Paerson, Vonn separated by hunger for success
Posted: March 14, 2012 at 5:40 pm
SCHLADMING, Austria (AP)With all Lindsey Vonn and Anja Paerson have in common, one major difference has been separating the two skiing greats this seasontheir appetite for winning.
Whereas overall champion Vonn is more hungry for victories and records than ever, Paerson has lost her motivation and will retire after Thursdays super-G at the World Cup finals.
For me it has not been really about winning races anymore this season, said the 30-year-old Paerson, who has been struggling with a persistent left knee injury. Thats where I felt I wasnt the same in ski racing anymore.
Vonn and Paerson are two of only five female skiers to have won World Cup races in all five Alpine disciplines. Petra Kronberger of Austria, Pernilla Wiberg of Sweden and Janica Kostelic of Croatia also managed the feat.
Paerson led Vonn 42-41 in World Cup wins going into the current season, but the Swede failed to win a race and has been heavily outscored by her American opponent, who added 12 titlesa personal bestto her total.
Vonns most recent win came in Wednesdays downhill, a race Paerson watched from the stands.
It was not fun to watch the race. I think I could have won it, Paerson said.
After winning gold in slalom at the 2006 Turin Olympicsone of her 19 medals at major championshipsPaerson decided to continue her career for four more years.
I took a big step in 2006, she said. To be a four-discipline skier is very hard so I decided to stop after Vancouver. It was my big goal to come to the Olympics one more time.
In 2010, Paerson won her sixth Olympic medalbronze in the combined event and backed down on her decision. She felt it was too early to quit and decided to stay on the circuit for one more season.

Why success is all about relationships
Posted: at 5:40 pm
(MoneyWatch) COMMENTARY Now more than ever, there never seems to be enough time to get things done. Why that is, I don't know. But I do know that, in an era of social networking, telecommuting and virtual meetings, when it comes to work, the one thing that gets sacrificed is relationships.
Big mistake.
If you want to get somewhere in your career, in management, in business, the worst thing you can do is just focus on work, work, work. Success is all about relationships. Relationships with your management, boss, peers, employees, customers -- everyone in your immediate work ecosystem, if you know what I mean.
And I'm not just talking about working relationships; I'm talking about your personal relationships with these people, where you break through the workplace persona people use for whatever reason and actually connect with the human being beneath.
Just to be clear, this isn't about wasting people's time. That's a bad idea because, as I said before, that's the one precious commodity that nobody has enough of these days. But if you do it right -- if you're genuine, open and sensitive to people's boundaries -- you'll do fine.
Here are seven reasons why your success depends far more on those all-important interpersonal work relationships than you realize:
Any CEO, VC, or entrepreneur will tell you that their network is their biggest asset. And when it comes to networking, doing it old school is a major distinguishing factor versus social networking. When you have a personal relationship with someone, that creates a level of trust that sets you apart from the virtual hordes.
Strong relationships make it easier to get information and information is power. It could be about a major project, a key customer, budget cuts or an upcoming promotion. When it comes to important stuff, you have to give to get, and you're not going to get anything valuable from somebody who doesn't trust you.
Relationships get people through tough times. Long ago I learned that, all things being equal, a personal relationship will help you keep your job, win the business, whatever it is you need, it can make the difference when times are hard. It also means you have someone to lean on. Try leaning on someone you hardly know. Bad idea.
The higher up the corporate ladder you climb, the higher the stakes, the bigger the deals, the more important everything becomes. And that means people have to look you in the eye and feel confident that they know who they're looking at, that you'll do what you say you're going to do, get the job done, whatever. And vice versa.

