Bengal college admissions: Rush for English, zoology, psychology, mass communication; Sanskrit and philosophy find fewer takers – The Indian Express

English, zoology, psychology, and mass communication are some of the subjects students seek the most in the centralised online admission process for undergraduate courses in West Bengal colleges. On the other hand, Sanskrit, philosophy, and economics received the fewest number of applications.

College principals in the city have reported that the newly launched centralised admission portal has led to a significant increase in student applications. Following the release of the first merit list on July 12, the majority of available seats have already been filled.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Gokhale Memorial Girls College (GMGC) principal Atashi Karpha said the new admission process has eased the institutions burden. This definitely helped us in the admission process, which used to be tedious work as students had to stand in long queues to collect admission forms and submit them at a later date. The centralised online portal has solved this issue. So far, the response has been good. We have received most of the applications for English, psychology, history and geography, said Prof Karpha.

Surendranath College principal Dr Indranil Kar said the institute had received about 48,000 applications against the capacity of 3,052 seats after the first round of the admission process. This is a huge jump from the applications that we had received until last year. Admission to over 2,100 seats has already been completed (on July 16). Most applications have been received for English, Psychology, Journalism, Mass Communication, and BCom. In our college, the number of applicants is less for Sanskrit, philosophy and economics, Prof Kar said.

Lady Brabourne College principal Siuli Sarkar said, Sociology, English, microbiology, and zoology remain the first choices among students who applied to our college. So far, the response has been good, and we are hopeful that all seats will be filled.

New Alipore College principal Dr Jaydeep Sarangi said, We are very happy with the system. Many students have been motivated to apply for undergraduate courses from faraway places. Zoology, English, journalism and mass communication, and anthropology are the most sought-after subjects by the students. The subjects that have yet to see a surge in applications are Sanskrit and philosophy.

Asutosh College principal Manas Kabi told the newspaper that the college received about 60,000 applications for 3,380 seats. Admission to over 1000 seats is already over. English, psychology, zoology, journalism, and mass communication are front-runners in terms of getting applications. The least number of applications came for Sanskrit, said Kabi.

On June 19, the state government launched a centralised admission portal in various state government colleges and universities. The portal has been developed for admission to 7,230 undergraduate courses in government and government-aided institutions, including 16 universities, 461 colleges and a few other higher education institutions across West Bengal.

Education Minister Bratya Basu last week announced that in the first phase, 34,73,210 applications for various subjects in multiple colleges were received from 5,27,781 candidates, 2,99,800 of whom are females. About 98,089 applications were received from candidates based outside Bengal.

The second merit list for the first-phase admission processwhich was completed on July 7will be published on July 23. An up-gradation round or second-phase online admission process will commence on August 8.

Seth Anandram Jaipuria College principal Nandita Sen Chakraborty said, Admission to over 1,500 seats has been completed out of a total of 2,496 seats. philosophy and economics are two subjects getting inadequate responses from the applications. English, political science, journalism, and mass communication remain the most favourites among students, said Prof Chakraborty.

This Billionaire Predicted the Nvidia Stock Rally. Now He’s Making a Prediction Elsewhere With an Investment That’s Already Jumped 13% in the Last…

Posted: at 2:34 am

without comments

This is a rare case where average-net worth individuals can make a better investing decision than the billionaires.

Stanley Druckenmiller is one of the richest people in the world, with a net worth of $6.2 billion as of this writing, according to the "Real-Time Billionaires List" from Forbes. And he was able to pad his numbers with an extremely timely investment in Nvidia (NVDA -2.61%).

In the fourth quarter of 2022, Druckenmiller bought over 580,000 shares of Nvidia for his investment firm Duquesne Family Office. As of the first quarter of 2024, he's reduced his stake in Nvidia down to about 176,000 shares. But that's after riding his position to enormous gains.

NVDA data by YCharts

Druckenmiller swapped out shares of one of the most valuable companies on earth -- Nvidia -- with shares in something that's on the other end of the spectrum entirely. A May filing revealed that Duquesne Family Office had purchased a position in the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM -0.51%), roughly valued at $700 million right now.

Most investors are aware of the S&P 500 -- an index of 500 of some of the largest companies on the stock market. But fewer are aware of the Russell 2000 index, which is for small-cap stocks. In short, Druckenmiller expects shares of smaller companies to generally perform well from here.

