New spin on old tricks – The Rushville Republican

Posted: August 8, 2017 at 7:41 pm

INDIANAPOLIS It will be difficult if not impossible for any Indianapolis Colts pass rusher in the foreseeable future to escape Robert Mathis oversized shadow.

So it seems noteworthy that Jabaal Sheard is actively seeking it out.

One of first-year general manager Chris Ballards biggest offseason acquisitions, Sheard has spent nearly every free moment at Mathis side since practice began in the spring.

Its not uncommon to see the franchises all-time sacks leader donning conical pads on both arms while sparring with Sheard on the sideline. The excercise is designed to improve Sheards hand quickness one factor that could further amplify the 28-year-olds natural power.

But theres another move Sheard would love to master.

First, Im trying to learn that spin from him, the outside linebacker said with a laugh. Thats a whole other ... hes a freak of nature at that.

Sheard might not soon be bending his 6-foot-3, 265-pound frame perpendicular to the turf as he turns the corner in attempt to beat an offensive tackle.

But he is picking up tricks from Indianapolis most famous volunteer assistant coach.

Being around a GOAT like that, somebody thats been around the game and whos led the team in sacks, led the league in sacks (is a big help), Sheard said, using a popular acronym to identify Mathis as one of the greatest of all time. Any time you get a chance to work with him one on one, you want to.

The Colts are hoping all of those private lessons pay dividends.

Ballard has remodeled the Indianapolis defense into a younger, faster and more athletic unit. But there still are questions about where the primary pass rush will come from.

Sheard had a career-high 8.5 sacks as a rookie with Cleveland in 2011, and he had a combined 13 sacks in a rotational role with New England over the past two seasons.

The seventh-year veteran signed with the Colts in part because of the scheme. He wants to see what he can produce in the rush linebacker role popularized by Mathis in Indianapolis and Terrell Suggs in Baltimore.

Training camp is just a week old, but Colts head coach Chuck Pagano who coached both Mathis and Suggs in this scheme likes what hes seen thus far from Sheard.

He doesnt say a whole lot, Pagano said of the soft-spoken defender. He demands (a lot), in his own way, of himself and his teammates. But hes a big, physical guy. Hes a good pass rusher. I wouldnt be surprised to see him have double-digit sacks for us this year.

Sheards size and physicality also should make him a force in the run defense.

And the Pitt product isnt interested in individual numbers.

He was a part of Patriots teams that went to the AFC Championship Game and won the Super Bowl in the past two years, and winning is the only measurement hell use for success.

If statistical glory comes along with that, all the better.

I think every defensive ends goal is to get double-digit sacks, Sheard said. Since Ive been in the league, thats been one of my goals. If that helps the team win, hopefully (it will be achieved). But if it doesnt and thats not my job; my job is stopping the run thats what Im gonna focus on.

Anything I can do to help the team, thats what Im here for.

Pagano figures that will be plenty.

He raves about Sheards length and leverage. And he dreams of setting the big man loose on third down to chase opposing quarterbacks.

Hes hard to block, Pagano said.

If Sheard gets his way, that task eventually will become even more difficult.

Hes been watching film of Mathis and former running mate Dwight Freeney since he came into the NFL as a second-round draft pick.

And hes not giving up on discovering the secret to their success.

That spin move is gonna take a lot to learn, Sheard said. And Im gonna keep working at it.

Vast majority of Scottish children not meeting excercise guideline – The Scotsman

Posted: August 4, 2017 at 11:46 pm

without comments

Just one in 10 Scottish children achieve recommended levels of physical activity every day, a new study conducted for the Scottish Government has revealed.

Opposition politicians claimed the findings were alarming at a time when obesity is a major problem for Scottish children.

According to the research, the vast majority of 10 and 11-year-olds in Scotland were failing to meet guidelines, which say they should do at least one hour of moderate to vigorous exercise daily.

The findings were based on information provided by 774 10 and 11-year-olds taking part in the long-standing Growing Up in Scotland study.

It found that on average children were sedentary for 7.5 hours per day (7.7 hours during weekdays and 7.1 hours on weekends).

Just 11 per cent of children managed 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) every day.

