Lobster mini-season 2012: Success was hit and miss, safety was priority

Posted: at 8:15 am

A catch of lobster swims Wednesday in the live well aboard Little Adam fishing charters with Capt. Richard Hunt. Lobster divers enjoyed two days of good diving conditions even if the lobster pickings were a bit slim.

Spiny lobster mini-season 2012 was calm, safe and by most accounts, a thoroughly enjoyed sportsman's holiday.

As for the personal take of highly prized crustaceans, Treasure Coast reports indicate that it was "so-so" for some and "great" for others.

The annual two-day dash by recreational divers in Florida waters came to a close Thursday with no fatalities for the first time since 2003.

Beginning Aug. 6, recreational divers and commercial fishers can begin the regular season for lobster that continues until March 31, 2013. The daily bag limit statewide for recreational divers will be six lobsters per person instead of the 12 it was during the sport season.

Brandon Dolan of Kirk's Dive and Surf in Port St. Lucie said the feedback from his customers was that diving for lobsters seemed to be a little better off Fort Pierce and St. Lucie inlets in 50 to 70 feet of water than it was closer to shore.

"It sounded like visibility was minimal and the water was colder closer to the beach in Fort Pierce and that many divers did not find their limits," Dolan said. "We had several customers come in who did get their limits, including one boat with four divers that had 48 including three larger than 10 pounds, and several grouper, too."

Tim Russell of Dive Odyssea in Fort Pierce was part of a group that limited out easily early Wednesday morning.

Advanced Jailbase.com Removal Program a Huge Success

Posted: at 8:15 am

DENVER, Colo., July 26, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- InternetReputation.com is proud to announce that their Jailbase.com Removal Program is a successful solution for removing embarrassing, potentially damaging information from search engines. InternetReputation.com reputation management experts have spent over a year developing their Jailbase Removal Program and can now offer a quick, cost-effective solution for having these listings removed from the public eye in a matter of days.

What is Jailbase.com?

Jailbase.com is an online arrest data registry. By taking advantage of the Freedom of Information Act, Jailbase.com solicits arrest data from many different states and posts them online for the general public. Search engines like Google and Bing index these pages, and any person's records can be easily found by just searching for their name.

Normally, Jailbase.com removes these listings automatically after six months, and anyone can archive these records and keep them indefinitely. This is far too risky and potentially damaging for anyone that relies on their good reputation in their personal or professional life. InternetReputation.com's Jailbase Removal Program works in a matter of days, not months, to remove records from search engines and keep them out of the public eye.

Howthe program works

similar services across the internet charge potential customers for a consultation, butInternetReputation.com offers free consultation servicefor anyone that is concerned about a Jailbase.com listing. COACHING LIFE: The eight habits

Posted: at 8:14 am

Last week the personal development world lost one of its most influential voices, Dr Stephen Covey.

Famous for his seminal work, The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People, Dr Coveys lasting legacy to organizations the world over will among others be a principle-based practical framework for the practice of personal and professional effectiveness that will endure for centuries to come.

It would seem that he lived what he preached. I was fortunate enough not only to have met Dr Covey but to have shared the stage with him. It was quite an honour as a young inspirational speaker at the beginning of my speaking career.

I remember the greeting. You know how they say that the eyes are the windows to the soul? Well, in the few minutes it took to exchange pleasantries, Dr Covey looked directly into my eyes with such presence that it made him very transparent to me.

It was a remarkable couple of minutes. I cannot honestly say that I have ever experienced such authenticity in another persons eyes. I felt as if I could see his entire being, who he was and what he exemplified. It was a privilege to sense that brand of humanity in another human being.

After our meet-and-greet, it was time for me to take the stage. I spoke on my signature topic, Passion. When Dr Covey took the stage, he took us on a journey of interwoven stories filled with characters and colours that illustrated the Seven Habits.

Then he came to the eighth habit not a tack-on, he was careful to add, but a whole new level of human capability he referred to as greatness. And just how do we find and experience greatness? Through our voice; our authentic voice, of which passion is a part.

I must admit that I had made an obligatory scan of the eighth habit only a few hours before the speech, having purchased the book to get the Seven Habits CD. Yes, I am one of those people. So I was just beside myself to discover in my perusal that the guru of the personal development industry believed, like I did, that adopting and expressing your authentic expression is not only a capstone to excellence but is the key to truly expressing our greatness on this planet and that passion was a key ingredient.

We experienced his grace and generosity as he kept alluding in agreement to statements I had made in my little talk on how to find your passion. As we listened to him, we watched how he worked many of the habits from his own framework into his delivery. He gave examples from his own life that demonstrated his personal practice of all the habits.

As he spoke on finding our authentic voice, he said that finding our passion was critical to expressing ourselves authentically and that it had lots of validity in the workplace, especially among leaders seeking to influence. It is difficult to influence others to identify their gifts and greatness and bring their authentic voice to the world if you have not yet found your own.

