Responding to reality: Wilton woman adjusts to coronavirus to keep meditations program alive

WILTON Mindfulness savante Emily Tuttle swore she would never bring her meditations online, where that in-person connection can be lost.

But when the coronavirus hit, her thinking had to shift.

This year, the Wilton resident was preparing to launch a venture called Pause + Purpose: A way for people to participate in guided meditations with friends and without the intimidation of wondering, Am I doing this meditation thing right?

With shelter-in-place laws in effect, Tuttle thought she would have to pause her program, like she had to for the many weddings she was scheduled to photograph.

But her communications director, Alexa Ramirez, told her this pandemic, when people need a positive outlet more than ever, might be the perfect time to release a series of guided meditations. She and her team would have to adapt and make the best of the coronavirus.

Its been an interesting exercise in responding to reality of situation, versus lamenting what isnt, she said.

Launching Pause + Purpose during stay-at-home orders seemed to contradict her vision for something offline, in-person and community-oriented. The series of exercises in set locations would connect people with meditations in the community, and allow groups and businesses to meditate and discuss deeper topics together.

These are happening, but with a twist. There is no Pause + Purpose location right now, and instead, people are hosting sessions in-person among close friends, or over Zoom, like Ashley Scavotto.

Scavotto sets aside her Monday nights for a Zoom call and guided meditation with her four mom-friends. All cozied up in pajamas with wine or tea, they talk through the discussion and finish with the meditation.

When she initially pitched the idea to the group, Scavotto worried her friends, who all have different tastes and temperaments, would not bite. Even though none had experience with meditation, they agreed to start.

It became the thing we were looking forward to, she said. It was so wonderful that because were meeting together holds you accountable.

Otherwise, after a long day, collapsing on the couch and not thinking is more tempting, she said.

The accountability of meeting with others is a hallmark of Pause + Purpose. These interactions break the addictive cycle of having 24/7 access to devices for work and for pleasure, which ultimately leaves people feeling anonymous, isolated, drained and not like themselves, Tuttle said.

In creating something structured in real time with real people you know thats either outdoors or on a Zoom call, youre focusing your energy on something really positive that you cant look away from, she said.

Scavottos pajamas and wine meditation show how these sessions dont have to seem intimidating, Tuttle said.

And, Scavotto said, it holds more power than other forms of self-care that women seek out, such as getting their nails done.

You uncover stuff and it has you thinking and processing, she said. I think its special. It brings communities together.

Tuttle is opening an online shop this month for people to buy memberships. Like Audible for audiobooks, monthly or yearly memberships grant members access to guides created by different professionals in the mental health and mindfulness world.

Tuttle said these memberships are helpful for people looking to host at home or with their businesses, and are great for social workers, fitness instructors, and anyone who does mental health work with clients or in the community. But anyone from a basketball coach to a religious group could benefit, she said.

When the Pause + Purpose team heard some summer camps were canceled, they knew they had to expand their reach to children, too.

So Susan Verde, a New York Times best-selling childrens author, is holding a childrens mindfulness session. It can supplement what parents or educators do with kids this summer, and it could be an antidote to all the online enrichment out there, Tuttle said.

Parents can feel like theyre doing something enriching thats not just staring at a Zoom call, she said.

Other guides are written by Aimee Elsner, of Stamford Power Yoga, and Westport-based psychotherapist Merritt Juliano. Elsner will guide men and women in a meditation that hones in on values, so practitioners can determine what they want in life through meditation and discussion. Julianos aims to connect practitioners with nature.

Verde and Elsners mindfulness guides will be released in July, and Julianos comes out in August.

The other resolution Tuttle softened on is launching an app.

Meditation apps such as Headspace and Calm help people who need meditations in the moment, but there is little-to-no personal engagement and if users have questions about if they are doing it right, they do not have anyone to turn to in real time, she said.

Tuttle said she is trying to make the anti-meditation app. A developer is working with her to make an online shop that is automated and seamless so people are not spammed with extra information. And maybe an app could be a nice companion to this in the future.

