A success story that keeps on giving

Posted: at 3:13 pm

The woman did not smile. She was unemployed, had an ill infant grandson and, having gained more than 100 pounds, could not get into her clothes.

Not even Pamela Taylor could get her to smile and Taylor, with her warm approach and empathetic tone can get practically anyone to smile.

Then Taylor realized there was more. The woman was missing some teeth and was reluctant to show it.

When I came I was a mess really, truly a mess, says the woman, Cynthia Gomez.

That was six years ago. Today, Gomez is among more than 5,500 clients helped by Taylor and the nonprofit Dress for Success San Antonio, which guides disadvantaged women in becoming self-sufficient.

What Taylor and her daughter started 10 years ago with little more than mildewed boxes full of women's professional clothing and an un-air-conditioned room at Travis Park United Methodist Church downtown has blossomed into a brightly lit center in the Wonderland of the Americas mall where women can get donated business suits so they can make a good impression on job interviews.

But beyond that, they find help in rsum writing, job hunting and interviewing. They have access to an emergency food pantry and even to outside help, such as dental care. Gomez now proudly flashes her toothy grin.

She's also off food stamps and out of subsidized housing and has won an outstanding-performance award at Xerox Corp. subsidiary Dahill, where she works in accounts receivable. She recently received a promotion and a raise.

The 52-year-old Gomez says she emerged from the worst time in her life by putting her trust in Taylor.

To hear (Taylor's) story just gives you inspiration, Gomez says. She cares about me. I care about her. She's there to help you.

Stuart Mathieson: Manchester United will be the beneficiaries of Danny Welbeck’s Euro 2012 success

Posted: at 3:13 pm

When Uniteds Euro 2012 England contingent kick back on the beaches and reflect, only Danny Welbeck will look back on his adventure with any real sense of satisfaction.

That personal contentment will, of course, be tempered by the fact that his first Three Lions tournament ended early.

But it shouldnt detract from positives the Mancunian striker has added to his CV.

His Old Trafford colleagues wont look back with the same pride.

Wayne Rooney should be kicking himself as hard now as he booted Montenegros Miodrag Dzudovic last October.

That act of stupidity resulted in his two-match ban and meant the Reds hitman not only missed the start of the tournament, but couldnt hit the ground running when he did return, as shown by his sluggish performance in the quarter-final against Italy.

Roo did spark briefly with his headed winner against Ukraine but it didnt herald form that saw the 26-year-old take an international finals by the scruff of the neck like he did as a teenager at Euro 2004.

Ashley Young went to Poland and Ukraine backed by five goals from his previous seven caps stats that promised an influential contribution from the winger.

However, slamming his penalty against the crossbar in the shoot-out against Italy merely topped off a miserable Euros for him.

Meanwhile, defender Phil Jones came home without adding to his cap haul.

Skoda Success At Auto Express 2012

Posted: at 3:13 pm

(Wednesday 27 June 2012)

Skoda emerged from last night's Auto Express awards ceremony with more honours than any other manufacturer. The Citigo was named Car of the Year for 2012, as well as best City Car, while the Superb won the Family and Estate categories. Skoda also received the Driver Power award after finishing at the top of a reader satisfaction poll.

BMW won the Compact Family, Compact Executive and Executive categories with the 1-Series, 3-Series and 5-Series respectively, while four brands had double success: Ford with the C-MAX (Five-Seat MPV) and Hot hatch (Focus ST), Land Rover with the Discovery (Large SUV) and Range Rover Evoque (Compact SUV), Peugeot with the new 208 (Supermini) and RCZ (Coup) and Volkswagen with the Amarok (Pickup) and Golf Cabriolet (Convertible).

Other category wins went to the Ferrari 458 Italia (Performance), Mazda CX-5 (Crossover), Mercedes-Benz S-Class (Luxury) and SEAT Alhambra (Seven-Seat MPV).

