Terra’s Secret Revealed as Deathstroke’s Titans Team Assembles – CBR (blog)

Posted: July 6, 2017 at 12:48 pm

without comments

SPOILER WARNING: This issue contains spoilers for Deathstroke #21, on sale now.

After spending the bulk of last issue in a gathering the team excercise for the series new status quo, Priest and artist Diogenes Neves devote Deathstroke #21 to gathering the team, albeit from a few different angles. Agendas are revealed, mysteries deepened, and the sincerity of Slade Wilsons conversion is called into question. But perhaps the biggest revelation comes on the final page, where Defiances missing member makes her debut.

It sure looks like Terra is a double agent. Again.

This issue, like most of Priests run on the title so far, is broken up into segments delineated by a word or phrase in an all-black panel. Here, the marker is the character or characters in focus for the scene. The opener is dedicated to the League of Assassins Willow, who executes a genocidal butcher known as the Grocer. Its unclear, though, how she fits into the series will she join Deathstrokes team Defiance? Oppose them? Or simply complicate things?

RELATED: Titans #11 Finally Brings the Flash Face-to-Face with [SPOILER]

From there, were on more solid footing as Adeline, Slades ex-wife and the mother of his sons, takes center stage. Adeline and Slade did not part amicably, as recounted in this issue the former Mrs. Wilson shot Deathstroke in the eye after holding him responsible for their son Grants death and in retaliation for his reunion with Rose, his daughter from outside of their marriage. (Addie doesnt put things quite so kindly.) Now, though, shes ready to lead Project Defiance as a secret government initiative, with Deathstroke reporting directly to her.

Deathstroke goes along with it sort of.

The next section, Wally and Tanya, brings a moment of levity to the issue, while also giving a pretty intriguing look at what drives these characters, their similarities and differences. Wally West Kid Flash asks Tanya Spears, aka Power Girl, what grade shes in. A perfectly reasonable question, given their similar ages. I have two PhDs, she replies. Tanya also recaps her origin story, noting that her mentor Karen Starr, the original Power Girl, left Tanya her name, powers, and access to her technology empire, when Ms. Starr returned to her own Earth.

This is worth noting because, in the shifting sands of post-Rebirth continuity, the status of Earth 2 is still a huge question. In the New 52 universe still in many ways the operative timeline Earth 2 was an alternate reality in which a war with Apokalips brought the planet to its knees, and the world was only saved through the heroic sacrifices of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Eventually, this version of Earth was destroyed, though its heroes found and colonized a new planet in the aftermath of Convergence. But in pre-Flashpoint continuity, which is stridently reasserting itself elsewhere in the DCU, Earth 2 was home to the Justice Society and other Golden Age originals, of which the classic version of Jay Garrick, Earth 2s Flash, recently made an appearance in the Batman/Flash crossover The Button. In both continuities, Karen Starr was originally from Earth 2 before emigrating to Earth 1. Tanyas statement here suggests that Power Girls repatriation which occurred in the New 52 definitely took place; the question now is, from the current point of view, which Earth 2 she returned to.

Later, in the issues final scene, Adeline reveals that the black kids were not part of her plan for the team, which could lead to an interesting dynamic when loyalties are tested. Its also worth noting that Kid Flash and Power Girl, the only unambiguously heroic members of Defiance, are also the only ones without a deep-seated hatred for Deathstroke.

His kids, for example, certainly bear a grudge.

In the Jericho and Rose scene, the half-siblings debate whether or not Deathstroke killed Jerichos fiance tienne, and both agree that yeah, probably he did. Jericho maintains some doubt though, and states that learning the truth is my only motivation for joining Pops team.

Slade, meanwhile, is taking his mentorship of a new generation of heroes very seriously. First, in the Slade chapter, he scours news reports for a world crisis suitable for testing Defiances mettle. He finally finds it, oddly enough, in recognizing the chauffeur of a small nations president as a former notorious drug kingpin. Though there is a contract out on the man, Deathstroke executes him on the house, and in so doing sets off an international incident. Now call in Defiance!

But of course the twist comes in Wintergreen, the final chapter, where we learn that Slades not-always-trusty confidant is conspiring with Adeline to end Deathstroke forever. Wintergreen and Adeline also implicate themselves in tiennes death by noting that they both know that Deathstroke was not responsible.

And then, theres the final page reveal of Terra. Who not only has the stomach for a little back-stabbing, as Adeline puts it, but is positively eager to dive in.

Though Terra has appeared in a variety of Titans-related series through the years, the conflicted earth-powered characteris most famous for her role in the Marv Wolfman and George Perez classic The Judas Contract, where she charmed her way into the Teen Titans before revealing herself as a spy for Deathstroke. That story arc also strongly suggested that Slade and the underage Terra were engaged in a sexual relationship. Early in his run on the current Deathstroke series, Priest had said he would clear up once and for all the truth of Slade and Terras relationship, which he said would take place in a crossover with Teen Titans. Plans clearly changed, as Terra did not even appear in that recently-concluded crossover, but perhaps that story is coming soon.

