Seniors spend mornings stepping it up

The summers record high temperatures havent kept McPhersons senior citizens from staying in shape. Those driving near the intersection of Euclid and Elm streets early in the morning might spot a small crowd gathered outside Park School Warehouse. The senior aerobics class, organized and led by Sondra Frank of the McPherson Senior Center, meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The class typically meets indoors, but has been gathering outside to get away from the heat of the non-air conditioned building. They dont want to stop, Frank said. Theyre a very dedicated group of people. Exercises are done to the beat of a variety of music, including pop, country, oldies and others. The same songs are used for each three-month session. The class begins slowly and learns the steps, and eventually new songs are added. Every six months an entirely new session begins. Following warm-up stretching, the low-impact aerobics class participants use lightweight hand weights to develop strength and use dyna bands for resistance. They also step to country line dances and finish with a cool down. Frank, the executive director of the senior center, has led the class since 1984. It began as a sitting chair class and evolved into more active exercises. Currently, there are 32 signed up. We all know that people who exercise on a regular basis, their body and strength is better, their mind functions better and their heart is healthier, Frank said. Thats our real goal. Frank integrates exercises that she thinks will be fit for their abilities but will also push them to their full potential. For example, one movement uses a left foot and a right hand, which uses both sides of their brain. My goal for them is to remain active and healthy so they have a long, good quality of life and to be able to continue to do the things they want to do to enjoy their senior years, she said. This goal has been reached by several attendees. Mary Petersen of McPherson started attended the class four months ago. I sure feel better since Ive started doing it, she said, noting improved muscle strength and breathing. Weve got an awesome bunch. Its something Im going to stick with. Petersen said her family was shocked when she told them what she was doing You dont realize how fun it is, she said. Bob Duren of McPherson has been attending the class for five years and has enjoyed staying limber and also keeping in touch with his classmates, who often meet at the senior center afterward. Donna Burke of McPherson has been taking the class for six and a half years. She said he has helped ease her lower back pains. I just feel so good afterward, she said. You just feel so much better. The class is non-age restrictive. To sign up, contact the McPherson Senior Center.

Post-Mass yoga provides time for reflection
Posted: at 4:12 pm
NASHUA The ladies of St. Christopher Parish have something to energize them Wednesday mornings: Yoga for Seniors with instructor Elizabeth Cote.
For everyone it's a chance to stretch, to get together, Cote said after a session in the church basement. There's always a little chat before and after class. It brings internal focus and kind of quiets the outside world.
Cote, who works full time as a consultant, teaches yoga on a volunteer basis. She also teaches at the Merrimack YMCA at 6 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Yoga began to take off in the Western world in the 1960s. It takes many forms, from heat yoga to medicinal yoga to yoga for seniors.
All the women who attend sessions in the church basement are members of the church and attend yoga after morning Mass. Though the class is open to men, the one male participant quit because he was the only guy.
Annette Godwin came because she was having trouble sleeping and was experiencing a lot of stress.
I was 20 pounds heavier and my blood pressure was 195 over 80, Godwin said. After doing yoga, she said, her blood pressure declined and she began to sleep normally again.
She had also been having trouble with her knee and was facing surgery.
I had chronic pain, 24/7. That type of stress plus the daily stress. Losing the weight, and the blood pressure, made all the difference, she said.
Since they weren't doing strenuous exercise, Godwin thought the results were miraculous.

Yoga Guru Holds Anti-Graft Protest in India
Posted: at 4:12 pm
Indians shouted patriotic slogans and listened to a rousing speech from a charismatic yoga guru who began fasting Thursday to pressure the government to bring back billions of ill-gotten gains so-called black money citizens have stashed in foreign banks.
Supporters of Baba Ramdev jammed traffic across New Delhi as they walked to the sprawling Ramlila fairgrounds and buses from nearby states converged on the capital. About 20,000 people pledged their support for Ramdev's campaign to wipe out tax evasion and endemic corruption in India.
Squatting on the ground and fanning themselves with bits of cardboard in the sweltering monsoon heat, supporters cheered as Ramdev spoke.
"I am not against any political party. My protest is only to end black money and to bring back to this country what rightfully belongs to the people of India," he announced from a 20-foot high platform constructed at the end of a vast tent.
Though poor acoustics made it difficult to hear Ramdev, his supporters were unfazed, saying they already knew what he stood for.
"He is our hope for the future. He will save this country from the politicians," said Amulya Kumar, a farm laborer from Bihar, who was holding a small bundle of clothes and food.
Along with his teenage nephew, Kumar had traveled two days by train from Bihar's poverty-stricken Munger district for the rally.
Millions of Indians tune in every day to watch Ramdev perform yoga exercises on his popular TV show. In the past few years he has transformed his popularity as a yoga guru to highlight his campaign against corruption.

Ramdev said he would not eat for three days and outlined his demands: a robust ombudsman law to keep checks on government, a strong and independent Central Bureau of Investigation and efforts to act against tax evasion and illegal money sent to banks abroad.

Indian yoga guru Baba Ramdev has launched an indefinite anti-corruption protest in the capital, Delhi.
The yoga guru says he is campaigning for the recovery of suspected bribe money allegedly held overseas.
He is also demanding strong anti-corruption laws and more autonomy for government's investigation agencies.
Baba Ramdev has millions of supporters and his daily television programme is eagerly watched by millions of people across India.
Last June he held a nine-day anti-corruption hunger strike before the police evicted him from Delhi.
His latest protest - attended by several thousand people - is being held at the Ramlila ground in Delhi, the venue of his protest last year which was attended by thousands of supporters.
"We are not here to replace any political party. We don't have a political agenda. Our only concern is ending corruption in country," Baba Ramdev said.
In June this year, the yoga guru joined leading campaigner Anna Hazare to undertake a day-long fast in protest against corruption.
Last week Mr Hazare called off an anti-corruption hunger strike after announcing plans to enter politics.

The government said Thursday said a committee was working on a draft of the ombudsman bill, which would be placed before Parliament next month. India's finance ministry is in the process of tightening laws to curb the generation of black money and its illegal transfer abroad.