There's good reason to believe this. According to Yardeni Research, valuations for large-cap stocks and small-cap stocks were comparable before the pandemic. But right now, the average forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio for the S&P 500 is about 22, whereas the forward P/E for the S&P SmallCap 600 is about 15 -- more than 30% cheaper.

Smart investors see this valuation gap between the big companies and the small ones. The small ones are being overlooked and are consequently cheap, which creates an opportunity that Druckenmiller apparently wants to exploit.

It may have been a timely bet. As the chart shows, performance for the Russell 2000 is quickly perking up, with the corresponding exchange-traded fund (ETF) jumping 13% in just the past month.

IWM data by YCharts

For investors looking to follow Druckenmiller's moves, they could buy shares of the iShares Russell 2000 ETF like he did. But remember that this is a bet on small-cap stocks in general. He likely made a generalized bet because he has too much money to invest. He can't pick individual small-cap stocks because he would acquire too big of a stake, running into regulatory issues and potentially moving the market.

By contrast, most regular investors can buy top small-cap stocks without worrying about controlling too much of the company. Identifying the best ideas in the small-cap space might be a better way to imitate Druckenmiller in this case. And I have three ideas for investors to consider: Xometry (XMTR -0.91%), Driven Brands (DRVN 1.14%), and PubMatic (PUBM 1.77%).

Xometry operates an online marketplace for the manufacturing industry and powers it with its artificial intelligence (AI) software. Without getting into the weeds, I believe that the numbers suggest that its AI-powered platform offers players in this space something special.

At the end of 2019, Xometry only had 11,500 active buyers total, and less than 300 of these spent more than $50,000 annually. But as of the first quarter of 2024, the company had 58,500 active buyers, with nearly 1,400 spending more than $50,000 annually. That's a lot of traction in a short time for a small platform. And it suggests that the platform is good enough to attract users.

Xometry has less than $500 million in annual revenue in a space valued in the hundreds of billions of dollars -- upside potential is likely if it's true that its platform offers users something better than what they're used to.

The company isn't profitable yet. But it's getting closer to positive cash flow with scale, which is why this is an interesting idea now. Once it's profitable, more investors will likely take notice, giving an advantage to investors today who noticed the improvement beforehand.

XMTR Revenue (TTM) data by YCharts

Driven Brands is a company that uses a roll-up strategy in the automotive space. It operates several different chains, including car washes, mechanic shops, and windshield repair. The idea is that by rolling up a bunch of companies under one parent company, it can benefit from brand recognition and economies of scale.

There are admittedly headwinds for Driven Brands right now. For example, in the first quarter of 2024, its car wash division accounted for 25% of revenue, but revenue in this segment was down about 8% year over year. And management only expects about 4% top-line growth for its business as a whole this year, which isn't very exciting.

Driven Brands has an enterprise value of $5 billion (for the record, this is technically a mid-cap stock, not a small-cap stock). And in 2024, management expects adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of at least $535 million. That means the company is valued at just 9 times its profits.

I mentioned enterprise value and EBITDA because these are metrics commonly used for companies with high levels of debt. Driven Brands has $2.9 billion in long-term debt, mostly because of its roll-up strategy. That's a heavy load, but it explains why it's cheap right now: Interest rates are up, lowering investor appetite for companies with debt.

I like Driven Brands because it operates boring businesses that are always in demand. And its strong adjusted profits make me comfortable with its debt. But if interest rates drop, I believe the market will give it more credit than it's giving it now. Economists believe it's increasingly likely that interest rates will drop before the end of 2024, which is why this is an idea to consider right now.

Finally, PubMatic is a programmatic advertising-technology (adtech) company that's as financially secure as any small-cap stock around. For investors worried about the economy, this is a small player that can press on through hard times.

Regarding its financial fortitude, PubMatic has $174 million in cash, equivalents, and short-term investments. The company doesn't have long-term debt and doesn't plan to. Moreover, it generates positive cash flow.

PubMatic is in a good place competitively as well. The company partners with publishers to get ad space sold. There are a lot of small players here. But with PubMatic's supply optimization product, it helps its customers go from many software providers to just two or three, leaving itself in the mix, of course.