This figure rose to 60 per cent when the requirement to breach the one hour barrier every day was removed and the average amount of moderate to physical activity per day was calculated across a longer period.

On average it was found that children spent 73 minutes in moderate to vigorous physical activity per day 76 minutes per weekday and 64 minutes per weekend day.

Boys were more active than girls with males spending 78 minutes in MVPA compared with 68 minutes.

Physical activity was measured by children reporting how much exercise they took or by wearing an activity monitor.

The study found that a slightly higher proportion of children from deprived areas met the guidelines, but the difference was not statistically significant.

Scottish Conservative shadow health secretary Miles Briggs said: This is a problem for everyone, regardless of deprivation or gender the entire country is impacted. From a public health perspective, its alarming that so few children are doing enough exercise each day.Weve always known activity levels in Scotland are lower than they should be.But people will be stunned that just 11 per cent of youngsters are doing enough. We already have severe problems with obesity north of the border, and all the health complications that brings.Going on this survey, that situation is only going to get worse in the years and decades to come. If the Scottish Government doesnt take strong action to address this now, thousands upon thousands of Scots will suffer the implications further down the line.Labours education spokesman Iain Gray said: This is a worrying report, with just11per cent of children meeting the recommended levels of exercise. We have a serious problem in this country with childhood obesity, and this report shows things are not getting any better.SNPministers haverepeatedly failed to deal with this crisis, with the number of home economics teachers having plummeted since they came to power and the SNP government failing to provide outdoor sports facilities to schools.Labourwould stop the SNPs cuts and would invest in education in Scotland.

Scottish Lib Dem health spokesman Alex Cole-Hamilton said the Scottish Government must invest more in encouraging healthy living. Mr Cole-Hamilton said: Healthy eating and lifestyle choices start in childhood. These new statistics confirm the need for children to be spending less time vegetating and more time exercising outside despite the ropey Scottish weather.

The strain on our waist line creates a strain on our NHS. We already spend hundreds of millions of pounds every year treating conditions that are ultimately avoidable. Weight related conditions like heart disease and cancer put huge strain on our NHS. Unless we take action now our NHS faces an obesity time bomb that will only increase pressure on services.

We need to ensure that parents get the support they need to give their children a healthy start in life. Scottish Liberal Democrats would invest in sport and promote healthy lifestyles as well as extend the rights of GPs to social prescribing, including free access to exercise programmes if they judge it will help the health and well being of an individual.

Aileen Campbell, Minister for Public Health and Sport, said: The Growing up in Scotland Study found that 60% of 10-11-year-olds are active for at least 60 minutes a day on average. This follows on from the most recent Scottish Health Survey, which found that 73% of two to 15-year-olds were active for at least 60 minutes a day.

This government is working to create a culture where children are as active as possible, helping to develop good habits throughout life. We have made a commitment for Scotland to become the first Daily Mile nation, with more than two in five primary schools currently taking part. Further details of this will be announced later this month.

The proportion of schools offering two hours or periods of PE per week has increased from less than 10% in 2004/5 to 98% in 2016 thanks to an 11.6 million investment. We have also invested 50 million in the successful Active Schools programme, along with a significant investment in new facilities.

We want to go further, particularly to encourage more teenage girls to be active. Our 300,000 sporting equality fund will encourage more girls and women to take part in sport at all levels. We are also continuing to invest in the sportscotlands Active Girls programme, specifically working with teenage girls.

BREVARD COUNTY PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, FLORIDA The 920th Rescue Wing and 45th Space Wing inspection teams worked side-by-side recently as they tested their units response capabilities in working together to combat an active shooter on the installation.

The exercise kicked off in Hangar 750, when a disgruntled Airman shot six others and then himself.

A team of 45th Security Forces Squadron defenders were dispatched to the scene where they apprehended the suspect and cleared the building.

Pararescuemen from the 308th Rescue Squadron reported to the Hangar shortly afterward and rendered first aid to the victims until the 45th Civil Engineer Squadron fire department arrived on scene.

The medics then worked together to safely transport the victims onto awaiting ambulances bound for the hospital.

The exercise ended mid afternoon when the commanders action teams and support personnel finished their roles in obtaining 100 percent accountability of personnel, next of kin notifications for those killed and injured and other behind-the-scenes actions.

