Fetter's 5-hit night a personal best

Posted: June 14, 2012 at 3:25 am

Travis Fetters incredible 5-of-6 night at the plate Friday against Stanly County was an historic night for him. He knocked out two milestones in one game with his first four-hit and five-hit games in his baseball career.

The performance also catapulted him over the .400 mark in hitting. Fetters average went up 64 points, and he leads Statesville with a .432 batting average, nine points above Lance Clanton.

That jumped his batting average quite a bit, Statesville head coach Trey Ramsey said.

He also has a team-high six doubles and is tied for second on the team with Colby Dishmond with 10 RBIs. Sam Laws leads Statesville with 11 RBIs.

In six innings as a relief pitcher, he has allowed only two earned runs on three hits. He pitched three shutout innings June 1 in a 6-5 victory over Mooresville Post 66. That time on the mound included a pair of huge strikeouts to end the eighth and ninth innings.

Fetter is one of the hardest workers and biggest competitors I have ever coached, Ramsey said. He is having a good year.

Post 65, Post 66 coming off long rest

Statesville Post 65 and the Mooresville Post 66 Moors have been idle since Friday. Statesville went into its five days of rest with a 12-5 victory at Stanly County while the Moors went into theirs with a 10-9 loss at home to Concord.

Both teams resume play Thursday with two weeks left in the regular season. Statesville is at home in the first of back-to-back games against Kannapolis.

Kannapolis (10-3, 9-3) is in second place behind Mocksville-Davie (9-5, 6-2) in the Area III Southern Division standings. Statesville Post 65 (5-7, 4-5) is in seventh place.

Bold Looks and Key Demographic Divergences Ignite the U.S. Personal Care Market, Reveals Kline

Posted: at 3:25 am

PARSIPPANY, N.J., June 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --New trends in nail care, dramatic eye looks, and the appeal of limited edition scents significantly bolstered sales in the 2011 U.S. personal care market, which exceeded $38 billion at the manufacturers' level, surpassing pre-recession levels and representing robust growth of 4.2%, according to the recent Cosmetics & Toiletries USAreport from global consulting and research firm Kline & Company.

Makeup sales comfortably exceeded the industry average growth rate, boosted by an astonishing near 30% growth of the nail polishes subcategory in 2011. The magnitude of this growth was partly caused by the emergence of new trends, including bold colors and special effects that attracted women of all demographics. The category was additionally augmented by innovation in application techniques, which could be seen in products such as Sally Hansen Salon Effects and Nail Inc.'s Magnetic Polish.

Eye makeup, supported by the season's popular "smoky-eye" look, saw a strong increase in 2011. Eye shadow, eye liner, and mascara, all used to complete the dramatic eye look, contributed to the growth seen in all trade classes.

After several years of declining sales, fragrances for women experienced high growth in 2011 as more consumers turned to fragrances as an affordable indulgence. The luxury trade class in particular experienced above-average growth of over 10%, where niche fragrances were a new trend in 2011. Limited distribution scents from brands such as Bond No. 9, Creed, and By Kilian gained high visibility during the period. Conversely, celebrity scents saw substantial declines.

Looking at the usage of cosmetics and toiletries by specific demographic groups, Kline's consumer research has found that a higher percentage of Hispanics use perfume or cologne regularly, at 56% of all Hispanics, as compared to 32% of the non-Hispanic population. Furthermore, about half of African Americans use perfumes or colognes regularly, as compared to one-third of Caucasians and Asians in the United States.

The ever resilient skin care product class, dominated by facial treatments, remains the largest product class. Men's skin care became more popular, seeing the best growth in several years and now offering expanded product lines exploring new applications by creating solutions for men, such as concealers, products free of parabens, formaldehydes, dyes, and added fragrances.

The cosmetics and toiletries market continued its upward trend due to an especially strong performance in the luxury class, which saw nearly double-digit growth. Analysis also reveals that all trade classes posted gains in 2011. "The comparatively low growth in the professional class correlates with the greater trend we're observing with consumers' relatively moderate expenditure on professional services," explains Nancy Mills, Kline's Consumer Practice Industry Manager. "And yet, driven by 'frugal-fatigue' and a rising financial confidence, consumers are compensating by purchasing premium products as affordable luxuries driving sales in the luxury and mass trade classes."

Looking ahead, Kline projects skin care and makeup to maintain exceptionally high growth over the next five years. Additionally, Mills expects the dominating drivers in personal care to be multi-functional products that deliver promised results, a gradual replacement of harsh synthetic chemicals with more natural-derived products, and an adoption of a more overt environmentally responsible profile.