I want to make something that supports this and makes it seamless for people to use so that it doesnt feel like the tech is getting in the way and disturbing you, she said.

Gareth Fox: Meditation Just as important as the gym – Gaelic Life

Posted: at 1:42 am

The definition of stress is a state of mental or emotional tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances.

In the hustle and bustle of 21st century living, demanding circumstances are a dime a dozen. Bills, jobs, neighbours, family, friends they all provide their demands. And each one adds its own little portion of stress, each one provides its own dilemma and unpredictable outcome.

Consciously, we might be able to assign to each stresser an order of merit, from most stressful to least but inside, the mind doesnt care. For every different exterior situation, the same interior reaction. The primitive nervous system (fight or flight mode) is turned on the body immobilises enormous amounts of energy and resources to be able to deal with the perceived threat in the environment.

We begin to use up the bodys vital resources so that we can survive the condition in the outer world. Our pupils dilate, our salivary juices shut down this is why we get a dry mouth our heart rate increases, our breathing rate increases, blood is shut down from going to our organs and is sent directly to our muscles. Its time to run or fight.

The stresses in our environment cause the same reaction in our bodies as in the body of a zebra being attacked by a lion in fact, for us it is the exact same thing, our body thinks its life or death.

If the zebra outruns the lion, the zebra needs time to rest and repair before the stress response is switched off and the body returns back to balance.

Blood is sent back to the vital organs, the immune system returns to function normally and the zebra can begin to eat again.

In the sporting world, this same exact stress response is set off by a number of familiar things both on and off the field; the fear of losing, of missing a shot, of giving a bad pass, of our man scoring, of making a mistake, of dropping the ball, of being taken off. And so, these constant stresses dont really allow for the stress response system to be switched off.

If you think the wrong kind of thoughts before a game, it goes into your body, changing your chemical composition, which then affects how you perform. Your thoughts create physiological changes, your muscles tighten, your breathing is shallower, your hands and feet become cold as the blood leaves the extremities.

Tighter muscles increase the chances of injury, foot speed is decreased, reaction time slows down and your reach is shortened. With faster breathing you tire faster. With cold extremities you drop the ball, and your ability to have clean contact when kicking is decreased. Quite literally, your thoughts (how you perceive your environment) can radically decrease your performance.

Logically, the answer to this would be to make a change in the way you think. Turn stress emotions like anger, frustration, aggression, competition, fear and hatred into elevated, heartfelt emotions like gratitude, appreciation, kindness, love, joy.

These emotions tell your body that it is not in a dangerous environment, and so the stress response remains switched off and the body can continue to repair and regrow.

However, it is not always easy to feel gratitude when your manager is criticising you. But there is something else you can do.

There are many different techniques and definitions for meditation. But no matter your technique or definition of choice, it does the same thing.

It creates a state of homeostasis in the body. Homeostasis is the bodys base line status it is self-repair.

The cells repair and regrow and everything in your body works at optimal level.

The fundamental idea behind all meditation is to create inner silence. Quite simply what this means is to have no thoughts.

And the easiest way to have no thoughts is to concentrate on one thing your breathing.

Watch LeBron James during timeouts, his eyes are closed as he follows his breath. He is removing all negative chemicals from his body.

If your mind is solely focused on inhale/exhale, then it isnt thinking about missing a pass, losing a game, playing poorly.

As I said earlier, stress is caused by perceived danger in your environment, which is created by your thoughts.

If you arent having any thoughts, then naturally there will be no stress response and your body can focus solely on repair and regrowth, allowing you to perform at your optimum.

It may sound easy, but in practice it is extremely difficult. 99% of people who try meditation give up within the first month. It has to be learnt, the meditation muscle has to be given time to grow. What I recommend is starting with a beginners guided meditation of only five minutes.

Take your time and learn how to focus on your breath. Breathe in and breathe out.

A guided mediation will tell you what to do when naturally thoughts of the outside world start to enter into your mind.

Practice every day, and over time you will get better. Slow down the daily thoughts which are quite literally causing poor performance. Meditation is vital for playing well and maintaining a healthy body.

