RG3 learns lesson with extortion

Posted: June 28, 2012 at 5:25 am

UpdatedJun 27, 2012 9:59 PM ET

The rookies, their lives filling with more responsibility by the minute, have listened carefully to the personal stories of success and failure from former NFL players.

The overriding messages: Control your destiny. Don't make our mistakes.

Adam ''Pacman'' Jones warned about the trappings of fame. Michael Vick spoke candidly about his dog-fighting conviction, 23 months locked in a federal prison and a second chance. Ex-NBA player Chris Herren detailed his descent into heroin's horror.

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has taken it all in during the rookie symposium, processing every word as if he was learning a new play - this one being the X's and O's of life.

''It would be easy to walk into those meetings and not listen and say, `I'm not that guy,''' Griffin said, ''because a lot of guys on that stage said the same thing when they heard another guy in the past come in and talk to them and say, `I'm not that guy, it will never happen to me.'

''You take what they say, apply it to your own life and if you think `I'm not that guy' at least you listened to them. You can only learn from your mistakes and others mistakes.''

Griffin is making the most of the NFL's four-day orientation program - now in its 15th year - for the league's newest players, some of whom may think they know what's ahead but in truth have little idea about what they'll face as professional athletes.

Griffin's learning quickly.

Positive Soccer Coaching: Enjoy the Game First

Posted: June 27, 2012 at 3:15 pm

Youth soccer coaches teach players many things. They teach them how to play the game. They improve their skills. They turn them into conditioned athletes. But sometimes the most important lesson gets lost. Sometimes youth soccer coaches take the fun out of the game. Coaches should teach players to enjoy the game first.

Build a Love for the Game

The first thing youth soccer coaches should do is create a love affair between young players and the game of soccer. Players who enjoy the game will live and breathe soccer. They will play soccer on their own and thirst for more. Taking the fun away will turn them off to soccer. Then they will never realize their potential.

Focus on the Journey

The poet Don Williams Jr. said that lessons come from the journey not the destination. This is so true for youth soccer. If your only goal as coach is to attain college scholarships, you are setting your players up for failure. Only two percent of high school athletes attain full or partial scholarships. Chances are that none of your players will get one. So there has to be something more. This is why it is your responsibility as coach to make this journey a fun and enjoyable one. Otherwise your players will look back at their soccer experiences with regret.

Soccer and Life Lessons

The Positive Coaching Alliance believes that youth soccer coaches have two primary directives. The first is to teach players how to win. The second is to teach life lessons. Creating an enjoyable experience is a big life lesson. A happy player gains confidence, learns teamwork, feels a sense of accomplishment and more. There are so many positive outcomes when players enjoy the game. Coaches should facilitate this by keeping the game enjoyable.

Your Legacy

When your players grow up and look back at their soccer experiences, how do you want to be remembered? Do you want to be seen as the coach who made soccer miserable for them or do you want to be the one who inspired them to love and continue soccer? Coaches affect the lives of young players. What do you want your legacy to be?

Making soccer enjoyable is a youth soccer coach's first priority. This should be your indicator for success. If you are not sure if you are meeting this goal, just count the smiles the next time your players are playing soccer.

Rockford Christian, Christian Life have coaching overhauls

Posted: at 3:15 pm

Ricardo Viera stepped into the job as athletic director at Rockford Christian in April and immediately rolled up his sleeves.

And within two months, he hired new coaches in boys basketball, football and volleyball.

Its been the same kind of year for Christian Life, which replaced about half of its varsity coaches less than a year after hiring new athletic director Rich Wood.

It has been challenging, but I think the changes are good, Wood said.

Its been an extremely busy few months for two of Rockfords smaller schools. Now, as they head into July, they are getting familiar with all the new names.

At Rockford Christian, the Royals started by hiring Viera to replace six-year athletic director Kirk Heidelberg. Days later, he was busy interviewing candidates for the head football coaching job, which was left vacant when the Royals did not renew one-year coach Glynn Jones contract after a 5-4 season.

RC chose Chad Carpenter, who played for Taylor University in Upland, Ind., has been an assistant at the University of Virginias College at Wise, Emory and Henry College, and Bristol Tennessee High School. He has experience coaching offensive and defensive lines, wide receivers and special teams.

Then Viera focused on a replacement for boys basketball coach Shane Bautch, who announced his resignation in May after three years. He chose Trent Emenecker.

Emenecker has been an educator for 17 years and coach for 11. His longest stint was with Catalina Foothills High School in Tucson, Ariz., where he racked up a 160-102 record. Locally, he served as Christian Lifes girls coach from 2008-09 and the Eagles boys coach in 2009-10.

RC also hired Tom Lynde as the new volleyball coach to complete the major hirings.

COACHING LIFE: Why should I have a mentor?

Posted: at 3:15 pm

Having a mentor is like watching a good trailer to the upcoming movie of your life and could increase the probability of its becoming a blockbuster. Nyahra.

In addition to having coaches all of my coaching life, I have always found it useful to have a mentor and to pay it forward by mentoring younger people.

Unlike coaches, mentors have free reign to give you advice, to literally tell you what to do, and since you dont pay them you are getting a gold mine of wisdom for free. The mentor/mentee relationship can sometimes mimic a paternal or maternal relationship and so some scolding may also be involved when mentees go off on a frolic of their own.

That being said, it is all done in the spirit of tough love.

Finding a mentor

I recommend that every young professional or career rookie seek a mentor. The operative word is seek. Your job is to examine your strengths and limitations, career vision, goals and values and try to find a mentor who is willing to help you along your career path. You should select someone whose character you emulate.

It is advantageous to find a mentor within your own career but someone within the industry or in a related field will be just a beneficial. In addition,

I like to recommend that young professionals seek out mentors who have also had several careers and business experiences, with varied interests and having travelled.

This is important since one of the enduring and critical attributes for success is being able to step outside your comfort zone and engage several types of people while coping with unfamiliar environments and circumstances.

Your next task is to get the mentor to say yes to you. There are three popular ways to achieve this.
