Aerobics pioneer still in the fitness business at 86 – The Seattle Times

Next year marks the half-century of Dr. Kenneth H. Coopers best-seller, Aerobics, in which he told us to get off our duffs and quit our unhealthy ways, and set in motion a national guilt trip.

People around the world know Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper as the father of aerobics.

But theres another side to him: Ken Cooper, businessman.

Yes, hes still a physician first. But being a good businessman has been his great enabler.

Age: 86

Claim to fame: Got America focused on fitness with his best-seller Aerobics, published in 1968.

Start: Was as Air Force doctor responsible for the astronaut fitness program

Now: Chairman of family-owned company medical clinic and fitness operation with revenue close to $100 million.

Source: Dallas Morning News

Today, the Cooper Aerobics Center is a 30-acre urban oasis with a nonprofit research center, medical clinic, fitness center with a restaurant, spa, luxury hotel and conference center, swimming pool, tennis courts, walking trails, on some the priciest real estate in Dallas.

The company also sells vitamins and supplements and offers corporate wellness programs.

The family-owned company generates annual revenue that will approach $100million this year and is profitable, said his son Tyler Cooper, the companys CEO.

Once Ken Cooper was labeled a charlatan. Now at 86, hes considered an international treasure.

Next year marks the half-century of his best-seller, Aerobics, in which Cooper told us to get off our duffs and quit our unhealthy ways. He set in motion a national guilt trip.

To mark the 50th anniversary, Cooper is working on an updated version of his seminal book and his memoirs.

The course of Coopers life was changed by a water-skiing incident at Lake Texoma in 1960, when he was an out-of-shape, overweight 29-year-old Army medical resident.

Hed gained nearly 40 pounds over the course of med school, his internship and early marriage, and hadnt been on water skis in eight years.

Id gone to pot, like 80 percent of my medical-school colleagues, Cooper said.

Once behind the boat, Cooper got nauseated, his heart was racing and he thought he was having a heart attack.

It turned out to be temporary cardiac arrhythmia. But it was a permanent wake-up call.

He lost the weight in six months and ran his first marathon.

Today hes 5 feet, 11 inches tall (having shrunk a couple of inches) and weighs 168 pounds exactly what he weighed in high school when he was running track and playing basketball.

I was prediabetic. I was hypertensive. All that disappeared after I lost that weight. Ive kept that weight for 56 years now.

That was divine intervention, Im sure it was. Otherwise I was right on the same pathway as my other medical colleagues and Id be dead already. Im sure of it.

In 1970, flush with $25,000 in savings and a 1968 paperback best-seller (Aerobics), the 39-year-old colonel and doctor left the Air Force in San Antonio, where he was responsible for the astronaut fitness program, and moved to Dallas to practice preventive medicine.

Most people thought Cooper was loopy.

People said, Theres no way you can make a living trying to take care of healthy people. People want physicians when theyre sick and not when theyre well, Cooper said. First couple of years, I thought they were right.

He set up the Aerobics Center in a two-room office with two employees: another doctor and a secretary.

Coopers dream began to manifest in late 1971, when he borrowed money to move to an old mansion on 8 acres.

The center prospered throughout Dallas go-go years. But things came to a screeching halt with Texas real estate and financial debacle. In 1988, he almost lost it all.

Cooper had borrowed $15 million to invest in expansion and still owed $9.6 million when the bank that lent him the money failed and was taken over.

The new out-of-state bank said the property was worth only $5.6million and called the loan even though Cooper had never missed a payment.

Cooper fought the bank for the next three years, had bankruptcy documents drawn up and spent $600,000 in legal fees.

I was under stress like you wouldnt believe, Cooper said. I got four foreclosure notices that last year of 91, always delivered by a messenger on a Friday afternoon at 5:30, threatening to lock the gates on Monday. I panicked the first time, didnt sleep for a weekend. The second, third and fourth time, it didnt bother me.

He finally was able to renegotiate his debt.

Fifteen years later, in October 2004, Cooper paid off the loan and burned the mortgage.

I dont think we saved the ashes, he said.

Cooper attributes the companys success to four things: divine intervention, an extraordinary staff that includes 24 physicians, proving to companies that wellness programs increase profits and providing service that keeps patients coming back.

Ive tried to impress upon our physicians that our patients dont have to come back. They pay big dollars to come here. We dont take insurance, he said. Yet, we have a 74 percent return rate. Fifty-four percent are corporate sponsored. Our patients come back because they are equally concerned about how much we care as they are about how much we know.

That is the secret to our success as an organization.