Digital advertising is facing a slowdown as consumer spending cools. But this is routine from a macroeconomic perspective. Whether it's next week or next year, spending will rebound, and digital advertising will perk up, to PubMatic's benefit. And thanks to its financial fortitude, it can afford to calmly wait things out until then.

PubMatic's growth rate has accelerated recently, so I think this business will bounce back sooner rather than later. And that's why PubMatic joins Xometry and Driven Brands as smaller, undervalued companies I believe investors should consider buying now, following Druckenmiller's current conviction for small-cap stocks.

Bullet Brawl July 13, 2024: Naroditsky Wins 21st Brawl, Closes In On Nakamura’s All-Time Record – Chess.com

Posted: July 14, 2024 at 2:42 am

without comments

GM Daniel Naroditsky has moved one step closer to seizing the top spot on the all-time Bullet Brawlleaderboard after winning the latest edition ahead of GMs Arjun Erigaisi, Hikaru Nakamura, and 132 other titled players.

Now sitting on 21 victories, Naroditsky has won over $10,000 in prize money from Bullet Brawl tournaments since its inception and is just four wins shy of Nakamura's record of 25.

The $100 top women's prize was won by the prolific IM Meri Arabidze, who outpaced regulars FM Anastasia Avramidou and WGM Aleksandra Maltsevskaya, while the community brawl was won by AiriChesslol.

The next Bullet Brawl will commence on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at noon ET/18:00 CEST.

Standings

Naroditky's mastery of the arena format has never been in doubt but in 2024, the U.S.-based content creator has stepped it up a notch and learned how to frequently usurp the previously indomitable Nakamura.

The aura stemming from Naroditsky's recent performances has transcended the Twittersphere and one chess fan (Steve Leibrock) has called for Bullet Brawl to be renamed "DanyaBrawl," though it has to be said that the best pun involving the eventual winner is still the self-titled "Danya Naroblitzky."

Naroditsky kicked off the event with a punchy, 19-move win over the world number-four Arjun on the white side of the Caro-Kann Defense, Fantasy Variation. Opting for a move-six pawn gambit, Naroditsky confused Arjun and capitalized on several consecutive mistakes.

GMs Emin Ohanyan, Tuan Minh Le, Andrew Tang, and IM-elect Faustino Oro were all opponents that Naroditsky had to face in his first 10 games, and he scored 8/10 against them, allowing him to stay just in front of Nakamura, who scored 7/10 against similar opposition.

The quality that seems to separate Naroditsky from his GM colleagues is his ability to procure more miniatures, and this is what allowed him to surge further ahead of his chasers.

In the first half of the event, he was able to produce six miniatures; two lasted just 13 moves (one was also finished in 11 but this was the result of a catastrophic blunder). The first of these, against French FM Tristan Breuil, features an aesthetically pleasing knight sacrifice.

In the second game, against Spanish CM Javier Ruiz Vasquez, Naroditsky showed that aggressive moves that would be considered suboptimal in classical chess can turn into wrecking balls in quicker time controls.

Before Bullet Brawl began, Naroditsky showed off just how quick he is in a match against NM James Chirilov while streaming on Twitch.

Arjun's second-placed finish was also impressive as he played nine fewer games than the winner. Earlier in the day, Arjun was announced as the board one for team India at the 45th Chess Olympiad alongside GMs Gukesh Dommaraju, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, Vidit Gujrathi, and Pentala Harikrishna.

With three of the world's top 10 on this team, expect it to contest the podium come September.

Because the Olympiad will see many of the world's top players unavailable for two of September's Bullet Brawls, we may see the emergence of new winners.

Crypto Whales Buy The Dip As $22 Million In XRP Flows Out Of Binance – NewsBTC

Posted: at 2:39 am

without comments

XRP is starting to recover after bouncing off $0.405 on July 5, suggesting the early stages of a rebound may be brewing. The crypto market has been volatile lately, and XRP hasnt been spared. The cryptos price took a dip recently, dropping below $0.40 for the first time in over a year. It is interesting to note that on-chain data suggests that some whales may be accumulating in anticipation of a major comeback, which may even be responsible for the bounce off of $0.40.

