Meditation group starting up at Payson Public Library

Posted: at 6:47 am

without comments

A potentially life changing opportunity starts this Monday at the Payson Public Library a new meditation book group is forming.

The gathering will offer attendees a chance to experience the gentle, yet powerful, practice of meditation. The book utilized by the group is entitled True Meditation.

A passage from that book observed: It doesnt matter whether one is brand new to meditation or has been meditating for a long time. What matters is the attitude with which we engage the process of meditation. The most important thing is that we come to meditation with an open attitude, an attitude that is truly innocent, by which I mean an attitude thats not colored by the past, by what weve heard about meditation through culture, through the media, or through our various spiritual and religious traditions. We need to approach the notion of meditation in a way that is fresh and innocent.

The group will meet on the second and fourth Mondays of each month through January from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 pm. Participants will sit comfortably in chairs for this practice.

The book may be obtained through Amazon.com for $15, and includes a CD of two guided meditations. There is no charge to attend.

The facilitator, Kimberly Chambers, is a retired teacher with 35 years of meditation practice. She has held many spiritual book groups since the 1990s, including Eckhart Tolles The Power of Now, Deepak Chopras Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, and Arizonas Dr. David Hawkins Power vs. Force.

Orange Pop: BLOK’s Gianna Gianna to issue new book at Detroit Bar release party this weekend

Posted: at 6:47 am

Gianna Giannas second book of poetry is All Encompassing Vol. II. Photo: Leonard Ortiz, The Register

Gianna Gianna is truly never satisfied. The 22-year-old has made a name for herself locally as part of BLOK, the hip-hop/electronic trio that includes her two brothers, Damien Blaise and Jesse St. John. Shes a fearless performer, dancing and singing and rapping while sporting fierce fashions, dangerously high shoes and dramatic eye makeup.

Shes happy to have that outlet to express herself, yet the insatiable artist inside her craves more, she shared during a recent interview over nachos and coffee at the Gypsy Den in Santa Ana.

Her eyes grew wide and she talked a great deal with her hands as she passionately described her latest endeavor, All Encompassing Vol. II, a second book of poetry and art that she will release with a party Saturday night at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa. The free show will feature performances by BLOK, the Lovely Bad Things, Moon Pearl and some surprise guests. Gianna will not be reading from her book, but paper and hardback copies, published by DeadFaceMediaGroup, will be available for purchase.

I love the digital progressive movement, graphic design and multimedia all of that, she said in between sips, but I love having an actual, real, hard-copy book. Gianna released the first volume of poetry last year on her 21st birthday. The plan, she says, is to release a new edition each year to document her growth in art, philosophy, poetry and awareness.

My goal is to just continue to grow, she adds, almost with childlike wonder. I want to take in everything that I can and just be authentic. When I was working on this book, I didnt compare it to the last one. When I looked at the finished product, I myself could see the difference, and I hope other people can, too.

Gianna began writing poetry in grade school but it wasnt until she started working on verses for BLOK that brother Damien helped harness her free-flowing ideas. Poetry brought her back to reality, she says, joking about being someone who is kinda out-there. Her early works were inspired by spiritual activist and author Marianne Williamsons book A Return to Love, which she first read in 7th grade.

It really did blow my mind, she shares. I just remember being like, Oh my gosh, this is everything Ive been thinking, just written down! Then I researched people like Deepak Chopra and Eckhart Tolle.

Growing up in Irvine, Gianna says her house was always filled with music and art. As the little sister, she watched her siblings creativity flourish and she wanted in on the action.

I just remember it all as being joyous, she says of her childhood. My dad was out of the picture at a very early age, but my mom is just so brilliant. She was so encouraging and put us all in acting, dancing, music, art. That gave us all such a well-rounded understanding of the arts as well as self-expression. Damien would always be creating beats, Jesse would be drawing and I would be writing. It was very nurturing and I just feel so fortunate.

‘Hrithik Roshan has a sweet tooth’

Posted: at 6:46 am

Mumbai, Oct. 21 -- Few people ever get to hang out with their heroes, let alone live their lives. So for 20-year-old Kolkata-based Jyoti Vishwakarma, a die-hard fan of Hrithik Roshan, getting a chance to put herself in the shoes of India's first superhero was more than a dream come true. "I'm ecstatic that my first ever trip to Mumbai was to meet my favourite star, Hrithik Roshan. I couldn't have asked for more," she says about the day she spent shooting for UTV Stars' show, Live My Life 2, that airs tonight at 7 pm.

Even though she's a huge, huge fan of the actor (she even had his name tattooed on her arm), spending a day living like her hero taught her things about him that she never knew before. Here are five Hrithik facts she discovered.

I knew that Hrithik is an inspiration to many people, but what I didn't know was the first person to inspire him was his grandfather, J Omprakash, and the second is his father, Rakesh Roshan.

Whenever he travels or feels low, he reads a book called A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle.

He has a sweet tooth, so I knew he liked cakes, chocolates and brownies. But what I learned was that he even likes Indian sweets such as sandesh, which I had taken for him.

No matter how busy he is, he always makes time for his friends and he helps them in whatever way he can.

He's really particular about his exercise regime and his diet. He frequently changes the two. Currently, he has about seven to eight meals a day. And his trainer told me that his blood group is B + and that happens to be the same blood group as mine!

Eckhart Tolle, meditation and the meaning and benefits of inner peace

Posted: at 6:46 am

Hugh Byrne is a Senior Teacher at the Insight Meditation Community of Washington and a contributor to The Washington Posts local faith leader network.

Have you ever been caught up in a wave of anger, craving or worry where you felt the emotion carry you away like a wild horse you could not control? Most of us have experienced the strength of these energies and wondered how to work with rather than be ruled by them.

Have you felt such a wave of unruly emotion but been able to bring awareness to it and observe it instead? An important shift takes place: the awareness creates space and allows us to see other possibilities than just acting out whatever we are feeling. This is more akin to riding a horse we have begun to train.

The healing power of bringing awareness to our experiencejust as it is here and nowis what Eckhart Tolle calls the power of now. Tolle, who is giving a rare public talk in Washington Thursday night at the Warner Theater, points to the freedom and inner peace that comes from opening fully to this moment without judgment, resistance, or holding.

For over 2,000 years, Buddhism and other wisdom traditions have taught that there is a way out of the stress and suffering that can fill our lives, and a possibility of living a life free of suffering. Mindfulness, the practice of opening fully to our experience in this momentthe joys and sorrows; the good, the bad, and the uglyis the gateway to this deep freedom of the heart.

In recent years, the wisdom of these ancient teachings has been confirmed by scientific studies, which demonstrate that we can train our minds, change our brains, increase our well-being, and radically lessen such afflictive states of mind as anxiety and depression.

One recent studyshowed that the structure of the brains of participants in an eight-week mindfulness meditation program changed with an average of just 27 minutes of meditation a day. Results from brain scans revealed an increase in gray-matter density in areas of the brain associated with memory, self-awareness, compassion and introspection, and a decrease in density of gray matter in areas associated with stress and anxiety.

Other studies have shown that meditation may lower blood pressure, slow the progression of HIV, reduce pain help break addictions, and even ward off the effects of aging.

Supported by these recent scientific studies, meditation has come into the mainstream:

Veterans returning from combat are being taught meditation and yoga to help lessen and heal the traumas of war.
