Everything the Men’s Health Fitness Director Eats in a Typical Day – menshealth.com

For Men's Health Fitness Director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S, creating the perfect eating schedule wasnt always easy.
Ive been strength training since I was in high school, but for a long time, I wasnt in control of my diet and didnt know what I was doing, he says. Once I learned that about five or six years ago, then I was able to make really good gains in terms of strength and the size I wanted.
Samuel keeps to a rigid eating schedule, making sure to fuel every 2 hours from the moment he wakes up. He also tracks how much he eats throughout the day. His preferred daily amounts are around 180 grams of protein, 120 to 180 grams of carbohydrates and 60 to 90 grams of fats.
"As long as Im awake, Im gonna eat. I want to be sure that I have some form of nutrition floating through my system so my muscles can constantly get a re-supply of nutrients." he says.
Samuel's day usually begins at 7:30 a.m., when he reaches for a shake. He likes to mix 1 scoops of whey protein, 1 tablespoon of almond butter, a greens supplement to get some antioxidants, and water to get his first food source of the day.
There is one catch: Its not necessarily the best tasting drink, Samuel says. But it also doesnt taste as bad as you may think. By 10:00 a.m., Samuel is ready for another shake to carry him through morning meetings.

When noon comes around, Samuel switches to natural sources of protein. A typical lunch for him includes six ounces of salmon, three ounces of brown rice, and two to three ounces of broccoli. That way, he gets a good green vegetable, a slow-burning carb to keep him going through the rest of the day, and a great go-to protein source. He repeats this meal at about 2:30 p.m. I dont need a lot of choices in my diet, he says, as long as its giving me the fuel I need.
At 5:00 p.m., it's workout mode. Before training Samuel tries to get in another meal. Because hes looking to bring a variety of natural protein sources into his food routine, he likes to have five to six ounces of a protein (either chicken, beef or pork), four ounces of potatoes, and a side of peppers and onions.
If he feels like he needs to add some fat into his dinner, then hell eat a spoonful of almond butter straight out of the jar. Hell repeat this again around 7:30 p.m. and by 10:00 p.m., he has his last fueling by eating some salmon and broccoli.

As for hydration, Samuel has a target of finishing a gallon of water a day. Although it might seem daunting (especially at work), he makes it easier by carrying around a large bottle of water everywhere, especially at meetings where he doesnt always need to speak.
I dont have to talk for every minute of every single meeting, he says. Meetings are a great chance to sit back when somebody else is talking and guzzle as much water as I possibly can.
Even though Samuels diet looks regimented, he does like to have a cheat day on Saturdays. He does have some caveats though: He respects his water intake, eating intervals ,and protein intake. But dont think he only likes to eat salmon and broccolihe does love some peanut butter cups and a slice or two of cheesecake.
So whats Samuels advice for someone looking to create their own eating structure? Find something that will work with you for the long haul and will give you the nutrients necessary for health and for building muscle. Find a way that works for you. Dont fall into the trap of going onto a restricted system. Build a system that you can maintain.