To your Good Health: Choose a better diet and excercise regimen for health – Prescott Daily Courier

Dr. Keith Roach, Syndicated Columnist

DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you said, I dont find simply telling people to eat less and move more to always be an effective therapy. What do you suggest to patients wanting to lose weight? C.N.

ANSWER: The vast majority of patients I see who are overweight know they are overweight, and have tried unsuccessfully to lose weight. Often, they have tried multiple different types of diets, sometimes having success in the short term but then having gained it back. Eat less, move more, while correct, doesnt address the issues that are important for many people.

Although some of my colleagues will disagree with me, I look at the issue differently. I recommend that people choose a healthy diet. There are many healthy diets, and people can choose what they like, but I recommend plenty of vegetables, some fruits, and good-quality protein sources such as legumes or nuts and lean meats or fatty fish for those who eat them; processed foods, especially starches and processed meats, should be avoided. Along with these dietary changes, which are modest for many people, I advise increasing exercise, from wherever the person starts (within reason). My rationale is that losing weight often seems unattainable to people; however, eating better and exercising more feel like they are within ones control. There is no doubt that people will be healthier with a better diet and with more exercise.

It is true that over a long time, most people who make those dietary and exercise changes will lose weight. But the primary goal is to improve health, even if the weight doesnt come down.

Some people, especially those with medical problems due to their weight, need more-intensive intervention, and I am fortunate to have colleagues in weight management, both medical and surgical, for those who need it.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I went gluten-free four years ago for health reasons. I had no irritable bowel issues or celiac disease. After this amount of time, is it OK to reintroduce wheat and gluten? Does going gluten-free when you do not have celiac disease cause you to become more gluten-sensitive because its reintroduction would be like a foreign substance to your system? I fear I may have caused myself to become gluten-sensitive by avoiding it when I didnt have to. Can you please advise? L.

ANSWER: If you had no gluten sensitivity and no celiac disease, then you should have no issues with going back on a diet containing gluten, as far as I have been able to tell from my reading and my understanding of the condition. However, some people with celiac disease have extremely mild symptoms, such as fatigue or abdominal discomfort after eating, which are symptoms felt by nearly everyone from time to time. Nonetheless, making the diagnosis of celiac disease is important, even in people with minimal or no symptoms. People with celiac disease are more likely to develop autoimmune disorders, nutritional deficiencies and some cancers. Also, dietary intervention is critical in the case of women who might become pregnant.

If you truly had no symptoms at all before you went gluten-free, and still dont once you restart, I dont think any testing is necessary. However, if you notice symptoms, then a blood antibody test while on a diet containing gluten can establish the diagnosis.

Tennis teaching pro Kevin Donovan has been looking for a coaching position for several years and now he has found the right fit for him and his family.

Saturday, Baylor School director of tennis Ned Caswell announced that Donovan, who is currently a teaching pro at Manker Patten Tennis Club, is the new Baylor head tennis coach for boys and girls.

Kevin has so much energy and does a great job in developing young players. He is a rock star, said Caswell who is also the Manker Patten director of tennis.

Caswell also announced that Renato Mizutani and Jason Tipton will serve on the tennis staff as associate head coaches for both programs.

Mizutani is currently a teaching pro at Manker Patten and Tipton has been an assistant coach for the Red Raiders the past seven years.

Donovan replaces Dustin Kane as the girls coach, while Caswell was the boys coach this past season.

Kane, who led the Baylor girls team to seven straight TSSAA D-II AA state titles, resigned from his position at Baylor in June and has moved back to his hometown of Kansas City, Mo. to pursue a business interest.

We will miss Dustin as well as longtime assistant and head coach Park Lockrow who has decided to focus on his teaching duties at Baylor, Caswell said.

I have waited a long time for doors to open for me to be a coach, said Donovan, I love the team atmosphere and having the opportunity to coach at Baylor is a perfect fit for myself and my wife as we wanted a coaching job here in Chattanooga.

I feel is will be difficult to replace a legend (Dustin Kane), but I feel I am up to the task to continue the great Baylor tennis tradition and will wear the Baylor tennis shirt with pride.

