Welcome to a week that bridges the etheric with the earthly, imagination with action, and surrender with new beginnings. These are the last days of dreamy Pisces season, our final hours of magic and intuition, before we restart the astrological year with the fiery sign of Aries. The dance between the intangible and the tangible continues even as Venus and Saturn come together in our cosmos and Mars enters the waters of Pisces.
March 17: Neptune cazimi March 19: Sun enters Aries; Moon enters Cancer March 20: Moon enters Leo March 21: Venus conjunct Saturn March 22: Mars enters Pisces; Moon enters Virgo
We begin the week with a day of dreaming, surrender, and ethereal flow thanks to the occurrence of Neptune cazimi on March 17, 2024. The term cazimi is an Arabic word meaning in the heart of the Sun. In astrology, it has come to mean the moment when a planet comes together in the sky with the Sun, seemingly sitting in the center of it. A cazimi is understood to contain the essence of realignment and renewal.
In astrology, the Sun is our life force, our spirit, our spark of energy that shines from within. As it comes together with Neptune while in the waters of Pisces, we learn that it is through surrender that we are reborn, and it is through allowing ourselves to be supported by something beyond the tangible realm that things begin to transform in the tangible realm.
We are invited to become one with this flow, to release any tightness in our chest or busyness in our minds. To let ourselves be held by something larger, something that washes away what is not ours to hold onto in this moment. This cosmic event reminds us that sometimes it is through unclenching our will and allowing things to be that completely transforms what is. This week welcomes a slow yoga flow, a surrender-filled meditation, a prayer to something beyond our awareness, and a continual reminder to let yourself take a long, slow breath out.
Neptune cazimi takes place toward the end of Pisces season, in what could be considered our final days of surrender, release, and dancing with the unseen in preparation for renewal. Pisces season represents a return to that from which we all originate, whereas Aries season represents our rising from these waters.
When the Sun enters Aries on March 19, 2024, it brings with it the astrological new year and the spring equinox. As the Sun offers new warmth, we, too, are welcomed into a season of blooming and self-expression. Aries is inspiration. It is fierce courage. It is the will to exist, the urge for self-expression, and the pulse of life that emanates through all. Aries is aliveness itself.
This season welcomes movement, action, expression, and the bold assertion of our dreams into the life we are creating and the person we are becoming. Aries season summons from within us the fiery courage to claim ourselves, our path, our hopes, and our lives.
RELATED: What Aries Season Means for You, According to Your Astrological Sign
While Aries continues to influence our cosmos as well as ourselves, there continues to be movement and magic in the realm of Pisces. Venus entered the water sign last week on March 11, 2024, and will remain there until April 4, 2024. Venus is art. She is beauty, love, balance, and harmony. Venus is healing, receptivity, and blessings. While in Pisces, she is compassionate, intuitive, creative, and soulful and channels a deep and vast love for life itself as well as all that is held within it.
Meanwhile, Saturn has been building a home for itself in the last sign of the zodiac since March 2023 and will continue to do so until February 2026. Saturn governs this tangible world. It is discipline, structure, boundaries, and responsibility.
This week, these two planetary enter into a conjunction in the mystical sign on March 21, 2024. As the two planets come together in partnership, they do so with balance. During this time, both love and commitment are required, compassion and boundaries, and creativity and discipline, whether in our relationships, our creative endeavors, our growth, and so much more.
This conjunction highlights the same dance that imbues this entire week of operating in both the seen and unseen, the energetic and the tangible, the vision and the responsibility for that vision.
As Aries season ignites and emboldens our desires and related visions, this conjunction brings healing to how we relate to the discipline, responsibility, and commitment required for those visions to become our reality. Whether that vision is a relationship, a business or career endeavor, health, easy of mind, flowing finances, or anything else, allow this day to bring love into the practical aspects of life.
