of heart disease, high cholesterol, says the expert and adds that older people especially those with diabetes tend to have silent attacks more often.

It is very important to identify the signs of heart attack so that one gets timely medical help which is extremely crucial to save one's life:

Signs like chest pain, discomfort in the chest, feeling weak, fainting, pain in jaw, neck or back, discomfort in arms and shoulders and difficulty in breathing are the classic signs of heart attack.

"Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center or left side of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes or that goes away and comes back. The discomfort can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain," the US CDC explains the nature of the chest pain during heart attack.

While the question seems elusive, the purpose of answering this is because it is a very commonly asked question.

The need of addressing this question is because the majority of heart attacks happen due to unhealthy lifestyle.

Lifestyle habits like less physical activity, random sleeping hours, smoking tobacco, binge drinking, not having sufficient nutritional foods, more dependency on food deliveries and takeaways, eating unhealthy oils and not screening health regularly gives scope to life threatening diseases to progress.

"XBB.1.16 has been reported in 31 countries," the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said in the recent epidemiological update on COVID-19 - 20 April 2023.

The new recombinant variant accounts for 4.2% of the submitted sequences, the UN health agency has said.

XBB.1.16 is behind the current surge of COVID cases in India. A total of 7,178 new COVID cases have been reported in India in the last 24 hours. The daily positivity rate stands at 9.16%.

It is imperative to know the classic COVID symptoms in order to detect the infection early and get tested for it.

The common signs of COVID, as listed by ZOE Health Study which tracked COVID symptoms since the beginning of the pandemic, are: sore throat, runny nose, blocked nose, sneezing, cough without phlegm, headache, cough with phlegm, hoarse voice, muscle aches and pains, and an altered sense of smell.

Apart from the classic signs of COVID which are similar to the symptoms shown by many of the upper respiratory tract infections, there were certain other symptoms of the infection experienced by people which were remotely related to the respiratory infection.

Symptoms like loose motion, abdominal discomfort, fatigue, rashes, dry mouth and back pain were seen in people during the second wave of COVID infection which was led by the Delta variant of the coronavirus; this wave is said to be the devastating wave of COVID and had originated in India.

Changes in skin color and texture seen in few COVID patients raised several questions around the nature of the virus. COVID toes, as they are popularly referred to, was seen in kids and young people mostly. It is discoloration of the toes and fingers along with itchiness, blisters and rough skin.

The impact of COVID on the brain health of an individual is not unknown now. Brain fog is a very common long COVID symptom and many people who had COVID have experienced it for weeks and months.

The occurrence of brain fog or confusion does not depend on the severity of the infection which means even those who had a mild COVID infection can be at a risk of it.

With the dominance of XBB.1.16 variant a new symptom, pink eye or conjunctivitis, is being seen in kids this time.

Conjunctivitis is remotely connected to COVID; though it is one of the many symptoms of COVID, the rate of incidence of this sign was not common in earlier waves of COVID.

Currently, health experts are urging people to get tested for COVID and for this knowing the signs of this infection is extremely infectious.

Newer variants of the coronavirus are emerging regularly and a big question is whether it increases the risk of severity.

"Due to its estimated growth advantage and immune escape characteristics, XBB.1.16 may spread globally and contribute to an increase in case incidence. However, at present, there is no early signal of an increase in severity," the WHO has said in a recent report.

Have you opened your windows and checked the weather? Its officially spring in Minnesota, and that means the start of race season. While many local Muslim girls want to play sports, the lack of modest, inclusive activewear can make it more challenging to participate.

Girls on the Run Minnesota aims to address that issue, recently donating pants, running shoes, andthanks to a partnership with Minneapolis-based, Muslim woman-owned business Kalsonisports hijabs to hundreds of local school-aged girls so they can participate in spring races. The season concludes with a non-competitive 5K at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds on June 2. Other regional events include a 5K in Rochester on June 3 and in Duluth on June 4.

There has never been a greater need for the resources, lessons and activities that Girls on the Run provides, says Kathleen Cannon, executive director of Girls on the Run Minnesota, in a media release. The trauma and social isolation of the last few years have taken their toll on Minnesota girls. Thats one of many reasons were committed to helping girls connect with each other and with trusted adults through a fun, positive program that inspires them to move their bodies, express their feelings, and develop strong friendships.

Over the comings weeks, 175 teams of third- through eighth-grade girlsor more than 3,000 students and 700 volunteer coacheswill meet twice a week to inspire girls of all abilities to recognize their individual strengths while building a sense of connection in a team setting, according to the Girls on the Run website. And adequate activewear allows all students to confidently and safely train to race.

