Vietnam Deploys Dancers to Foil Protests
Posted: at 8:45 am
Anti-China protesters hoping to lay wreaths at a famous statue in the Vietnamese capital on Sunday were obstructed by an unusual sight of ballroom dancers and an energetic aerobics class held to a thumping sound system.
The demonstrators suspect the government deployed the dancers as a way to stop them from getting close to the statue and make their speeches inaudible. The few who tried to get close to the statue of Ly Thai To, the founder of Hanoi and a nationalist icon, were shooed away.
The protesters were marking the 35th anniversary of a bloody border war between China and Vietnam, where anger over Beijing's increasingly assertive territorial claims on islands in the South China Sea that Hanoi insists belong to it is already running high.
Relations with China, Vietnam's ideological ally and major trading partner, are a highly sensitive domestic political issue for Hanoi's rulers. They don't want anger on the street against China to spread to other areas of its repressive rule.
Nguyen Quang A, a well-known dissident, and others attending the rally in Hanoi on Sunday said the government deployed the dancers at the statue of Ly Thai To, and at another statue nearby, to prevent them gathering there. The tactic appeared to be part of a low-key approach to policing the event to avoid confrontation. There were scores of plainclothes security officers at the rally, but very few wearing uniform.
Quang said he asked the dancers to stop for a few minutes but that they refused.
Last year the government organized old women to hold a street protest to prevent a visiting U.S. government official from reaching a dissident's house, where he was due to talk to him about Hanoi's human rights record.
Around 70 people took part in Sunday's rally close to Hoan Kiem Lake in downtown Hanoi.
They shouted anti-China slogans, and took video and photos of each other to be posted on dissident blogs and Facebook pages. After around 90 minutes, they managed to lay their wreaths commemorating the Vietnamese dead in the war at a pagoda before dispersing.
Earlier anti-China protests in the capital have resulted in demonstrators being dragged into buses or scuffles. The government is keen to avoid such images spreading on social media because they make it seem it is defending China against nationalist anger, which is widespread among many Vietnamese.

Every day is Valentine’s Day: Couple married more than 60 years still works out together

Winona resident John Sturm carried three chairs from the equipment storage room at the Winona YMCA on Friday and placed them in the back row of the aerobics room before an exercise class started.
One chair was for a friend. One was for him. The other was for his wife.
Rose Sturm carried over hand weights and placed one set under her seat and the other set under her husbands.
It was a familiar routine for the couple. Rose, 84, and John, 82, have been married 63 years. They met as sophomores in high school in Illinois after Rose sat down at the same table as John.
Shed been there five minutes and you would have thought wed known each other for a long time, John said.
He asked her to a football game something he knew the young tomboy would be into. She said yes and then changed her mind.
But her mom made her go.
From then on, John said, as he lifted his hands and entwined his fingers, it grew.
Their young love bloomed and soon John was walking Rose home from school a two mile and three-and-a-half-block journey despite the fact he lived only a few blocks from the high school.
On Friday, they again walked side-by-side, participating in a YMCA Silver Sneakers class, which they go to at least three times a week.

Moderate exercise may reduce women’s risk of stroke more than strenuous exercise
Posted: at 12:04 pm
Moderate-intensity exercises such as power walking, golf and volleyball may be better for reducing stroke risk compared to strenuous activities such as swimming, running and aerobics, reported researchers presenting at the American Stroke Associations International Stroke Conference 2014.
Researchers analyzed data from the California Teachers Study, a cohort study of 133,479 female public school teachers and administrators, to see how exercise affected womens risk for stroke. Participants who reported doing moderate physical activity in the three years before they enrolled in the study had a 20 percent lower risk compared to women who reported no activity. Moderate physical activity could range from a half an hour of activity a week to greater than five hours a week.
Lead study author Sophia Wang noted a clear delineation of positive benefit for women who exercised moderately on average of one to two hours a week. Although strenuous activity was also considered, clear benefits were not as readily observed.
It has been reported that the more you move, the better; in our data, it was hard to tell, Wang, a professor in the department of population sciences at the Beckman Research InstituteCity of Hope in Duarte, Calif., told FoxNews.com. We dont quite see that nice dose-response you would expectfor someone who exercised more.
The analysis also found that while hormone therapy has been shown to increase risk of stroke, exercise can be used to modify the risk.
Its means that, for someone who needs to be on hormone therapy, moderate physical activity could potentially be a way to modify [her risk of stroke], Wang said. [She] could actually do something to try to reverse it somewhat.