A day after the Venus-Saturn conjunction, Mars enters Pisces. The ruler of Aries, Mars represents our drive to take action. It is our courage, ambition, and assertion. Like Aries, Mars turns up the volume on our desires just as it turns up our life force to claim and create those desires.
Whereas Pisces brings us into the ethereal potentials and dreams in our unconscious, Mars claims these potentials and directs its life force into the manifestation of them. While in Pisces, Mars connects our conscious desires with those of our soul. Its as if a conversation is taking place.
Mars remains in Pisces until April 30, 2024. This time will continue the dance between the energetic and the tangible and invite collaborations between turning to something higher for guidance and taking action. It encourages courage through self-compassion. It compels us to claim ourselves and our dreams as love letters to the unknown.
This week invites you to explore your relationship with the sacred. It invites you to allow that space to imbue who you are as well as who you are becoming. It invites release and surrender as you step into more of yourself. And it invites you into the unconscious, the mystical, and the unknown so that you may begin to create your life from the wisdom and guidance received from those spaces.
As the Sun shifts from Pisces to Aries, life will begin to spark with enthusiasm and new beginnings, yet invitations will continue to come from the unseen realms of Pisces. Let these messages act as a reminder that you are supported, cheered, and held beyond your awareness and that there is sacredness to be experienced when you heed the inexplicable whispers of your heart and take action to make them real.

MIND BODY SPIRIT: Welcome Villain Films Acquires Worldwide Rights to Yoga Horror. Releasing Across Digital Platforms May 7th! – ScreenAnarchy

I come from a faith-based family and upbringing so this idea of yoga horror tickles me, even within the constructs of the found footage genre. The notion of ancient rituals unleashing unholy entites is not new, I've just never seen it linked to the peaceful and purposeful practice of yoga. This is a first, for me.Oh, I can hear all those church leaders and elders now, "See? See what happens when you open yourself to Eastern practices and New Age religions?".
Alex Henes and Matthew Merenda's found footage horror Mind Body Spirit has been acquired by Welcome Villain Films, who will distribute the horror flick through digital platforms worldwide on May 7th. It looks like it will make one more festival appearance at the Unnamed Footage Festival at the end of the month, with the directors and their star,Sarah J. Bartholomew, in attendance.
Welcome Villain Films, the genre studio that released last years MALUM and BEATEN TO DEATH, has announced their latest acquisition: the supernatural screenlife horror shocker MIND BODY SPIRIT. Since then its garnered numerous favorable reviews from festival appearances across the country (including Chattanooga 2023), with genre critics touting that the film cleverly plays with the subgenres established conventions to create something spooky, smart, and wholly entertaining (Mary Beth McAndrews, Dread Central).
Alex, Matt, and myself come from the entertainment marketing world, so we relished the opportunity to flex all of our experience and storytelling prowess by crafting a film that embodies everything we love about the genre, says Dan Asma, producer of MIND BODY SPIRIT. Were beyond excited to partner with Welcome Villain Films and to get our twisted creation in front of a wider audience thats eager for original storytelling.

All of Us Are Strangers: How love is the most revolutionary act of self-awareness – The Federal
Posted: at 2:38 am
Andrew Haighs All of Us Strangers, which is still playing in some theatres, impressed upon me a lesson that I have learned with a lot of heartache over the last couple of years: Love is, in its simplest form, the ability to see and, in turn, be seen. Andrew Scott plays Adam, a lonely screenwriter in London, with a traumatic past. In the first few minutes themselves, the dimly-lit frames and scenes carefully induce a tangible feeling of heaviness.
Adam is visibly alone in his life. Time passes outside his window as the lights shift on the horizon, but in his apartment, time exists in a vacuum takeout food sits morosely in tin foils in the refrigerator, he sleeps on his couch, with no one to cover him with a blanket. Suddenly, his doorbell rings and the nauseating ghetto of loneliness is punctured He opens the door of his apartment to Paul Mescals Harry in a baby pink jumper, drunk and desperate, appealing to Andrew Scotts Adam to let him in both into his apartment and, by extension, his life.
