CQ farmer wins Rabo award

Posted: June 27, 2012 at 3:11 pm

INCREASED personal development and self-investment has paid dividends for Central Queensland farmer Ben Jarvis winner of Rabobanks prestigious 2012 Farm Managers Program business development award.

Ben was awarded for his presentation of his personal development and business plan where he proved that by investing in himself as well as improving his business management practices his farming operation benefited.

Mr Jarvis said his experiences undertaking the program were life-changing.

The Program reinforced how important it is to set and maintain your goals on the personal side of things and the business side, Ben said.

By tweaking a few things, changing my approach towards certain things, I had really started to notice how the small things can make a difference.

I really applied myself to develop a business management plan aimed at reducing costs, increasing efficiencies and reducing debt and these actions generated some surprising outcomes.

The Rabobank Farm Managers Program is a business management course designed to develop the operational and strategic business skills of young farmers who represent the next generation of leading farm business owners. Now in its seventh year, the 2012 Program was held in Brisbane this month, attended by 35 participants from both islands of New Zealand and all states of Australia and representing a wide range of agricultural commodities.

Ben is one of the managers of Liberty Fields, located in Monto, Queensland. His family business runs a 500 sow piggery and farms 200 hectares of irrigated crops and 200 hectares dry land.

After meeting his wife Kylie, Ben moved back to Monto in 2004 and bought into the family business. Bens project is his account of the changes he has made to his farming and family life since returning from last years Farm Managers Program. He developed a personal development plan taking into account his mental and physical health, marriage and children, family and business and personal wealth.

I really found some self assurance and confidence in what were doing with our business knowing were on the right track, Ben said.

Louisiana education officials holding online meetings about new program letting public school students enroll in …

Posted: at 3:10 pm

The Louisiana Department of Education is holding online seminars at 10 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday about a newly created state program that allots money to students who want to take career-oriented classes, college level classes or online classes in subjects not offered at their home schools. Operating like a voucher system for individual classes, the program, called Course Choice, will start in 2013-14, primarily serving students in public schools with letter grades of C or lower but also adding options for students in A or B schools.

Course Choice aims to help some students catch up with their coursework when they've fallen behind and help others earn early college credits or graduate early from high school. The online meetings are meant to spread information to potential course providers, businesses, entrepreneurs, school administrators, counselors, teachers and parents.

Anyone interested in joining the seminar today can visit this Internet site, or call 888.621.7121 and enter the event number 701635. For Thursday's session, visit this site or call the same number and enter the event number 701635.

Education Department officials are planning to begin a campaign seeking feedback on the program from educators in local school districts in July. They also plan to begin seeking course providers in July.

Sexuality education to promote online safety

Posted: at 3:10 pm

By Gwendolyn Ng my paper Wednesday, Jun 27, 2012

Sexuality education in schools is being updated and, from next year, primary, secondary and junior college students will be taught how to navigate social-networking platforms safely in order to help them avoid sexual predators, the Ministry of Education (MOE) said yesterday.

"Teenagers today are quite different from those two or three decades ago, because of the kinds of influences that they are subjected to, (as well as) the accessibility of information," said Ms Grace Ng, MOE's Guidance Branch deputy director.

The impact of social media should not be underestimated, said Ms Ng at a press conference on the upcoming "refreshed" sexuality education programme for students from primary to junior college levels.

For instance, students will be taught about the boundaries when it comes to engaging in relationships on social-networking sites.

This will be done by engaging students in discussions, using case studies garnered from newspapers or fictional scenarios.

The new curriculum will be rolled out in stages from next year, starting with upper primary and lower secondary students. The new programmes will be available to all levels, including junior college students, by 2014.

Following feedback from students, curriculum content on skills in handling relationships with a person of the opposite sex will also be beefed up.

There will be a core of at least 10 specially selected teachers in each school to teach sexuality education. These teachers must be comfortable teaching the subject and be able to build rapport with students.

They should also practise mainstream values, as described by MOE, said Ms Ng.

Students earn credit, learn greater lesson in water aerobics class

Gabriela Chaidez laughs as she backs into Kayla Smith while exercising in the water at the YMCA. Students got to mix with several older women in the regular YMCA class, some who have been in the class since before the girls were born.

A swirl of arms and bobbing shoulders keeps the waves moving in the Knowles YMCA swimming pool as rock n roll oldies keep time for water aerobics.

The constant motion and low-impact workout have been a benefit to not only mature women in the YMCA class but also, during the past four weeks, for 10 young women from Jefferson City High Schools summer school.

The first-year class of nutrition and wellness has highlighted the importance of low-sugar diets and the value of regular exercise.