Volunteers from Marketing Lab and U.S. Bank helped deliver the items to over 100 schools..

We want everyone involved to feel a sense of belonging, to be part of the team, and to not have to worry about what theyre wearing, Cannon says.

Despite fasting during the Muslim holy month, Mariam stuck to her intense training for a weight lifting competition several months away

Guess my age? Mariam Gathuo asks after arriving two minutes late for our interview at the Alpha Fit Gym off Ngong Road.

Thirty-seven, I place a bet as we stride across the lawned front yard away from the gym noise for a spot to get candid.

The weight lifter is rocking a black hijab, an oversized white t-shirt branded Uzani Weight Lifting conceals her blue gym tights.

Her face glows like a molten iron rod even with the sweat dripping from her brow.

Mmh! Nice guess. I am actually 42, the mother of five says as we pick our spots under some shade.

Gathuo is training for a weightlifting competition Uzani Power Weekend 5 scheduled for August 19, 2023.

Its been a year since she started weightlifting. The happily divorced -as she puts it, is also a fitness instructor at Alpha Fit.

Despite the competition being miles away, Mariam's training schedule never stopped during the holy month of Ramadhan which came to an end last Friday.

Everybody else is training for the competition, why would I stop? Fasting can never be my excuse not to train or work out. Its all about how you fine-tune your mindset. Once I lock it, I am good to go she says.

I point out to her that staying away for a month to observe the holy month wouldnt do much damage considering the dates of the competition.

Most of her Muslim clients shunned the gym when Ramadhan began but she is now expecting them back much heavier than they left.

Ramadhan is the most sacred month in the Islamic calendar in which Muslims restrain themselves from food and drink from dawn to dusk.

The restrictions on eating and drinking during Ramadhan pose a challenge to Muslim athletes and those who keep fit if they want to continue pounding out the weights.

Mariam must eat her Suhoor (meal eaten early in the morning before dawn) before 5:45 am. Iftar (a meal taken at sundown to break the daily fast) comes nearly 13 hours later.

You must eat the right foods during Suhoor to sustain your body during the day. Another important measure is, you need to keep hydrating between Iftar and Suhoor because when you train during the day, you lose the water and wont be replenishing it anytime soon.

During Ramadhan, her days began like any other, kicking the blanket at 3:55 am after six hours of sleep.

Immediately I wake up I drink a litre of lukewarm water to help cleanse my gut and replenish my electrolytes. At a quarter to five, I will do tea and bread, a meal I love so much. The most I can do is have leftovers, mostly when it's rice.

Mariam will then wait for the Alfajr prayers and by 5:30 am she is out of the house. It takes 30 minutes from where she resides to Alpha Fit situated at the tail end of Ligi Ndogo playing ground.

My first client always gets to the gym by 6 am.

She will see more clients up to around 11:30 am and then start her individual workouts which last for an hour or two.

Despite fasting, her sessions are always intense, especially when there is a competition involved such as the August one.

The first week of Ramadhan, you do moderation as your body adjusts to the unexpected stress its being subjected to. Once it settles in, you pick the rhythm and go hard.

During Iftar, Mariam will start again by hydrating and gulping half a litre of water.

Drinking that much water at ago makes one too full and unable to eat. I sip slowly, continuously over a period of time. This way, I drink up to a litre and a half and still eat.

Her balanced diet consists of a lot of vegetables.

Vegetables are very important because the body needs those vitamins more than anything to function so I consume a lot of those. Chicken, rice, ugali are also my favourites but I would also encourage people to eat lots of dates, for energy and fibre.

She has also been taking multivitamin supplements during Ramadhan to supplement those that are fetched from whole meals.

I used to belong to the school of thought that supplements are harmful and shouldnt be taken, but not anymore. If you are doing intense workouts your body will always be deficient in minerals and thats where supplements come in. Besides, how often do you eat chicken or meat, this is where supplements come in to ensure your body never lacks the required proteins and minerals.

The fitness instructor doesnt eat junk of any nature, not even in small quantities.

Those are toxins that will only ruin your body. There is an entire buffet of organic whole meals to choose from. There is also no such thing as cheat days, thats rubbish.

The sweat has now dried up and after 20 minutes of talking, Mariam shows the urge of going back to finish her sets.

How did she start her fitness journey?

Do you work out? She catches me off-guard.

Of course, I do, albeit not as consistently as I should. I told her of how an ex-girlfriend dumped me because I was fat because I couldnt do many things and thats how I ended up paying for my first gym subscription.

