The Vegan Cowboys Are Coming to Take Down Big Dairy – LIVEKINDLY
Posted: at 4:47 am
The founders of The Vegetarian Butcher now have their eyes set on dismantling Big Dairy. Theyve formed a new companycalled Those Vegan Cowboysto develop plant-based dairy products.
Jaap Korteweg, a ninth-generation meat farmer, and Niko Koffeman founded The Vegetarian Butcher in the Netherlands in 2007.
Korteweg started the brand to satisfy his own craving for meatless meat. More than 4,000 outlets in 17 countries now sell The Vegetarian Butchers products.
In 2018, the duo sold the company to Unilever. The multinational consumer goods company and The Vegetarian Butcher first started working together in 2016. The two companies launched two productsVegetarian Meatballs in Tomato Sauce and Vegetarian Meatballs in Satay Sauceunder Unilevers food brand, Unox brand.
The acquisition enabled Unilever to expand its plant-based products portfolio. It also furthered The Vegetarian Butchers goal of becoming the largest butcher in the world.
We want to take the next stepconquer the world, Korteweg said following the Unilever acquisition. It is our mission to make plant-based meat the standard.
After developing plant-based meat, Korteweg and Koffeman are working on a new business venture. Theyre now creating vegetable-based dairyincluding milk, butter, and cheese.
The development of a stainless steel cow that goes into grass and milk comes out, without the hassle of animals, is a long-cherished wish of mine, Korteweg told Business Insider. He added: Now that Unilever has taken over our dream to make The Vegetarian Butcher the largest butcher in the world, we can focus on the next breakthrough next to the work for the Butcher.
Korteweg and Koffeman predict it will take seven years to get Those Vegan Cowboys products to market on a large scale.
The upscaling and traditional processing of high-quality dairy copies takes time. But if it succeeds, this project will make a very positive contribution to animal welfare, fair world food distribution, nature, the climate, and biodiversity, Korteweg told Flanders Bio.
The dairy industry is facing an uncertain future. Across the U.S., more than 3,200 dairy farms closed down in 2019. Nearly 3,000 farms closed in 2018.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, milk consumption has declined by 40 percent since 1975. In 2018, milk sales plummeted by $1.1 billion, according to The Dairy Farmers of America.
Major milk producers also closed their doors. Dean FoodsAmericas largest milk producerfiled for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2019. The company claimed its declining milk sales were the cause of its mounting debts.
While conventional dairy sales plummet, plant-based milk products have been on the rise. According to research firm, MarketsandMarketsthe dairy alternatives market is projected to grow from $17.3 billion in 2018 to nearly $30 billion by 2023.
The study revealed one reason consumers are turning to plant-based milk products is that they believe a vegan diet is healthier.

Salmon Causing Second Wave Of COVID-19 – Vegan News
Posted: at 4:47 am
A second wave of coronavirus has hit Chinas capital city Beijing and imported salmon is being blamed prompting a national ban on the fish.
Salmon has beentakenoff theshelvesin major supermarkets likeWalmart Inc.and deleted from grocery delivery platforms across China, while top experts are warning people not to consume the omega-3 rich fish. Provinces and cities from Yunnan to Shanghai are testing the seafood at local wet markets for the virus.
The backlash came after the chairman of a major fruit and vegetable market called Xinfadi, the site of over 100 newly-detected infections in Beijing, said that the virus was traced to the chopping board used by a seller of imported salmon.
While it is unclear if the virus can be actually be transmitted through frozen food thats later thawed, the fervor has put a $700 million market for imported salmon at risk, dealing a blow to major exporters like Denmark, Norway, and Australia.
The swift shunning of salmon reflects Chinas growing fears over the abrupt resurgence of cases in its capital city the cultural and political center of the country where 20 million people reside.
Over 20 housing compounds have been placed under lockdown and some schools closed while local officials race to track down people whove visited or had contact with the Xinfadi market.
Chinese authorities have contacted Norway seeking information about infection risk connected to the production of fresh salmon and the Scandinavian country aims to reply as quickly as possible to limit the impact on the industry, Norwegian Fisheries Minister Odd Emil Ingebrigtsen said in astatementon the governments website Tuesday.
We have yet to find out whether human beings transmitted the virus to salmon, or salmon contracted the virus first, said Zeng Guang, a senior expert with the National Health Commission, in aninterviewwith state media on Sunday.
He warned Beijing residents not to eat raw salmon or purchase imported seafood for the time being.
Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist of Chinas Center for Diseases Prevention and Controlsaidon Sunday that the virus can survive on the surface of frozen food forup tothree months and that the agency highly suspects contaminated goods as the source of the latest outbreak.
The salmon boycott is another setback for exporters of the seafood to China after the coronavirus pandemic caused sales in the first four months of the year to plunge over 30%.
Prior to the crisis, the four biggest exporters according to China customs data Chile, Norway, Australia, and Denmarks Faroe Islands had seen demand steadily grow to $686 million last year due to rising middle-class incomes and a shift to healthier diets.
The situation drove stocks of pork producers up on Monday, with Jiangxi Zhengbang Technology Co. jumping as much as 8.6% and Wens Foodstuffs Group Co. climbing as much as 4.7%.
The gains were likely fueled by expectations that demand for the meat will rise as consumers shun seafood, said Ken Chen, an analyst with KGI Securities Co. in Shanghai.
Local authorities across China are heightening their scrutiny of wet markets and the seafood sold there.
In provinces likeYunnan, Hubei, and Shandong, fresh seafood and equipment like chopping boards and knives are beingtestedfor the virus. Wet market workers are also being screened.
In astudypublished in April, researchers with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations concluded that the coronavirus is not known to infect aquatic food animals or contaminate their products.
The risk should be negligible with proper food handling and sanitation, although their surfaces might potentially become contaminated when handled by people who carry the virus, scientists including Melba G. Bondad-Reantaso wrote.