New York Film Festival to Feature Documentary on Covid Patients Recovering with Meditation – India West

Posted: at 1:42 am

JAIPUR A documentary film on 28 Covid patients recovering through a meditation technique shall soon be featured in the July New York Lift-Off Film Festival. "Its schedule will be announced soon," Naman Goyal, who made the documentary, told IANS.

The 78-minute documentary film, "The Magical Guru and His Secret Mantra (Revealed)," will have its global premiere in the festival, he added. Goyal had shared this meditation method since the second week of February with Wuhan authorities in China, Daegu, South Korea; Milan, Italy; and now New York City (via Facebook) with a view to help patients recover quickly from Covid-19.

"I was studying about the healing powers and immunity building strength of this meditation, and hence went out of the way to contact coronavirus patients and suggested them the techniques, he said.

The film follows two more video interviews of coronavirus patients he released on his social media profile. The families of these patients have benefited by this meditation technique, he said, adding that what really stands out is the fact that the average number of days where coronavirus patients recover through this meditation is seven days, as opposed to the three weeks on medicine.

Goyal has also been in correspondence with the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. The authorities have cleared the initial review of this meditation and asked Goyal to submit a second round of documentation, as a proposal for a systematic study involving Covid-19 patients.

"Earlier in May, two patients had reported that a meditation technique was helpful in a quicker recovery from COVID-19. Thereafter, many more patients were given this meditation technique and eventually the number of patients recovered and discharged from the hospital with the help of this meditation rose to 28.

"I simply spoke to these patients on the phone and sent them the meditation video on WhatsApp," Goyal said.

"The first few cases were the toughest to reach out to. But once the patients started speaking of positive effects of the therapy, it became relatively easy," Goyal said.

The meditation technique is freely available online and was given to the world by Guru Ram Lal Siyag (1926-2017). Guru Siyag used to explain the reason for the increase in immunity in his public speeches, Goyal explained.

In one of his speeches, the filmmaker said, the guru said: "As one starts the meditation, the sattva Guna (tendency) rises in the body and suppresses the other two gunas (tendencies) the Rajas and the Tamas. At one point, only one guna (tendency) can remain active in the body. As the Sattva becomes an active and dominant guna (tendency), all sorts of Tamas are driven out.

"The tamas is responsible for creating an environment in the body where any infection (coronavirus) can thrive. Hence the sattva overcomes any infection in the body."

The patients who got well are (as submitted to the Science and Technology Department of the Government) mentioned in the documentary film.

Try these Yoga asanas, meditation practices, and breathing exercises to manage stress and anxiety – Times Now

New Delhi: Life is a mixed bag of experiences that keeps us on our toes. Almost as soon as we begin to start interacting with the outside world, there are situations of stress. Children, too, face stress just like adults. The only difference is the nature of situations that we find stressful. Stress is necessary for our growth; this is a positive stress which makes our life feel rich. However, negative stress has no positive outcome except that it takes a toll on our mental and physical health.

Stress cannot be avoided, but how we deal with it can definitely be learned. Ancient practices of yoga, meditation and mindfulness equip us with the tools to manage stress in a constructive manner. Invest in a regular practice of yogic techniques like asanas, pranayama, and meditation practice etc. This will ensure that you have taken care of your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Yogic practices align the mind, body and spirit helping you to better understand your own true nature and master your emotions. Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation, Chandra Namaskar or Moon Salutation can also be included in your daily practice. Even for someone who is always on the go, all you need is 15 minutes to give yourself the gift of health, and peace.

Start with Sukshma Vyayam or subtle exercises. These consist of a gentle rotation of neck, arms, wrists, hips, ankles to slowly warm up the joints. Walk around briskly, and stretch and mobilize your muscles. This will prepare your body for practice, and keep you safe from practice-related injuries. Here are a few simple asanas that you can hold for up to a minute each.

Super Power Meditation is also a highly recommended practice as this influences the rate at which your body can heal itself. Meditation techniques can improve your mood, calm your mind and help to relax you. To practice this, seat yourself on a peak of the mountain in Sukhasana or any other comfortable pose that gives you the shape of a pyramid.