Education Transformation: Collaborize Classroom
Posted: at 5:35 pm
SANTA ROSA, Calif., March 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Democrasoft, Inc. (OTC: Pinksheets: DEMO) today announced two major milestones for Collaborize Classroom, the company's flagship online collaborative education platform.
The first milestone, the launching of over 20,000 individual Collaborize Classrooms by teachers around the world, has been accompanied by an equally significant advance: the delivery of nearly 1.5 million individual topic-based lessons to students via the Collaborize Classroom platform. Many of those lessons were shared via the Collaborize Classroom Topic Library, a free, growing global repository of over 2,500 lesson topics that enables teachers to share the best and most effective individual lessons they create with other teachers around the world. This sharing capability includes a peer-rating system to help teachers quickly identify the most interesting and appropriate lessons for their own students.
With just a few clicks, topics on almost any subject from the Collaborize Classroom Topic Library (http://library.collaborizeclassroom.com) can be copied to any Collaborize Classroom anywhere in the world for all grade levels.
Since its official launch in January of 2011, Collaborize Classroom has been steadily gaining recognition and high marks from teachers, students, the education industry and technologists.
"Collaborize Classroom has quickly become part of a worldwide effort to adapt education to the 21st century needs of students everywhere," says Richard Lang, CEO of Democrasoft. "Reaching these milestones validates for us and for the education and technology communities that Collaborize Classroom is recognized by teachers themselves as a way to increase their effectiveness and make their jobs easier."
Collaborize Classroom (http://collaborizeclassroom.com), available free of charge to all grade levels, gives teachers the ability to extend in-class conversations to private and secure online sites accessible by any Internet browser or from any iPhone, iPad or iTouch. Teachers post topic-based lessons on any subject in their own Collaborize Classrooms and invite their students to participate in online group discussions, usually after school.
The Collaborize Classroom platform has sustained a 25% average monthly growth rate since its official launch in January 2011, and its momentum has been noticed by District Administration Magazine, which named Collaborize Classroom one of its Readers' Choice Top 100 Products for 2011. Edudemic.com readers also called it one of the Top 100 Best Web 2.0 Classroom Tools.
"These awards are particularly satisfying because they originate from good teachers who feel helped rather than threatened by 21st century technology in their classrooms," said Lang.
Good Magazine's "Future of Learning" series also featured Collaborize in a video called "Sharing the Wisdom of We" that highlights Collaborize Classroom's contribution to education. The video is part of a documentary series entitled "Future Learning".

House OKs some education reform, limits scope of online classes
Posted: at 5:35 pm
DES MOINES The Iowa House rejected online education as proposed by Gov. Terry Branstad in the final vote of a marathon debate on education reform Tuesday night.
Instead, House members adopted a plan that limits the number of school children that can enroll in fully-online courses to 900 students statewide and restricts outward open enrollment from any single district to 1 percent of its total enrollment. It also requires the Iowa Department of Education to develop a statewide online education program.
This does show some good-faith compromise, said Rep. Jeremy Taylor, R-Sioux City, an English teacher who has been skeptical of the 100 percent online leaning proposal since debate on the education reform package began in earnest earlier this year.
House members rejected an amendment from Democrats that required a student receive a maximum of 50 percent of their coursework online.
But lawmakers delayed a vote on the overall reform package until this morning when they are supposed to run a technical amendment to the bill.
Lawmakers took up the bill just after 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon and didnt finish debate on the measure until 11:49 p.m. House rules dont allow for votes to take place between midnight and 8 a.m. The package, if approved today, would go to the Senate which has its own reform bill but could choose to pick up the House version.
In addition to online learning, House members rejected Branstads proposal that required prospective teachers to have a 3.0 GPA for admission to a teacher preparation program and required teachers to maintain that GPA for graduation by a 77-20 majority.
Rep. Guy Vander Linden, R- Oskaloosa, said the requirement was an unnecessary intrusion by the Legislature into the decisions that are best left up to the people who run the programs.
Cecil Dolecheck, R-Mount Ayr, said raising the requirements to get into teaching programs could help raise the public perception of teachers and help teachers garner public support for wage increases.
The House plan did keep a controversial third-grade retention option as part of an overall early childhood reading program and it kept a series of tests as proposed by the governor, despite the attempts by Democrats to make changes from on both plans.

"Advanced Academics is honored to be named an Innovator of the Year by The Journal Record, said Jeffrey A. Elliott, Advanced Academics president.
