Yoga stretches the benefits of exercise
Posted: March 16, 2012 at 6:13 pm
Everybody's doing it. Celebrities, seniors, young adults, teens and young children. Even cats and dogs. People of every race and religious group are catching on to the benefits of yoga.
The 5,000-year-old practice has gone from an obscure Eastern-oriented discipline to somehow, almost overnight, the hottest exercise trend.
In 2007, Americans spent $5.7 billion on yoga classes and products, including equipment, clothing, vacations and media, according to the Yoga in America study released by Yoga Journal. The 2008 study indicates that 15.8 million Americans practice yoga. Fitness studios and gyms have seen class sizes swell to capacity as students pour through the doors with rolled-up mats tucked under their arms.
Yoga is a mind-body form of exercise and the benefits are extensive. Not only does it affect the physical aspect of the body, it addresses the mind and spirit as well. Students focus on what they are feeling in their mind and body as they stretch, breathe and place their bodies in various poses.
"It puts you in a good place," said Kay Silk, of Sylvania, Ohio. "The relaxation leaves you with a good feeling to go into the rest of your day."
Pop stars such as Madonna and Sting swear by yoga as the key to a great physique. The various stretches and poses require extensive muscle use and promote increased strength, which leads to toning, all while burning calories and increasing flexibility.
The slow pace and low impact of yoga appeal to people looking
Silk first started the practice when she was in her 30s, but dropped out because the class was too "slow." Now at 75, it's exactly what she wants.
"At some point, you have to slow down," said Silk, a museum volunteer who has been practicing yoga consistently for about six years. "This is slow. You can hold the positions. You move at your own pace. You only do what you're comfortable doing."
While many yoga poses look difficult and intimidating, simple movements such as smiling and reaching for the sky during that morning stretch are forms of yoga, said Mike Zerner, a yoga instructor in Toledo, Ohio.

ANN ARBOR: Life experience laid groundwork for Entrepreneur of the Year (with video)

John Rotche, president of the Belfor Franchise Group headquartered in Ann Arbor, has been named 2012 Entrepreneur of the Year by the International Franchise Association.

John Rotche, president of the Belfor Franchise Group headquartered in Ann Arbor, believes that life is made up of a series of building blocks, which, in his case, raised him to the level of being named the 2012 Entrepreneur of the Year by the International Franchise Association.
Before reaching that distinction, Rotche's days involved some heavy lifting that spanned from recovering fully from an injury that left him a quadriplegic at the age of 18, to establishing two successful national franchises from a business that began out of his daughter's bedroom.
"It's the highest honor in franchising. What I'm probably most proud of is the class that I'm with -- Fred De Luca, founder of Subway; Tom Monaghan, founder of Domino's; Bill Marriott," Rotche said. "The tough thing is that only my name is on the trophy. We have over 200 franchisees' names that should be on that. We have the corporate staff whose names should be on that. So, I accepted the award on behalf of them."
One reason Rotche believes that he and his team won the award is for the success of his two franchises: DUCTZ, the nation's largest air duct cleaning and indoor air quality company with more than 175 locations, and a national service team of world traveling contractors to clean mechanical systems, particularly after major disasters; and HOODZ Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning, which began in 2009 and now has more than 150 locations.
Another reason Rotche believes he was recognized is for starting "Franship"-a mentorship program for the IFA to assist people working in the field of franchising.
The Ann Arbor resident's ability to overcome adversity was tested early in life when a football injury left him unable to walk and accept the spot he had earned on the University of Michigan's football team. However, Rotche said that experience opened up an opportunity for him to be part of the coaching staff under the late Bo Schembechler.

Coaching changes: The other March Madness

GREENSBORO, North Carolina - What do Martin Newton, Scott Stricklin and Eric Hyman, among others, have in common?
They're all Division I athletics directors in search of a new head basketball coach.
Coaching changes: The other March Madness.
One meeting with your boss and you're done. At some places. Others can take longer.
If you're not here, or at one of the seven other sites for the second and third rounds of the NCAA Tournament, you may be nowhere.
Do you think Rick Stansbury would've "retired" Thursday after 14 years as head coach at Mississippi State if this weren't the third straight year he missed the dance? If he hadn't failed to advance beyond the first weekend in each of his six NCAA appearances?
Would South Carolina have swallowed Darrin Horn's hefty buyout if he'd gone to the tournament at least once during his four years there?
How much easier was it for Newton to end Jimmy Tillette's 15-year tenure because the coach's back-to-back NCAA trips came more than a decade ago?
Anthony Grant made his own coaching life a little easier by pushing Alabama through its series of injuries and suspensions and into the field for the first time in his three years in Tuscaloosa. He'll gather a little more capital here today if the Tide can take down Creighton. He also might start to show up on the radar of other schools. If he's not already there. Looking at you, Illinois.
Different schools with job openings have different needs. Samford's Newton, Mississippi State's Stricklin and South Carolina's Hyman will be fishing in different ponds, but they should have something in common beyond the ability to hand someone the keys to a Division I program.

How to Beat Competitors With Authenticity and Passion

Thats what made it so hard to build credibility in any industry. So many companies operate with the same short-term mindset and only have one goal: make as much money as possible in the least amount of time. They make outrageous claims and dont deliver the results;they shut down their websites and create new ones over and over again.Unfortunately, this cycle causes people to discount all online weight loss companies as scams, making it much harder for the few authentic companies to make an honest impression.
I knew that my website had to stand out and read completely differently.Instead of the typical highlighted website where viewers scroll endlessly through claim after claimwithout any contact informationI made myself the main focus, with mypicture, phone number, Facebook profile and address listed on the homepage, front and center.I wanted to prove that I do live what I teach, soI told my story of how Ive been obsessed with exercise and nutrition since elementary school, complete with a page of pictures and a link to my personal blog.I put my personal screen name on the site and encouraged people to message me with questions, and I spent hours answering all of those questions.
After all, if I couldnt stand by what I was offering 1,000 percent, why even bother selling it?I believed so strongly in my offeringthis is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! In my eyes, I had only one job: to let people know who I was and why I was so passionate about helping people lose weight.
It worked.Even though I didnt have any success stories, testimonials or press at first, everyone who inquired about my program recognized my passion.Slowly but surely, collecting success story after success story, and amazing result after amazing result, allowed my business and I to build more and more credibility. Word spread, journalists and bloggers started calling, and soon my business has been featured on Good Morning America, AOL.com and more.
Though I no longer worry about building credibility, I nowfocus on maintaining the credibility that put us on the map. Its all about adopting a long-term mindset: my product is only as good as its most recent success story!