Thug Kitchen, A Cookbook And Vegan Recipe Website, Is Changing Its Name After Years Of Criticism – Delish
Posted: at 4:47 am
Bernard Weil/Thug KitchenGetty Images
The creators behind the popular vegan site and cookbook collection Thug Kitchen have announced they will be changing their brand name and re-evaluating past content following criticism of "the racist connotations" of the name.
Matt Holloway and Michelle Davis issued a statement on their website called "We're Changing" in which they explained why they chose the name in 2012 as a way to "signal our brands grit in the otherwise polished and elitist food scene," as previously reported by The Takeout.
Criticism of the brand's name is not new, as they also mention in their post, but its writing style, which is explicative-ridden, purposely abrasive, and often references rap lyrics and films by Black artists, has also been under fire in the past. When it was revealed in 2014 that two white people were behind the brand, they received backlash, with some calling it "digital blackface." Chef Bryant Terry wrote a powerful piece on the subject at the time for CNN.
"The contrast drawn between the consciously progressive dishes shown and the imagined vulgar, ignorant thug only works if the thug is the kind of grimy person of color depicted in the news and in popular media as hustling drugs on a dystopian block, under the colorful glow of various burger stands, bulletproof take-out spots or bodega signs," he wrote. "'Those kind of people,' the visual gag suggests, 'intimidating you into... preparing arugula or tempeh? How absurd, how shocking, how hilarious!'"
The recent statement explains why the pair previously dug their heels in despite that criticism:
They went on to say they'll be changing the name of their company, plan to "discontinue the use of Thug Kitchen as the title of all our previous cookbooks, and closely re-evaluate the content of each book," but noted it will take some time to get everything updated. As of right now, the name Thug Kitchen is not heavily featured on their homepage, though it is still part of the URL and their LLC is at the bottom. The top of the website as of this writing reads "verbally abusing you into a healthier diet."

5 ways to create me time moments in your #wfh week – Her.ie
Posted: at 4:44 am
Brought to you by Momenti Pizza from Dr. Oetker
When lockdown first started, the one positive thing about it was that we expected to get LOADS of time for ourselves. We were set on plenty of self-pampering, meditation, and all those positive things we think about when taking time off for ourselves.
That hasn't been the case though because, well, we haven't really been taking time off.
A lot of us are still working every day and having your work life and home life all in the same place every day can take its toll.
Lockdown restrictions are easing, which is great, but we're not back in work yet. We've decided that it's time to take charge of our mental wellbeing and ensure our #wfh time is not taking away from our me-time. So here are five very simple steps to follow to make sure you get that all-important you-time.
If jogging or running is your thing, that's perfect too.It doesn't matter what time of the day you do this as long as you do. Get yourself out for some fresh air, time to think, and time to observe the world around you by yourself - it will do wonders for your mindset.
It'll also give you time to look at something other than a screen and to give your eyes a bit of a stretch. You may be surprised at how much stress is coming from eye strain alone. Try looking away from your screen and out the window at something far away, you'll see what we mean.
Days all blurring into one? Heres how to get the Friday night feels at home
This is really the main benefit of working from home, isn't it? And while we generally prefer to get up, get dressed, and get in the productive zone before starting work, it's also nice to treat yourself to a more relaxing and comfortable start now and again.
If you've got a laptop and you haven't got a morning Zoom meeting, grab yourself a tea and stay in those pyjamas for another hour or two. You might actually find it makes you more productive.
When we say a proper lunch here, we don't mean something that you've spent ages working on, we mean a nice lunch that you take the time to eat by yourself, away from your computer.Your lunch break is so important for resetting your mind and giving yourself a break from those work stresses.
Honestly, we prefer throwing on something super easy so that the preparation doesn't take time away from your break. Dr. Oetker has just launched their new Momenti pizza range and we're a little obsessed with it. The pizzas are frozen single-serve pizzas, coming in Tomato, Mozzarella & Pesto and Salami Calabrese flavour, and they're both under 450 calories. So they're perfect for lunch and for enjoying while you take that time to yourself.
Terrible at saving money? Revolut is the perfect way to build good spending habits
Not everyone can work with music in the background so we understand if this isn't your thing, but we recommend trying out a few relaxing classical compositions or maybe some movie soundtracks (depending on the movie, of course. Psycho probably isn't the best choice for this).
Anything with lyrics and singing is probably going to distract you but we love throwing on a bit of John Williams or maybe some Debussy in the background. The type of music is up to you but it's so lovely taking a minute every now and then to stop working, close your eyes, and just let yourself enjoy the music.
Yes, a bath. We know, it's a bit of a self-care clich but that's only because they're SO relaxing. You honestly won't realise how much you needed baths in your life until you take a proper one. Get that candle lit, make sure you've got lots of bubbles, play some relaxing music if you want, and let yourself soak in luxury. Divine.
Brought to you by Momenti Pizza from Dr. Oetker
Dr. Oetker's new Momenti Pizza is a small, great-tasting frozen pizza. The two flavours - Tomato, Mozzarella & Pesto and Salami Calabrase - contain up to 450 calories. They are just the right size for a quick lunch or tasty dinner for one. Available in Tesco, Dunnes Stores, Supervalu and BWG. For information, visit theDr. Oetker website.