The intention is to sit in the shape of a triangle atop a mountain. In this position, you need to visualize a reverse triangular shield in your chest and then meditate. During the meditative process, with every inhale, this shield allows you to welcome all the positive energies of the world into you. And, as you exhale you release unwanted toxins, miseries, and negativity from within you.

Find a place which you do not frequent, preferably a natural environment for this technique. Sit in any comfortable posture such as Sukhasana. Look ahead for 5 seconds, behind you for another five seconds and on Right and Left sides for five seconds each. Now close your eyes and recollect as many details that you observed as possible.

Benefits: This meditative technique has numerous benefits. Helps to instil a sense of calmness It also builds your observation skills The process of this meditation helps improve Memory power It slowly builds within the practitioner a greater sense of gratitude.

Method:

Technique:

Technique:

Gently close your right nostril with your thumb, inhale into your left nostril and close it, letting the breath out through the right nostril. Then inhale through your right, closing it to exhale only through your left. This makes one cycle.

Try to include inversions as often as you can in your practice. These are very beneficial for the health of your nervous system. Poses such as Adho Mukha Svanasana, Halasana, Chakrasana, Sirshasana allow fresh blood to flow into your body. In asanas like Halasana, when the neck and spine are stretched, it releases any stress stored within them. This helps to reduce anxiety and bring calmness to your being. Follow this up with a breathing technique for another 3 minutes, meditation for 2-3 minutes too, and you can wrap it up by chanting a few mantras too. Apply these techniques with commitment in order to take positive steps towards your well-being.

Director X on how the ‘Advance Peace’ initiative could help end gun violence in Toronto – Post City

Posted: at 1:42 am

Your own research site Operation Prefrontal Cortex provides information on meditation and the impact it can have on the brain. Had you been meditating before your shooting and what came afterwards?

Yeah, meditation was actually something I was already doing. But I didnt really know what it was doing for me. It wasnt until later, when I started reading different things that talked about violence and aggression, the brain, abuse, neglect, stress and then as you bring them together. We were the first people to actually bring this information together [with Operation Prefrontal Cortex].

It was actually around the time a rapper a lot of rappers were being killed the rapper Smoke Dawg was killed on Queen Street [in 2018]. That was the one after which I decided to go to the mayor with our information [Operation Prefrontal Cortex]. I sat down and decided to present something to him. And then when TEDxToronto asked me to speak, I really got in there and started to bring it all together.

No, but the thing was so clear. You know, from the middle school in San Francisco to the violent prison in Mexico, you see how these places are changed with the [Advance Peace meditation] program. You know, the environments were so extreme, the before and afters are so extreme. There was no real need to go and find something to double-check it.

I want Advance Peace [a charitable organization based in Richmond, Calif.] to come here. Advance Peace has a serious track record in the States. What they did in California, changing a city that had eight times the national average of gun crime down to a 40 per cent drop in one year, we need that here. What I care about is the violence in our city and it calming the f**k down. We need to look at places that have gotten results and do them. If thats what it takes, then thats what we should do. Because not only have they gotten results, say like in Sacramento, theyve saved that city $29.2 million because of the gun crimes they have been able to prevent.

Beyond even what we are talking about with Advance Peace, we need to be getting into these communities and helping kids that are already in trouble. You have to have a conversation, a very real conversation about whats going on. Why is the world shaping young people who feel murder is the way to settle the dispute? Whats going on? You have to really get serious about this because now theres no peeing section in a swimming pool, and you can only hold that back for so long, right? And now, the violence has spilled out into places where we all are.

It makes a lot of sense for what we got going on. Not every situation needs a cop. And when it comes to gun crime, we need to deal with prevention. Cops show up afterward and catch people. If its someone you love that has just been murdered, yeah, justice is nice, and thats important. But you would have much rather that the shooting never happened. And thats the program we are talking about that gets at prevention and stopping them as opposed to catching them.

The deputy mayor, Ive spoken to him about it. Hes seen the results, and he will present it to the city council on the 29th [of June]. And then well see where it all goes. But this is an approach that makes sense. It should be provincial. This should be how we tackle what we got going on in our city, in our province and across the board. This is a big deal: to begin to look at the young people and see their potential.

