College Students Seeking an Academic Edge This Semester Can Hire an Affordable, Personal Digital Tutor to Enhance …

Posted: at 7:17 am

NEW YORK, Aug. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Beginning this semester, McGraw-Hill Higher Education will make its industry-leading personal digital tutor McGraw-Hill LearnSmart available for students to purchase directly. Traditionally, McGraw-Hill has marketed LearnSmart, which is available in almost every subject area, to universities and professors for class-wide adoption, which it will continue to do. But now, students can access LearnSmart on their own a move the company made because of the solution's growing popularity and proven effectiveness among students.

Students using McGraw-Hill LearnSmart have been proven to move up a full letter grade by studying smarter, not longer. With LearnSmart, students use their out-of-class study time to answer questions that are related to what they're learning in their course. The fully digital system acts like a personal tutor, continuously assessing students' knowledge and skills and providing personalized content and recommendations that help them master basic course concepts and retain their knowledge over time. Because LearnSmart is conveniently accessible online and via mobile apps, the technology and devices that students use every day will power a personalized, study-on-the-go experience that will give them the information and focus they need to ensure success in their courses.

Widely available for more than 100 best-selling McGraw-Hill college textbooks and across more than 40 course areas, LearnSmart is great even for students on a budget, starting at $24.99 per semester. Parents wanting to ensure their children get the most of their education can rest assured that LearnSmart is a smart investment. In a study released last year, LearnSmart was shown to turn C students into B students, and B students into A students.

"I have had so much success using LearnSmart," said Tracy Chupp, an Anatomy & Physiology student at Ivy Tech Community College. "By using LearnSmart to study, I know exactly what I need to practice and how much I know about each topic."

Originally developed in 2007, McGraw-Hill LearnSmart uses a wealth of data to continuously analyze students' knowledge and skills and direct them to the exact material (in their e-book or print book) they need to study. LearnSmart also contains engaging gaming elements to push students to improve their performance by showing them how they rank relative to their peers. LearnSmart is perfect for today's multitasking students, whether they are over-achievers seeking an added edge, struggling students who need extra help to prepare for their exams, or students who are simply pressed for time. More than 950,000 students have answered nearly 700 million questions using LearnSmart which is good news for students, as LearnSmart gets smarter the more widely it is used.

"We have technology with the power to personalize the learning experience and give students an academic edge," said Brian Kibby, president, McGraw-Hill Higher Education. "We're making LearnSmart available directly to students and their parents who want to help them succeed so we can ensure that more students have the tools they need to empower themselves and get the most out of their college education. As a student in today's highly competitive and expensive college environment, why wouldn't you use a digital tutor that could increase your course performance by a whole letter grade?"

Starting today, students and parents will be able to purchase immediate access to LearnSmart from the recently launched LearnSmart website at http://www.mhlearnsmart.com, by simply finding the McGraw-Hill textbook title for the courses they are taking. McGraw-Hill LearnSmart will also be available for purchase at Follett's network of 940 college and university campus stores throughout North America and on Follett's website. LearnSmart can also be purchased through the McGraw-Hill Education online store at http://www.shopmcgrawhill.com.

To promote the proven effectiveness and expanded availability of this exciting study tool, McGraw-Hill is also announcing today the Going Places with LearnSmart Sweepstakes, in which students who enter will be eligible to win prizes totaling more than $10,000, including gift cards students can use towards spring break travel, and free LearnSmart products. U.S. Politics Means China Success for TransCanada and Keystone Pipeline

Posted: at 7:17 am

By Erin McBride - August 8, 2012 | Tickers: CEO, NXY, TRP | 0 Comments

Erin is a member of The Motley Fool Blog Network -- entries represent the personal opinions of our bloggers and are not formally edited.

Who wins every time the environmentalists delay the TransCanada (NYSE: TRP) Keystone XL Pipeline?

China.

Canada has so much oil they want to sell it off. The United States is very dependent on oil. And yet, somehow the U.S. just can't seem to get its act together enough to buy it from its closest neighbors (or drill its own oil).

On the other hand, China is willing to go all the way across the Pacific Ocean to get the oil that the U.S. could have had first. This makes little to no sense on any financial or national security level.

