Celcom launches new e-learning portal for students

Posted: June 19, 2012 at 6:19 am

KUALA LUMPUR: Celcom Axiata Bhd has launched a three-in-one online education service to help students prepare for their UPSR, PMR and SPM examination.

Known as Educube, the e-learning portal incorporates school, tuition and exams and offers over 70,000 questions with six key modules for students, including multimedia lessons, topical exercise, online notes, online report card and e-assessment.

Celcom Axiata Bhd Advanced Data chief operations Afizulazha Abdullah said the Educube would enable students to revise for their exams and enhance their learning experience in a fun and interactive way at any time via their computers, smartphones and tablets.

Education is the key. This is part of our initiative to provide an alternative and fun learning adventure for students in an affordable manner.

Its content is based on the official education curriculum and it's constantly moulded to deliver an innovative educational experience, he said at the launch of Educube here yesterday.

Students, he said, would also be given immediate feedback on their performance to help them identify their weak points and improve accordingly.

Schools and students can also participate in the online exams for UPSR, PMR and SPM where they can gauge their standing compared to others. Those who perform well in their actual tests will be rewarded.

Parents and teachers would also be able to monitor the students' performance via an online report card.

The Educube is available to both Celcom subscribers and non-subscribers at RM4.99 a month via an immediate SMS subscription and Educube cards respectively.

Non-subscribers can get the prepaid cards at Blue Cube outlets from next week, he said.

New Venture Connects US Teachers Online

Posted: at 6:19 am

Discussing education reform at Stanford University last year, the leader of one of the nation's largest teacher unions decided to turn the tables and ask a question of the audience.

"You're all technology people," said Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers. "Could you actually help us?"

Weingarten said she received one call from Louise Rogers, chief executive of TSL Education, a United Kingdom-based company that operates an online network that lets teachers around the globe access, review and discuss lesson plans and other learning materials.

The result of that call, to be unveiled Tuesday, is Share My Lesson, an online portal that teachers will be able to access free of charge. It is expected to contain more than 100,000 user-generated materials.

"We've been trying to find a way to have teachers be able to access information quickly, actively and share with each other," Weingarten said. "It felt to me almost too good to be true, that some private entity had created a platform for teachers to be able to share."

Share My Lesson is expected to be the largest online resource for teachers in the U.S. and comes at a time when cuts to education budgets have led many districts to slash professional development. AFT and TSL have pledged $10 million to develop and maintain the site, which should be ready for teachers by August.

AP

"We must support the incredibly complex work teachers do at every opportunity, including by sharing and promoting best practices through online resources and communities of practice," Education Secretary Arne Duncan said.

He said the program would benefit teachers everywhere.

Teacher preparation and development in the United States vary dramatically. While some schools help beginning and veteran teachers hone and perfect their craft, many others complain of being left to their own devices to learn the best ways to communicate and teach students with different skill levels in one class.

Pilates of Fayetteville studio closing

Posted: at 3:16 am

By Jennifer Calhoun Staff writer

Fayetteville's only full-service Pilates studio will close its doors June 29 after five years in business.

Malinda Craven, who co-owns Pilates of Fayetteville with Sandy Fisher, said business had been good and was growing. But they struggled to find instructors certified in the training required for the studio and its equipment.

Pilates, named for creator Joseph Pilates, is a system of exercise that emphasizes developing core strength and flexibility. Some instruction can be done on a mat, while others do exercises on various machines that use pulleys and resistance.

The studio is located in a 2,000-square foot rented space at Ferncreek Center just off Raeford Road and offers several morning and afternoon classes during the week, as well as private instruction and a few classes during the weekend.

Most gyms and fitness centers that offer Pilates instruction in Fayetteville do not offer a full range of equipment and classes, including instruction on the Pilates machines.

It can be costly for instructors to obtain full certification to teach clients on the machines - around $6,000, Craven said.

"Some of our best instructors were (affiliated with the) military," she said. "We've had a lot of them transfer."

The lack of personnel made for long and exhausting work days for Craven and the three remaining instructors, she said.

"If I were 35 again, I might continue to make a go of it," she said. "But I'm 53, and I like spending time with my husband."

Lift helps seniors make a ‘splash’

Posted: at 3:16 am

Bossier Council on Aging uses new lift to help with summer water aerobics class

Senior citizens are making a big splash this summer. The Bossier Council on Aging is offering local seniors a full-body, low-impact water aerobics class three days a week at the Ft. Smith public swimming pool. Jackie Conner of Bossier City has been an instructor for 20 years now and said her 45 minute class reaches everything from the eyes to the tips of the toes.

I do this for the benefit of the seniors and for those who may have health problems, Conner said. It's something that will move every part of your body.

