Official: Mall walkers inspiration for health and fitness show

Posted: at 9:47 am

Participants of all ages, fitness and health levels, and exhibitors were at Arrowhead Mall on Saturday to be a part of the Be Active Health Show.

“The main inspirations behind this event are the walkers who walk around the mall every morning,” said Hope Margarit, mall marketing director.

“All kinds of people from teens, to mothers who walk with strollers to senior adults, come in at 7 a.m. and walk before work. We do a lot of healthy things at the mall, and this is just another aspect of it,” Margarit said.

The event consisted of 11 businesses from Muskogee and surrounding cities. Free fitness classes were provided by Champion Fitness, and speakers offered information about healthy living. The 11 businesses represented at the health show were Muskogee Regional Medical Center, Tahlequah City Hospital, Muskogee Swim and Fitness, Humana, Pregnancy Resource Center, Professional Home Hospice, Gaddy Drug, Cardiology Clinic of Muskogee, America Red Cross and Dillard’s hosted an American Heart Association Wear Red Fashion display.

“This is a regional mall, so we’re taking a regional approach and inviting businesses from around here,” Margarit said.

“We don’t have very many things like this around here, so it’s great that people can get out there and see what’s available to them without having to go to all the way to Tulsa,” said Susan Winters, a partaker who attended the health show.

Both Champion Fitness and the Muskogee Swim and Fitness Center were represented and were dedicated to helping area residents learn about setting and reaching fitness goals.

Champion Fitness offered free fitness classes and routine demonstrations for cardio kickboxing and step aerobics routines.

“We have fitness classes for any fitness level, and our classes are great for cardiology health, weight loss, toning, and they are great for relieving stress,” said Group Fitness Director Shannon George.

We’re here to show people how we can help them. We have a variety of different levels and instructors who are certified to help any person of any fitness level. We also have swimming lessons, water aerobics for people who may need exercise with less pressure on their joints, but still want a great cardio workout, said a representative of Muskogee Swim and Fitness.

Each business had something unique to offer, but they all had something in common. They were all there to give their support and information on all they have to offer to help serve the community.

“For us, it’s a chance to meet patients and potential patients. We get to educate the community about being healthy. We’re a regional provider, so we love to get out and meet the community that we serve. Civic involvement is a large part of what we do,” said Christina Deidesheimer, MRMC’s director of Marketing and Communications.

Becky Elliott, the infection prevention specialist at MRMC said many of the people they are seeing, they have seen at similar free events.

“They don’t have insurance and they wouldn’t have been able to get these screenings if wasn’t for this health show,” Elliott said.

Retirement savings plan: more transparency, more choice?

Posted: at 9:47 am

Retirement savings plan – the 401(k) – would give clearer guidance on fees and offer retirees more options, according to new proposed rules. One proposal would allow part of a retirement savings plan to convert to an annuity.

The Obama administration is taking steps to make the fees charged in a 401(k) retirement savings plan more transparent and broaden the options retirees have for drawing on their nest egg.

The U.S. Treasury Department and Department of Labor each set forth new rules or proposed regulations that apply to 401(k) plans on Thursday.

Treasury's proposed regulations would make it easier for people with 401(k) plans to receive part of their funds as an annuity, a plan that pays out regularly over a lifetime.

Such plans can be useful options because people are living longer and some may end up outliving theirsavings or, fearful of such an outcome, hold back on spending more than necessary.

"Having the ability to choose from expanded options will help retirees and their families achieve both greater value and security," Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said in a statement.

Upon retirement, people with savings in a 401(k) plan typically are given the choice to take a lump sum or receive funds as an annuity. The proposed regulations seek to make it simpler for companies to offer employees combinations of an annuity and a single-sum cash payment, and make it easier for retirees to buy so-called longevity annuities. Those start paying out when beneficiaries hit an advance age, say after age 80.

Treasury plans to finalize the regulations by the end of the year.

In addition, Treasury issued rules that apply to employers who offer 401(k) and defined benefit pension plans, which also pay out a set amount over a lifetime.

The rules aim to spell out the steps employers can take to let workers shift funds from their 401(k) accounts to their defined benefit plans, and clarify that employers can offer workers the option to use 401(k) savings to buy deferred annuities and still satisfy guidelines aimed at protecting a beneficiary's spouse.

Both rules went into effect on Thursday.

Labor's rule requires certain firms that run 401(k) and pension plans to disclose investment fees and other costs to employers.

Retirement plan companies will have to disclose direct and indirect compensation that they receive in connection to the services they provide.

Those firms must comply with the rule no later than Aug. 30.

"When businesses that sponsor retirement plans, and the workers who participate in those plans, get better information on associated fees and expenses, they'll be able to shop around and make informed decisions that will lead to cost savings and a larger nest egg at retirement," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis.