Various on-chain data has shown large XRP transactions in the past few weeks to and from exchanges, suggesting some whales might be taking advantage of the dip to accumulate more tokens. Particularly, recent transaction alerts from Whale Alerts on social media platform X noted a recent transfer of 52.1 million XRP tokens worth $22.7 million from crypto exchange Binance into an unknown wallet.

The details of this $22 million XRP transaction are pretty fascinating and transfers like this are worth paying attention to as they can either increase or decrease buying and selling pressure. In this case, the movement away from Binance suggests a decrease in selling pressure on the exchange.

Interestingly, on-chain data shows that this wasnt an isolated transaction. Data shows a similar transaction occurred over the weekend, which saw the movement of 31.9 million XRP tokens from Binance into an unknown wallet. At the time of transfer, these tokens were worth $14.22 million.Furthermore, the blockchain analytics engine Blockchainalso revealed the transfer of 10 million XRP tokens worth $4.2 million from Binance into another unknown wallet.

At the time of writing, XRP is trading at $0.434. If the bulls regain control, the first minor resistance is at $0.45 and the next key resistance level to watch is around $0.50. Punching through that could open the floodgates for a rally towards $0.70 or even the $0.80 mark.

To fuel that kind of upside, XRP would need to see a surge in trading volume and buying pressure from both retail and institutional investors. Positive news from Ripples ongoing legal battle with the SEC could be a major catalyst. An outright win or settlement would remove a huge cloud of uncertainty hanging over XRP.

On the flip side, if the bears maintain their grip, the first support level to watch is around $0.40. This is because XRP recently bounced off $0.40 after an intense selloff last week. A break below that could see XRP tumble towards another support at $0.3750.

Inverclyde Council celebrates six years of serving local, organic food to pupils – Inverclyde Council

Posted: at 2:37 am

without comments

Inverclyde Councils catering team are celebrating after the council renewed its Food for Life Served Here (FFLSH) Bronze award for the sixthyear in a row.

The council, which first received the FFLSH Bronze award in 2019, is now serving around 5,000 nutritious, sustainable and locally-sourced Food for Life meals in its 20 primary schools and 19 nurseries every day.

Thats an incredible 95,000 meals per year all locally-sourced and freshly prepared for Inverclydes young people.

Local authorities receive the FFLSH certification following an independent assessment and inspection to ensure the food being served in schools across the local authority is good for pupils health, good for the environment and good for the local economy. The scheme is run by Soil Association Scotland and funded by Scottish Government.

Inverclyde contains some of the most deprived areas of Scotland and is the first local authority to extend universal free school meals to all primary pupils. For some children, their school meal is the only one they'll have that day. That's why it's so important to the council that the food they're getting is healthy and nutritious.

Inverclyde Council decided to go for the Food for Life Served Here Bronze award in primary schools to improve the quality of the region's school meals. Staff looked at every element of the existing school menus to see what needed to change. They worked with suppliers to switch to produce that met the Food for Life standards, rejigging the whole menu to fit both the budget and the Food for Life standards.

Councillor Jim Clocherty, Convener of Education and Communities, said: To have achieved this accolade for the sixth year in a row is a tremendous achievement and full credit goes to our education and catering staff.

They deliver healthy, nutritious meals to our young children every day, something Im sure many parents will agree is not always an easy task.

This award recognises the meals are locally-sourced and sustainable with a map showing where ingredients come from given to parents and on display in all school dining areas.

As a council we are committed to ensuring our young people have the best start in life and that includes free school meals from P1 right through to P7, the first local authority in Scotland to offer that.

Staff have since regularly taken part in the free training days offered by the Food for Life team to continue their education on the programme and how they can keep putting good food on the plate for Inverclydes young people.

Sarah Duley, Head of Food, Soil Association Scotland, said: Congratulations to Inverclyde for renewing their Food for Life Served Here Bronze Award for another year. This is a huge achievement and shows that staff are dedicated to providing pupils with a hot, nutritious meal thats healthy, freshly prepared and sustainably produced.

We are delighted to recognise Inverclyde for continuing to put more good food on school plates and for supporting Scotlands food businesses and Good Food Nation ambitions.

June Blitz and Memes – Chess.com

Posted: July 1, 2024 at 2:37 am

The letter W starts with a D.