The Best Workout Headphones For Every Kind Of Activity – Forbes

Posted: at 1:42 am

To say this year has created unusual workout situations is an understatement. But whether you're working in your living room, on the trails or maybe even back in the gym, one thing remains consistent: You need a pair of good headphones. No matter your activity of choice, the best workout headphones will stay in place while youre running around wont get ruined from a little sweat.

Wireless earbuds are popular for many types of workouts, from cycling to lifting weights, but there are a number of different options to consider within that category, as well as a few situations when you might prefer something else entirely.

Maybe you've got a special playlist or a coaching app on your phone, maybe you need to drown out the noise around you. Or maybe you're like me and like to use long runs as a chance to catch up on podcasts. Below, I've pulled together the right pair for every workout and preference, from earbuds for running to over-ear headphones for meditation.

JBL Live 300TWS Headphones

JBL Live 300TWS are fantastic running companions. These diminutive buds don't have any unsightly tails dangling from your ears or vestigial wire holding them together. They just fit in your ear, stabilized so that they don't pop out.The gesture controls can be fiddly at times, but once you get the hang of them, they're perfect for running, where you only have to poke at them for a second or two to change the volume, skip to the next track, answer a call (they work with your smart assistant), or, my favorite, activate Ambient Aware so that you can hear what's around you.

You'll get 20 hours of playback with the included charging case, they have IPX5 waterproofing for sweat and water so you don't have to worry about getting caught in the rain and their sound is crisp and clear. Plus, they come in some eye-catching colors other than black and white. If you're going to be spending hours running with a pair of earbuds, this is the set to get.

Apple AirPods Pro

It seems a little obvious, but there's good reason AirPods Pro nab this spot. If you have an Apple device, be it an iPhone or a Watch, AirPods Pro just work, no fussing with Bluetooth, no gritting your teeth as you try to reconnect them during the middle of your run.

AirPods Pro initiates pairing with your iPhone automatically when they're first activated and are then paired automatically with all your other devices. So if you leave the iPhone at home and just workout with your Apple Watch, you don't have to worry about making a fresh connection, just pop in your earbuds and start listening.

It also doesn't hurt that they have fantastic ANC, excellent sound, good battery life, and convenient features like auto-pause, a listening mode, and automatic reading of Messages. Plus, Apple continues to enhance them, with new spatial awareness coming later this year. The fact that the company continues to improve the AirPods Pro makes them a solid investment.

JBL Endurance Peak Headphones

I like the JBL Endurance Peak for working out at the gym (instead of the far off vistas their name conjures) for one simple reason: the Powerhook. These little loops fit around your ear and keep the earbuds stable no matter what you're doing. They're smart too, switching off automatically when you take them out and they snap back to their resting place.

The touch controls aren't quite as robust here as they are on the JBL Live, but I'm OK with that. I find I want a more basic earbud at the gym standing there fiddling with my earbuds to get them to do what I want just draws stares.

The Endurance Peak lasts for 28 hours (with charging case) and have IPX7 waterproofing. And at $79, you're not going to be worried about losing them. Not that you will, because it would take a barbell to the head to dislodge these suckers. They're the perfect gym companion.

Under Armour True Wireless Flash by JBL

JBL UA True Wireless Flash are waterproof, cord-free earbuds with soft Sport Flex Fit cushioning to keep them securely in your ears. Waterproof with an IPX7 rating, they're not only going to survive your sweatiest workout, but also when you get caught in a surprise downpour.

Each pod features a 5.8mm driver, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 5-hour battery. The included aluminum case can recharge the set up to 25 hours. UA Flash also features "Bionic Hearing" for TalkThru and Ambient Aware features. TalkThru lets you lower playback volume and enhance speech when you touch the left earbud. AmbientAware mode is activated with a double-tap and pipes in a bit of the background noise around you so stay aware of your surroundings.

The physical buttons on the earbuds make it easy to control playback when your hands are slick and activate your voice assistant. Especially for running, I've not found a more comfortable or more reliable pair of earbuds.

