Thesys International's Hybrid Courses Achieve CLRN Certification
Posted: at 7:52 pm
ANAHEIM, CA--(Marketwire -03/27/12)- Thesys International, an education technology business that supports schools with a hybrid online/classroom approach to education, has earned California Learning Resource Network (CLRN) certification for three core English courses that meet the California Department of Education's standards alignment, legal compliance and minimum requirements.
Thesys offers hybrid courses for public, independent, charter and international high schools, with rigorous courses designed for advanced students. Curricula meet both Common Core State Standards and University of California (UC) requirements. This recent CLRN certification signifies that Thesys is meeting the highest level industry standards.
Since 1999, CLRN has acted on behalf of the California Department of Education to deliver a one-stop shop for the selection of supplemental learning resources aligned to the State Board of Education academic content standards, including the information that's critical in choosing such programs.
The CLRN review process covers legal compliance, standards alignment and minimum requirements. The network's objectives are to identify and review supplemental electronic learning resources such as software, video and Internet resources; identify learning units aligned to resources and state academic content standards; and maintain an interactive website to provide information about electronic learning resources through a searchable online database and links to state education technology projects and resources.
CLRN certified Thesys Innovation's hybrid English I (Common Core), English II (Common Core) and English III (Common Core) courses. All three courses are approved for inclusion on CLRN's website.
"Receiving this endorsement from CLRN is an exciting step that will allow educators throughout California to bring Thesys' innovation into the classroom," says Alan Rudi, Principal Solutions Strategist at Thesys International. "And they can do so with the confidence that the hybrid learning courses have met the rigorous standards of the State Board of Education."

The purchase price is $33 million in cash, subject to working capital adjustments.
The sale of the Higher Education Readiness Division occurs as the company increasingly focuses on the growth and market expansion of its Penn Foster Division, a global leader in online education that provides career-focused degree and vocational programs in the fields of allied health, business, technology, education, and select other trades in the US, Canada and over 150 other countries around the world.
"We have been fortunate to be the steward of two world class brands in The Princeton Review and Penn Foster," said John M. Connolly, the company's interim CEO. "And, although the mission of both brands is fundamentally similar to promote and enable student achievement the needs and growth strategies of each brand are unique. Consequently, the sale of The Princeton Review brand will enable the buyer to continue fostering the brand's growth and prosperity while affording us the ability to increase our focus and energy on Penn Foster's success. We're very excited about the opportunities that this sale presents for both brands."
Under the terms of the purchase agreement, the company will sell substantially all the assets of the Higher Education Readiness Division, including all rights in the name The Princeton Review, to Charlesbank affiliate TPR Education, LLC, which will assume certain designated obligations of the business outstanding as of the closing of the transaction. The sale closing, which is subject to conditions including the receipt of certain third party consents, is expected to occur within 30 to 45 days. In connection with the sale, the company, which will serve as a holding company for the Penn Foster business, will cease to be known as The Princeton Review and will formally adopt a new, to be determined, corporate name.

YOUTHFUL LIFE: Yoga Keeps Centenarian Young

One Des Moines resident credits the art of yoga as the medicine she needs to keep her up and running.
One reason I feel younger is because I take yoga and it keeps me limber, says Maurine Diehl.
Maurine isnt your typical yoga student.
Im a hundred; Im passed a hundred now, says Diehl.
Along with about a dozen residents at Scottish Rite Park, Maurine takes chair yoga, a class adapted to senior citizens to keep them flexible and moving.
We are surprised here with the results, because all of them have a lot of challenges with their health, and they tell me I walk because I do this, I can move and stand up and do everything because I exercise, says yoga instructor, Ofelia Mohr.
As the classes oldest student, Maurine says yoga gives her something to look forward to and keeps her on her toes.
I come because it makes me feel so good, it keeps me limber and it keeps me feeling well, says Diehl.
The class which meets three times a week has become a staple in many of the students lives, giving them abilities and strength to live without the use of a wheel chair or cane.

'Broga' caters to guys wary of yoga

Robert Sidoti leads students through a class at the Somerville, Mass., studio.
By Cari Nierenberg
Tired of hearing a wife, girlfriend, mother, sister or female friend sing the praises of yoga, some guys will eventually man up and tag along to a class. Once there, in many studios, he might be one of few downward facing dudes.
Being the only man surrounded by a room of limber ladies in tight-fitting yoga pants might sound like paradise. But it gets rough when the gal on the next mat can touch her nose to her knees and the guy can barely bend over to reach his toes.
Feeling self-consciousness and possibly embarrassed, a guy may retreat to his man cave convinced that yoga is not for him. It's too New Age-y or hippie-ish. Or not macho enough. Or too damn hard.
Enter broga -- a yoga class geared for men.
"We're a yoga class geared for guys, but open to all," says Adam O'Neill, president and co-founder of Broga, which is based in Somerville, Mass. Although women are welcome in class, it's designed with a man in mind.
"We chose the name broga because it's funny, catchy, and familiar. It lets men know this is for them," O'Neill explains.
"On the one hand, we don't take ourselves too seriously. But broga is a real thing with real integrity," points out O'Neill. Classes, he says, work from the familiar to the unfamiliar.