~ Unknown Malcontent.

Welcome, everyone to another exhilarating edition of Blitz and Memes. If you're a fan of puzzles taken from amateur online blitz tournaments, then you have come to the right place, because that is what I do.

As always, the tactics have been selected from the Japan Chess Federation's monthly blitz tournament: TGIF Blitz. The tourney takes place on the 3rd Friday of every month, 21:00 JST, right here on chess.com. It consists of seven rounds of blitz, with a time control of 3+2; and is open to all JCF club members.

The memes on the other hand, have been divined from the infinite corners of the InterWebs...

This month's edition is coming to you a little late, as we had an issue with the tournament notification, meaning that some regular players were unaware of the start of the tournament. Nonetheless, we have five tactics which might prove a little easier to solve than our usual offerings. Good luck trying to solve all of them on the first try.

So, without further ado, let's get to the Blitz and Memes.

A Free Meal

Our first tactic is taken from the fourt-round encounter between Canping and packurkings. Canping, playing White, sees and opportunity that looks too good to be passed up, but perhaps the piece is poisoned?

You be the judge.

Get While the Getting is Good

This next tactic is a great example of taking what is offered, until something better is offered. In the third round mutaito-st, playing Black, captures free material until a shot at the killer blow appears.

Hint: If it's free to be taken, take it.

Using the F-word

Another tactic from mutaito-st, this time in the sixth round, here, playing White, he can take advantage of Black's last move to win material.

Do you understand how to properly use the F-word?

The Man in the Middle

In the sixth round IM rnanjo, playing Black, was able to take advantage of the poorly positioned White king.

Can you put an end to the man in the middle?

At the End of the Night

And at last, we come to the end of the night. Canping, playing White, is able to pull off something brilliant against none other than IM rnanjo.

Good luck with this one.

And that was it, that was June blitz and memes. Congratulations to IM rnanjo for winning with a 6/7 score despite not playing the first round.

Hopefully you found this edition a little easier and were able to get all five puzzles on the first attempt, congrats if you did, you are an excellent solver of puzzles taken from amateur blitz tournaments.

As always thanks for reading, and feel free to share these puzzles with your friends down at the bar or chess club.

Cheers, SheldonOfOsaka.

Lazavik Qualifies For SCC Main Event, Goes Undefeated On Day 2 – Chess.com

Posted: at 2:37 am

without comments

GM Denis Lazavik sailed through day two of the 2024 Speed Chess Championship Play-in, winning all three of his matches to qualify for the main event. He played 14 games total on Fridayagainst GMs Yuriy Kuzubov, M Pranesh, and Dmitry Andreikinand didn't lose a single one.

Lazavik is the 16th and final player to qualify for the main event, which begins on July 25. Specific players and match times will be shared once confirmed.

(See full results here.)

Eight players advanced from the Swiss qualifier on the previous day to the double-elimination Knockout on Friday. The players would contest one-on-one matches, with players in the Winners Bracket having "two lives" and those in the Losers Bracket having one.

The tournament's top seed Lazavik won both of his matches comfortably to enter the Grand Final.

He won his first match, against Kuzubov, with a dominant 3.5-0.5 score. While better known to squeeze out small advantages like a python, in game two the teenage GM showed that he's no slouch with tactics either:

Lazavik's next victim was Pranesh, the Swiss winner of the previous day, whom he defeated 3.5-1.5. In game four, Pranesh must have missed the unusual but strong 19.f4!, after which Lazavik won a pawn and the game.

Andreikin, who finished sixth in the Swiss tournament on the previous day, was simply unstoppable in the Losers Bracket. He won nine consecutive games and scored 13 wins out of 16 games, on his way to the Grand Final.

Andreikin put up a 4-0 score against GM Andrew Hong in the first round. In game three, he found a nice tactic to win material. Can you find it?

He then beat GM Alexander Zubov with another 4-0 score. His very first win featured some nice calculations in the rook endgame, as Andreikin found the cruncher 55...Rf1! just in time.

GM Yuriy Kuzubov, after losing the first two games of their match, was the player to cut Andreikin's streak at nine straight wins. While they were evenly matched in the blitz portion, Andreikin's bullet skills prevailed in the last two games. In the first bullet game, White's timid opening play was severely punished, and his queen found itself offsides on a2, never to move again.