Love, the movie suggests, is also the simple but infinitely brave act of keeping the door open long enough for someone to come in, and build a home with us. But Adam closes the door on an unnervingly starved and alone Harry, perhaps to protect himself from his clearly sexual advances, or simply because he is imprisoned by his loneliness so much that the choice to open the door is not even real to him he must keep the literal door closed too, as a comorbid condition of that loneliness.
Queer loneliness
After decades of struggles, protests and brutalisation, LGBTQ+ issues have become relatively more public and accessible. But we are far from addressing, let alone understanding how queerness is married to loneliness. The film makes sure that despite the bustling crowds around Adam whether he is on a train or in a club he is almost always alone.
Adam lives in this menacing high-rise, which is also depicted on the posters, but each window represents loneliness, more than other lives, because for all its splendour, modernity is after all a poor excuse for crippling communal estrangement and mutual disconnection from each other. In one of the most poignant scenes in the movie, Harry tells Adam: I always felt like a stranger in my own family anyway. Coming out just puts a name to the difference that had always been there.
The title of Andrew Haighs ghost romance suggests that all of us remain strangers to each other, because somehow the act of knowing the other even within our families comes at the discomfort of effort. To open our world to the possibility that the others own world too exists. Attitude magazine described the movie as a tender examination of love in the shadow of shame. Which perhaps also comes close to describing the radical costs of love: at so many levels, it requires us to wade through the complicated shame of vulnerability which is so tangibly demanding a feeling, perhaps especially for the LGBTQ community.
Everyone wants to be seen, to be found, but for queer people, the experience is often so postponed that they close themselves off from the possibility itself. Or worse, fear being vulnerable, lest they expose themselves to the defeat of rejection or abandonment a feeling they are already made to feel from a young age. Families often abandon them or stop talking to them out of anger, friends more often than not drift apart, relationships are somehow so much more challenging
Coming out the constant confessional nature of it notwithstanding is one of the most difficult things to do when queer individuals know how keeping the silence and repressing their truth buys them peace at home. In one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the movie, Adam comes out to his father, and tells him how he was bullied in school: Theyd call me a girl. Refuse to play with me. Flick drawing pins at my face and flush my head down the loo. But Adam never told any of this at home as a child. As so many queer children dont. To avoid their parents the disappointment, perhaps, and so many times to avoid confronting the pain themselves. Silence and loneliness reinforce each other.
To love, to be loved
Adam (as so many of us will identify with) describes his helpless loneliness as a knot in his heart. It is falling in love with Harry, finally, which not only reveals the knot and its smothering force, but also permits Adam the tools to unravel this knot. Often queer individuals develop a structure/ghetto of loneliness around themselves as a survival mechanism. Growing into ones queerness, then, is so frequently (and sometimes tiringly) about unmaking and unlearning these survivalist behaviours.
There are so few happy queer stories, as Andrew Sean Greer has often talked about. And while Haighs movie is incredibly heavy with emotions, theres something so reassuring, uplifting about it too. In the simplest way, it is a testament to the triumphant quality of love, which even through the worst times or perhaps especially through the worst times can protect us so often from ourselves.
With an almost shocking ability to anticipate the next feeling, and present it with stunning accuracy, Haighs screenplay (available to read online) registers moments of tenderness and grief, and the heartbreaking process of healing old wounds with a double-layered plot. While Adam and Harrys relationship builds, Adam also finds his own past clouding over the tender bliss of new-found love. Adam tells Harry at one point how all the scabs that seem to have healed, really dont. It doesnt take much to be back there again, does it? Skin all fucking raw, feeling how you used to feel.
Haighs screenplay, inspired by Taichi Yamadas ghost novel Strangers, rallies for a simple message: While love begins with a sort of suspension of logic, it is indeed the most revolutionary and violent act of self-awareness. It makes us weak as it breaks all of our walls, and reveals to us the embarrassingly vulnerable and fragile children we are at heart. But isnt that itself paradoxically one of the most powerful things that can happen to us? Exposing to us the awful realisation that in the pursuit of self-preservation, we complied with the conditions of a cruel world, and forgot that that child exists within us who just wants to be loved, and to love.