Introducing When the Sparrow Falls, the Debut Novel From Neil Sharpson – tor.com
Posted: at 9:41 am
Will Hinton, executive editor at Tor Books, has acquired North American rights to two books by debut novelist Neil Sharpson, from his agent Jennie Goloboy at the Donald Maass Literary Agency. The first book, When the Sparrow Falls, is scheduled for publication in spring 2021.
Part thriller, part literary science fiction, When the Sparrow Falls is an exploration of the coming AI revolution, transhumanism, totalitarianism, loss, and the problem of evil.
In the future, AI are everywhere. They are our employers, our employees, our friends, lovers and even our children. Over half the human race now lives online.
But in the Caspian Republic, the last true human beings have made their stand, and their repressive, one-party state is locked in perpetual cold war with the outside world.
The republic is thrown into chaos when the virulently anti-AI journalist Paulo Xirau is found dead in a bar. At his autopsy, the unthinkable is discovered: Xirau was AI.
Security Agent Nikolai South is given a seemingly mundane task; escorting Xiraus widow while she visits the Caspian Republic to identify her husbands remains. He is stunned to discover that the beautiful, reserved, Lily Xirau bears an unearthly resemblance to his wife, who has been dead for thirty years.
As Nikolai and Lily delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding Paulos death, trying desperately to avoid the attentions of the murderous Bureau of Party Security, a tentative friendship between the two begins to blossom. But when they discover Xiraus last secret South must choose between his loyalty to his country and his conscience.
Neil Sharpson said:
Ive been living in the Caspian Republic (whether as a play, screenplay or novel) for around nine years now and its almost impossible to believe that the journey is finally at an end. Its a story about one man trying to survive in a brutal regime who is given one final chance to make amends to the woman he let down. Im incredibly grateful to Will Hinton and the team at Tor for choosing this book, and to Jennie Goloboy, the best agent any writer could ask for. And most of all to my wife Aoife, who never doubted for a second, even when I did. And while its certainly not a place Id recommend moving to, I sincerely hope people enjoy their time in the Caspian Republic.
Will Hinton added:
It is a rare and joyous occasion to discover a debut novel brimming with this much talent, insight, poise and heart. The voice of Nikolai South is indelible and the world he brings us into is unforgettable, part Le Carr, part Philip K. Dick, and many layers besides. Sharpson asks questions, and gives a few answers, about what is gained and what is lost in the way we live in the 21st century that will keep me thinking for a long time. I cant wait for you to read it!
When the Sparrow Falls is scheduled for publication in spring 2021 by Tor in the US and by Rebellion in the UK.
Neil Sharpson lives in Dublin with his wife and their two children. Having written for theatre since his teens, Neil transitioned to writing novels in 2017, adapting his own play The Caspian Sea into When the Sparrow Falls.

