What is the Ashram? | Svaroopa Yoga and Meditation

Since ancient times, the Sanskrit word ashram names the place where the Guru lives. The Ashram houses the Gurus physical being, as well as the shakti, the divine energy of Grace, that flows through the Guru. If you have spent any time with Swami Nirmalananda, you have experienced this current of shakti. While it is present in everything that exists, it is stronger and more concentrated in a yogi who has dedicated herself to serve in this way. The deeper Swamiji takes her own practice, the stronger the shakti flows through her. The Ashram serves as a place to house it, to nurture it, and to plant it on the physical plane. As a visitor you will feel it, perhaps when you first enter, or after youve been there for a while, or even after you leave. Swamiji wants us to consider the Ashram our home, as well as hers.

If you are enrolled in a Svaroopa Yoga & Meditation course in Pennsylvania, you will likely be invited for lunch at the Ashram. The house appears from the outside like any other large suburban home in the neighborhood. Youll be greeted at the door with a traditional arati, a waving of a candle flame, and a dot of sacred ash on your forehead. These honor your inherent Divinity, which is the that which Swamiji bows to in herself and in her Guru.

Upon entering, youll remove your shoes and coat, and be invited to walk through the downstairs rooms, which are filled with photographs of our lineage and murtis (divine statues), all to invoke your profound and deep experience of your own Self. Youll sit in the meditation room for a few minutes with Swamiji and participate in the lunchtime japa, mantra repetition, one of our three daily sessions that Ashram residents share with Swamiji.

Lunch is in the sunny dining area off the kitchen, and consists of a vegetarian meal, served by ashram chefs who follow Ayurvedic cooking guidelines. Swamiji eats with her guests, making sure everyone is well fed. After a delicious dessert, she presents you with a blessed gift of a rudraksha bead (sacred bead).

Yes! Swami Nirmalananda encourages those who are committed to the exploring the deeper science of the Self to deepen their practice and experience of the Self. If we have available space, you may apply for residency. We also have a B&B program so that visitors may experience the gifts that the Ashram offers.

hover backgroundMud Therapy

Mud is an important element of nature. It contains important minerals which have positive effects on human health. Mud can absorb toxins from human body therefore is very useful in preventing many diseases. It is also known for its healing properties. It also helps in cooling and relaxing body as it can hold moisture for a long time.Benefits of Mud therapy:It relaxes muscles and improves blood .It maintains metabolism rendering positive impact on digestionIt is useful in conditions of inflammation/ swelling and relieves painIt is useful in condition of stiff jointsWhy use mud therapy?Out of the five constituent elements of this universe mud (earth) has a pivotal role to play in our well being. The dark color of mud helps in absorbing different colors and conveying them to the the body, giving it therapeutic properties. Also, its shape and consistency may be modified with ease, just by changing the water content, which makes it easy to use.

"Pure water is the real medicine. The Great sun is the real physician. They cure all diseases and also prevent an untimely death"Sunlight helps nourish the muscles. All athletes regularly bask in the sun, as it helps develop the size and strength of the muscles and increases the proportion of calcium in them giving them greater endurance. If the skin is deprived of sunlight by keeping it covered, the muscles tend to weaken and degenerate.Sunlight promotes the proper formation of teeth, speedy growth of hair and quick and deep breathing. It maintains and even increases the amount of alkali in the blood. Blood pressure is brought down and the kidneys become more efficient. By the action of sunlight skin diseases are cured.

Water is believed as an ancient method of treatment. Taking bath properly with clean, fresh and cold water is an excellent form of hydro-therapy. Such bath opens up all pores of skin, imparts lightness and freshness to the body, all systems and muscles of the body are activated and blood circulation improves. The old tradition of taking bath in rivers, ponds and water falls on specific occasions is virtually a natural form of hydro therapy only. Hip bath, enema, spinal bath, hot foot and arm bath, hot and cold fomentation, steam bath, immersion bath, hot and cold packs on abdomen, chest and other parts of the body are some of the treatments in hydro therapy. Hydro therapy is used mainly for preserving health and curing different types of diseases.

Fasting refers to complete abstinence from food for a short or long period for a specific purpose. It is nature's oldest, most effective and yet least expensive method of treating disease. By pepriving the body of food for a time, the organs of elimination such as the bowels, kidneys, skin and lungs are given opportunity to expel, unhampered, the overload of accumulated waste from the system. Thus, fasting is merely the process of purification and an effective and quick method of cure. Methods of Fasting:i) Dry Fastingii) Water Fastingiii) Juice FastingThe best safest and most effective method of fasting is Juice fasting. During juice fasting various juices are given. This helps the elimination of toxins out of the body through various eliminative channels. Juice fasting enhances the bodies own healing power and cell regeneration and thus speeding the recovery.

Prem Nagar Ashram

Posted: March 18, 2018 at 4:42 pm

Introduction To Prem Nagar Ashram

Shri Prem Nagar Ashram is the premier Ashram established by Shri Hans Ji Maharaj and further developed by Jagat Janani Shri Mata Ji andShri Satpal Ji Maharaj.

Situated on the banks of Ganges, Hardwar is one of the holiest pilgrimage places in India. For thousands of years, it has been the chosen retreat of saints, sages and pilgrims who after retiring from worldly involvement pursued a solitary life of study, meditation & austerity.