What is China going to do with all of that Canadian oil? Sell it. And Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY), the Senates number three Democrat, thinks that the Chinese should be forced to provide fair access for U.S. companies to its domestic markets.

Because that makes perfectly good sense- don't buy it yourself, and then let one of your biggest competitors on all world markets and threats to national security buy it and sell it back to you! Senator Schumer, please check your Harvard degrees, and retake simple business math.

The state-run Chinese National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) (NYSE: CEO) has offered $15.1 billion for Canadian firm Nexen (NYSE: NXY)and its highly coveted stakes in the Alberta tar sands. The deal would give China access to North American energy expertise and resources. And it gives Canada much-needed capital to better develop the tar sands.

But Nexen has American holdings, which means the Committee on Foreign Investments in the United States (CFIUS) is allowed to meddle in the deal. Senator Schumer is expected to interfere with the deal unless the U.S. gets some access to the Chinese holdings.

Clarke surprise at Olympic success

Posted: at 7:17 am

Clarke wasnt expected to make the eight-man final but secured an impressive time of 13.39 seconds as USAs Aries Merritt stormed to victory in his personal best time of 12.92 secs.

And the 22-year-old Brit insists he was happy just to have qualified for the semi-finals, as he rounded off a dream Olympic campaign just outside the medal positions.

I cant believe I came fourth in the Olympic Games, I didnt even expect to make the final, said London-born Clarke, who qualified for the final in one of the fastest losers spots with 13.31 secs.

I went into the semi-final treating it as the final, I ran a personal best there and it was a dream come true.

The last four years have been an amazing journey. If you said at the start of the year that I would come fourth in the Olympics I would definitely have taken that.

To win a medal in the Olympic Games is very, very hard and I didnt come here with that expectation.

Ive beaten the European silver medallist and I was the only European in that final. I just cant believe it.

Continuing to focus on employee development

Posted: at 7:16 am

by Priscilla Hiu. Posted on August 9, 2012, Thursday

SOME companies do not believe in training staff while others just send their employees for training without any proper planning or a purpose in mind.

Yet, training for employees is really an essential part of employee development. Any company that wants to develop its employees needs to set up a strategic training plan to ensure that the employees and company benefit from any training.

Training is crucial and should be included in any development plan for employees. Big organisations often send their potential leaders for personal development training in order to prepare them for a more important role. As for leaders, they provide coaching programmes in order to further enhance their leadership skills.

However, formal training programmes are only the starting point. What the employees have learnt from the training needs to be applied to their work. Only when the employees are able to practise what they have learnt and put the skills to good use in their jobs, can real training take place.

When employees go for training, do encourage them to share what they have learnt with their colleagues. This way their colleagues are also able to gain knowledge and it will also help them to recap all that they have learnt.

To develop employee problem-solving skills and the ability to think, assign work that will stretch and challenge them to go beyond their current limitations. When the employees are able to overcome their limitations and stretch themselves, they will discover how much further they can go and what their tolerance level is. The employees will also discover the areas that need improvement and the skills that they would like to acquire in the near future. They will have a better idea of the type of training that they need to attend for further personal development.

The best way to develop employees is to set an example be a role model. There is nothing more inspiring than having someone in the organisation who the employees can look up to and aspire to be. The model leaders pleasant attitude and constructive work habits will influence employees in many ways. Employees will strive to pick up the positive attributes of model leaders and seek personal development to become more like them.

When the company gives employees an opportunity to grow, they are helping to build them up to be more capable people. The employees will be more efficient in carrying out their work and achieve greater job satisfaction.

The company will also enjoy benefits as the employees are more productive and happier in the workplace. Employees are also more likely to stay on with the company as they can see opportunities to grow on a personal level as well as within the organisation.

UD’s First Skype Dissertation Defense – Video

Posted: at 7:15 am

08-08-2012 09:46 Samuel Mathey, a doctoral candidate in the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, is the first UD student to successfully defend his dissertation using Skype. Mathey's dissertation committee sat in a Pearson Hall video conference room on UD's Newark campus while he attended his defense virtually from France. Mathey had been working remotely with his advisor and the committee for three years. Once he completed his dissertation manuscript it was difficult to arrange a time to complete the oral defense given his location and the committee member's schedules, so they decided to conduct the defense via Skype.