The language of tenderness
One of my favourite scenes from the movie is when Adam and Harry talk about their respective childhoods after making love passionately, but its not the sex that builds intimacy as Haighs note in the screenplay directs: More than sex, its a mutual understanding of something shared that brings deepening intimacy. Harry leans in and kisses him.
While loneliness is one of the most challenging conditions of queerness, it seems that its consequences are far worse when we forget to care about ourselves. So often, whether its after enduring the grand heartbreaks of a breakup or everyday anguishes of living, we give up on ourselves, because its the easiest thing to do. And so often we also convince ourselves that we deserve our loneliness, too.
Haighs project with this movie seems to be to remind all of us strangers that we are capable of love, and being loved. That we too can find (or stumble upon) care and safety, even in this not-very-promising swipe-right world of modern relationships because these are the basic necessities of living and enduring, and indeed what else can we put all our hopes on, if not love?
Every response to the movie that I have read online has been deeply moving too, with so many people writing about how Adams story reflected theirs. How the loneliness of the movie became theirs. How the promise and incredible power of love is something they crave too. One review just said that they felt held by the movie. The language of touch is one of our most profound achievements, I would argue, because in so many ways its also something that makes us real to each other. All of Us Strangers triumphs in this understanding, too.
Much like Haighs phenomenal series released a decade ago, Looking which masterfully explores the parabolas of queer desire, with their crests and valleys All of Us Strangers presents passion with a careful intensity, fletched with mutual care and love. Intimacy that is more than physical, always. And so a movie about a London-based screenwriter finds resonance across borders because we all experience loneliness in similar ways, and we all know that to be cared for, and to care for someone is what can save us, change us, and keep us going in a burning world. Tennessee Williams wrote that we have not long to love: a night, a day and that we live in a perpetually burning building, and what we must save from it, all the time, is love.
All of Us Strangers is the promise of a haunting forever, especially when we are all yearning for a forever that never seems to exist or is not enough. It is, in the most gut-wrenching, but also reassuring way, a guide, not a warning. That love is, in its most profound state, an awful feeling that pushes us to madness. But its all we have, and thats always enough.

In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare and wellness, weight loss remains a perennial goal for many, underscored by the global rise in obesity rates. Traditional methods of weight loss, including diet and exercise, while effective for some, have often fallen short for others, leading to a quest for alternative solutions. Enter the era of GLP-1 medications, a revolutionary advancement in the pharmacological approach to weight management. This comprehensive guide delves into the intricacies of GLP-1 medications, their mechanisms, benefits, and the role they play in modern weight loss strategies.
The introduction of GLP-1 (Glucagon-like peptide-1) medications marks a significant milestone in the field of weight management. Unlike conventional weight loss drugs, GLP-1 medications target the bodys physiological processes to promote weight loss, offering a novel approach for those struggling with obesity. The efficacy of these medications lies in their ability to mimic the action of the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1, which plays a crucial role in regulating appetite and food intake.
GLP-1 medications work by slowing gastric emptying, thereby prolonging the sensation of fullness after eating. This mechanism not only helps reduce overall calorie intake but also improves the bodys response to sugars, aiding in the management of blood glucose levels. The result is a dual-action approach that addresses both weight loss and metabolic health.
Among the GLP-1 medications available, Wegovy, Ozempic, and Zepbound have garnered attention for their promising results. Wegovy and Zepbound, in particular, have been FDA-approved specifically for weight loss, demonstrating an average weight reduction of 15% to 20% when combined with diet and exercise modifications. Ozempic, while primarily approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, has also been prescribed off-label for weight loss, showcasing the versatility of GLP-1 medications in addressing various health concerns.