These trends are examined in Kline's recently published Cosmetics & Toiletries USA report. As an authoritative and comprehensive annual survey on the U.S. cosmetics and toiletries industry, this high-value study contains information on cosmetics and toiletries market size, retail sales, channel breakdowns, trends, and forecasts for 26 major product categories in addition to detailed profiles of 29 leading marketers.

About KlineKline is a worldwide consulting and research firm dedicated to providing the kind of insight and knowledge that helps companies find a clear path to success. Vidyo Breaks Cost Barriers for Multi-Vendor, Multi-Device Video Conferencing Interoperability with Microsoft Lync

Posted: at 3:24 am

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Vidyo, Inc., the first company to deliver personal telepresence, today announced it will deliver extended interoperability with Microsoft Lync, which will enable organizations that use Microsoft Lync to offer employees the benefits of the Vidyo platform. The VidyoConferencing infrastructure provides continuous presence video layout to the Lync client as well as enables Lync interoperability with legacy systems and Vidyo endpoints at price points and scale not available in the market today. This enhanced support will allow Lync users to work with Vidyo's award-winning multipoint, HD video conferencing with the choice to use the most suitable endpoint for their collaboration meetings.

"The requirement for IT organizations to support hybrid environments for video conferencing with disparate desktop and mobile devices, room systems from multiple vendors, and geographic locations is increasing," said Ashish Gupta, Vidyo's CMO and SVP Corporate Development. "Extending the VidyoConferencing infrastructure to support Microsoft Lync will deliver multipoint conferencing and interoperability to Lync users at a lower cost than hardware-based legacy systems with up to seven fold savings.

With the increasing number of people incorporating visual communication into their daily personal and work experiences, HD-quality video conferences are becoming the norm to many. In addition to delivering HD-quality experiences on a full range of devices, from smart phones and tablets to immersive telepresence rooms, Vidyos interoperability with Lync will allow organizations to have users join a Vidyo conference from any device.

"Different work roles have different needs in terms of video conferencing," said Zeus Kerravala, Founder and Principal, ZK Research. "Vidyo meets the demands of those employees looking for multiparty conferences from heterogeneous endpoints and networks. The addition of Vidyos interoperability with Microsoft Lync gives a company's CIO the option to provide the Vidyo solution to those who need to engage in HD-quality multipoint conferences, while at the same time gives them the ability to connect easily with other users on Lync or traditional VC solutions."

Extended Interoperability with Microsoft Lync

The enhancements being made to the VidyoGateway to interoperate with Microsoft Lync complements the plug-ins Vidyo delivers today for Microsoft Lync and Microsoft Outlook and provides users the flexibility to utilize the conferencing solution best suited for their meeting and benefits from:

The Vidyo Difference

The Vidyo communication and collaboration platform is software-based, highly flexible and can be easily customized for individual enterprise and vertical market video conferencing needs. The patented VidyoRouter architecture employs Adaptive Video Layering, which dynamically optimizes the video for each endpoint leveraging H.264 Scalable Video Coding (SVC)-based compression technology and Vidyos IP. Adaptive Video Layering eliminates the MCU and offers unprecedented error resiliency, low latency rate and resolution-matching that enables natural, affordable, high-quality video to work over the Internet, LTE and 4G networks. The platform allows users to quickly leverage the latest hardware innovations and new consumer devices, making it uniquely attractive to partners. Vidyo has been active driving H.264 SVC and SIP videoconferencing interoperability in various standards bodies since 2005. Vidyo platform partners include Ricoh, Google, Hitachi, Teliris and Intel.

Indiana University Launches Online MPA from No. 2-ranked School of Public and Environmental Affairs

Posted: at 3:24 am

BLOOMINGTON, Ind., June 13, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Indiana University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs is launching an online Master of Public Affairs (MPA) degree through SPEA Connect, becoming the highest-ranked MPA program to make its degree completely available in an online format.

The online MPA, approved recently by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, will give students and working professionals access to one of the world's leading public affairs programs, allowing them to continue their careers while learning new skills and furthering their education. SPEA's graduate programs are ranked No. 2 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

"Online education enables SPEA to effectively reach working professionals and allows us to help fill a critical need in their professional development and careers," SPEA Dean John D. Graham said. "Our MPA program produces graduates with strong problem-solving and analytical skills and is additionally coupled with a sound interdisciplinary approach. Our online MPA students will meet the same standards for quality and academic rigor as their on-campus peers."