In 2014, Cooper became chairman and turned over the CEO reins to his son, who was born eight days after Ken saw his first patient at the center.

Cooper said the companys future is in Tylers hands particularly when it comes to the grand plan of establishing the Cooper brand internationally.

Does this signal that the patriarch is heading toward the corporate finish line?

The question draws equally incredulous responses from both.

Im confident that my dad will be thinking of something new and working on improving health around the world until the day he dies, said Tyler Cooper. Theres no last hurrah in my dads mindset.

Amped Up: Water aerobics in the summer

WMAZ 2:41 AM. EDT June 29, 2017

When the sun starts to shine and the mercury starts to rise in the summer, many people seek the comfort of a swimming pool. Well, this group of seniors in Warner Robins are not only seeking the cooling waters for relaxation, they are also making waves to get Amped Up and improve their physical fitness.

Instructor Lauren Posten explains, I like being able to help them with exercises that are good for their joints and their bodies. They get to tell me about their bodies and its a great exchange of information which is good for me because I get to learn all kinds of things.

Four days out of the week, twice a day, the Fountain Pool is open to an hourlong water aerobics class put on by the Warner Robins Recreation Department, but active seniors like 75-year-old Wendell Franklin and swimmate 68-year-old Sandy Setinsek take advantage of the morning sessions so they can continue to grow more heart-healthy.

If you have arthritis or something like that, you can get in the water and there is no impact, explains Franklin. So you can do the exercise without impact and the pain is gone while youre in the water.

Both Wendell and Sandy have been wading in the shallow end of the pool with workouts for more than 10 years and say the results are worth making a splash over.

I come from the camaraderie as well as the exercise, says Setinsek. I can tell the days I don't come I get stiff. Its just wonderful low impact exercise for us older seniors. Very important, in fact, every time I go to the doctors, they ask me how much I exercise and they are very pleased with water aerobics.

And when one wins, they all win while encouraging one another to keep pushing along with their journey.

Posten says, They get really excited when they come in and say, 'I lost 5 pounds last month.' We all get to celebrate with them because as a collected group everybody is invested with them. They spend a good bit of time socializing beforehand then we start our exercises and they cheer each other on and it's really fun to watch.

A special taster session of the class, which is held weekly at Victory Housing Trusts Heather Barrow Court, saw around 20 older people try the low-impact exercise class, designed to keep joints supple and improve mobility.

Led by instructor Karl Parnell from North Norfolk District Council the class involved a range of stretching and movement exercises while remaining seated the whole time.

Christine Candlish from Victory said: Not only do these classes help older people stay fit, but there is a huge benefit from the social interaction as well. There is a lot of laughter and friendship on top of the business of keeping fit.

What they said

92-year-old Kathleen Brunton, who lives at Heather Barrow Court, has been attending the classes since they started and says she feels much fitter for having taken part.

As well as the physical exercise, meeting people and doing it together makes you feel better. It has got easier over the weeks, and I am certainly going to carry on coming. Wed miss it if it didnt happen now.

79-year-old Margaret Howes comes to Heather Barrow Court from her home in the town every week to take part. Its fun, I really enjoy it. Its easy to do, and you are meeting people. I find myself doing the exercises when Im sitting in my armchair at home in front of the television, it has become part of my routine.

David Callaby, 57, and his wife Lorraine, 59, were trying the seated aerobics class for the first time at the taster session. The couple, who live in Thorn Road in the town, were not sure what to expect of the class. David has arthritis and diabetes and is not very mobile, so was understandably apprehensive at coming to an exercise class.

It was very good, said David. I was able to go at my own pace, with no pressure to do things I wasnt able to. It is really nice to be part of a group, and we will definitely come again.

72-year-old Christina Sherlock lives at Heather Barrow Court, and has been coming to the classes since they began. I have COPD, so basically dont do a lot. The first time I was a bit stiff, but I now feel much fitter for it. I really enjoy it, and would say to people to come. It will benefit you and youll enjoy it we have a good laugh.

When and where

Classes take place at 11am on a Friday morning in the common room of the Heather Barrow Court sheltered housing complex in Fakenham, and cost 1 a week.

For more details, contact Jo Todd at Victory Housing Trust on 01692 502496, or email jo.todd@victoryhousing.co.uk.

VINE pool to surface July 10 – Mankato Free Press

Posted: at 3:40 pm

without comments

MANKATO VINE Adult Community Centers pool is just about ready to make its initial splash.

The $1.3 million project, funded by a combination of grants, donations, fundraisers and loans, will conclude with a grand opening event at 10:30 a.m. July 10 at the nonprofit on Fifth Street.