Is Brad Pitt Vegan? What You Need to Know – LIVEKINDLY
Posted: at 6:49 pm
Brad Pitt is vocal in his support for vegan food. The award-winning 56-year-old actor is also rumored to be a longtime vegetarian. But is he really vegan?
Reports on Pitts diet vary. A recent article by Glamour said that he has been a vegan for years. Elle Australia has also reported on the actors vegan diet, referencing an article published by Eonline 2012. Other publications, including the Daily Mail, suggest that Pitt is vegetarianand has been for decades.
Vegan or not, Pitt has yet to confirm any details of his diet. However, he is extremely vocal about political, social, and environmental issues, including animal welfare. The actor has now advocated for better living conditions for egg-laying hens on at least two separate occasions.
In 2015, Pitt wrote to the chief executive of American warehouse chain Costco regarding its use of battery eggs. According to New York Daily News, Pitt said: As you know, these birds producing eggs for your shelves are crammed five or more into cages that are not large enough for even one hen to spread her wings.
Pitt and his ex-wife, fellow actor and social justice advocate Angelina Jolie, regularly supported the Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary in Namibia through their humanitarian organization, the Jolie-Pitt Foundation. They donated $2 million to the conservation sanctuary after visiting and observing the work there.
Pitt has also supported various humanitarian causes, including the ONE Campaign which combats AIDS and extreme poverty. The ONE Campaign also advocates for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Regardless of his personal diet, Pitt is vocal in his support of vegetarian, vegan, and meat-free food. Earlier this year, he complimented the vegan food served at the 77th Golden Globe Awards.
Originally, the award ceremony was due to serve a seafood dish. However, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) changed the menu last minute to send a good message about sustainability.
Im all for it. It makes sense, cause everyone can eat vegan but not everyone can eat a steak, Pitt said to the Associated Press on the red carpet.
By the way, when they do the steak, its never that good, he added. And what they like to do is fish, which I never understand because then everyone is walking around with fish breath. So, Im all for the vegan thing.
Pitt won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Quentin Tarantinos Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). DiCaprio, who was nominated for Best Actor, is also rumored to be a vegetarian and similarly praised the awards ceremony for its plant-based menu choices.
Instead of the fish, attendees ate chilled golden beet soup, wild mushroom risotto, and vegan opera cake. The 77th Golden Globes was the first major awards ceremony to go vegan in 2020. Shortly followed by the 25th annual Critics Choice Awards, the 26th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the 92nd annual Academy Awards.
In his acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes, Pitt closed by saying: If you see a chance to be kind to someone tomorrow, take it. I think we need it.
In 2018, Pitt and DiCaprio both appeared in a video PSA for the Get Out the Vote campaign. The actors encouraged fans to use their votes in the midterm elections, citing their importance in everything from healthcare to the environment.
Statehouse elections will determine the future of climate change, criminal justice reform, education funding, LGBTQ equality, and even your ability to vote, said Pitt.
Following Pitt and DiCaprios introduction, the video references several of their various initiatives. Including the Prevent Cruelty California Act, also known as Proposition 12. The propositionwhich passed with a vote of 63 percent yes to 37 percent nonow protects farm animals from extreme confinement in California.
Prop 12 will free millions of egg-laying hens, mother pigs and newborn calves used for veal from cruel cages, said the YES on Prop 12 Campaign, at the time. Proposition 12 also requires any animal products imported from other states to adhere to the same welfare requirements.
Its cruel and inhumane to lock animals in tiny cages for their whole lives, the campaign stated at the time. Such confinement causes extreme suffering and increases food safety risks. Farm animals and California consumers deserve protection from such inhumane and substandard products in the marketplace.
Pitt also held a press conference in support of Californias Prop 87, which aimed to tax oil production. The money raised by the taxapproximately $4 billionwas to be used to promote more energy-efficient cars and alternative fuels.
While Pitt hasnt confirmed what type of diet he follows, veganism is synonymous with several of the causes he is vocal in his support for. In particular, environmentalism. Adopting a vegan diet could help preserve the natural environment. It could also mitigate the impact of climate change and establish a more sustainable food system.
According to a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), eating sustainable and plant-based food is essential in reducing the carbon footprint of the human diet. It also adds that cattle farms and rice fields create over half of the worlds methane emissions.
The consumption of healthy and sustainable diets, such as those based on coarse grains, pulses, and vegetables, and nuts and seeds presents major opportunities for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, says the report.
Critics of animal agriculture also maintain that it causes unnecessary cruelty to animals. Even improved welfare standardsfor example, free-range eggsoften fall short of what consumers expect.
The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) sued the Happy Egg Co. last March for misleading advertising. Specifically for its use of the term pasture-raised, which implied more spacious housing than the birds received.
A vegan diet is also thought to be healthier than one containing meat, dairy, and other animal products. Some government organizations now advocate for plant-based diets, both for their health and acknowledged environmental benefits.
Canadas 2019 Canadian nutrition guidelines explicitly recommended a reduction of animal-based foods. Instead of animal products, the Canadian government recommends eating more fruit, vegetables, and other fresh produce.

After KFC Vegan Nugget Test, Cargill Plans to Launch New Vegan Meat Brand in China – VegNews

Agribusiness company Cargill plans to launch plant-based meat brand PlantEver in China. The move comes after the company saw a successful trial of its plant-based nuggets at three locations of fast-food chain KFC in China last month. Cargill plans to launch consumer brand PlantEver to both online and offline retailers at the end of June and also expand its vegan meat products to the foodservice sector.
The launch is just the beginning and we look forward to continuing to innovate, Jackson Chan, managing director of Cargill Protein China, said. Cargill first invested in plant-based protein in 2018, when it entered into a venture agreement with PURISNorth Americas largest producer of pea protein.
In recent months, other vegan food options have been entering the Chinese market. Last month, coffee chain Starbucks partnered with vegan brands Oatly, Beyond Meat, and Omnipork to create new plant-based options, including oat milk-based lattes, Beyond Beef-filled vegetarian pasta dishes and salads, and bowls made with vegan pork, at 4,200 locations across the country.

