University offers new Online Teaching Concentration

Posted: at 8:12 am

Beginning this fall, Waynesburg University will offer an Online Teaching Concentration through its Master of Education (M.Ed.) Program.

The University has developed strategic curriculum to facilitate the development of the technology skills necessary for online teachers in order to better prepare students for teaching careers in the changing landscape of K-12 schools and higher education.

Todays teacher must be proficient in using the current tools of technology in order to engage students, whether they teach in an online format, hybrid or brick and mortar school, said Dr. Lawrence Kushner, Director of Graduate Programs in Education and Assistant Professor in the M.Ed. Program.

Research indicates phenomenal growth in student enrollment in both online schools and individual online courses. According to the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL), there were an estimated 1,816,400 enrollments in distance-education courses in K-12 school districts in 2009 and 2010, almost all of which were online courses. This estimate does not include students enrolled in most full-time online schools, which included approximately 200,000 students in 2009 and 2010 and 250,000 students in 2010 and 2011. A decade ago, it was estimated that there were between 40,000 and 50,000 enrollments in K-12 online education.

The Concentration in Online Teaching can be earned as a five course stand-alone or as part of Waynesburgs general M.Ed. Program as well as the M.Ed. in Instructional Technology Program. Students wishing to pursue the 30-credit (ten courses) Master of Education can continue by completing five additional core courses. Seven additional courses are needed for the 36 credit (twelve courses) Master of Education in Instructional Technology and the Master of Education in Instructional Technology with a Specialist Certificate.

Curriculum designed for this program includes proven teaching methods for engaging students, the use of current technology and the introduction of new teaching practices, such as flipping the classroom.

The 15-credit concentration requires the completion of five specialized courses that will effectively prepare students for related and applicable careers. These courses include Contemporary Issues in Technology; Integrating Technology with Teaching and Learning; Introduction to Educational Technologies; Introduction to Multimedia; and Online Course Design and Instructional Strategies.

Students interested in the Online Teaching Concentration will be able to begin courses at Waynesburg Universitys Southpointe, Seven Fields or Monroeville campuses during the Fall I Session offered Aug. 27 through Oct. 20. The M.Ed. Program can be completed in two years or less. Courses are offered in eight-week accelerated sessions with year-round admission dates and meet one night per week, Monday through Thursday, from 6 to 10 p.m.

The purpose of the 30-credit M.Ed. Program is to afford students the opportunity to earn graduate credits toward their Instructional II Certification. Students have the ability to choose a concentration from three options that will prepare them to become master teachers and school leaders. In addition to the Online Teaching Concentration, concentrations in Curriculum and Instructional Leadership and Autism Spectrum Disorders are available.

Yoga may help stroke survivors improve balance

Posted: at 1:20 am

ScienceDaily (July 26, 2012) Group yoga can improve balance in stroke survivors who no longer receive rehabilitative care, according to new research in the American Heart Association journal Stroke.

In a small pilot study, researchers tested the potential benefits of yoga among chronic stroke survivors -- those whose stroke occurred more than six months earlier.

"For people with chronic stroke, something like yoga in a group environment is cost effective and appears to improve motor function and balance," said Arlene Schmid, Ph.D., O.T.R., lead researcher and a rehabilitation research scientist at Roudebush Veterans Administration-Medical Center and Indiana University, Department of Occupational Therapy in Indianapolis, Ind.

The study's 47 participants, about three-quarters of them male veterans, were divided into three groups: twice-weekly group yoga for eight weeks; a "yoga-plus" group, which met twice weekly and had a relaxation recording to use at least three times a week; and a usual medical care group that did no rehabilitation.

The yoga classes, taught by a registered yoga therapist, included modified yoga postures, relaxation, and meditation. Classes grew more challenging each week.

Compared with patients in the usual-care group, those who completed yoga or yoga-plus significantly improved their balance.

Balance problems frequently last long after a person suffers a stroke, and are related to greater disability and a higher risk of falls, researchers said.

Furthermore, survivors in the yoga groups had improved scores for independence and quality of life and were less afraid of falling.

"For chronic stroke patients, even if they remain disabled, natural recovery and acute rehabilitation therapy typically ends after six months, or maybe a year," said Schmid, who is also an assistant professor of occupational therapy at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis and an investigator at the Regenstrief Institute.

Improvements after the six-month window can take longer to occur, she said, "but we know for a fact that the brain still can change. The problem is the healthcare system is not necessarily willing to pay for that change. The study demonstrated that with some assistance, even chronic stroke patients with significant paralysis on one side can manage to do modified yoga poses."

Yoga Improves Balance After Stroke

Posted: at 1:20 am

Study Shows Yoga Also Reduces Fear of Falling

July 26, 2012 -- Starting yoga even long after a stroke may improve the balance of stroke survivors, a study shows.

"It's an exciting thing," says study researcher Arlene Schmid, PhD. "People can improve their balance years after a stroke. They can change their brain and change their body. They are not stuck with what they have."

The study is published in the journal Stroke.

Schmid is a rehabilitation research scientist at Roudebush Veterans Administration-Medical Center and Indiana University in Indianapolis. For the study, her team recruited 47 stroke survivors who'd had strokes more than six months ago. Seventy-five percent of them were male veterans, including veterans of World War II.