The Losers Final vs. Pranesh featured five decisive games, but a convincing score of 4-1 for Andreikin. The most shocking victory was the first one, where Andreikin managed to win a theoretically drawn rook endgame even with a two-minute time deficit.

With that, the stage was set for the Grand Final. Both Lazavik and Andreikin were clearly the best players in their respective brackets on Friday.

Coming from the Losers Bracket, Andreikin needed to defeat Lazavik twice in order to win the qualifier, but he wouldn't even win one game. Lazavik won the first three games before settling for a draw and match victory.

Andreikin could have won game one, but mutual blindness in the following position allowed Lazavik to survive and, later, win.

Lazavik then outplayed his opponent in a rook and bishop endgame, before going on to win game three with a nice tactic against a demoralized Andreikin.

Seventeen-year-old Lazavik will join the likes of GMs Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, World Champion Ding Liren, and many others of the world's best speed-chess players. Asked by the chat whom he looks forward to playing, Lazavik gave a humble and honest reply: "For sure, it's not Hikaru, Magnus, and Alireza!"

With a FIDE blitz rating of 2553, he will be the second-to-last seedjust higher than GM Tuan Minh Le, who has a FIDE blitz rating of 2494. Every other participant boasts at least a FIDE blitz rating of 2600, and most are over 2700. But if there's one thing we know about speed chess, it's that things never entirely go according to plan. Catch the action in about a month from now!

How to review?

You can review the broadcast on Twitch and YouTube. The games can also be checked out on our dedicated events page.

The live broadcast was hosted by GM Robert Hess.

The Speed Chess Championship is Chess.com's most important speed chess event. Some of the biggest names in chess compete to determine the best speed chess player in the world. The main event started with qualifiers on June 27 and 28 and concludes with the first-ever live Final on September 8 in Paris. The games are played with time controls of 5+1, 3+1, and 1+1. The prize fund is $173,000.

Bullet Brawl June 29, 2024: 13-Year-Old Erdogmus Becomes First Junior To Win Bullet Brawl – Chess.com

Posted: at 2:37 am

without comments

After progressing to the ChessKid Youth Championships Knockout earlier in the day, 13-year-old GM-elect Yagiz Erdogmus has commanded another headline with a historic Bullet Brawl victory on Saturday. Scoring 220 points, he finished well ahead of second-place GM Oleksandr Bortnyk (190) and Canada's GM Eric Hansen (184) as well as 107 other titled players.

With this result, Erdogmus became the first IM and junior to win the event and has joined an exclusive list that features eight unique winners. IM Meri Arabidze won the $100 best women's prize while Cesar Frank Talledo Lagos took out the community event.

The next Bullet Brawl will commence on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at noon ET/18:00 CEST.

Standings

While most 13-year-olds were enjoying their weekend off from school, Erdogmus kept busy beating many of the world's best chess players in the latest edition of Bullet Brawl. In a field stacked with the likes of GMs Tuan Minh Le, Matthias Bluebaum, Sam Sevian, and Jose Martinez, Erdogmus' performance serves as a reminder that age plays second-fiddle to talent when it comes to chess ability.

A win over Le marked the perfect start for Erdogmus who backed this up by scoring 4/6 against GMs in his first 10 games of the arena. The Turkish sensation became a true contender when he dispatched both IM Renato Terry and Martinez in 25 and 22 moves, respectively.

To cement his position at the top, Erdogmus strung together two 21-game unbeaten streaks, the first of which featured no fewer than six miniatures. Notably, one was an 18-move victory over the former world junior champion GM Pablo Zarnicki.

Bortnyk, who was a top contender for first place, kept in touch with the lead while streaming on Twitch but could only manage 1/4 against Erdogmus, with most of their games descending into chaos and ending with time scrambles.

Erdogmus' super Saturday even seemed to catch the attention of the longtime world number-one GM Magnus Carlsen who challenged him to a blitz match at the conclusion of the event. Though the score heavily favored Carlsen (12.5-3.5), Erdogmus did manage to pick up a few wins.

