If buying organic produce isn't in your budget, know that you're not alone.

Organic fruits and vegetables are often touted as being better for our bodies. That's all well and good until purchasing the pricey produce feels totally alienating for those of us who don't have the budget for it.
That's why we talked to experts to find out what the organic label really means, how risky it is to buy non-organic alternatives to save money and whether there are any conventional fruits and veggies you should skip for your health.
Though organic farming has roots dating back to the 1940s in the U.S., it wasn't until the '60s and '70s that environmental awareness and a consumer push for organic practices expanded.
Even so, the Organic Foods Production Act, which set national standards for organic farming and labeling practices, wasn't actually passed until 1990, per the Harvard Library.
Today, the term "Certified Organic" is defined by the USDA as foods that "are grown and processed according to federal guidelines addressing, among many factors, soil quality, animal raising practices, pest and weed control, and use of additives."
There's a lot more to it than that, but here are some highlights:
"Studies have found that organic produce has lower levels of potentially harmful pesticide residues than conventional produce, so for those looking to reduce their exposure to pesticides, organic produce is a better alternative," says Maya Feller, RDN, a Brooklyn-based dietitian and author of The Southern Comfort Food Diabetes Cookbook.
What exactly makes them potentially harmful?
"Pesticides also hurt us indirectly when our soil and water are contaminated," says Mark Hyman, MD, functional medicine pioneer and author of the book Food Fix.
"Researchers link chemical pesticides found in food and water, especially atrazine and DDE, with increases in body mass index, or BMI, in children and insulin resistance in rodents."
A March 2012 study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, for example, found that moderate prenatal exposure to the organochlorine DDE was associated with an increase in weight status in boys aged 6.5 (the association didn't hold for girls).
Organic foods arent necessarily pesticide-free: They can still contain pesticide residue since certain chemicals are actually permitted in organic farming, per the Mayo Clinic. Plus, pesticides used on nearby conventional crops can also find their way onto organic fruits and vegetables.
While there appears to be clear benefits to reducing our exposure to pesticides, there isn't a ton of consistent information showing that organic produce is nutritionally better than conventional produce.
For example, one June 2017 field study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that onions grown under organic conditions had higher concentrations of antioxidants compared to onions grown under non-organic conditions.
But a September 2014 review in the British Journal of Nutrition reported that some organically grown foods were found to have higher concentrations of carbohydrates and lower concentrations of proteins, fiber and the toxic metal cadmium compared to conventionally grown foods.
A September 2009 review in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported no significant differences in the nutritional quality of organic and conventional food products, including produce and livestock. According to the study, differences in the nutrient makeup of organic and conventional produce are "unlikely to be of public health relevance."
Dr. Hyman begs to differ. "Organic produce has a higher nutritional content than conventionally grown [produce since] the practices used to grow organic food encourage healthier soils and ecosystems while avoiding the pollution of our land and waterways. This sets up future generations for successful harvests and a cleaner food system." Happy body, happy planet.
What about organic meat and dairy? Organically raised beef, poultry and lamb were found to have a 47 percent higher concentration of omega-3 fatty acids, on average, compared to their conventional counterparts, per a March 2016 meta-analysis published in The British Journal of Nutrition.
Quick refresher: Omega-3s are the anti-inflammatory polyunsaturated fatty acids that support heart health, immunity and genetic function.
Organic dairy has also been shown to be higher in omega-3s. So there's that. Organic dairy is produced without growth hormones. That may be a plus, since ingredients like rBGH (recombinant bovine growth) have been linked to an increase in the hormone insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in the blood.
Some studies have linked elevated levels of IGF-1 with increased risk of breast, prostate and colorectal cancers, though the connection remains unconfirmed, according to the American Cancer Society.
"If our only choice is non-organic produce or no produce at all, we should choose the former," says Dr. Hyman. After all, meal plans devoid of fruits and vegetables are bound to be missing critical nutrients that our bodies need in order to thrive.
Feller says she also wants clients to focus first and foremost on eating more foods in their whole and minimally processed form. "When finances are of concern, I always encourage continuing to eat fresh produce regardless of the conventional label," she tells LIVESTRONG.com.