How I got a job in the Asian Financial Crisis. And how you can get one during Covid-19 – eFinancialCareers
Posted: at 6:47 pm
Back in 1997 I had just completed an MSc in Finance in the UK and was in London looking for a banking job. I couldnt find any work for six months, despite applying for more than 30 positions. A few banks granted me interviews but they all rejected me.
Then I ran out of money, having burned through all I had saved up before my Masters. With no chance of getting a job in London, I returned to Singapore. Soon after I got back, however, the Asian financial crisis hit! The job market suddenly changed for the worse, and my hopes of landing a role as a derivatives structurer disappeared.
So I changed tack and decided to apply for risk management vacancies instead. Before too long Standard Chartered offered me a risk control position, which wasnt my ideal job but came as a great relief after several months of searching. My boss then, Prasanna Thombre, always believed in me. He even seconded me to London and Hong Kong so that I could develop myself further. He was the reason I went on to build a successful front-office banking career and eventually became an MD.
The point of this story is that its possible, with the right approach, for junior banking professionals to adjust their career strategies and successfully navigate the tough times. Here are some lessons I learned during the Asian crisis (and throughout the ups and downs of my career) that are just as relevant to young people today during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Work for bosses who believe in you
When I got the job offer from Stan Chart back in 1997, I also received a similar offer from a much bigger European bank. I chose SCB because I believed my manager there would be great for my personal development. If you cannot get your ideal job in your desired bank, try to work for a boss who believes in you. During this current period of uncertainty, the last thing you need is a boss micromanaging you and asking you to submit your activities report on a daily basis.
Be adaptable in your choice of job
There are many loan and bond defaults in the current market, so credit structuring and credit risk management roles at banks will be in demand during the Covid-19 outbreak. But hiring in some parts of front-office investment banking has slowed down because capital market investors are now more selective when it comes to investing in IPOs and new bond issuance. If you cannot join an investment bank as a junior, perhaps consider joining a corporate in the TMT or real estate space to build up your knowledge in order to become an investment banker specialising in that sector later on.
Build your personal brand
With a personal brand, you can win trust, attract opportunities and charge a premium. When you go to the supermarket to buy a carton of milk, it is very unlikely that you will choose one that has no brand. When there is no brand, there is no trust. And trust is most important for our careers because nobody is going to hire us until they can trust us.
In psychology, there is a well-known cognitive bias called availability heuristic, a mental shortcut that relies on immediate examples that come to a persons mind when making a decision. If a fellow MD asks me to recommend a junior banker, for example, I will most likely recommend someone I know and have seen on LinkedIn recently. A strong personal brand attracts opportunities.
If you look at the big brands around us say, Apple, Audi, or Grand Hyatt they all have one thing in common: they charge a premium and yet customers still willingly pay for their products and services. When you have a personal brand, you can also command a premium. Build your brand on social media, especially on LinkedIn.
Make high quality connections
During this time when hiring is slow, banks may not advertise as much to get the candidates they want. So it is crucial to build relationships with people who can refer jobs to you. There are three types of relationships: friends, acquaintances and high-quality connections (HQC).
Friends can be high maintenance if you dont invite them to your parties, they get upset. Although acquaintances are low maintenance, they dont add much value to your career. But HQC are like-minded people who shared common values, so they are low maintenance and add a lot of value. They can initially be found on LinkedIn, but you then need to offer them something in return, so spend time engaging with them before you actually need a job.
Be ready for the most frequently asked question
Tell me about yourself will soon be taken over by What did you do during the lockdown/circuit breaker? as the most frequently asked interview question in banking. Interviewers want to see how you dealt with uncertainty and made use of the downtime. Spending time with family and taking the opportunity to slow down to reflect about life are good answers, but are unlikely to get you the job. You have a higher chance to ace the interview if you say you picked up a new skill for example, you did a video editing course or became a Zoom master.