For further details on the mechanism of action and approval status of these medications, consider visiting the source.
As with any medication, GLP-1 medications come with their share of potential side effects and safety considerations. Common side effects reported by users include nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, stomach pains, constipation, and diarrhea. These side effects are generally mild to moderate in intensity and tend to decrease over time as the body adjusts to the medication.
However, its imperative to note that GLP-1 medications may also carry serious risks, including the possibility of thyroid tumors. Individuals with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2) are advised against using these medications due to the increased risk. Therefore, a thorough evaluation of ones health history and a discussion with a healthcare provider are essential steps before embarking on treatment with GLP-1 medications.
For a comprehensive overview of the safety information and potential side effects associated with GLP-1 medications, please refer to the safety information section.
The process of obtaining GLP-1 medications is streamlined and patient-centric, with platforms like Ro offering a comprehensive approach to weight loss. The journey begins with an online consultation, where individuals share their health history and weight loss goals. A Ro-affiliated provider then reviews the information and, if appropriate, orders a metabolic lab test to assess the individuals current health status.
Based on the lab results and overall eligibility, the provider may prescribe a GLP-1 medication, tailored to the individuals unique biology and health needs. Ro also assists in navigating insurance coverage to help mitigate the cost of medication, providing an insurance concierge service for those who wish to use their insurance. For those without insurance coverage or facing denial, cash payment options are available.
The ongoing care and support offered by Ro underscore the commitment to not just initiating treatment but ensuring sustained success. This includes on-demand provider access, medication management, and tools to track progress, fostering an environment of continuous care and support.
For more information on how Ro facilitates access to GLP-1 medications and the associated costs, visit the Ro website.
The impact of GLP-1 medications on weight loss is not just a matter of clinical trials and statistics; its vividly illustrated through the stories of individuals who have experienced significant transformations. Dr. Pepper, a Ro Ambassador, and Stacie, a Ro member, are two such examples. Dr. Pepper lost 30 lbs within a year, while Stacie shed 49 lbs in just six months, both attributing their success to the GLP-1 medication as part of Ros Body Program.
These stories highlight the life-changing potential of GLP-1 medications when combined with dedicated support and a commitment to lifestyle changes. They serve as a testament to the power of modern medicine in facilitating weight loss and improving overall health and well-being.
The advent of GLP-1 medications represents a significant leap forward in the fight against obesity and its associated health complications. By offering a scientifically backed, effective, and safe option for weight management, GLP-1 medications have opened new avenues for individuals seeking to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
As research continues and more individuals turn to these medications for weight loss, the landscape of obesity treatment is poised to evolve further. The stories of those who have successfully navigated their weight loss journeys with the help of GLP-1 medications are just the beginning. With continued innovation and a focus on patient-centered care, the future of weight loss looks promising, offering hope and tangible solutions for millions struggling with obesity worldwide.
In conclusion, GLP-1 medications are reshaping the approach to weight loss, offering a blend of efficacy, safety, and support that aligns with the needs of the modern patient. As we move forward, the integration of these medications into comprehensive weight management strategies will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in addressing the global obesity epidemic, improving health outcomes, and enhancing the quality of life for many.
For additional insights into weight loss strategies and the role of GLP-1 medications, consider exploring resources from reputable health organizations and medical platforms, ensuring a well-rounded understanding of this groundbreaking approach to weight management.

Know About Olivia Munn!
Born on the 3rd of July, 1980 Olivia Munn is an American actress, who has played roles in blockbuster movies like Date Night, Iron Man 2, The Predator, and many more.
She became famous after playing a three-season-long portrayal of Sloan Sabbith in Aaron Sorkins political drama The Newsroom on HBO.
Olivia was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and has had four surgeries in the last 10 months, two of which were double mastectomies.
Women who are at a very high risk of getting breast carcinoma ( those with BRCA gene mutation), go through surgery, in which both bosoms are removed at the same time, to remove the carcinogens or reduce the risks. This surgery is called a bilateral or a double mastectomy. Olivia had to go through the same painful procedure, to minimize her cancer risks.
