Robert Kraft to Be Inducted to Columbia University Athletics Hall of Fame

Posted: June 19, 2012 at 6:20 am

As owner of the New England Patriots, Robert Kraft is used to success. However, Kraft has found some of his own personal success -- away from Gillette Stadium.

Columbia University announced on Monday that Kraft will be inducted in the 2012 class of the Columbia University Athletics Hall of Fame.

Kraft earned a bachelor's degree in history and economics from Columbia in 1963. Kraft was a member of the freshman football team in 1959 and the varsity lightweight football team in 1960, earning two letters in football. An injury ended his playing career early in his junior year.

As an alumnus, Kraft has remained active at Columbia, serving as a University trustee for two six-year terms. He was awarded the Alexander Hamilton Medal, the highest honor for a member of the Columbia community, in late 2004.

The induction ceremony will be held Thursday, October 18, 2012 at the Low Memorial Library on Columbia University's Morningside campus. Tickets to the ceremony and black-tie dinner are available by calling Cathleen Clark at (212) 851-9610.

FOSTER CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--IndiaEducation.com, Indias largest online education portal, has published the first two installments of its new ongoing series of college- and career-focused e-books. India has an estimated 144 million adults between 18 and 23 years old, the target age group for higher education. "Planning for college and a career are big decisions in a young persons life, shared Nina Bhanap, spokesperson for IndiaEducation.com. Being able to provide high quality, accurate and timely resources and materials to assist students and graduates is just one way that we can help with the process.

Celcom launches new e-learning portal for students

Posted: at 6:19 am

KUALA LUMPUR: Celcom Axiata Bhd has launched a three-in-one online education service to help students prepare for their UPSR, PMR and SPM examination.

Known as Educube, the e-learning portal incorporates school, tuition and exams and offers over 70,000 questions with six key modules for students, including multimedia lessons, topical exercise, online notes, online report card and e-assessment.

Celcom Axiata Bhd Advanced Data chief operations Afizulazha Abdullah said the Educube would enable students to revise for their exams and enhance their learning experience in a fun and interactive way at any time via their computers, smartphones and tablets.

Education is the key. This is part of our initiative to provide an alternative and fun learning adventure for students in an affordable manner.

Its content is based on the official education curriculum and it's constantly moulded to deliver an innovative educational experience, he said at the launch of Educube here yesterday.

Students, he said, would also be given immediate feedback on their performance to help them identify their weak points and improve accordingly.

Schools and students can also participate in the online exams for UPSR, PMR and SPM where they can gauge their standing compared to others. Those who perform well in their actual tests will be rewarded.

Parents and teachers would also be able to monitor the students' performance via an online report card.

The Educube is available to both Celcom subscribers and non-subscribers at RM4.99 a month via an immediate SMS subscription and Educube cards respectively.

Non-subscribers can get the prepaid cards at Blue Cube outlets from next week, he said.

New Venture Connects US Teachers Online

Posted: at 6:19 am

Discussing education reform at Stanford University last year, the leader of one of the nation's largest teacher unions decided to turn the tables and ask a question of the audience.

"You're all technology people," said Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers. "Could you actually help us?"

Weingarten said she received one call from Louise Rogers, chief executive of TSL Education, a United Kingdom-based company that operates an online network that lets teachers around the globe access, review and discuss lesson plans and other learning materials.

The result of that call, to be unveiled Tuesday, is Share My Lesson, an online portal that teachers will be able to access free of charge. It is expected to contain more than 100,000 user-generated materials.

"We've been trying to find a way to have teachers be able to access information quickly, actively and share with each other," Weingarten said. "It felt to me almost too good to be true, that some private entity had created a platform for teachers to be able to share."

Share My Lesson is expected to be the largest online resource for teachers in the U.S. and comes at a time when cuts to education budgets have led many districts to slash professional development. AFT and TSL have pledged $10 million to develop and maintain the site, which should be ready for teachers by August.

AP

"We must support the incredibly complex work teachers do at every opportunity, including by sharing and promoting best practices through online resources and communities of practice," Education Secretary Arne Duncan said.

He said the program would benefit teachers everywhere.

Teacher preparation and development in the United States vary dramatically. While some schools help beginning and veteran teachers hone and perfect their craft, many others complain of being left to their own devices to learn the best ways to communicate and teach students with different skill levels in one class.

Pilates of Fayetteville studio closing

Posted: at 3:16 am

By Jennifer Calhoun Staff writer

Fayetteville's only full-service Pilates studio will close its doors June 29 after five years in business.

Malinda Craven, who co-owns Pilates of Fayetteville with Sandy Fisher, said business had been good and was growing. But they struggled to find instructors certified in the training required for the studio and its equipment.

Pilates, named for creator Joseph Pilates, is a system of exercise that emphasizes developing core strength and flexibility. Some instruction can be done on a mat, while others do exercises on various machines that use pulleys and resistance.

The studio is located in a 2,000-square foot rented space at Ferncreek Center just off Raeford Road and offers several morning and afternoon classes during the week, as well as private instruction and a few classes during the weekend.

Most gyms and fitness centers that offer Pilates instruction in Fayetteville do not offer a full range of equipment and classes, including instruction on the Pilates machines.

It can be costly for instructors to obtain full certification to teach clients on the machines - around $6,000, Craven said.

"Some of our best instructors were (affiliated with the) military," she said. "We've had a lot of them transfer."

The lack of personnel made for long and exhausting work days for Craven and the three remaining instructors, she said.

"If I were 35 again, I might continue to make a go of it," she said. "But I'm 53, and I like spending time with my husband."

Lift helps seniors make a ‘splash’

Bossier Council on Aging uses new lift to help with summer water aerobics class

Senior citizens are making a big splash this summer. The Bossier Council on Aging is offering local seniors a full-body, low-impact water aerobics class three days a week at the Ft. Smith public swimming pool. Jackie Conner of Bossier City has been an instructor for 20 years now and said her 45 minute class reaches everything from the eyes to the tips of the toes.

I do this for the benefit of the seniors and for those who may have health problems, Conner said. It's something that will move every part of your body.

Donald Oakley of Bossier City is a newcomer to Conners class this year. In his second summer with the BCOA, Oakley said he is enjoying time in the pool thanks to a new lift installed this year.

Oakley, who had his right leg amputated at the knee two years ago, is one of two seniors using a remote controlled automated handicap chair lift to get safely in and out of the pool.

According to Clay Bohanan, Director of the Department of Parks & Recreation, the new lift was installed this year to meet state and federal law.

The lift we had there originally was outdated and old, Bohanan said. We went ahead and installed a new lift there and at the other two public pools also.

Last summer, Oakley wondered if he would ever get the chance to get in the water.

Gee, I wish I could get in there, he recalled thinking as he passed by the pool.

Oakley said the new lift is a God-send.