If you do have the financial freedom to be a bit choosy, follow the Environmental Working Group's Clean Fifteen and Dirty Dozen lists, which highlight the fruits and vegetables that are the least and most contaminated with pesticide residue.
"We can use these lists to limit toxic exposures and consume nutrient-rich food, organic or not," says Dr. Hyman. "So if you love eating berries, which are safer to buy organic, spend the money on organic berries one week and then try some other conventional fruits from the Clean Fifteen list the next week."
Added benefit: Incorporating more variety into your diet is a great way to expand your nutrient intake.
If can't swing buying organic, don't take that as a cue to do away with fresh fruits and veggies. In general, experts recommend eating conventional produce instead of skipping it altogether if your wallet can't accommodate an organic price tag.
One potential exception, in Dr. Hymans opinion, are strawberries.
Strawberries are one of the worst offenders of conventional produce and are often labeled number one on the Dirty Dozen list, he says. Strawberry samples show an average of 7.8 different kinds of chemicals in extreme cases up to 23 chemicals compared to 2.2 in other types [of fruits and vegetables], which have been linked to cancer, reproductive and developmental damage, hormone disruption and neurological problems.
Try opting for conventional blackberries if you cant buy organic strawberries. These could be a healthier and more affordable alternative.
"Organic is a health benefit, not a health necessity," says Dr. Hyman. "Being a conscious consumer can help you make the best choices for your health, your wallet and the planet and that can be done without buying 100 percent organic." Phew.

Alleged Pesticide Spraying of organic farm in Fallon highlights the differences between organic and conventional agriculture – The Sierra Nevada Ally

Early in the morning of August 31st, 2020, as Salisha Odum owner/operator of Salishas Delicious Organic Produce, readied her daughter for online school, they both responded immediately to the sound of a plane flying close, at low altitude, to their house and fields.
The plane flew back and forth several times over the course of an hour, and by the third pass, Salisha said the unknown chemicals settled on the land.
Thats when I smelled the chemicals. And then I kind of got sick and dizzy and you know, wasnt feeling good at that time either we were out taking videos because what had happened in the past we wanted to get some footage if we could, Odum said.
Salishas photo records show a plane she traced back to Frey Spray LLC.
The Ally contacted Frey Spray owner Jerry Frey. He denied the allegation.
We werent flying over her house and we werent spraying over her house. Her field was a long ways away and no one else complained next door, Frey said in a phone interview.

Jerry Frey and Frey Spray are busy, with upwards of seven farm contracts a day, covering 600 acres on average, flying every day during the growing season.
They also spray 11,000 acres for the Churchill County Mosquito, Vector, and Noxious Weed Abatement District. The yearly contract for combatting mosquitos nears $100,000 annually.
Jerry is on the frontline of combatting vector-borne illness like malaria, dengue fever, and West Nile virus. If Zika virus were to arrive in Nevada, Jerry would probably be among the first to know.
Records obtained through the Nevada Department of Agriculture show that the Frey plane was spraying two pesticides on August 31: Fastac CS Insecticide and Yuma 4E Insecticide. Fastac CS is a class 3A insecticide, meaning in part that it is a pyrethroid.
As well as the effects suffered by Salisha, in more recent studies (by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry), this class of insecticides are shown to be possibly carcinogenic at higher levels of exposure. And the Yuma 4E in the class 1B, comes with warnings on its label:
Harmful If Absorbed Through Skin. Causes Moderate Eye Irritation Do not apply this product in a way that will contact workers or other persons, either directly or through drift. Only protected handlers may be in the area during application.
Frey Spray works as far afield as Battle Mountain, Minden/Gardnerville, Yerrington, Winnemucca, and Lovelock.
I asked Jerry Frey about sprays he was using on that day Salishas Delicious Organic Produce farm was allegedly sprayed: Yeahthat would take a long time to do (to describe) We use a horrible variety of that we go with whatever the EPA approves and calls for.
How many agents does Frey use?
Probably close to 100. We try to keep it confined to just a few and thats about as few as we can get; we could enlarge it and go to 200.
We asked if Jerry had any concerns about working so closely with all of these chemicals.
Theyve eliminated a lot of the caustic chemicals we just have to spray more often now, because they just left very weak products on the market. So everyone just has to spray more often. There never used to be this much spraying . . . So its just a matter of who controls the lawmaking, how far they can think ahead.
Jerry addresses permethrins (pesticides naturally derived from chrysanthemums) and pyrethroids (the chemically derived pesticides used in industrial agriculture).
Before Christ they discovered that certain extract other chrysanthemum plants killed worms real good, killed a lot of bugs real good. So of course were in the day and age we are now we reverse engineer it and we manufacture it by the gallon, thousands of gallons and a little bit does a lot.
And if youre sitting on your kitchen table in the gallon jug of this falls over and starts glugging out It could run onto a baby, a brand new born baby and not harm it at all. The salt shaker full of salt is more toxic than what is in that jug when we lean on those products a lot. Theyre called pyrethroids. And permethrins. The pyrethroids are the reverse-engineered. Weve been doing it for years Its just been a wonderful product. And they took a lot of nasty products off the marketthe press made them sound more nasty than they were but we dont care. So [the press has] a job to do. Alarms to ring anyway.
Salishas Delicious Organic Produce and the Challenges faced by Organic Farmers
Churchill County is a leading agricultural region in the state and home to 672 farms and ranches. Nearly $200 million in agricultural products are sold a year. Sixty-three percent of the farms are smaller than 49 acres.
Salisha is/was one of two certified organic farmers in the county at the time of press and is literally surrounded by industrial operations that hulk in size compared to the scale of her organic farm.
According to the USDA, 4 percent of all food sales in the nation are organic.
To achieve United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) organic certification, farmers must pass regular tests through the course of three years, showing their soil has no herbicide or pesticide residues. Farmers seeking organic certification have to keep their farms, records and practices open to examining inspectors throughout the entire course of the three-year process.
Organic crop and production practices are based on: soil building through composting; use of organic non-genetically modified seeds; crop rotation to keep soil biomes healthy and diverse (as well as to help mitigate pests); pest management relying on the PAMS (prevention, avoidance, monitoring, and suppression) strategy, which is achieved through natural means only, except for a small list of USDA-approved synthetic pesticides.
According to the USDA, organic production is achieved through a combination of practices which promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity [while] avoiding use of synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, and genetic engineering.
All of this with the aim to sustain and regenerate the very systems that raise nutritious wholesome food.
Conventional farming, also known as industrial agriculture, became more popular and widely practiced after WWII, largely in efforts to drive food yields and production up.
Synthetic chemical insecticides and pesticides are permitted and regulated through the Environmental Protection Agencys guidelines. Genetically modified organisms, irradiation, and the use of sewage sludge are permissible in the practices of conventional farming.
Monocropping is also part of the industrial system, allowing for huge yields and productions of produce for human consumption, as well as fodder crops for animal feed. Many of the animals to which the fodder is fed are confined in large-scale farming operations (also known as CAFOs: confined animal farming operations), where they are living in unnaturally dense containment.
The animals are fed grain diets heavily supplemented by hormones for quick fattening and medications to stave off infections, sicknesses and diseases wrought by living in such unnatural proximity.
To treat industrial-scale fields, heavy and specialized machinery like giant tractor systems, airplanes, and helicopters are used to enable large-scale operations.
These practices were introduced with the goal to feed the world and eradicate hunger.
On June 16, 2016, Salisha said Frey Spray wrongly treated her property with glyphosate, an active ingredient in the herbicide Roundup. Salisha sued Frey; and the parties settled out of court.
Weve had problems with [Salisha] before and had to go to court. And we never were proven to be wrong there, said Jerry Frey about the glyphosate incident.
Salisha recalls the preliminary court hearing.
Judge Stockard advised the Freys that they were not going to win in court, because we had forensic evidence . . . [positive tests for glyphosate] from the Nevada Department of Agriculture, and so they decided that they would go ahead and settle out of court and thats what we did.