Lying on her hospital bed, she tried to inspire the world by sharing a photo of her post-surgery, in which she revealed more about her condition and said:
She took a genetic test last year in February, which checks for 90 different cancer genes - the test score came high and the test was negative for all the genes.
After this, she had several imaging tests and a biopsy too. Later it was found out that she has breast cancer on both her breasts. She went through a double mastectomy and has had multiple surgeries to date.
Olivia kept it private for some time before disclosing it to her fans and the world, stating:
While expressing her gratitude towards her family and friends who have supported her in this battle, Olivia also thanked her partner John Mulaney for supporting her through every surgery she underwent during this difficult time.
All over the world, her fans and well-wishers have appreciated her move of awareness and support, especially women who are victims of breast cancer.
Let us wish Olivia a speedy recovery and appreciate her bravery and resilience in her battle against breast cancer. Get well soon Olivia and may the odds always be in your favor.

My life changed forever after an accident but this exercise got me walking again – The Telegraph
Posted: at 2:37 am
I was just living moment-to-moment and dealing with each phase, slowly and determinedly getting myself back to fitness. But once I was off crutches and starting to swim, I realised I was quite traumatised. The accident, surgery and rehabilitation had left me drained and depressed. As it became clear how much my life had changed, I seriously lost my mojo.
I had always been a very active person, riding motorbikes and hiking in mountains.
Once I could walk, I went running to build strength, but a half-marathon proved too much I started getting problems with the foot again. The consultant said no more marathons and my confidence took another knock.
Thats when I started doing yoga intensively, four or five classes a week, with my old teacher. It felt good to be back on the yoga mat a familiar place, where I felt calm, doing moves that I knew and trusted. Over time I saw a change in what my foot could do. Yoga gave me back much of the strength, flexibility and movement that Id lost. Gradually my confidence returned, and I felt like Id come back to myself.
Your perspective shifts when something so life-changing happens. Lying in bed for all those weeks after the accident, wondering whether Id be able to hike mountains like before, whether Id even walk OK, facing all those worries about how my post-injury life might be different, left me determined that the accident wasnt going to define who I was in the future.
I wasnt going to be somebody who couldnt live my life how I wanted. So, when I eventually trained to be a yoga teacher, I didnt let my life-long fear of exams stand in my way and now fully qualified, I love sharing the power of yoga in my classes and on my retreats.
My foot will never be normal again. It needs regular exercise, otherwise I get pain, especially if I sit still too much. Theres a constant throb and the bones and nerves sit differently than before, so Im always moving my toes and flexing my foot. But thanks to daily yoga my foot is so much stronger than it could have been. I know its now as good as its going to be, and I cant ever see myself stopping doing yoga if I did it would just stiffen up, as would I!
Sadly, Ive had to give up certain things. I dont ride my motorbike anymore and I cant run. Ive just had to accept I cant do everything I could do, but I can still live a lovely life. Yoga has really added to that, giving me opportunities I never thought I would have. Its given me the stability and strength to tackle whatever I may face in the future.
As told to Marina Gask

Vegan OG Of The Valley – Los Angeles – LAist
Posted: at 2:36 am
If you have lunch at Follow Your Heart vegan cafe on Sherman Way in Canoga Park, you may see a friendly-looking guy hovering around. Hes there for a few hours every day, doing a little bit of everything.
Its kind of my job to eat different things on the menu to ensure consistency. One cook teaches another cook and recipes totally change.
Take note that man is not just the food taster. Hes Bob Goldberg, now a wise elder to the vegan food scene in Los Angeles. He began Follow Your Heart with friends in 1970, as a vegetarian hippie hangout in the valley.

Today, more than 50 years later, its a vegan grocery store and diner, with a college town food co-op vibe, selling plant-based diner food: sandwiches, pot pies, chili cheese fries. And even more importantly, Goldberg has had a massive impact on plant-based eating, creating Vegenaise and starting the Follow Your Heart and Earth Island brands.