At any rate, that Terra would feature in the Defiance lineup was never a secret; shes right there on the cover, after all. But her role as saboteur is a twist. Of course, nothing is ever straightforward in Deathstrokes world, where rival assassins are always thinking five moves ahead; its entirely possible that Slade recruited Terra before Wintergreen and Adeline even had the chance.

That unknowability goes a long way toward elevating the tension and excitement of Deathstroke. What is Slade up to, really? Can he prevail over his adversaries? Should we even want him to? Hes smart enough not to trust his ex, surely; but what does he know? And of course, what are the consequences for the young heroes who follow his lead?

Fund bosses welcome indy directors, but warn of talent shortage – Citywire.co.uk

Posted: July 5, 2017 at 10:46 pm

without comments

In its final study into the asset management sector last week the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) set out a series of new governance rules requiring investment funds to appoint a minimum of two independent directors.

Industry figures told Wealth Manager they believe oversight could be useful, but warned about a potential shortage of suitable talent.

Paul Mumford (pictured), fund manager of the Cavendish Opportunities, AIM and UK Select said that the house was already halfway compliant.

We have already got one who comes from a merchant banking background, he said. When we are in board meetings he will bring us a whole number of points on things were discussing like Mifid, money laundering or whatever else.'

He said that appointing a director-for-hire could mean the initiative became an excercise in rubberstamping, however.

If you have a non-exec who is a part of the family, or a dodgy old geezer whos just a nodding donkey that is not alright, he said.

But nowadays a lot of them are quite good and take an active interest in what happens, so when something goes wrong they are also partly to blame.

Citywire AAA-rated David Stevenson, who manages the UKSmaller Companiesfund at AmatiGlobal Investors, said the real challenge is one of availability and quality.

It is a good measure but I would not be in favour of appointing people on boards just for the sake of it. They should be able to offer guidance and contribute, he explained.

Before [our recent purchase by] Mattioli Woods we had an independent director who was a retired head of a fund-managing group.

He was a voice of experience and a very useful one to have. But people like that are hard to find they are not exactly hanging from the trees.

This new measure is also bound to bring an increase in costs, but considerations on that front were not as serious.

Mumford said it would be the same as hiring an extra analyst or member of back office staff. If you get the right non-exec it is worth the cost.

Majedie chief executive Rob Harris said it could present a barrier for new, smaller players trying to enter the market, however.

The cost element is part of doing business, he said We are small so governance will not be a problem for us, he said. But the cost will make it harder for new boutiques to start, which is sad.

The FCA estimates that as a result of the new rules each authorised fund manager (AFM) will incur an average one-off cost of 9,800 and an ongoing costs of 813,000 annually across the 192 AFMs.

Deputies: Boaters in Cayuga County told to excercise caution on – WSYR

Posted: at 2:41 am

without comments

CAYUGA COUNTY - WSYR-TV - Deputies in Cayuga and Onondaga Counties are telling boaters to exercise caution on waterways due to record rains and recent flooding.

Debris like logs and other vegetationmay have been washed into lakes and rivers, sometimes floating below the surface.

If people are going 20 or 30 mph, they're not going to see a log floating in the lake, said Dep. Tracey Baldwin, with the Cayuga County Sheriffs Marine Patrol.

For the past two days, Cayuga Countys Marine Patrol has been scanning the surface to catch those logs before they catch a boater off guard.

"A large boat is going to damage their prop, a smaller boat, it could actually throw everybody out into the water, which is obviously something we don't want to see, Baldwin said.

It's a problem on Owasco Lake and across Central New York after flash floods carried trees and debris into busy waterways. Its the same story for patrols on Skaneateles Lake and boaters spotted piles of logs right in the middle of Otisco Lake.

With the water levels so high, jet skis and small boats are creating waves that make their way to the shore and the small boats docked there break free and end up floating out into the middle of the lake.

Docks and moorings might not be visible below the water surface, and debris can damage a boat if hit.

Those out on the water should be mindful of their wakes and use extreme caution when navigating until conditions improve.

We are ready for Osun Senatorial Bye Election INEC, NYSC, security agencies – BusinessDay (satire) (press release) (registration) (blog)

Posted: at 2:41 am

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the leadership of military and paramilitary groups in Osun state, on Monday declared their readiness for the July 8, Osun West Senatoral Bye Election.

Speaking in turn at a stakeholders meeting held at INEC state office in Osogbo, Baritor Kpagih, the Delta State Resident Electoral Commissioner deployed to Osun to conduct the poll, assured all that the body has concluded arrangements to conduct a credible election.

Giving further details, Kpagih said voting will commence across wards in the Senatorial District by 8am and end by 2pm with a caveat that, whosoever on queue by 2pm will still be allowed to vote.

He added that accreditation and voting will take place simultaneously, noting that eleven political parties are fielding candidates in the election

Explaining that only the electorates with Permanent Voters Cards, verified by card readers would be allowed to vote, the REC said the materials to be used are customized on local government basis, which makes it difficult to divert them.

In his remarks, the State Commissioner of police, Olafimihan Adeoye, said there would be restriction of vehicular movement between the hours of 6:00am and 6:00pm on the election day, with an exception of Ibadan/Ife expressway, which shall not be blocked to traffic.

Warning that anyone caught formenting trouble would be made to face full wrath of the law regardless his or her party affiliations, Adeoye said those who have no role to play in the election should stay off polling area.

Speaking in similar vein, the State Director DSS, said the service has list of trouble makers already, positing that due attention is being paid to already identified flash points across West Senatorial District.

The state Director of NYSC, Emmanuel Attah, assured all political parties that the corps members that would be deployed for the excercise would be fair and warned politicians not to harass or intimidate them.

He dispelled insinuations that there are fake corp members already parading the state and said anyone that attempts to impersonate corps members that are election duty would be detected and handed over to security agents.

Meanwhile, Governor Rauf Aregbesola has called on the people of West Senatorial District to vote APC candidate, saying returning Hussein would allow him build on his achievements while in office between 2011 and 2014.

The governor who stated this while speaking at the mega rally held in Ejigbo, Aregbesola also called on the electorates to be peaceful during the poll.

Bola Bamigbola, Osogbo

Emma Rigby visits Northern Kenya 3 months on from the East Africa crisis appeal – Mareeg Media

Posted: July 3, 2017 at 1:44 pm

without comments

Actress Emma Rigby watches as Dima Konchoro receives her oil ration during a food distribution excercise in Bubisa, Marsabit, on 22nd June 2017 that was organised by CAFOD's partner Caritas Marsabit. Each family received rations of rice, beans cooking oil and sugar.

Mareeg.com-CAFOD celebrity ambassador Emma Rigby has just returned to the U.K following a visit to Northern Kenya to see how money raised from the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) and CAFODs East Africa Crisis Appeal, have been used to support the millions of people living in the region who are in urgent need of food and water due to devastating drought.

Through no fault of their own, the drought has caused people to lose their entire livelihoods livestock cattle, goats, camels which they are utterly dependent upon for their survival, said Ms. Rigby, 27.

On an emotional five-day trip, the ex- Hollyoaks actress, visited remote parts of northern Kenya, travelling with CAFOD and its local Caritas aid workers, to see how they deliver emergency aid to vulnerable families.

Visiting the Daaba community in Isiolo, she saw how a mobile nutrition clinic, was a life-line to mothers and their malnourished children.

Father Stephen Murage, director of Caritas Isiolo, who accompanied Emma, told her:

We never give up, whether the fourth, fifth, sixth drought, we never give up. We cant stand by and let people suffer. We must respond. Responding creates hope in peoples hearts. When people see Caritas, they find the strength to carry on, to survive.

Travelling further north, from Isiolo to Marsabit, Ms. Rigby saw urgently needed food being distributed to the community in Bubisa.

I met amazing women who, somehow, had found the will and the spirit to survive, said Emma.

She saw the dignified approach with whichCAFODs local Caritas aid workers from Caritas Marsabit, delivered vital food aid to 3,000 people each village representative collects the food aid and distributes it amongst the families in their village rather than queueing for hoursto receive their sacks of food, the village group sits together, and divides up the food aid, according to the needs of each family.

Emma continued: Here the community decided, with Caritas Marsabit, on a better way to distribute food aid, that didnt involve queuing, but did involve the participation of the community in their village groups.

What might seem a small detail to me or you, meant so much to the mainly women I met, they told me they felt in control, and their dignity had been restored.

The UN estimates that 23 million people across South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and northern Kenya are in need of humanitarian assistance, and wherehalf a million children under five are at risk of dying fromsevere acute malnutritionand requireimmediate life-saving treatment.

The DEC East Africa Crisis Appeal has raised 60 million, three months on from its appeal launch in March; and CAFODs own appeal has raised almost 4 million, to tackle the hunger crisis with local solutions.

Aid is reaching people suffering a humanitarian crisis in parts of East Africa, but ongoing drought and conflict are making the situation worse.CAFOD and its local Caritas aid agencies, continue to urgently support those hit by the devastating drought across East Africa. Emma, set to star in ITVsEndeavourthis autumn, said:

Three months may have passed by since this crisis hit the media headlines, but the needs are still great, the effect of this drought is not over.

CAFOD and its local aid workers are doing invaluable work providing aid where its needed most.

Ive learned that the aid I saw being delivered is more than just aid, it truly gives people a sense of hope and restores dignity.
