In praise of performance

June 11, 2012:

When a product that we buy lets us down with shoddy performance, many of us tend to react by complaining, and perhaps rightly so. But think about it. How often do we try to be vocal in our appreciation when we come across outstanding products?

My dad, a retired professor, now in his late seventies, took one such initiative in my childhood and in the process demonstrated to his five children the power of expressing gratitude.

My elder sister had delivered her baby and was yet to be discharged from a hospital in Tuticorin where we lived then. A teenager, I was running errands, shuttling between home and hospital. Reaching our house, I was shocked to see my father sitting alone in a room, with tears trickling down his cheeks.

What worries you dad ? I walked up to him and asked. Pointing to something on the table, he said, Worry ? Nay, my son. Sheer ecstasy on seeing that member of our house! Member ? I see no one around, dad.

I was concerned about his emotional state when he snapped, You mean only the animate can qualify as members? What about that majestic vacuum flask sitting on the table? It has been with me through thick and thin. He started pouring out as moisture laced his eyes.

I bought this flask three decades ago. It has stayed with me through your mother's five deliveries. There were times when your mother or I or some relative who visited us took ill. Every time, this flask would be pressed into service and it would flawlessly dish out piping hot water, steaming horlicks or sizzling filter coffee.

Just before your sister's delivery, I noticed that the outer shell of the flask had rusted. I took it to a local store and the salesperson transformed it, replacing the outer tin sheet. In this new avatar, the flask has started to faithfully serve gen next.

I am sorry I didn't know its history, dad.

Camp a stepping stone to success

Posted: at 2:21 pm

ZANESVILLE --For Zanesville High School graduate Josh Mason, Creating Artists, Stimulating Success Camp has been a stepping stone to his personal success.

He attributes his Rotary award for leadership and Class A Superior rating from solo and ensemble competition for upright bass from the guidance he received from nine years of participation in the youth camps. He now is paying it forward by serving as a mentor to current students.

"If it wasn't for CASS Camp, I probably wouldn't have pursued my music in high school, and wouldn't be considering music as my college major," said Mason, who is planning to attend Muskingum University.

He is spending the week as a camp counselor to help others work toward their future goals.

"I love working with the students. They are the best group you could ask for. We are going to give them that extra push," he said.

The ninth annual CASS Camp began Sunday at Hallowed Hills Conference Center and will continue through Friday. Throughout the week, students will participate in projects geared toward helping them achieve self-esteem, self-confidence and self-awareness in preparation for future careers. Free concerts that are open to the public will take place each evening. Students can continue to register throughout the week.

CASS Camp is part of the nonprofit self-improvement organization CASS-MIND (Creating Artists, Stimulating Success/Making Impact, Negotiating Decisions) founded by life coach Cassandra McDonald.

McDonald said participants had the opportunity to select a business or performing arts category for the week to hone their talents and skills. However, each participant will have opportunities to bring their creative and logical skills together, McDonald said.

"You need both. The purpose of the camp is to balance both sides," she said, adding that expanding both types of talents helps in future career choices. "Every interview is a performance, every outfit is a costume and every stand is a pose. You never speak, dress or stand without a purpose."

CASS Camp is open to all students from kindergarten through 12th grade, with overnight camp for those in seven through 12th grade. New this year is a project that mimics the popular TV show "The Apprentice." In addition, participants will be working with music instructor Craig Lane, of Detroit, throughout the week to create a DVD, and can select from band, drama, sign language, puppets, strings, chorus, vocals or piano for the presentation.

BEDFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

iWalk, the personal bionics company advancing technology to restore natural movement for lower-limb amputees, today announced the availability of its BiOM bionic lower limb system for above-knee amputees (BiOM AK). The new BiOM AK is an ankle system that works with select microprocessor knees to restore natural motion through personalized bionic technology. Personal bionic devices are fundamentally redefining the standard of care for those with limb loss by not merely emulating human function, but enhancing it.

The BiOM has advanced the craft of prosthetics using the science of bionics to replicate lost muscles and tendons. The BiOMs unique technology delivers a powered push-off that propels an amputee forward and normalizes their gait. This personal bionic system is the worlds first proven bionic intervention that utilizes robotics to restore the function of the missing anatomy in the calf muscle and Achilles tendon.

I still cant get over the feel of the lift and the amount of energy that the device provides me on a regular basis, said Judy Gray, a BiOM AK user. I walk more and more each day without pain or any need for anti-inflammatory or pain relief medication. It has taken over 38 years, but I finally feel like I have my leg back.

The BiOM AK provides above-knee amputees with the same benefits that below-knee amputees using the BiOM already enjoy:

Bionic technology is the most transcendent development in the history of patient care for those living with limb loss, said Tim McCarthy, iWalk president and CEO. Our personal bionics solutions reflect this promise by restoring natural motion for the amputeealleviating comorbidities and improving their overall health. No other prosthetic technology even comes close to matching this performance.

The Dos and Don’ts for Actors’ Websites

Hacking Hollywood The Dos and Donts for Actors Websites

By Taryn Southern

June 12, 2012

Taryn Southern

Im always a fan of the DIY mantra, but unless youre super skilled like Ben Whitehair or Ethan Newberry (actor/web designer/programmer extraordinaires), youre going to have to hire a web designer. Or start dating one. Both are acceptable solutions.

Either way, you still need to know exactly what your site needs, what to avoid, and most importantly, how to communicate these needs to your web designer.

Hopefully the following advice will help you avoid some of the more common website-related pitfalls. Happy web designing! Top 5Mistakes Actors Make on Their Websites

1. Amateur Design - Theres a lot of crap out there. ALWAYS look at a portfolio of someones work before hiring them. If their sites look like something straight out of Youve Got Mail, steer clear. An outdated website is worse than any website at all.

2. Third person blogs - Unless youre a huge star, its just plain weird to write your news and/or blog updates in the third person. Its YOUR website, so people expect for it to be personal. The exception with this is your bio, which can be written in first or third person, but avoid mistake #3 3. Overly pompous language - It is incredibly annoying to read bios peppered with cheesy self-importance, i.e. With her incredible work ethic and talent, Taryn is on the rise to becoming Hollywoods next big starlet! Barf. Think like a journalist and stick to facts. What are your credits? Hobbies? Feel free to be funny, just not egotistical.

4. Flash website - Ten years ago, flash was the bomb diggity. Unfortunately, its quickly becoming a useless format because its not compatible with smart phones and iPads. (Not to mention the loading times can often be quite annoying.) Make sure your website is being built in HTML5, the most common and adaptable mark up language on the web. 5. Un-updateable website - If you cant update your website with new photos, videos, bios, and/or news on your own, you have a major problem. Make sure that however your website is built - Joomla, WordPress, etc. - that you have access to a backend and you understand how to update the website elements. Have your designer walk you through the process when the site is complete so you can avoid having to email him/her with annoying updates.