Sony WF-SP800N Headphones

These true-wireless Sony earbuds bring the digital noise cancellation and adaptive sound control of their other headphones to a smaller package. These don't have the onboard chip of the WH-1000XM3, but they still block out a good amount of sound. More importantly, they automatically adapt as your situation adapts. Rather than having to constantly take your earbuds in and out of your ears, the WF-SP800N will adjust the level of noise cancellation and allow you to hear what's going on around you, which is important for when you're working out in the city.

They're a little larger than other earbuds, but that also makes it easier to tap to activate the Quick Attention feature, which lets you instantly lower the volume and let ambient sound in without taking out your earbuds. The WF-SP800N will last 18 hours with the included charging case (or up to 26 hours if you don't use ANC) and have IP55 water resistance (so no swimming).

Back Bay Duet 50 Pro Headphones

The Back Bay Duet 50 Pro earbuds might only cost $50, but this pairs feature set and sound quality challenge every pair of headphones on this list. These diminutive earbuds have 8 hours of battery life per charge. Pop them in the included 2600 mAh case between sessions and you'll get up to 130 hours of life total less if you use the case to charge your phone (a handy extra that not many other manufacturers offer). They fit snugly in your ear and include six sizes of tips so that you can get a perfect fit.

Soundwise, they're impressively crisp for their size. I used them to stream the audio as I caught up on an oldAlienmovie and was astounded at how clearly I could hear the little atmospheric sound effects. Back Bay prides themselves on tuning their products to "American Hi-Fi sound" which basically means punchy bass and sharp high range tones with a neutral mid. The effort they've put in really shows.

They might not have all the tricks of more expensive earbuds, but for $49.99, they don't have to. These buds accomplish exactly what you need them to: provide excellent sound and a long battery life in a package you don't have to worry about losing.

Wicked Audio Arq Headphones

Wicked Audio's Arq wireless earbuds are small and comfortable I could wear them for hours and not even know they're there. The trade-off is that they're not waterproof. But if that's not a concern, these are worthy of your consideration. They turn on as as soon as they're taken out of the charging case, helpfully identifying themselves as left or right channel, a nice touch forgotten by other earbuds.

The one thing I didn't expect from Wicked Audio's Arq wireless earbuds was nuanced bass. But listening to "Cornelius Street" off of Tay-Tay'sLover, there it is. It's not a punch, not a "blat," but a pleasing "thump" as the bass beat kicks in and sets the tempo for Swift's latest bop. The case itself doubles as a powerbank, a helpful feature that more manufacturers should mimic.

Sony WH-1000XM3 Headphones

Anyone who says meditation isn't a challenge hasn't tried to do it while the entire family is home for the summer, trying to entertain themselves as they're stuck in the house due to a pandemic. Meditation actually has enormous health and wellness benefits. (If you haven't had a chance to check out an app like Headspace, I highly recommend doing so.) But the problem remains, even if you're only doing it for 10 minutes a day, if those 10 minutes are filled with background noise, it's exceedingly hard to find your zen.

This task becomes considerably easier when you pop on a pair of the best active noise cancellation (ANC) headphones on the market. The Sony WH-1000XM3 are legendary for their ability to completely eliminate external noise. Sony has designed a special processor (the QN1) whose sole purpose is noise cancellation. Not only is it great at blocking out engine noise (important for travelers) but also conversation and background noise. The WH-1000XM3 are even smart enough to detect how your personal sonic profile changes when you're wearing glasses and adjusts accordingly. But all of the technical details fade into the background as soon as you put them on. You'll be so focused on how insanely quiet they make everything. The noise cancellation the Sony WH-1000XM3 delivers is without peer. It's like stepping off a busy street into a library. Speaking of, these headphones are smart enough to detect when you're walking or when you're commuting, and adjust the level of cancellation automatically. You can even use the app to set whether they focus on voices (so that you don't miss a PA announcement).

They're the most expensive headphones on this list at $349, but they're the best ANC headphones I've ever tried. Period. If you can't meditate with these babies on, then you can't meditate.