They were divided into two groups. Ten received no therapy. The other 37 got a specialized version of yoga developed by a yoga therapist and the research team.

At first, many of the veterans scoffed at the therapy.

"'Yoga is for girls, yoga is for hippies,'" Schmid recalls them telling her. "A stereotypical male veteran's response."

After a couple of sessions, though, and with encouragement from their wives, the veterans came to appreciate yoga and the impact it had on their disabilities.

"It was a hard sell, but by the end they wanted more," Schmid says.

4-H and UnitedHealthcare Launch “Eat4-Health” Campaign in 10 States Aimed at Empowering Youth to Promote Healthy Living

Posted: at 8:19 pm

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

National 4-H Council and UnitedHealthcare are expanding their partnership to promote healthy living by launching a new campaign designed to empower youth to help tackle the nations obesity epidemic.

The UnitedHealthcare 4-H Eat4-Health campaign begins this summer in 10 states, activating thousands of 4-H youth ambassadors to make healthy choices for themselves and encourage friends, families and people in their communities to make positive changes through training, creative programs and educational events.

Eat4-Health builds on UnitedHealthcares successful partnership with 4-H that began last year in Florida, Mississippi and Texas. The campaign will expand to a total of 10 states to include Arizona, Louisiana, Nebraska, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Tennessee. Each state will receive a $30,000 grant funded by UnitedHealthcare to support healthy-living programs, events and other activities administered by 4-H that encourage young people and their families to eat more nutritious foods and exercise regularly.

The program was officially launched today with more than 400 4-H youth and community leaders at the Tennessee State 4-H Round-Up and All Star Conference. They joined UnitedHealthcares mascot Dr. Health E. Hound in a discussion about the importance of healthy living and participated in a group exercise activity.

4-H is pleased to expand its partnership with UnitedHealthcare and launch this new campaign to empower youth to help improve the health of their peers, their families and their communities, said Donald T. Floyd Jr., president and CEO of National 4-H Council. 4-H youth ambassadors are prepared to work with UnitedHealthcare to make a positive impact on the health and wellness of our nations future leaders.

The Eat4-Health program is making a positive difference in the lives of so many families in communities that are hardest hit by the childhood obesity epidemic, said Russell C. Petrella, Ph.D., president of UnitedHealthcare Community & State, a UnitedHealth Group (UNH) company. UnitedHealthcare and 4-H look forward to expanding the program in more states and harnessing the energy and excitement of 4-H youth to promote healthy living.

Participating 4-H state programs receiving a grant will develop action plans that provide innovative, hands-on learning approaches that target specific community needs in their state. Many of these activities will support healthy living programs led by 4-H that encourage youth and community participation through events such as health fairs, cooking demonstrations, after-school programs, workshops and educational forums, among others. UnitedHealthcare employees will team up with 4-H at many of these events, assisting with planning and executing projects that lead to positive, sustainable change at the community and individual level.

As part of the Eat4-Health campaign, each state will organize and host a Youth Summit/Conference to train 4-H youth ambassadors to implement programs and reach goals in each state. The summits will provide the venue where participants will learn more about nutrition, health and fitness, obtain information on promoting health within their communities, and gain new tools for participating in multi-session educational trainings and one-time community activities and events.

This teen leadership experience will also serve as a launch to a Teen Ambassadors pledge and prepare 4-Hers to use their increased healthy-living knowledge and skills to make an impact in their own communities.

EmTech Preview: David Icke of MC10 on the Revolution in Fitness and Health Tools

Posted: at 8:19 pm

David Icke, CEO of MC10, wants you to feel like an Olympian. The company wants to provide users with sophisticated knowledge to fuel individual fitness and improve health, all through wearable electronics.

During a TEDMED talk this past spring, Icke lamented that electronics for fitness and medicine havent experienced the rapid innovation seen in computing and communications. Icke envisions unobtrusive technology that is worn on, and even in, our bodies. What if electronics conformed to us, instead of us conforming to them? ... Reshaping electronics will change medicine and advance [our] quality of life, he says.

MC10 has announced a Sports Advisory Board of respected professional athletes to help shape the next generation of athletic performance monitoring devices. (Read more on this group here.) MC10s groundbreaking technology will provide athletes of all stripes with critical performance information that will inform the way we all train and compete, said Grant Hill of the NBAs LA Clippers.

Ickes presentation from TEDMED can be seen here:

The biggest opportunity offered by wearable electronics, he claims, is to unlock the mysteries of human biology so that we understand what makes us sick, and what expands our capacities. Imagine what we dont know today that we will learn from a closer look at our systems, which is possible when sensing and computing electronics conform to us, he says.

Technology Review wrote about the self-quantification movement in its July/August cover story, The Measured Life, by Emily Singer.

David Icke is speaking at Technology Reviews annual EmTech MIT conference this October.

The conference will further explore the next wave of personal quantification: genomics. A forthcoming post will preview speakers who will share new ways that gene sequencing technologies are enabling personal genomics to redefine medicine.

Register today for EmTech 2012, coming up October 2425 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