The Vauxhall Ampera and Jaguar C-X16 concept were voted greenest and best-designed cars respectively. Two human beings were also honoured: HRH Prince Michael of Kent, who is of course quite highly honoured already, was given the Safety Award for his personal efforts to promote road safety over the past 25 years, and Nissan Executive Vice-President Andy Palmer was inducted into the Auto Express Hall of Fame.

Stuart Mathieson: Manchester United will benefit from Danny Welbeck’s Euro 2012 success

Cypress Semiconductor: Could Benefit from "Surface" Tablet Success

Posted: at 3:13 pm

By John Mylant - June 27, 2012 | Tickers: CY, MSFT, RMTR | 0 Comments

John is a member of The Motley Fool Blog Network -- entries represent the personal opinions of our bloggers and are not formally edited.

For most of the past year, Cypress Semiconductor (NASDAQ: CY)has sailed into headwind after headwind. There is a good possibility, however, that the winds may be changing.

We can look at the stock on a chart and see how it peaked in mid February. From there it started a bearish trend to where it trades today at $12.51.

What I find interesting is that an analyst, Sterne Agee, reiterated that it believes the stock is a buy and has a price target of $19. A 52% price increase! Why so bullish on the company?

One move that Cypress has continually pressed is its bid to buy competitorRamtron (NASDAQ: RMTR). So far though, it has resisted Cypress attempts to purchase the company. Ramtron International Corp turned down rival Cypress original offer of about $87.6 million, but it was refused in order to explore other options. What was the reason for the brush off? It did not believe that Cypress offer reflected the intrinsic value of the company, and the deal would not be good for its own stockholders. Then, Cypress made a second bid. Now it is looking at buying outstanding shares for about $2.68 per share in cash, which is close to 47% above current value.

But this would be a great merger for Cypress. It would be a shot in the arm for its Memory Product Division, which generates about 42% of the companys total revenue through SRAM Memory. Ramtron has what is called ferroelectric RAM (F-RAM), a good complement to Cypress SRAM memory.

This is one strong positioning move the company is making for the future, but I believe the real reason Sterne Agee is so bullish on the stock is because of its relationship with Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and the launching of the Surface tablet. Agee asserts: "For CY, the 11-15" Touch surface is a $4-$6 per unit opportunity versus $2 (or under) in handsets." This makes the Surface much more profitable for the company and its touch sensor control chips.

If it is embraced by consumers, the 10.6 screen, which is larger than the AppleiPad screen, and the touch sensitive key pad will be real selling points. Cypress has a relationship with Windows 8 and it could be the beginning of a tablet-cover market that also includes Cypress technology.

It will not be the only company to benefit. Initially there will be two versions of the Surface; one will use an Intelchip and the other will use amicroprocessor made by ARM.This is where it will compete with the iPad.

2012 Farm Managers Program winner announced

Posted: at 3:11 pm

Media Release June 27, 2012 1

2012 Farm Managers Program winner announced the road forward

Increased personal development and self-investment has paid dividends for Australian farmer Ben Jarvis winner of Rabobanks prestigious 2012 Farm Managers Program business development award.

Ben was awarded for his presentation of his personal development and business plan where he proved that by investing in himself as well as improving his business management practices his farming operation benefited.

Mr Jarvis said his experiences undertaking the program were life-changing.

The Program reinforced how important it is to set and maintain your goals on the personal side of things and the business side, Ben said.

By tweaking a few things, changing my approach towards certain things, I had really started to notice how the small things can make a difference.

I really applied myself to develop a business management plan aimed at reducing costs, increasing efficiencies and reducing debt and these actions generated some surprising outcomes.

The Rabobank Farm Managers Program is a business management course designed to develop the operational and strategic business skills of young farmers who represent the next generation of leading farm business owners. Now in its seventh year, the 2012 Program was held in Brisbane this month, attended by 35 participants from both islands of New Zealand and all states of Australia and representing a wide range of agricultural commodities.

Ben is one of the managers of Liberty Fields, located in Monto, Queensland in north-eastern Australia. His family business runs a 500 sow piggery and farms 200 hectares of irrigated crops and 200 hectares dry land.