The Follow Your Heart cafe first started as a juice bar in the back of Johnny Weissmullers American Natural Foods on Owensmouth. Weissmuller was an Olympic gold medalist and star of the Tarzan movies.
In 1973, Goldberg, along with partners Paul Lewin, Spencer Windbiel and Michael Besanon, bought out the market, and got rid of all the meat and dairy products.
When we first started, this strip was still Antique Row wed get thrifted plates from the Salvation Army, he remembers.
The place soon attracted a loyal following, with people traveling long distances to the West Valley, because back then, as Goldberg says, "vegetarian places were few and far between."
By 1976, they outgrew the store and moved into a former butcher shop, which is the current Sherman Way location.
"I grew up in a family of grocers, says Goldberg. His grandfather Sam Kapitanoff opened Crystal Foods shortly after the turn of the century when he arrived in Beloit, Wisconsin from Eastern Europe very New Agey name, he laughs. Hed visit the store as a kid with his parents from Chicago, an hour-and-a-half away.
The other side of Goldbergs family was in the model airplane kits industry. In those days, Carl Goldberg Products was a hugely inspiring company for would-be aeronautical engineers. However, model planes later fell out of popularity in the 70's with the emergence of the space program. I was a national champion as a child, he says with a smile.

In 1967, Goldberg got drafted into the army. Initially, he thought hed have to travel overseas, but he received a last minute change of orders to join the Army Band. (Goldberg had played trumpet since he was 10 and studied music at Indiana University).
Goldberg says he wasnt yet critical of the war in Vietnam. It was a bad time a turbulent time. But I was on board for everything. I didn't question authority ... that came later.
In the barracks he was assigned to a room with one other guy who had the "opposite of my background. Hed been in trouble with the law and a judge had given him the choice to go to jail or enlist. His barrack-mate showed him something rolled up in aluminum foil he didn't know what it was. "I'd never seen marijuana, he says. They went into a closet and got high.
A moment later Bob remembers sitting down on his bed and thinking Everything I know was wrong it just hit me. I remember an overwhelming feeling that I'd been lied to.
In the Army Band hed travel to midwestern states playing a lot of parades, Bob pauses, but also Taps at a lot of funerals. This experience made him see the impact of what war can do, which led to his embrace of meat-less eating.
I became vegetarian for moral reasons. I was against unnecessary killing. And sometimes the practice of killing animals can lead to the killing of people.
Out of the Army, in 1969, Goldberg drove across the country to Los Angeles. He spent the first few weeks on a buddys couch in Woodland Hills before finding a place up the street from Johnny Weissmullers.
Goldberg was glad to find somewhere he could get camaraderie and vegetarian food. I was meeting my people and getting an education in living in a more peaceful way.

Their customers included many seeking a more spiritual parth, and would suggest books, which theyd sell in the corner of the shop. The Whole Earth Catalog, books on environmentalism or eastern philosophy, Hindu- buddhism, the Tibetan Book of the Dead.
Michael Besanon was a follower of a guru whose followers culinary practice excluded meat, fowl, and eggs (though dairy was okay). So the menu at Follow Your Heart applied that approach to their familiar diner fare.
But they wanted to serve that part of the community that didnt eat eggs. And without mayonnaise, the cafes sandwiches were less than appealing. They still needed a lube," laughs Goldberg.
So they set about finding a mayo alternative. They went through lots of options before stumbling upon a guy whod created a product called Lecinaise which was supposedly an egg-free substance made from lecithin, which helped emulsify lipids.
They began using it in the restaurant. But a few months later they started hearing that there were actually eggs in this Lecinaise. Eventually, Goldberg says the guy got busted by the California Department of Food and Agriculture he was soaking jars of regular mayonnaise to get the labels off and then putting his own label on top!