It was only in late 2019 that Salisha was recertified USDA organic, after enduring that three-year period of glyphosate residues diminishing enough in her soils to regain the organic stamp.
Spraying these pesticides on a certified organic farm is a catastrophic event. Testing is underway at Salishas farm, but if these chemicals are present, she would lose her certification.
If Salisha were a conventional farmer, she would have to wait 30-60 days after insecticidal spraying for human consumption of these crops.
As an organic farmer, these same crops have to rest for at least 120 days for the current round of insecticide residue to diminish enough into the soil. To be organically saleable, the USDA must test the soil.
All of this disruption happened with only a couple weeks remaining at Salishas primary farmers market in Reno.
Salishas other main outlet, the Fallon Food Hub, now has a serious shortage of organic vegetables.
Planning for Next Season
As Salisha thinks ahead to her next growing season, she awaits the latest round of test results to decide her next course of action regarding the alleged spray-over of her farms, which could mean possible litigation.
Now are the days of big harvest. Many crops are coming in, and lots of sales will be made. Meanwhile, Salishas turned the water off. She has chalked-up the rest of 2020 as a loss.
A lot of work I put in is pretty much wasted Its my preference not to buy food at the store if I dont have to, because if I can go out there and know whats in the product and its got my work in there too, you know, its even better I agree with my customers that my food tastes the best. I truly believe that thats what got me into this in the first place, is wanting to have good food.
All Im really worried about is being an organic farmer and feeding people good food. I mean, thats what I do in life, you know.
Salishas Delicious Organic Produce in Churchill County is a microcosm of organic farming in the United States. Clouds of prohibited chemical agents surround organic farms. Salisha says one farmers gold is another farmers poison.
I mean, if you look at the list of the toxicity on this stuff, its utterly crazy that anybody would even think about putting it on food this is a problem that I know that the United States is facing and its probably not just my farm whos has to go through things like this. And so Im hoping that maybe we can just bring awareness to whats actually going on, and maybe also bring awareness to [the sprayers] as to the effects that it has on people
Once youve been actually exposed to these chemicals, then you can honestly say, I know this is not good for me.
This stuff is poison. And I dont understand why today we call things that are poison, not poison. Back when I was a kid, we put a skull and crossbones on poison. You dont see that anymore. And to me, thats a scary thing.

The Forward Movement of Organic Growth – The Good Men Project

When Antony John first started growing organic produce on a quarter acre of land for restaurants near his farm in Stratford, Ontario, he met with the perplexed reactions of loan officers at the bank. They were willing to lend us money, but you had to prove yourself to them every year with a cash flow statement and lean on them to lend enough so we could expand, he recalls. One said to me, We dont know organic market gardens. We know pig farms.
Now with 20 acres (eight hectares), several greenhouses and more than 100 different varieties of vegetables, what we produce equals the cash generated by a 500-acre cash-crop operation, he says. Weve expanded every year for 27 years and have seen three cycles of bankruptcies in the local pork industry.
Like Johns business, organic and agroecological farming has gained both prominence and profitability over the past decades. By now, the global market for organic products is worth over USD 1 billion, according to a 2018 study by the Research Institute of Organic Farming. In terms of area, 71.5 millions hectares of land are devoted to organic agriculture around the world, a 2.9 percent increase from 2017, cultivated by 2.8 million farmers, a 55 percent increase from 2009.
The study comprised statistics from 186 countries. But millions of small-holder farmers, especially in underdeveloped countries, also practice agroecological methods, in large part either because they cant afford chemical fertilizers and pesticides or because they are still adhering to the traditional practices of their ancestors.
The concepts of organic agriculture were developed about a century ago by pioneers like Albert Howard and Rudolf Steiner, who believed that the use of animal manures, cover crops, crop rotation and biologically based pest controls resulted in a better farming system, says Gabor Figeczky, head of global policy at IFOAM Organics International, the global umbrella organization for organic agriculture movements. Around the middle of the century, advocates like J.I. Rodale and his son Robert, began publishing a number of texts on organic farming, elevating the concept.
