More than 200 volunteers make annual truck and tractor a success

Posted: at 2:15 am

TOMAH, Wis. -- Some of the biggest and best trucks and tractors are back in Tomah this weekend, to see just how much weight they can pull.

The annual Budweiser Dairyland Super National Truck and Tractor Pull is taking place all weekend at the Tomah Recreation Park.

More than 400 people from all over the country are putting their engines into high gear for the competition, and these are not your average "on the farm" trucks and tractors.

Some of these pullers spend hundreds of thousands of dollars, trying to make their engines as powerful as possible.

The event attracts thousands of spectators each year and organizers say it drives in about $15 million dollars.

"In the economy that we have today, these kinds of things are so important for the overall economy, especially of a community of this size, said Julie Zebro of the Monroe County Agricultural Society. So you need to be able to bring something to town so that they have a successful year and so that they stay in business."

Coordinating an event as big as this pull takes quite an effort. The only reason this event is even possible is because of the volunteers.

More than 200 volunteers spend their time working to make this event run smoothly and they say the experience they have during these four days is worth more than they could ever be paid.

I do it because I could not do it, said David Hall, a volunteer.

The truck and tractor pull is something Hall looks forward to every year.

Enjoy success, but don’t overwork, Jessica Sanchez

Posted: at 2:15 am

Jessica may be at a crossroads in her life even though she is experiencing immense professional success during this current two-year period. A choice between work commitments and personal desires may create conflict resulting in tension and possibly even bouts of poor health. She should continue to enjoy excellent success but must not overwork. An important friendship or relationship in her life will shortly come to an end.

Aries

You may find it hard to reconcile the differences between yourself and other peoples views on love. This wont stop you from getting excited about new romantic prospects, however. All sorts of unusual characters are likely to come your way in the coming weeks.

Taurus

Youll be happier to spend time with someone whos supportive of you at this time. They may not be quite as exciting or progressive as some of the other people around you, but youll need solid anchoring for a day or two to point you in the right direction and this person may just help.

Gemini

Some of lifes spurts of excitement now may not be long-lasting, so savor every moment. Work commitments cause you to miss opportunities, but look at this as a positive opening for you to explore other avenues of your life independently.

Cancer

Friends you feel have passed over you reconnect by taking the first step. If youve been isolated or lonely, its best to be out and about rather than staying home. Pick up the phone and call a few friends to create a social situation for yourself rather than living in a bubble.

Anya Kamenetz on Who Can Learn Online, and How? – Video

Posted: at 2:14 am

22-06-2012 14:53 Much of the conversation around the new wave of online education startups has focused on what they mean for the incumbent institutions, from for-profit online universities to the traditional Ivy League. But what about what they mean for learners? Who is currently succeeding in open learning contexts? What are the missing pieces of the ecosystem — from discovery, to peer support, to mentoring, to assessment — that will allow the most severely underserved learners to succeed in this new learning environment? Anya Kamenetz — senior writer at Fast Company Magazine, and author of two books and two ebooks about the future of education — discusses who online learning serves, and how. More info on this event here:
