Washington Restaurants and Bars Are Being Ordered Closed to Help Stem the Spread of the Coronavirus – seattlebusinessmag.com

Posted: at 10:41 am

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee plans to issue an emergency proclamation on Monday, March 16, that will temporarily shut down restaurants, bars and recreational facilities statewide and prohibit all gatherings of more than 50 people as part of a growing dragnet aimed at limiting the deadly reach of the coronavirus.

Restaurants will be allowed to provide take-out and delivery services, but no in-persondining will be permitted, Inslee said in announcing his planned emergency order Sunday evening, March 15.The ban will not apply to grocery stores and pharmacies. Other retail outlets will have reduced occupancy.

Inslee added that any gatherings under 50 participants will be prohibited as well, unless criteria for public health and social distancing are met. King County decided to implement the order immediately Sunday evening, according to Inslee.

These orders prohibit all gatherings with 50 or more people, and require dance halls, clubs, theaters, health and fitness clubs, and other similar indoor social or recreational venues to cease operations, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan said in a statement about the new order.

After sighting a study indicating that by early April up to 25,000 people in the Puget Sound region could be infected by the coronavirus (COVID-19), with 400 dying, absent serious measures being taken, Durkan offered these observations in an email press release related to the impact on the affected businesses:

I have talked with Vice President Pence, our federal delegation and Governor Inslee to speed up meaningful relief for those already impactedWe also continue to partner with business and philanthropyto build more programs for impacted workers and families, Durkan said in announcing the order. As a city, we are supporting our small businesses who are impacted by this crisis by deferring payment on business taxes and utilities, setting up a Small Business Stabilization Fund and ensuring our small businesses can access federal assistance through the Small Business Administration as soon as it becomes available.

We will continue to build on these measures by using every possible local, state, federal and private resource to support small businesses, workers and families, Durkan added. Ultimately, we know we will need an unprecedented small business and worker-relief package from Congress. Congress must think bigger and bolder for a long-term economic relief package to help the people and businesses who already feel the real consequences of this global pandemic.

Visit Seattle and Washington State Convention Center officials report that the economic cost to of canceled client convention-center bookings in March alone resulted in a $20 million loss in economic impact. Washington Gov. Jay Inslees past announcedprohibition against public gatherings of 250 or more, now narrowed to 50 or more with the current announcement, puts at risk in April and May an additional $89 million which is the estimated combined economic impact of events and meetings already booked at the downtown convention center.

Illinois health department expands coronavirus testing guidelines | Health, Medicine and Fitness – Journal Gazette and Times-Courier

Posted: at 10:41 am

without comments

As commercial- and hospital-based testing for the new coronavirus becomes more available, state guidance for doctors treating suspected patients has widely expanded the pool of who can be tested.

New guidelines allow for testing people who live in nursing homes or other congregate living facilities, patients deemed to be public health concerns after being evaluated by medical professionals, hospitalized patients with unexplained respiratory problems, and people at higher risk of complications for whom a rapid diagnosis would benefit their treatment.

The newest guidelines for health care providers were released Friday by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Early testing targeted those people most at risk, and it remains true that not everyone who wants a test can get one. Early on, a health care provider could seek a state laboratory test for people who were symptomatic, had contact with a known patient and if other illnesses had been ruled out.

After officials found their first case of community spread, meaning they confirmed a coronavirus case but couldnt find a link to a previous patient, the guidance changed again, dropping the contact-with-prior-patient requirement but limiting tests to those who were severely ill.

Q&A: What the pandemic declaration means | Health and Fitness – Lincoln Journal Star

Posted: at 10:41 am

without comments

The last disease the WHO declared a pandemic was a new flu strain, initially called "swine flu," in 2009. That decision came after the new H1N1 flu had been spreading in multiple countries for about six weeks. Today, that strain is what's known as "endemic" worldwide it became part of every season's regular flu outbreak.

This is the first time this kind of virus a coronavirus has been labeled a pandemic, "but at the same time, we believe that it will be the first also to be able to be contained or controlled," Tedros said.

OUTBREAK? EPIDEMIC? PANDEMIC? WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

An outbreak is a sudden rise in cases of a disease in a particular place. An epidemic is a large outbreak. A pandemic means a global epidemic.

Experts point out that the word "pandemic" is sure to reverberate, even though many people may not understand what it means.

"The word hasn't been suitably explained and made clear," said Ian Mackay, who studies viruses at Australia's University of Queensland. "It has been kept in a drawer and only used at the worst time. So, of course people have fear of it."

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN ABOUT THE DISEASE'S SEVERITY?

Pandemic is a scary word but it has nothing to do with how serious the illness is. It just means a disease is spreading widely. There can be pandemics of mild illness, like that H1N1 flu turned out to be in 2009.

6 False Fitness and Workout Myths You Need to Stop Believing – menshealth.com

Posted: at 10:41 am

without comments

If you get most of your health and fitness knowledge online, it can be tough to know what's real and what's just bluster. Some of the false claims you'll find are harmless. But if you're following bad intel, in the best case scenario your gains might sufferin the worst, you might be in line for an injury.

Time to debunk Instagram bro-science and other internet BS to help you see better results, faster. Let's put these zombie myths in their graves for good.

THE MYTH: You may think the ache and tightness you feel a day or two after youve blasted a muscle, technically known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), is a gym badge of honor. First described in 1902, its sometimes a result of muscle-fiber micro tears that occur as you lift. New to training? These can spur growth. But more damage doesnt equal more growth, says Andy Galpin, Ph.D., C.S.C.S.*D, an associate professor of exercise physiology at California State University, Fullerton: On a scale of 1 to 10, pushing yourself to a level 7 of soreness might stimulate some growth, or it might not.

YOUR MOVE: Track your workouts based strictly on effectiveness. Choose key exercises (e.g., the squat, the pushup, and the pullup) and do them at least once a week. If youre improving your reps, form, or weight on these movements on a monthly basis, youre on the right track, even if youre only mildly sore.

THE MYTH: Exercise scientists long divided muscle fibers into two categories: slow-twitch fibers, the kind that get you through a marathon, and fast-twitch fibers, the ones that power a dunk. Decades ago, researchers believed their distribution was genetic, so no training could turn a skinny, slow-twitch distance runner into a muscular sprinter (or vice versa). A landmark 2018 study, coauthored by Galpin, of identical twinsone sedentary and one a lifelong distance runnerchanged that. Thanks to miles of running, the active brothers muscles were almost entirely slow-twitch. The sedentary brothers? Fifty-fifty split between fast- and slow-twitch, which is what happened because he didnt train at all. Translation: You can work toward dunking a basketball.

YOUR MOVE: To build total-body function, resilience, and overall health, include both fast- and slow-twitch exercises in every workout. Lead with a fast-twitch move, like an explosive bench press. End with slow exercises, like rows in which you take three seconds to lower the weight.

THE MYTH: It seems logicalworking out burns calories, so to burn more calories, just work out more. Except thats not what researchers at New Yorks Hunter College found when studying the Hadza, northern Tanzanian hunter-gatherers. The Hadza got about four times as much exercise as an averageAmerican, yet they burned virtually the same number of calories. Heres why: Exercise pushes your body to burn calories, but theres a cutoff point, one thats different for every person. Approach that cutoff in your workout and your body starts burning far fewer calories, instead possibly shutting down certain functionslike building new muscle tissueto operate efficiently.

YOUR MOVE: If youre trying to maintain a calorie deficit, calculate that over the course of a week, not a day. This allows you to have cheat days. And schedule workouts so that youre consistently burning calories. If you want to burn a few extra, dont make your workout longer. Just spend the last ten minutes doing high-intensity interval training.

THE MYTH: An isolation exercise works just one muscle (think biceps curl). But the rise of CrossFit convinced most trainers that you dont need moves like that. Why do a curl when you can squat or deadlift? These moves use more muscles, so wouldnt they build real-world strength?

Not so, according to a recent review of research on the leg extension. The weighted leg extension is simple, asking you to straighten your knee. But a Tufts University study found that doing just that still increased the walking speed of elderly men by almost 50 percent. Even isolation exercises recruit stabilizing muscles if done correctly.

YOUR MOVE: Turn every move, whether a squat or an isolation move like a skull-crusher, into a full-body move by starting with three steps: Flex your abs, squeeze your glutes, and tighten your shoulder blades.

THE MYTH: The biggest guys in your gym are the ones lifting the most weight. So youve got to go heavy, right? A Brazilian study published in PLOS One indicates its not that simple. Scientists had young men do sets of either 7 to 9 reps or 21 to 36 reps. The first group lifted more weight, but both of the groups showed similar muscle growth. Should you lift heavy sometimes? Definitely. But if youre feeling beat, you wont lose any muscle (and you just might gain some) by ditching heavy bench presses for pushups.

YOUR MOVE: Try varying your rep ranges every few weeks, says action-star trainer Don Saladino, NASM. For 2 weeks, do 12 to 15 reps per set; for the next 2 weeks, do 8 to 10 reps per set; and for the final 2 weeks, do 4 to 6 reps per set. The body needs to train with a variety of rep ranges, says Saladino.

THE MYTH: Gyms sell protein shakes because bro-science states theres a 30-minute post workout anabolic window for protein. Part of this is true: You need protein. If youre chasing muscle, you require about 0.7 to 1 gram of it per pound of bodyweight daily.

The easiest way to consume that is in three to five small mealsan after-lift shake makes sense. But according to a Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition review, your muscles are primed for protein within three to four hours of your workout.

YOUR MOVE: Focus on your daily protein intake by eating those three to five small meals. Funny thing about that: Youll likely eat protein within the three- to four-hour anabolic win-dow before or after your lift.

Explaining more about the five pillars of fitness – Royal Gazette

Posted: at 10:41 am

without comments

Published Mar 18, 2020 at 8:00 am (Updated Mar 18, 2020 at 8:07 am)

Correct approach: Dre Hinds suggests you practise the five pillars of fitness to give your body the perfect workout (Photograph supplied)

So many times Ive been asked which type of fitness training is most important. Truthfully, once you find something that you enjoy, thats all that matters.