Thats sad. My situation is different. Twelve years ago I fell ill and it was found out that I had a problem with my liver which ended up affecting my gall bladder and it had to be removed. To help me improve my health, exercise was then prescribed by the doctor and that marked my journey to fitness which was a struggle in the beginning.

When she gave birth to her firstborn daughter, now 21 years old, arthritis attacked her and exercise was prescribed.

The ongoing row over several branded health drinks which moms have been trusting for decades has made us think, are we feeding our kids the right kind of food?Although the majority of brands advertise these products as "energy and vitamin-rich drinks," but on the other hand they dont mention the heavy quantity of sugar used in them which can be very harmful for kids, says Dr Saurabh Khanna, Lead Consultant, Neonatology and Pediatrics, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram.These products are promoted as immunity boosters and make tall claims that these will help kids in growing tall and strong, he says and adds, but in reality, energy drinks and such health drinks cannot increase immunity; this can be only done by immunisations / vaccinations.What are the ingredients parents should check before buying them?Dr Khanna explains: As per the recommendation of the nutritionist or pediatrician depending on the condition or deficiency of a particular nutrient which otherwise is unavailable to the child through dietary intake, one may be recommended the supplements (through energy drinks).

Parents should look out for high sugar content in the drink. Proteins, vitamins, minerals, DHA etc are certain ingredients which help in overall growth of the child, and should be used only for a short while until the child starts taking these through their diet.

Natural alternatives for kids other than health drinks

What are the complications likely to come when these drinks are given to kids regularly?

Dr Khanna highlights three important complications that might arise when such health drinks are regularly fed to a child.

These drinks include a lot of processed sugars, and excessive intake of these on a regular basis might raise the risk of diabetes and obesity in kids, he adds.

As per Unicef's World Obesity Atlas for 2022, India is likely to be home to 27 million obese kids by 2030. It currently ranks 99 out of 183 countries in terms of handling the economic impact of obesity.

Children who skip meals and miss out on the nutrients they need may feel full after drinking these drinks, which might have an impact on their growth and development. Kids can also get addicted to sweet and chocolate flavors of these drinks if consumed on a regular basis, explains Dr Khanna.

Masoor dal is brimming with iron and many essential nutrients. This makes it crucial for increasing hemoglobin levels and preventing lethargy and exhaustion. Here are three incredible recipes using this classic Indian ingredient.

Ingredients

For Filling

3/4 cup finely chopped mint leaves (pudina) leaves3/4 cup whole masoor (whole red lentil)2 tsp ginger-green chilli paste1/2 cup grated low-fat paneer (cottage cheese)2 tbsp whole wheat bread crumbs1/4 cup finely chopped carrots

1/4 cup finely chopped spring onions whites1/4 cup finely chopped coriander (dhania)2 tsp oilsalt to taste

For yogurt blend

2 tbsp dill leaves (suva bhaji)2 tbsp low fat milk , (99% fat free)1/4 cup low-fat curds (dahi)2 pinches mustard (rai / sarson) powdersalt to taste

For wraps4 rotis8 tbsp garlic-tomato chutney1 cup roughly torn lettuce4 tbsp finely chopped and blanched carrot

Clean, wash and soak the masoor overnight.Drain, add 2 cups of water and pressure cook for 2 to 3 whistles till the masoor is soft and slightly overcooked, but not mashed.Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.Drain the masoor completely and coarsely mash it with a potato masher.Add the mint leaves, ginger-green chilli paste and bread crumbs, mix well and keep aside.Heat the oil in a non-stick pan, add the spring onion whites and saut till they turn translucent.Add the carrots, coriander, masoor mixture and salt and cook on a medium flame for 2 minutes, while stirring continuously.Place a roti on a clean, dry surface, then top it with 2 tablespoons of the garlic tomato chutney.In the middle of the roti, arrange 1/4 cup of lettuce and 1/4 cup of the mint and masoor filling in a row.Spread 1/4 of the yoghurt dill over 1 tablespoon of the carrots, then tightly roll it up.To make 3 more rolls, repeat the process with the remaining components.Each roll should be served right away after being wrapped in tissue paper.

Ingredients3/4 cup whole masoor (whole red lentil)2 tsp ginger-green chilli paste3/4 cup finely chopped mint leaves (pudina) leaves1/2 cup grated low fat paneer (cottage cheese)2 tbsp brown bread crumbssalt to taste2 tsp oil for cooking

Clean, wash, and soak the masoor.Masoor should be soft and slightly overcooked but not mashed after being drained, added to 2 cups of water, and pressure cook for 2 to 3 whistles.Open the lid after letting the steam out.Remove the water from the masoor and throw it away. Use a potato masher to coarsely crush the masoor.Mix thoroughly before adding the other ingredients.The mixture should be divided into 16 equal pieces. Each piece should be formed into a little, long, flat tikki.Each tikki should be cooked on a heated non-stick tava (griddle) over a medium flame with 1/8 teaspoon oil until both sides are golden brown. Satay sticks should be inserted through each tikki. Serve warm.