They immediately had to look for other options. But when they approached food manufacturers, they were told an egg-free mayo alternative wasnt possible.
So Goldberg started experimenting. What could be a good plant-based solution? He tried mixing various oils and fats trying to find the best way to make them cohere. It took a lot of trials, my whole fridge [was] full of various stages, he says.
He finally came up with the answer in a dream. I bolted up, and then sat in bed, waiting two hours for light then mixed tofu scraps in a blender and combined them with oil, he says, which gave the consistency he was looking for. Eventually they replaced the tofu with isolated soy proteins and began making it themselves, as Vegenaise.
We didnt want to be a manufacturer, but that became the only option, he says.
It was so popular that in 1988, Follow Your Heart started a manufacturing division, Earth Island, which expanded from Vegenaise into other plant- based products like salad dressings, dips, and cheeses.
It was highly successful but around that time the original Follow Your Heart partnership started to dissolve. Goldberg says we all wanted to do different things. Like many bands we broke up. We lasted about as long as The Beatles.
Goldberg and Lewin bought out their other partners. Goldberg says Spencer went into early retirement, and Michael went on to become an executive at Whole Foods.
At that time Follow Your Heart and their Earth Island products were vegetarian, which meant they made some dairy products in their factories.
But when they started making white label products for Trader Joes, they were forced to wrestle with whether to go vegan. Trader Joes Caesar and Blue Cheese salad dressings had been made with a plant-based rennet. But when that became unavailable, they faced a choice.
"I wasn't comfortable with the company using a natural rennet the enzyme used to coagulate cheese from the intestine of a baby cow when the vegan one ran out, he says.
They ultimately decided to give up that part of the business, and became completely plant-based. I wasn't willing to be involved in the slaughter of animals.
He says they walked away from millions. "We saw a short-term drop in sales, but eventually it paid off.
Goldberg spent nearly 30 years building Earth Island. In that time, their products became available at grocery stores across the country and around the world. Their offerings helped spread the ubiquity of plant-based eating to a new generation that could now more easily access vegan food.
In 2020, Bob's long-time friend and business partner, Paul Lewin, unexpectedly passed away. "His passing was a big part of why I was ready to close that chapter of my life" says Goldberg "as it was something that we had done together for 50 years, and without him, it just wasnt the same". So in 2021, he sold Earth Island for an undisclosed amount to French food-product corporation Danone, famous for their yogurt, who also had a dairy-free division, including the plant-based milk alternative, Silk.
At the time, Goldberg felt like he had spent enough time at the factory. It was a good thing but it was just so big, he says. I wasnt having as much fun as the first ten years with the four partners behind the bar. I didnt know everyone on the staff anymore. I didnt know our customers, it was all big grocers. It wasnt the same personal experience.
Part of the sale required Bob to stay on at Earth Island/Danone for an extra year to help the transition, but now Bob is back where it all started at Follow Your Heart in Canoga Park.
He still has an eye to the future, seeing trends and wanting to be part of them.
"I have a sense, and a vision that Canoga Park is beginning a real renaissance of development, with the Rams building a training facility and Warner 2035. If you look around, this was an almost affordable area. Over the next twenty years it's gonna be very much in demand. Were hanging in there we want to be a part of the next phase.

They own the building across the parking lot, which still says Mr Jacks Wig Shop (which was never actually a business, just the set design from the movie Licorice Pizza).
In that space they are going to build out a bakery and a coffee roaster. We still have our wholesale bakery but we want to get into the retail side, says Goldberg.
When I visited Follow Your Heart to interview Goldberg recently, we had a lunch of plant-based Reubens. Afterwards, he gave me a copy of his 2020 book The Vegenaise Cookbook, Great Food Thats Vegan, Too and signed it To Josh my great new friend. Integrity is the answer.
For Goldberg, integrity means making sure that ones actions are congruent with ones beliefs. That you are living in your truth. And when you arent, those relationships get fractured. Integrity is what makes things cohere.
Kinda like Vegenaise.