The online MPA addresses the fact that, in today's challenging economic environment, many professionals are unable or unwilling to commit to a full-time graduate program that could force them to uproot families and put their careers on hold. SPEA Connect, a joint initiative between IU Bloomington and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, allows learners around the world to earn a prestigious degree without having to relocate.

"We believe our online MPA is an ideal opportunity for mid-career professionals, whether they are located in Washington, D.C., or Kinshasa, Congo, to further their knowledge and career prospects without having to leave their families and jobs," Distinguished Professor James Perry said. Perry is the director of online education at SPEA and worked closely with his faculty colleagues to design and deliver an online curriculum that will meet the diverse needs of online students and working professionals.

Not only will the online MPA provide broader access to a SPEA education, the degree will offer great value when compared to its residential and online peers.

"As a top-ranked public affairs program, SPEA is highly sensitive to the potential debt burden that graduate education can bring, and SPEA Connect's tuition levels have been set to reflect the public nature of our school," SPEA Executive Associate Dean David Reingold said.

In addition to the online MPA degree program, SPEA Connect allows students the opportunity to pursue online graduate certificates in public and nonprofit management. SPEA Connect also plans to offer an online graduate certificate in public budgeting and financial management in the near future.

For more information about SPEA Connect's online MPA and graduate certificate programs please visit http://www.speaconnect.indiana.edu.

Khan Academy founder talks online education success

Posted: at 3:23 am

(CBS News) Could education one day be free - and perhaps be teacher-free? In a way, that's how Sal Khan sees it.

Six years ago, Khan - the man Bill Gates called "his favorite teacher" - created Khan Academy, an online non-profit school with more than 2,300 educational videos in 12 languages that are all completely free.

Khan said on "CBS This Morning" that his educational videos are all about taking the stress out of learning and making concepts approachable. He began the educational videos to help his family.

"(The videos) feel like I'm sitting next to you at the kitchen table and they're very conversational, off-the-cuff sometimes. And I think that's kind of caught on a little bit," he said. "People feel, when you learn something, it's a very stressful experience. I think people have under emphasized how important tone is and not being condescending and being very conversational. I think that and the breadth of the content that's there has gotten people engaged."

Watch below: "60 Minutes" Khan Academy: The future of education?

The success of the website Khan said has been "surreal." He said, "It started in 2006. I was making videos for cousins and it was a hobby. Even two years ago, I was just operating literally out of a closet. So now that we're at five, six million students using it every month, it's surreal. I try not to think about it too much."

For more with Khan on the future of the educational initiative, watch the video in the player above.

Stephen Ross promises improvements to Miami Dolphins, Sun Life Stadium

Posted: at 2:23 pm

Dolphins season-ticket holders on the Monday evening conference call with franchise owner Stephen Ross should have no doubt: Ross likes to roll with the new.

New look for the Dolphins stadium, new look for the Dolphins uniforms, new coaching staff, new results leading to new game times. And, yes, not the old Dolphins fight song.

Taking that last part first season-ticket holders brought up the fight song more than anything else Ross insisted he retains a distaste for the banjo-strummed ode to the early 1970s Dolphins (later ripped off by the late 1970s Houston Oilers). The songs exposure in Sun Life Stadium will be limited to Dolphins scores while the teams ahead with Jimmy Buffets Fins blaring after other Dolphins scores.

The one thing I never liked from Day One was the fight song, Ross said. I guess thats part of the privilege of ownership, but I understand the fans like it, so that will continue to be our policy.

As far as that team on the field, Ross responded positively when one season-ticket holder proposed a fashion makeover for the Dolphins.

I totally agree with you, Ross said. Were looking at all of that.

The Marlins went for new threads upon leaving Sun Life for Marlins Park. Dolphins CEO Mike Dee said that departure could allow for some other changes to 25-year-old Sun Life Stadium.

The Dolphins want to move the sideline stands closer to the field, something that should please fans who have spent 25 years sighing that even a full house in Miami Gardens doesnt rock with an intimidating feel the way the Orange Bowl could. Dee claimed Sun Life has the largest seat-to-field distance in the NFL.

Ross reiterated the Dolphins drive to make improvements to Sun Life that would satisfy the NFL enough to bring Super Bowl L to South Florida. He mentioned the concept the Dolphins showed the NFL two years ago, a stadium canopy that would keep the fans dry on rainy days (such as Super Bowl XLI) and in the shade on sunny ones.

I think by the end of the summer, well have some plan to present to you and the league, Ross said. Its never going to be an enclosed stadium. Nobody in Florida wants to be in a dome [for football].
