Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation Awards 69 Nonprofit Organizations Quality of Life Grants

SHORT HILLS, N.J., June 29, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation announced it has awarded almost $425,000 in Quality of Life Grants to 69 nonprofit organizations in the United States. Twice yearly, the Quality of Life Grants Program rewards nonprofit organizations that mirror the Reeve Foundation's mission to enable individuals living with paralysis to live full and healthy lives. Since the Quality of Life Grants Program's inception, 2,055 grants totaling over $15.6 million have been awarded.
The Painted Turtle Gang Camp of Santa Monica, California received a $7,500 grant for the Spina Bifida and Paraplegia Family Weekend, which brings whole families together to experience empowering recreational activities, learn new methods of self-care from medical professionals, and foster peer support.
Another camp being supported by a Reeve Foundation Quality of Life Grant is Lions Camp Tatiyee in Little Rock, Arkansas. This $4,000 grant will help to support camperships for children living with spinal cord injuries at a well-established, accessible camp. Campers that would not otherwise be able to attend camp to enjoy new experiences, meet new friends, increase their independence and self-esteem will be able to benefit from all that camp offers.
Gottsche Rehabilitation and Wellness Center based in Thermopolis, Wyoming was awarded a grant of $19,751 to support a project that will provide functional electrical stimulation motorized ergometry rehabilitation to its patients at the rural Cody, Wyoming center. No other facilities in this region currently offer this type of therapy.
One of three organizations in Florida that received a Quality of Life Grant was awarded to Stand Among Friends, located in Boca Raton. The $5,500 grant will support a career-focused Assistive Technology Initiative for college students and adults living with disabilities. The program uses Assistive Technology as a key component of a larger professional placement program called Careerability, which includes vocational evaluation, pre-placement training, internships, on-the-job training, placement, job coaching and long term success mentoring.
"The Reeve Foundation believes that each of the nearly six million Americans living with paralysis deserves access to the best programs and services available. The Quality of Life Grants Program supports other nonprofit organizations that not only believe in that same independence, but achieve great success in carrying out their programs' missions," said Peter T. Wilderotter, president and CEO of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. "We are honored to recognize these organizations which empower those affected by paralysis."
The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation Quality of Life grants program was conceived by the late Dana Reeve to address the myriad needs of children and adults with paralysis and other mobility impairments and their families. Grants support critical life-enhancing and life-changing initiatives that improve physical and emotional health and increase independence. Funded projects offer a diversity of services and approaches: improving access; providing education and job training; sponsoring organized sporting activities; and much more. Quality of Life grants are funded through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Award #1U59DD000838).

Russia inflict another loss on GB
Posted: at 9:19 pm
By Chris Mitchell BBC Sport in Houston
Great Britain were beaten by Russia 76-54 in their fourth warm-up game at their training camp in Texas, their fourth defeat in a row.
Centre Joel Freeland put in another good personal performance, scoring a game-high 18 points, grabbing five rebounds and four assists.
Britain forward Dan Clark added 10 points in Houston.
"We had a great first half. I think we just lost our legs in the second half," Freeland told BBC Sport.
"I think that's down to a bit of fatigue, early days in the training camp. I think, going on, we're going to get a lot better.''
Russia are former European champions and ranked 11th in the world but it was GB who started start strongly, with Freeland and Clark combining for 13 points as they took a three-point lead.
The first half was very tough and I think it shows the potential of the Great Britain team. They can play basketball, good quality basketball
Russia, playing all their stars, had a poor first half. Former NBA star Andrei Kirilenko's shooting was off target as he threw up two airballs, and the rest of his side struggled to find their rhythm.
GB's shooting was also poor but, after the second quarter which Russia won 12-11, GB still led by two points - 28-26.

Fairfax Media, Rinehart board stoush gets personal
Posted: at 9:19 pm
THE gloves have come off in the battle for control of Fairfax Media with major shareholder Gina Rinehart and the company exchanging increasingly personal salvos about their differences, and the future of the company.
In a flurry of heated exchanges yesterday afternoon, prompted by this week's Fairfax rejection of Mrs Rinehart's board tilt, the Perth-based mining magnate called on chairman Roger Corbett to agree to a ''performance milestone'' of returning the company's share price to 87 and reversing ''the five-year decline in paid circulation and revenue''. In a letter to Mr Corbett, she said he should resign if he failed to achieve the goals by November.
But Fairfax rejected the ultimatum. Instead, it called on her to launch a takeover for the company.

''If Mrs Rinehart wants control of Fairfax Media she must make a bid. Mrs Rinehart's letter today has once and for all unmasked her motives for her continual attacks on the company and its board,'' adding that the company's readers would abandon the group's mastheads ''if Mrs Rinehart succeeds in this personal crusade''.
Later in the evening, one of Mrs Rinehart key executives, John Klepec, took issue with the Fairfax response, saying: ''Mrs Rinehart has repeatedly advised that she would not use the publications to promote her private interests only. It is hence incorrect for Fairfax to endeavour to allege that this has been a 'personal crusade'."
Mrs Rinehart had ''never sought control of Fairfax,'' he added.
Earlier, Mrs Rinehart dismissed the board's assertion that editorial independence was the main sticking point. ''Where we have differed most profoundly is not over the charter of editorial independence, contrary to much Fairfax reporting, but over how to save a business that is reportedly in danger of dying.''
But the company - owner of this newspaper - disagreed: ''Contrary to Mrs Rinehart's repeated assertions that this isn't about editorial control - it is. It is also about her obtaining control of the company and not paying a premium.''
Mrs Rinehart said the performance of Fairfax over the past five years had been ''distressing for shareholders''.

The Only Definition of Success That Matters
Posted: at 9:19 pm
To a small business owner, to an employee--to anyone--there is only one way to determine success.
Flickr/Pierre-Yves Sanchis
That's right. One. No kaleidoscope, no cornucopia, no "we're all snowflakes," no we're all individuals.
One.
Sure, success in business and in life means different things to different people. (Very different things in some instances; check out some of the comments on this article about the beliefs of remarkably successful people.)
And success should mean different things. Whether or not you are successful depends on how you define success, and on the tradeoffs you are willing to not just accept but embrace as you pursue that definition of success. We can have a lot but we can't have everything.
I get that, but I also get this. To a small business owner, to an employee--to anyone--there is only one way to determine success. The answer lies in answering one question: How happy am I?
That's it. How successful you are is based solely on the answer to that question.
How happy are you?