Donald Oakley of Bossier City is a newcomer to Conners class this year. In his second summer with the BCOA, Oakley said he is enjoying time in the pool thanks to a new lift installed this year.

Oakley, who had his right leg amputated at the knee two years ago, is one of two seniors using a remote controlled automated handicap chair lift to get safely in and out of the pool.

According to Clay Bohanan, Director of the Department of Parks & Recreation, the new lift was installed this year to meet state and federal law.

The lift we had there originally was outdated and old, Bohanan said. We went ahead and installed a new lift there and at the other two public pools also.

Last summer, Oakley wondered if he would ever get the chance to get in the water.

Gee, I wish I could get in there, he recalled thinking as he passed by the pool.

Oakley said the new lift is a God-send.

GEORGE TOWN: TO commemorate George Town as the host city for the fifth Tourism Promotion Organisation forum (TPO), the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) will organise a mass aerobics session at the Esplanade on Jul 1.

Currently, over 1,000 people have already signed up with MPPP and the organisers are hoping for another 1,000 more to join in the free two-hour session which will begin at 7.30am.

MPPP recreation, tourism and international affairs department assistant director Fazillah Hussain said free T-shirts bearing the TPO logo will be given to participants.

"This would be a great time for everybody to get together and stay fit and celebrate Penang as the host for the upcoming TPO."

She added that paramotor experts will fly into Esplanade with the TPO, MPPP and state flags on the day as part of the grand celebrations.

The aerobics session will be led by Penang Physical Fitness Association vice-president Jeorge Subramaniam and Senam Seni Aerobik instructor Che Mansor Mat.

Those interested to join can come to the front of the City Hall building next to the Esplanade by 7am on the day or call the instructors at 016-411 2205 (Jeorge) or 012-432 3324 (Che Mansor).

George Town was selected earlier this year to host the TPO, beating many other cities in the region which had lobbied hard for the honour.

The TPO forum will see 200 people, including mayors, government delegates and industry players getting together to talk about the tourism industry at large.

'Yoga Tour' aims to set record

Posted: at 3:16 am

DENVER - Tyrone Beverly is a yoga expert. But he will be the first to tell you that yoga goes beyond fitness. He uses the practice to bring people together. "We really want to promote health and wellness socially, as well as physically," said Beverly, who operates the organization I'm Unique which focuses on fostering healthy lifestyles in all communities.

That is why he is planning on a hopefully large and diverse group of people practicing yoga in a museum. They will gather for the Illustrated Union Yoga Tour on Saturday, June 30 from 9 to 11 a.m. at The Wildlife Experience in Parker.

The event is open to the public, and Beverly welcomes people of all fitness and ability levels.

"We just want to open it to a wide group of people," he said, adding that the class will welcome people ranging from those who have never practiced yoga to advanced levels. Prenatal and kids classes will also be included. The event is open to people ages 8 and up.

To learn more about the Illustrated Union Yoga Tour, call 720-448-3300 or 303-358-9455. More information is also available on the organization's website: http://www.imuniqueunited.com.

Elaine Gavalas: Yoga May Help Breast Cancer Survivors

Posted: at 3:16 am

Standard breast cancer treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation can have severe side effects. During and after cancer treatments patients often experience persistent fatigue and sleep problems that affect quality of life. Many women may also suffer from depression, anxiety and weight loss.

There are few treatments available to truly relieve these problems. Traditional care usually includes antidepressants and sleep meds that can have adverse side effects. Studies show that supportive therapies such as stress reduction and exercise classes can benefit cancer patients.

Current research reports that yoga practice can improve quality of life in women undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Yoga may also help promote sleep, boost energy and improve mental health.

Yoga Improves Sleep and Fatigue

A 2010 randomized controlled study, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, found yoga improved sleep problems and fatigue. About 75 percent of the patients were breast cancer survivors. All of the cancer patients suffered from sleep disruption for 2 to 24 months.

Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center administered either a yoga program (yoga group) or standard care (control group) to 410 cancer survivors for four weeks. Sleep quality, fatigue and quality of life were assessed before and after the study.

The yoga group participated in 75-minute yoga sessions two times per week. The yoga program, called YOCAS (Yoga for Cancer Survivors), included gentle hatha yoga and restorative yoga poses, breathing and meditation. Certified yoga teachers trained in the YOCAS program conducted the classes.

The researchers found that the yoga participants had significantly reduced fatigue and improved sleep quality compared to the control group. Furthermore, the yoga group used less sleep medication while the control group increased sleep meds.

"This is great news for cancer survivors who deal with persistent and debilitating side effects from their cancer and its treatments long after their primary therapy ends," said lead investigator Karen Mustian, Ph.D., M.P.H., assistant professor at the university of Rochester Medical Center, in a news release. "There are few treatments for the sleep problems and fatigue survivors experience that work for very long, if at all."