Shri Prem Nagar Ashram is situated on Jwalapur Road, 3 kilometres from the town of Hardwar, between the major pilgrimage places of Hardwar, Jwalapur and Kankhal. Located as it is between the swiftly-flowing yet serene Ganges and the foothills of the Himalayas, it is an ideal and tranquil setting for spiritual practice. The twin peaks of Chandi Devi and Mansa Devi, capped by temples, are visible from the Ashram. The sounds of nearby temple bells and devotional songs are carried on the morning and evening breezes, mingling with birdsong and augmenting the peaceful and contemplative atmosphere of the Ashram.

Founded in 1944 by Yogiraj Satgurudev Shri Hans Ji Maharaj, the building and shaping of Prem Nagar was his and his devotees' labour of love. When the land was purchased, it was rocky and overgrown with thorny scrub, and its only inhabitants were snakes and scorpions, Yet Shri Hans Ji Maharaj had a vision:

"From here to the street, well construct a long driveway bordered by beautiful gardens. Well build seven arches along it. Over there well build a huge satsang hall which will be adorned with quotations from the saints and divine Masters of all religions. The driveway gardens will be decorated with fountains, benches and flowerbeds. The pathway itself will have raised borders carrying quotations from saints and scriptures about the spiritual experience, service, love and devotion. Devotees will read them as they walk down the path, and this will purify their minds and prepare them for satsang and meeting the spiritual Master."

This dream has come true, through the combined efforts of Masters and devotees over the years. From 1950 onwards the work began in earnest. Devotees got together to level the land and construct a hut where Shri Hans Ji Maharaj and a few devotees lived. From this humble beginning it has grown into a huge and uniquely beautiful showplace of more than 1000 rooms.

As Shri Hans Ji Maharaj said, "I have been offered donations large enough to complete the construction of this Ashram, but that is not what I want. I prefer to give each and every devotee a chance to participate in this holy and meritorious work. Service is the expression of love, and this kind of spontaneous loving service will gradually build Prem Nagar, the City of Love."

He further said, "Anyone entering Prem Nagar will be blessed with spiritual knowledge and service in this Ashram will give incredible merit towards higher life and salvation."

Indian ashrams are traditionally places where saints and sages practise meditation and where spiritual knowledge is passed on from Master to disciple. The ashram represents purity, virtue, spirituality and high ideals. It is a place for sharing the highest wisdom. Not just retreats, ashrams are ideally centers of learning, similar to the great monasteries of Europe. Here, sincere aspirants are initiated into the techniques of meditation, along with learning the art of selfless service and studying the scriptures and teachings of the Saints and Masters.

Prem Nagar enshrines the twin ideals of service and meditation. As soon as a person enters the front gate, he experiences the aura of peace. The scriptural quotations lining the main driveway illustrate the fundamental unity of all religions, which is Self-realization and merging of the individual soul with God.

The beauty of the Ashram is further enhanced by approximately 250 varieties of flowers and different types of trees. On the eastern extremity of the Ashram is the Ganges, on the bank of which bathing facilities ('ghats') have been constructed. Shri Hans Ji Maharaj passed away in 1966, and in his memory a shrine was built by his wife, Shri Mata Rajeshwari Devi, and his son, Shri Satpal Ji Maharaj, who took over the reins of his mission and continued his noble work. Under their guidance the Ashram flourished and expanded, growing more beautiful year by year.

Shri Hans Ji Maharaj, from the Himalayan district of Uttarakhand, was an enlightened master in the tradition of the divine masters such as Lord Rama, Lord Krishna, Shri Shankaracharya, Guru Nanak, Jesus Christ, Lord Buddha and Shri Ramakrishna, who came into the world to free people from blind faith, ignorance, superstition and misery by means of the practical technique of Spiritual Knowledge which leads to the direct realization of the self.

The noble work of Shri Hans Ji Maharaj is being carried on by his eldest son, Shri Satpal Ji Maharaj, who was born in Kankhal (Haridwar) on Sept 21, 1951. His innate leadership and organising abilities, as well as his inherent spirituality, started manifesting themselves even in his childhood, so that, when the time came, he dedicated himself to his father's work with characteristic zeal and efficiency. Totally devoted to his own Master, and never veering from the high ideals and moral integrity of his teachings, Shri Satpal Ji Maharaj demonstrated the path of service and sacrifice in his own life.

Sri Aurobindo Ashram – Darshan Messages

Posted: March 15, 2018 at 12:43 pm

without comments

This section of the website contains the Darshan message cards distributed at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. You can view the card distributed for a particular occasion and for those wanting to have a printed copy of the cards, a downloadable version is also provided. Each message card can be printed and folded to resemble the actual card distributed at the Ashram. Separate monochrome and colour PDF files are included.

"Darshan" in Sanskrit means "seeing". It refers here to seeing Sri Aurobindo and the Mother and to receive their blessings. After Sri Aurobindo retired from daily contact with his disciples, he saw them only a few times a year on what came to be known as the Darshan days.

During Sri Aurobindo's lifetime, messages were given out only occasionally on the Darshan days; afterwards, they were issued regularly. Some of these were written expressly for the occasion, others were passages chosen from the works of the Mother and Sri Aurobindo.

That tradition still continues today. The day starts with a meditation around the samadhi. During the day, sadhaks and devotees are allowed to visit either Sri Aurobindo's or the Mother's room, depending on the occasion. Message cards containing passages from their works are distributed to all who attend the Darshan.