Of course, you can play around and try many styles; within the gym, I do believe there are important steps you should take before picking up heavy weights.

At HindsSight we focus on five pillars of fitness:

1, Core

Now when Im talking core, I dont mean the aesthetically pleasing six-pack (which is simply just absence of fat and not an indication of strength). Core is your entire midsection, including your back muscles and muscles around your pelvis. When you have a strong core, the foundation of our fitness, you can easily move in any direction with proper balance and stability.

A strong core prevents falls, and supports your body in every position, and without a strong core you may find it difficult to run with control, sit up straight at work, or even squat heavier. Your strong core, once engaged, will assist you during your heavy lifts, long runs and in maintaining proper posture and positioning.

2, Cardio

Having a great relationship with your lungs and heart is another vital strength to have. In completing cardio exercise you are training your heart and making it stronger, making it work less to pump blood. Furthermore, your lung capacity improves.

There is also a positive relationship between cardiovascular endurance and building muscle. Once your cardiovascular system is working more efficiently, there will be an improved oxygen circulation within your muscles, which leads to muscle growth. Of course, having a balanced fitness regime will get you the results you want (less cardio, more weights or more cardio, less weights, yielding different results).

3, Body-weight exercise

Now that Ive mentioned it, weightlifting - yes, my love! But before we touch on that, lets talk body weight exercise. Mastering your body weight and learning how your body moves through space is important. It wouldnt be smart to squat 100lb on your back if you havent mastered a body-weight squat.

The benefits of body-weight exercise improve your cardiovascular endurance and your muscle strength, both important improvements before moving on to weightlifting. Yes, weightlifting. Ill try not to be too biased, but it is so important. I believe everyone can benefit from lifting weights or some form of resistance training.

4, Weightlifting

Having improved your core, cardiovascular system and body- weight exercise you can add weightlifting to your fitness regime. It isnt just about bulking up. Weightlifting further improves your posture, promotes better sleeping patterns and, most importantly, it helps to increase bone density which combats disease.

A strong core, great cardiovascular endurance, body weight exercise, weightlifting thats four pillars.

5, High Intensity Interval Training

The fifth pillar is what we call High Intensity Interval Training. Basically, combine all of the four pillars into a circuit style of training. By combining all four pillars you are benefiting from all four, improving in every aspect and, of course, getting fitter, losing fat and becoming a better athlete. Although HIIT is better with little rest, the circuit style of training is most important when combining all four pillars. It keeps things interesting as well.

Once you become a student of your own body, you will notice improvements in your fitness, health and wellness. All the information in the world will do nothing for you unless you apply it.

Learn your body, know your strengths and work on your weaknesses. The five pillars are a great way to do a self-check on your fitness journey. Until next time, be honest with your efforts and remember to remain unapologetic about how you choose to be fit and healthy.

Coronavirus shutdowns: Whats open, whats closed in Massachusetts? – MassLive.com

Posted: at 10:41 am

without comments

In an effort to curb the spread of coronavirus, Massachusetts school, businesses and government buildings have been shut down.

Some are closed for weeks. Others will feature modified hours and operations.

Sign up for free text messages about important updates on coronavirus in Massachusetts

Below is a list of coronavirus-related closures in Massachusetts. Hours and operations can change quickly, so check back for updates and call ahead to verify hours of operation and status.

Daycare

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker announced an order Sunday to restricting gathering of 25 people or more. That order does not apply to childcare facilities for children, officials confirmed to MassLive. However, some daycare facilities are closed by management. Check with your provider for details.

K-12 Schools

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker ordered all K-12 school closed for three weeks effective on Tuesday, until at least April 6. The closure does not apply to residential and day programs for students with special needs.

Schools must suspend in-person educational operations and staff should be planning on how to provide learning opportunities during this period and beyond.

Colleges and Universities

The governor recommended all Massachusetts colleges and universities keep students off campus and offer online learning. The majority of colleges in Massachusetts announced remote learning plans and either extended spring breaks to keep students off campus or announced plans to move students off campus.

United States Postal Service

The postal service will continue with normal operations as long as their workers can safely serve their communities - with some limitations.

The Postal Service is taking this health threat seriously, but we also intend to act calmly and consistently based upon the advice of medical and public health professionals, Postmaster General Megan J. Brennan said last week.

Customers sending or receiving mail from China can expect delays and priority mail express international for mail destined for China or Hong Kong has been suspended.

Private mail services - including FedEx, UPS and Amazon Prime - are continuing to deliver packages though warning that customers living in regions seriously impacted by coronavirus may experience delays. Amazon reported a significant increase in orders which has resulted in longer delivery times for standard and Amazon Pantry orders.

Federal courts

Federal courts are individually coordinating with state and local health officials to obtain local information about the coronavirus (COVID-19), and some have issued orders relating to court business, and public and employee safety.