‘I am a violinist for peace and love’ – The Republic
Posted: at 4:44 am
Even those whove initially bristled with street violinist Colin Matthews have experienced a heart-melting transformation after hearing his music.
That includes a police officer who tried to shoo him away from an area of Fishermans Wharf in 1994 in San Francisco even though Matthews had a permit to be there and perform. Matthews insisted on playing Ava Maria for the officer initially bent on arresting him. In fact, as it it turned out, the musician played the song for the cop day after day after day for some time while the public servant listened, emotional and transfixed.
Every time I started to play, something would happen, Matthews said. His face would change. Then he would drive away.
The 57-year-old Matthews, an Indianapolis resident, will bring that same sense of outreach and melodic bridge building as he plans a four-hour street concert beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday in front of Buccetos Pizza and Pasta Restaurant at The Commons, 300 Washington St. in downtown Columbus.

I am a violinist for peace and love, he said, speaking while relaxing outside his Indianapolis home. I have seen and learned that how you approach people in life can make a huge difference.
Clearly, he loves people. Part of his conversation, tinged with his native Trinidadian accent, was interrupted occasionally by his exuberant greetings toward neighbors and passersby.
If he sounds joyful, its because he is indeed. He overcame serious burns after an oil refinery fire years ago. His heart stopped for roughly seven minutes after a surgery in 1985 in the wake of one of his many motorcycle accidents. He remembers a glorious, spiritual, inner experience in which he was made of light and felt no fear.
All I could feel was unconditional, stupendous love, he said of the memory. And this was not because of mushrooms or weed.
He laughed heartily. He plays tunes from Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, the Eagles, Elvis, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, Frank Sinatra and others.
I especially love the love songs, he said. I am in love with love.
If he sounds like a salve for troubled times such as these, so be it. How can he not be grateful just to be alive and sharing his heart through music? Thats why he refused to be angry when a woman on the Monon Trail in Broad Ripple reported him to Indianapolis police last week before he even had played a note outdoors.
A mention about the incident drew attention on Facebook, where a nearby business owner invited him to come play outside his establishment nearby. Many others posted a defense of him and support for his music.
I saw people showing their love as an awesome thing, Matthews said.
So he said he will continue to do the same as an everyday citizen called to be an instrument of joy in a sometimes saddened world.
I am simply a man who has experienced an awful lot, he said.
Lately, when he has played at nursing homes, he has begun sharing parts of those experiences, including his after-death recollection.
You should never be fearful of death, he said.
Maybe the only thing he fears is missing opportunities to reach others with his music, especially since the novel coronavirus limited gatherings where he might normally appear.
Buccetos owner Paul Heilbrunn not only has a business relationship with the musician. The two have become personal friends.
Colin is great, and people really enjoy sitting and watching and listening to him on the patio, Heilbrunn said. Hes very, very good.
Matthews played indoors at Buccetos when the restaurant celebrated its grand opening. He also has played at local events ranging from the Ethnic Expo international festival to the Taste of Columbus restaurant event.
He holds fast to one element of his after-death experience in which he was told that only two elements of life reign supreme: loving and being loved.
That, he said, really changed my life.
About Colin Matthews
Born: Trinidad.
Lives: Indianapolis.
Age: 57.
Next street concert: 4 p.m. Saturday in front of Buccetos Pizza and Pasta Restuarant at The Commons in downtown Columbus.
Has played: Classical to pop on the violin.
Also has played; Ethnic Expo international festival, A Taste of Columbus, and other events.