Making the arts Personal

Posted: at 9:46 am

Walk into Bryant Whelan’s office at the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural and Arts Center, and you know she is an avid collector of art, especially folk arts.

There are face jugs, primitive works, a small Choctaw basket she acquired during a trip to Jackson, a pine needle basket with colorful yarn.

“And this is a handmade book,” she said, picking up the volume and opening its clay cover, revealing pale green pages inside. “The paper is handmade, too.”

In fact, handmade is what especially draws Whelan to a work.

“I love handmade paper and jewelry. I make jewelry myself, and I paint, and I’ve always been supportive of local artists,” she said.

A mixed assemblage angel hangs on the wall near her desk. Like many works in Whelan’s office, the angel has a story.

“I saw one of her works and said, ‘This is spiritually speaking to me.’ I wanted to meet Provie Musso, who did it, but somebody said she had just left. After that, I would go around asking people, ‘Do you know Provie Musso?’ I finally did meet her, and we became fast friends. Now, I’m planning for her to do a workshop here,” she said. “She’ll bring in wood, found objects and metal, and people will get to pound and paint and come back with a wonderful piece of their own.”

Whelan’s plan to bring the Daphne, Ala., artist to do a workshop at the Mary C. is a tangible example of what the center’s new executive director has in store for the community, the Coast and area visitors: personalizing art -- all kinds of art -- making it accessible and multidimensional to all.

“I just started the third of January, so I’m still getting my feet wet,” she said. “I’m getting more acquainted with what’s working and what needs attention.”

One of the first goals is building membership, Whelan said.

“We have a great base membership and fantastic volunteers, but we need more,” she said. Whelan sees opportunities for a variety of needs to be met through resources at the center.

“This morning, a woman and her son came in. She has been in physical rehab, and she was interested in working with clay; she thought it would be good therapy for her hands. She’s in her 70s, and she wants to take clay courses,” she said.

Whelan, a Mobile native, has lived in several places, including Atlanta, Nashville and Edinburgh, Scotland, and has more than 20 years of experience in marketing and the arts. She came to the Mary C. already aware of what Ocean Springs has to offer.

A new online interview with John Spencer Ellis and Erik Rokeach focuses on giving good media interviews in the fitness business. It also discusses exposure, building a brand and taking advantage of media opportunities.

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA (PRWEB) February 05, 2012

Media exposure for a fitness business can enhance reputation, increase business and provide free advertising for personal trainers and fitness business owners. According to fitness business expert John Spencer Ellis, the key is gaining exposure first and then using that opportunity to focus on the positive in the fitness industry.

In a new online interview, John Spencer Ellis, the founder of John Spencer Ellis Enterprises, a fitness and personal development solutions company, talks with fitness media interview expert Erik Rokeach about how to make the most of every media and interview opportunity for those in the fitness and personal training business.

In the free online video, Ellis and Rokeach talk about ways to get more media opportunities that can be used to grow a fitness business and brand as well as things to avoid in interviews. The duo also encourages personal trainers, coaches and other fitness pros to be willing to take chances and to not be so afraid of failure.

“Gaining media exposure for your coaching, fitness, personal training or wellness business is a great opportunity, but you must do it right!” said Ellis. “We get a lot of requests about successful media outreach in the fitness industry, so Erik and I wanted to put together this how-to guide to getting media interviews and then successfully growing your business with them.”

In particular, Rokeach and Ellis discuss the necessity of having a unique hook or angle for the media interview, the importance of cadence and tone for TV or Internet interviews, authenticity and energy, making a few key points, strategic pauses, modeling, pacing and timing, and much more.

“Everybody’s got something to share or to teach,” Rokeach added, while also encouraging a focus on connection and modeling the person who’s interviewing to build overall rapport.

Online Sales Training Program – Positive and Negative Motivation – Video

Posted: at 9:44 am

18-01-2012 18:22 http://www.zoomsalestraining.com Interactive Online Sales Training Programs - Online Sales Training Courses There are two kinds of imagery. Restrictive imagery is also called fear imagery. Restrictive imagery is based on fear of being punished, being rejected, fear of being made of fool of or fear of someone withholding something from you. Restrictive imagery is used as a form of motivation. This negative motivation is something that comes from without and, more importantly, from within. When a salesperson thinks in terms of what they don't want to happen and the awful things that will happen if they fail, they find it difficult to adopt the new behaviors and habits needed for success. A primary indicator that a salesperson is operating from negative, restrictive imagery is the frequency of creative avoidance such as procrastination and excuse making combined with unwillingness to take the actions needed for sales success. 713-338-2512 10333 Harwin Drive Suite 570 Houston, Texas 77036 youtu.be