For The Masala Masoor1/2 cup masoor (whole red lentil) , soaked for 1-2 hours3/4 cup chopped tomatoes1/2 cup chopped onions1/2 cup potato cubes2 apricots, soaked and finely chopped3 tbsp red chilli-garlic paste1 tbsp chopped raisins (kismis)2 1/2 cups cooked rice (chawal)2 tbsp milk1 tbsp oilsalt to taste

Clean, wash, and soak the masoor for at least one to two hours in enough water. Melt the masoor down. While stirring continually, set aside.In a pressure cooker, heat the oil, add the onions, and saut them while continuously stirring until they turn brown in colour.While continuously stirring, add the red chili-garlic paste and continue to saut for a few more seconds.One whistle of pressure cooking is required after adding the potatoes, tomatoes, apricots, raisins, masoor, salt, and 1 14 cups of water.Open the lid after letting the steam out.If it is watery, cook it until just a small amount of moisture remains and the mixture is semi-dry. Set apart.Separate the masala masoor into 2 equal portions and the rice into 3 equal portions.One portion of the rice should be distributed evenly in an oiled glass baking dish.One portion of the masala masoor should be spread over it.Over the masala masoor, distribute the remaining rice in an equal layer. To add another layer, repeat steps 2 and 3 once more.Cover with aluminium foil and bake for 10 minutes at 200C (400F) or for 2 minutes in the microwave. Make cautious to avoid using aluminium foil in the microwave because it could ignite. Instead, use a lid made for microwaves.Just before serving hot, flip over on a sizable serving platter. Coriander is a good garnish.

Mindy Kaling is currently living her best life while on vacation in Hawaii. The Mindy Project star, 43, has been posting tons of amazing fashion inspo from the trip on Instagram, and Mindy even shared the mirror selfie on her Instagram Story where she's posing in an adorable A.L.C. floral two-piece matching set. The cute 'fit was accessorized by her super strong, toned arms and a peek of her abs.

"@halliesand wore this @alc_ltd and I told to her face, 'I'm wearing that on our Hawaii vacation'. And she said sure!" she captioned the pic.

If you're wondering what Mindy's workouts and wellness routines look like these days, you should know that she is a big fan of walking. She even shared with TODAY that she tries to get out for a walk every day of the week.

Sometimes Ill be like, Well, I have four different times today where I have 10 minutes so lets just walk instead of sitting down and checking Instagram,'" Mindy said. So instead of it being like one chunk of exercise in the beginning of the day or none at all, Im now just deciding that Im going to be a more active person all the time.

Here's Mindy sharing some BTS from one of her recent solo walks in Malibu on Instagram.

When she wants to mix things up, Mindy told Women's Health that she likes to go on a jog or hit some yoga flow in the morning. She also told SELF about her exercise routine: I refuse to let it get monotonous, she said. I do any trendy workout.

For Mindy, that includes vibration plate classes and Pilates reformer classes.

Mindy also explained on TODAY that she has changed the way she approaches exercise over the years. In my 20s, I thought a workout had to be something that was punishing, like 45 minutes of running and you had to hate it the whole time, she said. I dont have that relationship with exercise anymore.

Oh, and Mindy isn't into using a scale. I dont weigh myself. To me, the most amazing thing is that all my clothes kind of fit/ Its so easy to get ready and that's great. I feel happy about that, she told TODAY.

As for her diet, Mindy is big on hydration. She told Women's Health that she drinks 50 ounces of water before 7 a.m. everyday. And she also makes herself a green smoothie that she describes is "basically the equivalent of an enormous salad," made with spinach, banana, kale, lemon, pear, a bit of apple, cucumber, celery, and coconut water or tap water. Lunch is usually a turkey sandwich, a small steak or tandoori chicken that she'll pair with a couple of Indian sides. She keeps it light for dinner, and often opts for fish with a side of grains and veggies.

Plus, she has a sweet tooth. Mindy told WH that some of her favorite sweets include a handful of chocolate chips or nuts, Australian red licorice (her favorite candy), or gummy worms.

Mindy has previously said she approached award show diets in an unhealthy way, but these days, she's all about moderation. I'm never going stop being a foodie. Im never going be someone who can just have spinach and salmon every day, she shared on TODAY. I just am really for the first time in my life, trying moderation, and I love it."