But it was in the 1960s with the publication of Rachel Carsons Silent Spring that saw demand for organic food rise considerably, raising crucial questions about the environmental effects of the unbridled use of pesticides. Thats when the idea that farming could be harmful to the environment and human health really came up, says Figeczky.
At the same time, scientific focus on understanding organic and agroecological practices has evolved from a fields-and-farms level to encompass landscape ecology and, more lately, entire agricultural systems.
Last year, the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) released a report looking at how organic and agroecological agriculture can transform the entire agri-food system, improving the global farmers bottom line while boosting the health of both consumers and the planet. At its heart, the report recognizes that food systems are at a crossroads, and that a profound transformation is needed to reduce the role farming plays in emitting carbon and destroying biodiversity and, at the same time, produce enough to feed a growing population.
Graziano da Silva, the former director general of the FAO says that while agroecological methods have played a marginal role in the past, it is growing fast, and many countries have already assigned research resources and some funding for agroecological approaches, especially in organic farming.
We have now a kind of alternative to promote another model of rural development and for agricultural development.
At first glance, the challenge facing agroecological agriculture is how to produce enough to meet global food demands that, under a business-as-usual scenario, are estimated to rise by 50 percent by 2050. Studies referenced in the 2019 report indicate higher crop yields in some contexts, and in others, a decrease.
One 2018 study, for example, modeled the potential for agroecological farming systems in Europe, including the elimination of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers; a shift to healthier diets; and the development of hedges, trees, ponds and other habitats for increased biodiversity. It estimated a 35 percent decline in production but a 45 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
Yet, as many researchers have pointed out, a funding bias means far more resources are being allocated to monoculture farming than to its environmentally friendly counterpart. Nowadays almost all the money for research in agriculture goes to Green Revolution practices, says da Silva. In the future, if we are able to channel part of those resources for a more agroecological approach, certainly we will get better technologies and find ways to improve productivity. And these can provide many more products coming from that approach.
It is a matter, he says, of how to better use the money that is now going only for promoting [agriculture that is] intensive in chemicals and machinery.
For Figeczky and others, it is also a question how to change agri-food systems to more strongly emphasize sustainable production and consumption, support balanced diets, equitably distribute of food and productive farmland, and reduce food waste.
If food waste was a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases on the planet, he says. With about 30 percent of our food going to waste, we should look at what it means in terms of exacerbating climate change, loss of a biodiversity and ecosystem services, resource efficiency and so on. Food insecurity cant only be seen as a production issue. It is at least as much a problem of distribution. People go to bed hungry because they dont have access to food.
Indeed, according to the FAO report, the world is dealing with an untenable food paradox: 870 million people suffer hunger, 2 billion suffer from obesity and another 2 billion lack essential nutrients in their diet. There is a growing awareness, the report states, that hunger and malnutrition may not be only a matter of food production, but mainly of different entitlements, leading to unequal access to food, to natural resources, inputs, marketing and services.
The problem is not how to produce more, da Silva agrees, but how to produce more without damaging nature, without losing natural resources, like soil, water, and forests that we cannot replace in time to face the challenge of 2050.
At IFOAM Organics International, a new initiative called Organic 3.0 aims to make sustainable farming systems and markets based on organic principles more widespread, by expanding participation options and positioning organic as a modern, innovative farming system that integrates local and regional contexts.
Resource regeneration; responsible production; and the ethical development of human values, practices and habits are concepts that can guide the building of what Figeczky sees as a new organic culture that can drive societal development. This is how we want to lead the whole organic movement, he says, in a way that we, as organic, become more socially sensitive by adding more social requirements to the most widely used organic standards and regulations.
For Antony John, meanwhile, who has counted 137 bird species on his land, including the threatened barn swallow and bobolink, agroecology and biodiversity are inextricably bound.
The methods that we use to produce on our farm have an ancillary benefit that goes beyond just putting food on a plate for people, he says. There is an enhancement of the ecosystem that goes on, and its a win-win situation that, as the biodiversity of our farm increases, it supports a wider range of organisms and birds. Its like a spider web. Adding more and more strands into that web makes it more resilient and flexible. More secure.