Boasting a FIDE rating of 2569, Erdogmus is the 12th-highest-rated U18 player in the world and is the fifth-highest-rated player from Turkiye. Although GMs Hikaru Nakamura and Daniel Naroditsky did not participate in this week's brawl, they will no doubt take notice of Turkiye's emerging prodigy.

Bucharest: After missing out on opportunities to win, Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa finally broke through and scored a hard-earned victory over Dutchman Anish Giri in the fourth round of the Superbet Classic chess tournament here.

World Championship challenger D Gukesh, playing with black, had little trouble holding off Firouzja Alireza of France to a draw on a day when Fabiano Caruana scored his second victory in the tournament at the expense of wild-card Deac Bogdan-Daniel of Romania.

Caruana became the sole leader and also got back to number two in live world rankings.

Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi's hunt for an elusive victory continued for the fourth day running as he was held to a draw by Wesley So of Romania while Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan also signed peace with Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France in the 10-player round-robin tournament.

The event, a brain-child of former world champion Garry Kasparov, saw the first move made by the former world number one and he chose to watch the game between Alireza and Gukesh.

While this was drawn without much ado, Praggnanandhaa was quick to spot an unforced error by Giri to score his first victory in the USD 350,000 prize money tournament.

Giri turned 30 in the previous round but had mentioned that it was not easy to celebrate when he has Praggnandhaaa as black on the next day.

As if taking a cue, Praggnanandhaa faced the Queen's gambit and capitalised on a simple tactical error by the Dutchman to win a rook for a minor piece in the queen less middle game.

The complications were not so many thereafter but Praggnanandhaa faced some stiff resistance and Giri came closer to a draw only to blow it away after 80 moves.

With five rounds still to come in the super-tournament, Caruana leads the tables with three points out of a possible four and the Indian duo of Pragg and Gukesh are a half point behind.

Vachier-Lagrave, Wesley So, Nepomniachtchi and Alireza are all sharing the fourth spot on two points each whiel Giri and Abdusattorov are on 1.5 sharing the eighth spot. Local boy Deac Bogdan-Daniel is in the last spot on one point and has some catching up to do.

It turned out to be an easy game for Gukesh out of another Queen's gambit accepted opening of the day.

Playing black, the Indian equalised easily out of opening and after the trade of queens did not have much to worry about.

Alireza tried his hands at complications to no avail and the end result was a draw through perpetual check. This was also the first game to end in the day.

Caruana was clearly the better player in his duel against Bogdan-Daniel.

The Nimzo Indian by the Romanian met with some sterner test in the opening and Caruana used his Bishop pair to optimal use in the ensuing endgame. This one lasted a mere 34 moves.

Results round 3:

D Gukesh (Ind, 2) drew with R Praggnanandhaa (Ind, 1.5); Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (Fra, 1.5 drew with Firouza Alireza (Fra, 1.5); Anish Giri (Ned, 1.5) drew with Ian Nepomniachtchi (FID, 1.5); Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Uzb, 1) drew with Fabiano Caruana (Usa, 2); Wesley So (Usa, 1.5) drew with he chose to make it on Deac Bogdan-Daniel (Rom, 1). A rare Satoshi era Bitcoin miner address woke up after being dormant for 14 years, sending over $3 million worth of BTC to Binance.

An early Bitcoin miner moved 50 BTC, equivalent to $3.05 million, marking a rare transaction from the Satoshi era. According to data from Lookonchain, the address 1PDTDm3Jcm sent the funds to Binance on Jun. 27.

Blockchain transaction history indicates that the miner obtained 50 BTC in July 2010, a few months after the Bitcoin network launched.

A miner wallet woke up after being dormant for 14 years and deposited 50 $BTC($3.05M) to #Binance 7 hours ago.

The Satoshi era address refers to addresses that were active during the early days of the Bitcoin network, specifically from the time when the first cryptocurrency was created by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009 until around 2011, which is when Satoshi Nakamoto mysteriously disappeared.

This is not the first instance of old Bitcoin wallets reactivating. Several addresses from the Satoshi era have shown activity since early 2023. In July of last year, a wallet dormant for 11 years transferred $30 million worth of Bitcoin to other wallets. In August, another wallet moved 1,005 BTC to a new address.

In March 2024, another long-inactive miner transferred funds after 14 years, with part of the transaction ending up at the crypto exchange Coinbase.