University offers new Online Teaching Concentration

Posted: at 8:12 am

Beginning this fall, Waynesburg University will offer an Online Teaching Concentration through its Master of Education (M.Ed.) Program.

The University has developed strategic curriculum to facilitate the development of the technology skills necessary for online teachers in order to better prepare students for teaching careers in the changing landscape of K-12 schools and higher education.

Todays teacher must be proficient in using the current tools of technology in order to engage students, whether they teach in an online format, hybrid or brick and mortar school, said Dr. Lawrence Kushner, Director of Graduate Programs in Education and Assistant Professor in the M.Ed. Program.

Research indicates phenomenal growth in student enrollment in both online schools and individual online courses. According to the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL), there were an estimated 1,816,400 enrollments in distance-education courses in K-12 school districts in 2009 and 2010, almost all of which were online courses. This estimate does not include students enrolled in most full-time online schools, which included approximately 200,000 students in 2009 and 2010 and 250,000 students in 2010 and 2011. A decade ago, it was estimated that there were between 40,000 and 50,000 enrollments in K-12 online education.

The Concentration in Online Teaching can be earned as a five course stand-alone or as part of Waynesburgs general M.Ed. Program as well as the M.Ed. in Instructional Technology Program. Students wishing to pursue the 30-credit (ten courses) Master of Education can continue by completing five additional core courses. Seven additional courses are needed for the 36 credit (twelve courses) Master of Education in Instructional Technology and the Master of Education in Instructional Technology with a Specialist Certificate.

Curriculum designed for this program includes proven teaching methods for engaging students, the use of current technology and the introduction of new teaching practices, such as flipping the classroom.

The 15-credit concentration requires the completion of five specialized courses that will effectively prepare students for related and applicable careers. These courses include Contemporary Issues in Technology; Integrating Technology with Teaching and Learning; Introduction to Educational Technologies; Introduction to Multimedia; and Online Course Design and Instructional Strategies.

Students interested in the Online Teaching Concentration will be able to begin courses at Waynesburg Universitys Southpointe, Seven Fields or Monroeville campuses during the Fall I Session offered Aug. 27 through Oct. 20. The M.Ed. Program can be completed in two years or less. Courses are offered in eight-week accelerated sessions with year-round admission dates and meet one night per week, Monday through Thursday, from 6 to 10 p.m.

The purpose of the 30-credit M.Ed. Program is to afford students the opportunity to earn graduate credits toward their Instructional II Certification. Students have the ability to choose a concentration from three options that will prepare them to become master teachers and school leaders. In addition to the Online Teaching Concentration, concentrations in Curriculum and Instructional Leadership and Autism Spectrum Disorders are available.

The 19-year-old will travel to Adelaide today to contest the FISAF national championships in the hope of securing a place on the Australian team for the world championships in the Netherlands.

Yoga may help stroke survivors improve balance

Posted: at 1:20 am

ScienceDaily (July 26, 2012) Group yoga can improve balance in stroke survivors who no longer receive rehabilitative care, according to new research in the American Heart Association journal Stroke.

In a small pilot study, researchers tested the potential benefits of yoga among chronic stroke survivors -- those whose stroke occurred more than six months earlier.

"For people with chronic stroke, something like yoga in a group environment is cost effective and appears to improve motor function and balance," said Arlene Schmid, Ph.D., O.T.R., lead researcher and a rehabilitation research scientist at Roudebush Veterans Administration-Medical Center and Indiana University, Department of Occupational Therapy in Indianapolis, Ind.

The study's 47 participants, about three-quarters of them male veterans, were divided into three groups: twice-weekly group yoga for eight weeks; a "yoga-plus" group, which met twice weekly and had a relaxation recording to use at least three times a week; and a usual medical care group that did no rehabilitation.

The yoga classes, taught by a registered yoga therapist, included modified yoga postures, relaxation, and meditation. Classes grew more challenging each week.

Compared with patients in the usual-care group, those who completed yoga or yoga-plus significantly improved their balance.

Balance problems frequently last long after a person suffers a stroke, and are related to greater disability and a higher risk of falls, researchers said.

Furthermore, survivors in the yoga groups had improved scores for independence and quality of life and were less afraid of falling.

"For chronic stroke patients, even if they remain disabled, natural recovery and acute rehabilitation therapy typically ends after six months, or maybe a year," said Schmid, who is also an assistant professor of occupational therapy at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis and an investigator at the Regenstrief Institute.

Improvements after the six-month window can take longer to occur, she said, "but we know for a fact that the brain still can change. The problem is the healthcare system is not necessarily willing to pay for that change. The study demonstrated that with some assistance, even chronic stroke patients with significant paralysis on one side can manage to do modified yoga poses."