The 19 feet by 50 feet pool will then be used for exercise and recreation, allowing seniors to keep busy with another activity on site.

Karen Christy, VINEs health and wellness coordinator, said a pool was part of the nonprofits vision since before the community center even existed.

One of the first things that came up was a warm-water pool, she said of early planning discussions. A lot of people if they have any kind of issues with joints arthritis, knee replacement, hip replacement its one of the best ways to stay active.

Seniors currently use Old Main Villages nearby pool for water aerobic classes. Christy said the classes will move to VINE once the pool opens, along with open swimming and other activities. Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato also will rent the pool for therapy sessions during the week.

Pat Doyen of Vernon Center is among the VINE regulars looking forward to the pools opening. She has adrenomyeloneuropathy, a spinal cord condition that causes leg weakness, so water-based exercise makes leg lifts and toe raises easier. The pool has a lift to help her and others drop into the water.

Youre able to do exercises in the water that you cant do on dry ground, she said.

She plans to attend the opening and take her first dip soon after. Although Doyen couldnt make it, VINE invited the Old Main aerobics class to test out the pool last week along with several rubber duckies. The test run went swimmingly, as did inspections and water testing in recent days.

Carol Schneiderhan, working out at VINE Monday, said she too prefers water exercises. She does water aerobics while wintering down south, and said shell give it a try here once the pool opens.

You feel good and yet you get the resistance of the water, she said of the benefits.

Work on the mens and womens locker rooms remains before the grand opening. The pool itself, however, is ready to go.

Christy has watched the space go from storage and a literal hole in the ground to what it is now. With the pool being on the nonprofits wishlist for so long, she said its a surreal feeling to be so close to the finish.

Its amazing to think its actually going to happen," she said.

‘Hard road’ to return – Otago Daily Times

Posted: June 24, 2017 at 8:40 pm

Almost a year after having surgery on her ankle, Rebecca Fisher will represent New Zealand at a world aerobics competition.

Fisher tore lateral ligaments in her ankle in June last year, had surgery in November and spent the following four weeks in a cast.

To make matters worse, the injury happened a week before trials for a world championship event.

All that hard work just spiralled away, Fisher said.

Determined to return to aerobics and, hopefully, better than ever she spent months working on mending her ankle and was recently selected to represent New Zealand at the Sport Aerobic and Fitness World Championships.

For many, a serious injury would be career-ending, but Fisher did not let it stop her from achieving her goals.

It had been a hard road getting back into aerobics and her ankle was still not completely back to normal.

[It is] still quite weak, but it does not stop me from doing anything, she said.

Fisher has a background in gymnastics she competed for 10 years which she credited as being the backbone of her success in aerobics.

Despite taking a three-year break between sports, gymnastics definitely helped with the transition to aerobics, especially performing jumps, she said.

When she is not competing or training, Fisher teaches aerobics classes in Northeast Valley.

Fellow aerobics athlete Jade Fielding was also selected to represent New Zealand.

The pair had to submit a two-minute video each of their routine and were judged on their skill level and potential.

The Sport Aerobic and Fitness World Championships will be held in the Netherlands in October.

yoga aerobics: Fusion Yoga catches up with Bhopalis | Bhopal … – Times of India

Posted: June 22, 2017 at 11:40 am

The wave of yoga that is sweeping across the nation, has taken the city in its motion too. The ancient form of exercise is now gaining more favour from the city youth with its contemporary fusion forms like yoga-aerobics, power yoga, rhythmic yoga on music and inculcation of yogic aasans for relaxation technique during strength training. On International Yoga Day, Bhopal Times ventured out to understand these new forms of Yoga and find out about the enthusiasm over it.

The most popular and commonly found fusion is that of Yoga-Aerobics. Kavita Velury, a proponent of this form explains how it works. "Yoga, when alternated with aerobics becomes a wholesome exercise for the entire body. The high intensity aerobic moves, coupled with agile aasans, make sure to stretch out and impact upon every muscle of the body. Lot of youngsters join these classes for a fun way to fitness, as the peppy beats of yoga-aerobics numbers keep the energy up. The session is typically finished off with shavaasana which leave the person in a relaxing meditative state. This ensures that the body returns to its original state without too much stress." Shivi Verma, a 25-year-old French teacher who has been pursuing this form since the last two years says, "I had initially joined the programme to gain good health through yoga, but when I saw the energetic moves in the combined Yoga-Aerobics, I was drawn to it. And now I have learnt the entire set, and even if I am unable to attend classes, I practice it at home or wherever I am."