Kevin Donovan 2nd team All-American at Anderson (S.C.) Junior College in 1995 under coach Ned Caswell helping the school to a national runner-up finish. He also played three years at Ball State (Ind.) and helped the school to a Mid-American Conference title in 1998.

I feel my strengths are building relationships with young players and being able to bring a great deal of energy to a school program, stated Donovan who will also work with the Middle School players.

Renato Mizutani played collegiately at Shorter College . is currently a teaching pro at Manker Patten is a former head coach at Signal Mountain HS.

Jason Tipton played No.1 for four years at Lookout Valley HS (1999-2002) . Earned an excercise science degree from UTC served as a teaching pro at The Champions Club (2003-2010) before moving to Baylor in 2011.

I feel my strengths are to teach players how to play through adversity and be mentally tough, Tipton stated. I also strive to be a good role model for these kids.

Emma Rigby visits Northern Kenya 3 months on from the East Africa … – Mareeg Media

Posted: July 8, 2017 at 12:43 am

without comments

Actress Emma Rigby watches as Dima Konchoro receives her oil ration during a food distribution excercise in Bubisa, Marsabit, on 22nd June 2017 that was organised by CAFOD's partner Caritas Marsabit. Each family received rations of rice, beans cooking oil and sugar.

Mareeg.com-CAFOD celebrity ambassador Emma Rigby has just returned to the U.K following a visit to Northern Kenya to see how money raised from the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) and CAFODs East Africa Crisis Appeal, have been used to support the millions of people living in the region who are in urgent need of food and water due to devastating drought.

Through no fault of their own, the drought has caused people to lose their entire livelihoods livestock cattle, goats, camels which they are utterly dependent upon for their survival, said Ms. Rigby, 27.

On an emotional five-day trip, the ex- Hollyoaks actress, visited remote parts of northern Kenya, travelling with CAFOD and its local Caritas aid workers, to see how they deliver emergency aid to vulnerable families.

Visiting the Daaba community in Isiolo, she saw how a mobile nutrition clinic, was a life-line to mothers and their malnourished children.

Father Stephen Murage, director of Caritas Isiolo, who accompanied Emma, told her:

We never give up, whether the fourth, fifth, sixth drought, we never give up. We cant stand by and let people suffer. We must respond. Responding creates hope in peoples hearts. When people see Caritas, they find the strength to carry on, to survive.

Travelling further north, from Isiolo to Marsabit, Ms. Rigby saw urgently needed food being distributed to the community in Bubisa.

I met amazing women who, somehow, had found the will and the spirit to survive, said Emma.

She saw the dignified approach with whichCAFODs local Caritas aid workers from Caritas Marsabit, delivered vital food aid to 3,000 people each village representative collects the food aid and distributes it amongst the families in their village rather than queueing for hoursto receive their sacks of food, the village group sits together, and divides up the food aid, according to the needs of each family.

Emma continued: Here the community decided, with Caritas Marsabit, on a better way to distribute food aid, that didnt involve queuing, but did involve the participation of the community in their village groups.

What might seem a small detail to me or you, meant so much to the mainly women I met, they told me they felt in control, and their dignity had been restored.

The UN estimates that 23 million people across South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and northern Kenya are in need of humanitarian assistance, and wherehalf a million children under five are at risk of dying fromsevere acute malnutritionand requireimmediate life-saving treatment.

The DEC East Africa Crisis Appeal has raised 60 million, three months on from its appeal launch in March; and CAFODs own appeal has raised almost 4 million, to tackle the hunger crisis with local solutions.

Aid is reaching people suffering a humanitarian crisis in parts of East Africa, but ongoing drought and conflict are making the situation worse.CAFOD and its local Caritas aid agencies, continue to urgently support those hit by the devastating drought across East Africa. Emma, set to star in ITVsEndeavourthis autumn, said:

Three months may have passed by since this crisis hit the media headlines, but the needs are still great, the effect of this drought is not over.

CAFOD and its local aid workers are doing invaluable work providing aid where its needed most.

Ive learned that the aid I saw being delivered is more than just aid, it truly gives people a sense of hope and restores dignity.
